Guest Reviews
- Ineke (10/5): Onthaasten in The Old Schoolhouse - De ligging van het huis, alles keurig schoon.
Fijne inrichting en goede bedden. Heerlijke douche.
Contact met eigenaar. N.v.t.
- Mark (10/5): Beautiful - Everything excellent from beds to showers, kitchen to picnic table - which we moved to be outside french doors. All need essentials included, just ask if you need more as owner is very approachable. Tongue is 16 miles and North Coast easy to drive to for tourism, groceries and pubs. The Crask Inn iconic.
Main bedroom has more comfortable bed. We should have stayed longer !
It was a fabulous holiday.
- chris (10/5): Quiet and remote but easy drives in every direction - The house was spotlessly clean and very comfortable.
In a beautiful, remote location about 25 minutes drive to the nearest shop so make sure you stock up whilst you’re out and about. It’s along way to go if you run out of milk !
We loved the remoteness A few more matches and fire lighters to light the fire perhaps ?
- Aiste (10/5): A runaway from the rush of daily life in stunning Higlands - We stayed at this beautifully renovated old-school house in Altnaharra. Inside, you can see photos showing how the house looked before and after the renovation, which gives you a real sense of its history and transformation.
The house had everything you could possibly need for both a short and longer stay. It was extremely comfortable, and every detail had clearly been thought through. The sleeping arrangements were cozy and relaxing, and the open-plan living area - with a kitchen, dining space, and living room - made it feel spacious and welcoming. The large smart TV was a great touch, but the real highlight for us was the fireplace. Logs were provided, along with clear instructions on how to use the burner, which made our evenings by the fire really special.
The views are simply breathtaking - visible from every window, overlooking the Munros and the lush, green landscape. We were even lucky enough to see deer at sunset, which made our stay unforgettable.
Although the house is located in a quiet, remote hamlet, it’s still conveniently positioned - within 30 minutes to an hour you can reach nearby towns, whether for sightseeing or shopping for essentials.
Our host was fantastic - very communicative and welcoming. He even came by to greet us on the day we arrived, and we had a lovely chat about the history of the house and the area. The house was renovated by the owner and his work partner, who are co-owners, and their care and dedication are evident in every corner.
Overall, Altnaharra is a beautiful, comfortable, and peaceful retreat, perfect for anyone wanting to relax and disconnect from the rush of daily life. We had an absolutely wonderful stay and highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore the stunning Highlands. Everything was perfect.

- Carla (10/5): A perfect place - Everything, the house is amazing with all you need Nothing
Rien.
- Gwen (9/5): Very comfortable stay. - Lovely remote location - very quiet. It was a terrific base for us to travel from. The house itself was very comfortable, laid out well and had all the facilities needed. The shower was fabulous which was needed at the end of the day!

- Harold (9/5): Superb -
- William (10/5): Extraordinary home in a most magical setting - Beautiful house in an amazing setting; the owner was very friendly and helpful…a cool guy it would have been nice to get to know better. That we didn’t get to stay longer 😉
- Emma (10/5): Remote and relaxing was just what we wanted - Spotlessly clean with a good assortment of kitchen cookware and mod cons The mattresses were a little soft and noisy
- Steve (10/5): Exceptionally well appointed and presented privacy and seclusion - The property is perfectly located to access all parts of the Highlands. Communication with the owners was just right before and during our stay. The Old School House is extrememly well appointed and finished to a wonderfuly high standard. The presentation is perfect, the owners made sure that all the little details were just so. There were no hidden surprises, what you see in the pictures is exactly what you get. We adored the remoteness and the seclusion that Altnaharra offers as a Hamlet. If it's well apointed privacy and seclusion you are after, The Old School House delivers in spades. We will be returning.

Impeccably decorated and furnished throughout.
Spacious and warm. Fully equipped with everything we needed.
Communication from Colin was clear and timely and he gave us a warm welcome on arrival and ensured we were comfortable.
Location is superb with views of mountains, moorland and you can just about see Lochnaver. If you get an evening with a clear sky you will get spectacular views of the milky way and constellations.
If you want peace and quiet this place is ideal. Nothing to dislike.
- Helen (10/5): Superb stay - Beautifully appointed, spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable Nothing
- Joshua (10/5): Just what we needed to celebrate our anniversary. Beautiful place and will definitely be visiting again in the future. - Beautiful property, very clean, modern & hi spec. Nothing.
- Klaudia (10/5): Cannot recommend highly enough - Beautiful property situated in the remote part of Highlands; very well-equipped with an easy access to a variety of scenic places; ideal for those who like to explore and enjoy hill walking but also a nice, peaceful place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life; Colin, the owner, was very welcoming and easily contactable in case of any problems (thankfully, we did not need to use his help as our stay was very pleasant and straightforward) Nothing - the place was absolutely stunning, recently renovated, has everything you need (be prepared to fight off the midges, depending on the time of the year you come visit)
- Koen (9/5): Superb - Fully equiped, newly renovated house
Central location to visit West and North coast (Durness, Handa island, Ben Hope) Prepare yourself against the midges (this is Scotland:) )
- Alessia (10/5): Had a fantastic time at the Old Schoolhouse. Colin was a wonderful host, and the location is spectacular to explore the - Very nicely-equipped, tasteful and comfortable. New, clean, stocked with everything you might need
- Marianne (9/5): A lovely modern well equipped house set in a quiet location. Loved the scenery and would - The modern very well equipped house was perfect for those wanting to get away to a quiet place and enjoy the spectacular local scenery and wildlife on the doorstep.
- Paul (10/5): Exceptional - Really smart design choices, perfect location for peace and beauty
- Alan (10/5): We would highly recommend to others! - If you like secluded, beautiful views, peace and quiet, lots of walks, then this is the place for you.
The house has been refurbished to a very high standard and comes with everything you could wish for your stay.
It was an old schoolhouse and knowing the history just added to its charm.
One of the owners popped along to say hello, and you can ask anything you need.
There’s a hotel within walking distance, open during the summer months. For the children, a play park is just along the road.
All in all, a lovely location and property. Well worth a visit and very reasonably priced. There wasn’t anything we didn’t like, but be mindful it is Scotland and take midge repellent at the appropriate times of the year.
