Guest Reviews
- Siyi (9/5): -
- Dominic (10/5): - Very nice accommodation! The hosts were very friendly and the place is peaceful and in style of a traditional ryokan. They serve food and there are many restaurants nearby too. It’s also relatively close to the train station and the lake. Would definitely recommend!

- Ryan (10/5): My go to stay whenever I’m in Shiga next. - The Owners were very nice and helpful.

- Andrej (10/5): -
- Edward (10/5): - The staff were really nice

- Marc (8/5): Relaxing stay to see Hikone castle and Genkyuen Gardens - The host and his family were very helpful with ideas and suggestions. Free use of bicycles to ride to the castle and swimming beach. Excellent Japanese dinner in the renovated dining area. They also helped me get to the train station when I checked out.
It is a Ryokan in a heritage area so expect tatami mats, futons, Japanese pillows and shared bathroom with very clean water in the Onsen bath.
- Joshua (10/5): Wonderful room and facilities. - Despite the language barrier, the owners were super friendly and helpful. They even gave me a ride to the station so I didn’t have to walk back with my luggage. The location was close to Hikone Castle, and there were bikes available to borrow free of charge. This was the best stay of my trip so far. No complaints.

- TSUNG LIN (8/5): -
- Ieva (10/5): I hope to come back - I absolutely loved my stay at Hikone and Kiyotaki ryokan. The room I stayed in was spacious and smelled of tatami, the bath was newly and renovated and comfortable, there was a small table in room along with a kettle and a teapot set perfect for a cup of tea in the morning. This was both one of my favorite stays in Japan so far as well as one of the cheaper ones. The owner of this ryokan is super friendly well. He gave me tips on what to see as well as a map of local cafes and restaurants and other tourist attractions which he himself helped make. Overall the stay was super friendly and I hope to come back in the future and even book the dinner this time.

- Kira (10/5): Exceptional - Incredible! The place was gorgeous and staff were so helpful. We would definitely stay here again.
- Hayley (9/5): Superb -
- Remeňová (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay was a great experience, the owners are very kind and friendly people who took good care of us and helped us with all our requests (for example finding a place to dry our wet clothes). The whole accommodation is clean and quiet. We also ate dinner and breakfast here and couldn’t recommend it enough, it was absolutely delicious with many variable dishes. There is mentioned on the ryokan’s booking profile that the owner doesn’t speak English, but his English is actually very good compared to other Japanese I spoke to in Japan and communication was not a problem. The pillows were made of small balls and were a bit uncomfortable.
- Emmanuelle (10/5): Exceptional - Really quiet, amazing host, very good food for dinner and breakfast, incredible traditional japanese bathroom.
- Gerard (9/5): Superb -
- Joe (10/5): Exceptional -
- Piotr (10/5): Excellent stay and very tasty food. - Overall perfect stay. I like smaller places so instead of more days in Kyoto we went to Hikone. It was very much worth it and very pleasant stay in Ryokan and very good breakfast and dinner served by the host made it.
- Lucia (10/5): Exceptional - Room with tatami and dinner. Defintely have the dinner, it was probably the best meal I had in Japan during my 3 week travel.
My room did not have common walls with other rooms, so it was very quiet. .
- Kelly (9/5): Loved it! - The staff were very nice and helpful. The ryokan had very authentic feeling. We also really enjoyed the baths. The dinner we had there was exceptional.
- Abraham (10/5): Exceptional - Very kind host, good breakfast.
- Lj (8/5): Not near the station, but a fantastic place to stay - The staff was lovely. The room was spacious, and the entire place was quiet and clean. The common bathroom was well stocked.
- Ainsworth (10/5): Exceptional - Great place for a change of pace in japan!!! Free bike rental super kind owners and great food
- Chih (10/5): Exceptional - Master is very welcoming!
He’s willing to have conversation if you can speak some Japanese.
You can ask for breakfast and dinner preparation.
- Dallas (10/5): Exceptional -
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Both owners are friendly and thoughtful. I highly recommend including dinner, which is delicate and, of course, delicious.
- Rebecca (10/5): Wonderful location and welcoming, traditional stay - This was the best location imaginable. We loved exploring Zenkoji Temple and surrounds early in the morning and in the evening. The many food and shopping opportunities along Nakamise-dori are literally at the doorstep. Our favourite was the apple and custard pie from Benibeni. The traditional mattresses were particularly thin but I'd still stay again!
- Alec (9/5): Great breakfast and amenities. - Breakfast and the baths.
- Lawrence (10/5): 10/10 - The accommodations is flawless, it is quiet, simple, tidy and comfortable. And the host is so warmhearted and one of the nicest persons, I‘ve met in Japan so far. Unfortunately I just stayed there for one night
- Yusuke (10/5): A +++ - clean and friendly nothing bad
- Carina (8/5): Very good - Great cozy futons, beautiful location, owner speaks quite some English. Facilities are partially a bit outdated. Vegetarian meals were offered but prepared without love, very simple dishes or dishes containing fish/meat were simply skipped in the vegetarian meal option (eg no miso soup) - but price is the same ;)
- Stefanie (10/5): Perfect stay in Hikone - Best stay we could have. Such a friendly owner, also very kids-friendly. The bath is completely new. Everything was extremely clean. In the end he brought us to the station by car, although it was a busy day for him. Maybe it would be great to have some other breakfast options. But just for recommend. There are other cafes to choose from if you want.
- Saskia (8/5): Very comfortable - Staff very friendly. Can rent bikes for free. A little far from the station but the staff offered to drive us there after we checked out
- Lucifer (9/5): Beautiful town, amazing ryokan. - The relaxed atmosphere is so very nice. A true ryokan experience. Although I am a bit too rickety for constantly sitting on the beautiful tatami floor, I enjoyed my time thoroughly. The owner is fun, his wife is adorable and everything is so very clean... impressive! It's a good 15 minute walk from the trainstation, but once you've figured out how to get there it's not a problem. Hikone is great, calm, beautiful. The food is very Japanese and delicious. Sawayama ruins and Hikone castle are stunning to see. The harbour is tiny, but you can take sightseeing cruises there onto lake Biwa. At check in I had to wait for quite a while because there is no front desk. There was no one to be found.
- Leander (10/5): Hikone is beautiful and so is this Ryokan - Arrived way too early for the check-in in the rain and got my room prepared in 10-15 minutes. The host and his wife and all the staff were super nice and helpful.
- Tereza (8/5): Nice stay - I liked the room and the hotel ryokan. It has nice atmosphere, is clean and friendly. I just had problem with wifi connection, which was quite unstable.
- Coline (10/5): Wonderful stay - The Kiyotaki Ryokan is a beautiful traditional house, the atmosphere is quiet and perfect to relax. The owners are very kind and helpful. The breakfast is delicious! Nothing, everything was perfect.
- Catherine (9/5): Superb - We received a very warm welcome. The facilities were great. We would definitely stay here again.
- Irwan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nb (9/5): not the cheapest option in Kinosaki, but well worth the investment - can recommend. - the kaiseki breakfast was absolutely incredible.
our room (river view) was stunning and the amenities were great, the staff was absolutely lovely (especially when helping with the yakutas) and the location was absolutely superb - right in the centre of Kinosaki.
THE best night's sleep I've had in years (well over a decade), we roasted ourselves in the amazing hot springs until the very last opening minutes (11pm) and couldn't wait to do it again first thing in the morning. I understand the building is old and traditional, so not expecting modern-day insulation.
However, hearing the next-door neighbours talking & drinking until past 1am (and hearing them tinkle every time they went to the bathroom) was a huge minus for me.
Otherwise Kiyotaki Ryokan is amazing
- Avni (10/5): Excellent stay, highly recommend! - Excellent stay at Kiyotaki Ryokan during our cycle around Lake Biwa. The owner and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The rooms were spacious and clean. The bath facilities were also superb. Highly recommend both the dinner and the breakfast - the food was fantastic! We would definitely stay here again :) Nothing, this was a 10/10 stay!
- Davy (9/5): Superb - The host went out of his way to help me navigate my way around Hikone including driving me to the port for a boat tour and collecting me in town to return to his premises
- Jenn (3/5): Poor - The place was not in convenient location and definitely run down. Bathroom older and cold quite a walk from bedroom. Lots of stairs steps. Left after one night and found alternat accomodation
- Kai (10/5): Real Ryokan experience with comfortable rooms and very nice Owners. - The Ryokan is located pretty close to everything, Hikone Castle and Hikone station can be reached by foot in about 10-20 minutes, restaurant, convenience stores, etc. are also pretty close. The family running the Ryokan was very very friendly and accommodating to me. Everything has been explained to me, but I also speak Japanese so mileage may vary. The bath was very nice and Japanese style. Everything I needed like Toothbrushes, shampoo was available. I liked the room, it was a Japanese style tatami room with a comfortable Futon bed. There are some bars located close by and they might sing loudly in the evening. I just closed my window and wasn’t bothered much by it though.
It’s probably best to join them if you aren’t tired like I was.
- Polina (10/5): BEST HOST. - This was probably the best accommodation I had so far. It is true when they say - the further you go from the big cities, the more sympathetic and kind people you meet. I was very skeptical about my stay in the ryokan, as the pictures were not that promising and the price was quite low. As well as the city of Hikone is not that big (probably it is a small town area). But when I came in the evening after a full-day trip, I saw a very well made accommodation, exceptionally clean and a host, who met me with a very warm greeting! He showed me all of the facilities and we had a nice chat. I should admit - it is very important when you are coming late and plus to that you are alone.
Later he offered me a dinner and I was more then amazed by how tasty and big it was for that price! I had 5 or more dishes (do not remember exactly as there were a lot), prepared on a beautiful tableware. I really felt like I was home. The lobby area was probably repaired - as it has nothing similar with the photos from the booking.com. Now it has a very clean and light colored design. It was visible from the first sight, that the host treats the hotel as if it was his own house, greeting everyone with open arms and heart. I would dream to meet such hosts in Kyoto, Osaka and other big cities. But so far, I met the best host in Hikone town.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the host-just found his name now.
Hiroshi san,
- Matthieu (10/5): Exceptional - This was an amazing stay! The staff was super friendly and we managed to communicate in English (with a little help from google)
Breakfast and dinner were very good and not too expensive (1100¥ breakfast, 2200¥ dinner)
The bathroom is shared with a sento feel to it which makes it great.
Bedding is very comfortable and the kimono they offer look dope!
Would 100% come back
- Lucy (7/5): Good -
- Charlie (10/5): Exceptional - Host was super kind and willing to work things out with me when I wasn’t aware that this is the cash only residence. He even took me to the station too. The maps that he gave were super helpful! Bed was a bit hard for me but that’s different for everyone.
- Oliver (9/5): Superb -
- Eduard (10/5): Loved it, felt at home - Alles
- Tomas (9/5): A great stay! - The owners were really friendly and the location was pretty near the city center. You could also rent a bike if you need one. No problems with the internet connection and the room was really clean and even had some complimentary green tea. There was a weird smell on the second floor in the hall, but apart from that everything was really good.
- Carolyn (6/5): Pleasant -
- Rhyannan (9/5): Warm and welcoming, prepared vegetarian food in request. - Really great place to stay! The owner is so warm and welcoming. He went out his way to prepare vegetarian food for me, it was a simple meal with good ingredients prepared with care. Really delicious. Not many places in Japan agree to do this so I really appreciated the gesture.
