Guest Reviews
- Jilanne (10/5): Friendly and great location - The owner was wonderful and accommodating. And the food was magnificent. Nothing
- JarekzWarszawy (10/5): Klimat Japonii w Miyajimie - Super śniadanie i onsen. Przemiła obsługa.
- Fanney (9/5): Absolutely lovely - The staff. They are more than lovely! Really helpful with pointers for what to do. Great dinner and beautiful breakfast. Everything is well organised yet very warm. Lovely. The walls are a little thin so you hear absolutely everything. It was all quiet when I was there but just maybe don’t go there if you’re a loud night owl :)
- Wendy (10/5): Authentic Japanese stay with an incredible dinner and breakfast! Best stay in Japan. - We were so happy that we booked this stay. It felt like the most authentic stay we had, the location was great, the staff were friendly, the room was beautiful. We were not expecting the amazing dinner and breakfast. It was truly the highlight of our vacation. We will for sure make plans to stay here again on our next visit. Everything was great!
- Kasper (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jack_the_beast (10/5): Excellent beyond words - Strongly recommended if you want a true Japanese experience. Rooms where dated but great and with an authentic feeling. The private onsen was a blast. Food was excellent super seeded ony by the kindness and dedication of the staff. I've a lot of severe allergies and they were able to accommodate then perfectly without making me feel left out during dinner (very hard). Loved every single second we were there. Our room would benefit from an addition curtain
- Claudia (10/5): Best price-value in lovely Miyajima. The host is very friendly. The ryokan central, and spot clean. - The Japanese breakfast was to die for. The room is spotless and location faboulous All was wonderful
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ruben (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katharina (10/5): Wonderful ryokan with great hospitality and outstanding meals. - Everything: the traditional tatami room with a view to a little indoor garden, most delicious dinner and breakfast, scheduled time for onsen bath, very kind host.
- Şengöz (10/5): It was an experience of a life time. - This was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had. If you are planning to go to Miyajima instead of doing a day trip stay a night in here and be sure to experience Kaiseki. It was exceptional.
- Franz (10/5): This charming inn gives you Miyajima without day-trippers and with the care of lovely hosts. - We stayed at several ryokan during our latest Japan trip. The breakfast here was the best. Beautiful attention to detail and to subtle, local flavors. You can reserve the ryokan's bath for privacy. Additionally, the location is about 2/3 of the way from the ferry to the shrine (and to Daisho-in, a quiet, engaging, and important Shingon Buddhist temple you really should consider walking up to). There is simply nothing to dislike about this ryokan.
- Carroll (10/5): Lovely stay in historic house, lovely host. - Lovely stay in historic inn. Host was friendly and helpful. Good traditional dinner and breakfast. Can request a "family" or "couples" Onsen so that you and your partner can bath together.
- Jovan (10/5): feels like our home away from home! - a lovely and charming ryokan stay with warm hospitality. greatly appreciate the recommendations on restaurants and attractions, and the breakfast was delightful!
- Jeffrey (9/5): Superb -
- Raffaele (10/5): Exceptional - This place is a leap in the past. Welcoming owner and ready with stories and advice about our stay, absolutely adorable, and even iffered sone little keepsake for the occasion. is not cheap, honestly, but worth every penny spent.
The rooms were with a tatami floor and futon beds and it was as cosy and comfortable as it could be.
- Márton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Guido (10/5): Beautiful place and amazing staff. -
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (10/5): Absolutely fabulous. - Location, friendly and helpful hosts, amazing food. All in no particular order.
Have always wanted to stay overnight on the island. Saw this deal, so happy. Despite the rain, everything was perfect. Was even lent an umbrella to borrow. Would love to return. Thoroughly and I mean it thoroughly recommend this place. Tricky question. Nothing comes to mind
- Lucie (10/5): Best night of my trip - I’ve had the best night sleep of my whole trip at Ryoso Kawaguchi. The room was so cosy, the futon so comfortable and the private bath room was a gem and a great experience, so relaxing after a day of sightseeing of the beautiful island of Miyajima. The owners are two extremely nice people, helped me whenever I had any questions, and made sure I had everything I needed.
The establishment is also really conveniently placed and offers a beautiful view on the pagoda. (And you’ll be pleasantly surprised of the view of the second floor common room, especially at night!)
- Emma (10/5): Fabulous. So hospitable 🥰 - Very cool traditional accommodation and the staff were sooo lovely. Wonderful private onsen and very comfortable to sleep. Loved it and will stay again. Wish we were there longer.
- Meritxell (9/5): Superb -
- Anders (9/5): Superb -
- Wendy (10/5): Excellent Japanese hospitality and amazing dining experience in a 300 year old ryokan, well maintained and very close to - Comfortable bedding, private bath,
Close proximity to ferry terminal, shops and restaurants
We were able to store our luggages few hours prior to checking in.
Warm hospitality & amazing dining experience Nothing
- O'keefe (10/5): Friendly, warm and relaxing. The perfect place to stay when exploring Miyajima. - The hostess was incredibly friendly and helpful and spoke far better English than I speak Japanese. The room was the most spacious we had in our entire trip to Japan and a very relaxing place to sleep and relax for a little while. The onsen bath was great and as I didn't realize it was part of the stay when booking a nice surprise too. Ryoso Kawaguchi is located pretty perfectly to be within a short walk of anywhere we went on Miyajima.
Oh and the building itself was beautiful. Nada
- Hannah (10/5): Great location, great food stay here if you can! - It’s really close to all the mail attractions. The food is excellent, and it’s cool to stay in a house with so much history. It’s 300 years old! The room we stayed in was also very large, which was nice for a change, and we really liked the private onsen. She keeps the water running in the onsen, so it’s always fresh. Nothing, it was lovely
- Constanza (9/5): Superb -
- Devin (10/5): We were very happy with our stay, and the hospitality provided. It was a calm central point for us. - Wonderful food, and amazing accommodation of my Gluten free requirements. The property is very close to Itsukushima Jinja, and all the shops on the island. You get a private bath with your partner. The bath isn't quite that extravagant onsen vibe, and you pick a one hour block ahead of time. But I think if you check in with them could probably get another wash in.
- Shelly (8/5): Location was so convenient, food was great beds were comfortable and the hosts were very friendly - Dinner and breakfast were delicious and just the right amount!
- Nir (10/5): Exceptional - Great location
Amazing food
Super nice manager
Best hotel I have been at on my vacation
- Lim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jacob (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ray (9/5): Superb - Superb family run ryokan. Great private hot bath and lovely traditional Japanese meals. A really nice place to have the full Japanese ryokan experience. Also really close to the floating Tori gate and to get to the cable car for the mountain. Had to pay in cash which was fine for us as we made sure we had the cash with us. However, all the atms in the local village were closed while we were there, so if we hadn’t brought cash with us from the mainland we would have been a bit stuck!
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional - It seems like the Ryokan is run by a Japanese couple. The lady can speak perfect English and she was absolutely lovely. She recommended many places to visit, pointed out where to eat, and warned about opening and closing times of restaurants. She also explained how the in-house onsen works, and I was glad I had a place to relax after a long rainy day
- Jennie (10/5): Sensational location and food - Excellent location, gorgeous owner, exquisite cooking, dinner was an absolute delight. Lovely shower and bathroom facilities. We loved our stay. It was perfect
- Jeremy (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was perfect. The hotel staff was super nice. I will happily return to this hotel during my next trip in Japan.
- Valentina (10/5): Amazing food & stay - The food is outstanding and the whole stay was great. The hotel is quiet and comfortable, with a nice rooftop to relax and private Japanese bath. 2 mins from the main shopping street and close to all the attractions of the island.
The staff is friendly, welcoming and genuinely nice. Nothing, it’s great
- Chiara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aída (9/5): Perfect stay in Miyajima - I would say this one was the best accommodation of the whole trip. You could feel the traditional Japan without having the feeling that you are in a tourist trap. We really enjoyed exploring Miyajima at night and early in the morning before all the boats started to arrive and this hotel gave us the perfect opportunity to do so.
We requested traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner and they were both amazing. We also used the onsen and it was great. And the view of the pagoda from the top floor was really beautiful.
On the day we were leaving, we left the luggage for a while at the reception. When we came back, I had fallen down and had a wound in my knee and one of the ladies from the hotel went to find some alcohol and bandages to clean the wound, I really appreciated it! Nothing!
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Everything but the service is incredible!!! Food was insane! Handmade and delicious!!! But in another level
- Allan (10/5): A special place to unwind. - We were able to experience living in a 300 year old home with the owner. An amazing property run by a lady who truly cares. The location is perfect. Recommend having her cook a special dinner. Having to leave. Most places close very early.
- M (10/5): Excellent experience - Amazing location, authentic food and atmosphere and the sweetest host
- Brian (10/5): Exceptional - Everything!!! Lovely welcome from the host when we arrived. She gave us great advice and lots of information.
The location is wonderful. This is a true Japanese style accommodation. Breakfast and dinner are absolutely fantastic. Nothing
- Max (10/5): Good decision to stay on the island - Incredible good location in traditional Japanese style. So relaxed and an excellent service of the host.
- Anne (9/5): We loved our stay in Miyagima at Ryoso Kawaguchi. Peaceful, comfortable and very friendly staff! - Great hotel, very comfortable and well located. The staff were really nice and the breakfast very good!
- Ty (10/5): Amazing accommodation in an awesome place. - Everything, communication before we arrived in Japan was very good. Lovely welcome from the host when we arrived, gave us loads of information redd GD adding the area. If you arrive on a Monday there is no dinner available. Loads of restaurants to go to, just be mindful everything closes around 6 Nothing
- Hisako (9/5): Superb - The owner of the hotel were very helpful with our any questions. The location of the accommodation was wonderful and we surprised with the 300 years history of this Ryokan but the property is well look after and very comfortable to stay. It is a true Japanese style accommodation. My daughter and I would like to stay again next time when we visit Hiroshima..... Thank you to Okami-san for your great hospitality !!
- Jean (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely amazing stay, I have travelled extensively throughout Japan (2+ years) and this is one of the most amazing place I have stayed at. Thank you.
- Sylwia (10/5): The experience was truly remarkable. - We thoroughly enjoyed everything! The experience was truly remarkable. The host of the Ryokan was incredibly accommodating, polite, and friendly. Not to mention, her culinary skills are exceptional; both dinner and breakfast were of Michelin Star quality. Nothing
- Mert (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely amazing meals, both breakfast and dinner. Onsen was life saver after a hike to Mt misen. Futon beds were also comfortable enough for a good night sleep. Nothing
- Stephanie (10/5): Excellent experience with outstanding Japanese food - Very warm welcome and hospitality by the owner! Full Japanese experience with fantastic Japanese food and bath.
- Mireia (10/5): Traditional Hotel in Miyajima - It has been one of the best hotels of my stay in Japan. The experience of staying overnight on the island is highly recommended because most visitors are only there for the day.
The woman who runs the hotel it is very friendly and explains what to visit in Miyajima and in the afternoon she also warns you that the restaurants usually close early. She also reserves the time for you to take the private indor onsen. Taking a hot bath after climbing Mount Misen was very relaxing.
The japanese style room was large with enough space to open your luggage and with a table to take a tee. The futon was very comfortable.
The location is fantastic in the center of Miyajima just 5 minutes walking to the Itsukushima torii and 10 minutes walking from the ferry terminal
- Shirley (10/5): Quiet, peaceful stay - Clean, Japanese style room. Nice bath area which you can book. Also would recommend getting the breakfast option!
- Isabelle (9/5): Fantastic stay on Miyajima - Amazing host. We had everything we could have wished for and the private onsen was a big plus. The Japanese breakfast was fantastic and one of the best meals we had on our trip! Nothing! All was perfect :)
- Darren (10/5): Great hosts in great location.. - Friendly Hosts who put up with our terrible Japanese 😀. Traditional Japanese rooms that were cosy and comfortable with the basics expected. Location was awesome also..have a great experience.. I had to leave 😞
- Mahina (10/5): Sublime!!! Don’t hesitate to book. Can’t believe it was so cheap - Amazing dinner and breakfast. Authentic Japanese cuisine. Lovely woman running the house Nothing
- Joelnoro (10/5): Experienced true Japanese hospitality in an authentic Japanese ryokan. - The property is gorgeous and so centrally located that it took us less than 5 minutes to walk from the ferry to it, even in the pouring rain. Likewise, the main attractions of Kawaguchi (apart from the hiking trails) are mere minutes away. But the real star is Yoko-san, the proprietor. She is such an angel! Her warmth and hospitality raises the bar even in a country that's generally considered the gold standard in customer service.
I'd pick Ryoso Kawaguchi over a 4-star hotel any day of the week. You get the authentic ryokan experience on Miyajima island and I can't recommend it enough.
- O'connor (10/5): Don't miss the cash only payment at property. - Our host was lovely. Gave us heaps of information about the area and attractions. Made us feel very at home This is a cash to owner payment and totally our fault we completely missed reading that and assumed it had been paid with booking.com like all other other holiday bookings. We only realised after we were contacted after leaving. Felt really bad about it. Made payment from tokyo. I will read more carefully in future. Host was very understanding.
- Tony (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrew (10/5): Superb Ryokan! My favorite accommodation during 3 weeks in Japan. - Fantastic hospitality. Yoko, the owner, gave me a map of Miyajima and pointed out her recommendations for sights and restaurants. The property location was great. One street up from the main shopping street. Additionally, the private onsen is a very relaxing way to end the day. Nothing!
- Ciaran (9/5): Superb -
- Haruna (10/5): Excellent historical inn. - It's very close to Itukusima Shrine. The Inn was nice, warm and clean. The Inn is a 300 year old historical building. The room is excellent 👌 They give you a clean Yukata. You can book a private hot tub. They have a common room on the third floor with a beautiful view, this is a must see. It may be hard to find restaurants after 7pm.
About the Inn, the door frames are a little low for taller patrons but it's only the door frames.
A convenience store is a 5 min walk away that closes later if you need a snack.
- Christian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Annemieke (10/5): Staying overnight is a great way to experience the island without the crowds - Great stay in a historic building with a wonderful view from the top floor. The ryokan is very close to all the sights and is run by a lovely couple. The futons are comfortable and the private Onsen was nice. Breakfast was great, made from fresh local ingredients. Unfortunately no dinner is served on Mondays (we knew this beforehand) and because it was winter no restaurants (that we could find) were open for dinner. The local convenience store was our savior ;-) and after using the microwave at the ryokan to heat things up, we had a lovely meal in our room. If breakfast is anything to go by, we sure will have to come back sometime to try out dinner at the ryokan :-). Staying overnight is a great way to experience the island without the crowds and makes you appreciate the special place it is even more. -
- Luong (10/5): Lovely ryokan. - Quiet location. Nice staff. Roomy and peaceful ryokan. Good library with view and massage chair. None.
- Sjeidg (9/5): Nice traditional inn close to attractions - Very friendly and helpful proprietor. A traditional Japanese inn on a quiet street close to the main attractions. A little noisy between rooms.
- Héctor (10/5): Amazing experience. - The traditional japanese breakfast was incredible.
The ower was very kind at all times.
We were greatly pleased with everything, even the clothes left of the room for us. The personal spa was the cherry on top.
- Isabel (9/5): Superb - Really close to the main pagoda, shrine and the main street.
The owner was really nice and she was always making sure we were having a good time.
The private hour with the hot ofuro for the family was exceptional.
- Mona (10/5): Wonderful ! Everything was well arranged and Byond our expectations - Service None
- Iñigo (9/5): Superb - Authentic ryokan experience in Mijayima. Well located close to the ferry station. The staff helped us a lot explaining us what to visit in the island. When we arrived we reserved the onsen for an hour and it was a relaxing and recomendable experience. We missed a kitchen but it wasn't a problem at all
- Stephen (7/5): Good -
- Diana (10/5): Lovely stay at traditional ryokan with kind and thoughtful hosts. - Attentive kind staff who helped us navigate the island activities we wanted to engage in. Breakfast was the best we had in our trip at a ryokan ! Location of ryokan was excellent and central to exploring the island easily.
- Philippe (10/5): A truly fantastic place to stay - The single room was really nice, big and cosy with a garden view. Location was perfect, an easy walk from the ferry and in the middle of everything. Very nice breakfast, Japanese and continental. Fantastic dinner. The owner really made me feel at home, thanks again.
- Claire (10/5): Exceptional -
- Reda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anne (9/5): Miyajima - The food was sooo delicious, both dinner and breakfast, prepared by the owner of the ryokan. The onsen was especially appreciated after a somewhat strenuous hike up the mountain. But the view on top made it worthwhile. Nothing regarding the accommodation, too many tourists in Miyajima, the streets were clogged, which made travel difficult.
- Rizga (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was very sweet and explained everything patiently. The food was great. The room was big and comfortable. It also had a private bathroom, so you could enjoy it on your own comfortably. It also had a great location, just a few minutes away from the Itsukushima Shrine. Everything was truly good.
- Pascal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pascal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ivette (10/5): Best hotel of our trip - Best hotel in my 20 days trips from Japan. Very authentic japanese style, good location but best was the staff
- Keren (10/5): Exceptional - It was super pretty and even for the places age (300 years old! Wow!) it stands well. I loved relaxing in the bath after a long day.
- Liron (10/5): Exceptional -
- Giovanni (10/5): Amazing ryokan - Very nice and typical ryokan in the middle of the village. The host has been very kind and polite. Really recommended! Nothing
- Bonet (10/5): Exceptional - The treatment the equipment, the amability... Everything was a 10 from the beginning to the end. She even woke up early to say goodbye to us while leaving on the first ferry. MUST
- Olga (8/5): Lovely location and charming crew! - Super charming and helpful Team, great location. Rooms could be refreshed
- Sandrine (10/5): Ungorgettable - The host was very welcoming, gentle and helpful. The breakfast served was absolutely amazing and delicious. The place is old and charming. Our family particularly like the time in the private onsen. Honestly? Nothing.
- Peter (9/5): Excellent experience - Very nice host, great atmosphere, good breakfast. Felt authentic
- Jacques (8/5): Very good -
- Andrew (10/5): Amazing experience that met all of our expectations and was the highlight of our trip. - Everything! The food was incredible, the host very accommodating, going out of her way to teach us the basics of staying a ryokan and giving us choices of time to use the private onsen and dining room. The dinner was beautiful and really warmed the soul after a rainy day. The breakfast was a choice between western or Japanese styles. We had the Japanese style which was delicious and kept us full most of the day! The location was great, mere steps from the shopping street and the famous Shinto shrine. The other four hotels we stayed in were standard hotel rooms and this ryokan was more comfortable than all of them. Everything was amazing, it’s hard to find something not to like. I’m not sure if a shuttle was available. Honestly one is not needed because the walk is quick (and beautiful) from the ferry terminal, however on a rainy day like the one we arrived to, it would have been a nice option.
- Maria (10/5): Lovely traditional japanese accommodation - The host made ourselves feel like at home. The room was very cosy. When we arrived she gave us all the tips for visiting the island, including tide schedule. We had private access to the onsen for 1hr for the whole family. The day we left, it was raining heavily and the host gave us a lift to the ferry station in their private car. Lovely stay thanks to great japanese hosts Brand new set of towels would have been appreciated
- Petr (9/5): Affordable ryokan with very friendly owner - Very friendly and welcoming landlady. Traditional bathroom and Japanese breakfast available. On a quite street close to the main shopping area in Miyajima.
- Hang (10/5): Wonderful - Wonderful hosts, delicious meals, very good location, large comfortable room. Couldn't have asked more from a ryokan Everything exceeded my expectation. Cannot think of any downsides to our stay
- Tristian (10/5): It was comfortable, clean, and would highly recommend. - The property was maintained really well and had a nice vibe to it. The owner was very accommodating and overall everything as advertised was provided. As mentioned before there’s nothing that my group and I disliked.
- Yiting (10/5): very good, would like to come again - service, food, the style of the hotel, and the whole vibe no
- Yiting (10/5): one of my best hotel experiences - service, and food no
- Janet (9/5): WOW. So wonderful. - Wow. This property will live in our minds. What an enchanting stay. Not only is the host absolutely wonderful but the location of the house is perfectly close to so many shops and places to walk. The private bathing was sensational....even my teenagers loved that! And the breakfast. Oh my gosh!!!! The food was amazing! The price of our stay was worth breakfast alone!!! It was such a remarkable experience!! A fresh paint on the walls and some new futons would be nice but really, it was such a great experience that it's not a big deal.
