Guest Reviews
- Dean (10/5): - The property was absolutely amazing and the location was an 11/10.
- Van Tonder (9/5): Lovely stay - Remote and beautiful. The restaurant next door is a bonus as there are no shops really around. There were also electric blankets whoch was a huge bonus as it het super super cold at night. We ised the fireplace one night and it was really cozy. I would definitely go back! We were never met by n staff member as noted on the information pages sent
- Paul (10/5): Beautiful lodge, great location and setting, and next door to the fantastic Blackhorse Brewery - Beautiful location and setting, and next door to the fantastic Blackhorse Brewery hotel for great restaurant options. The Porcupine lodge was very well furnished in a peaceful setting, highly recommended.
- Takalani (10/5): Overall great stay - The roaming space and the river Dante, Terry’s dog got rowdy with my friend and I. He barked aggressively at my friend and I when we were walking back to the house after dinner on Friday at the adjacent restaurant. Terry called Dante’s name to no success and he only barked louder. Terry apologised for Dante’s behaviour over text after my friend expressed her fear of dogs and promised to keep the dogs away while we were at the property.
On Sunday…
I went to read by the river. As I was walking back to the house, I saw Dante from a distance. I kept walking towards the house (I was excited to pat him because I had done so on Saturday when I met him after the incident). He started barking at me aggressively while standing still at a distance. I was simply walking and did not threaten him at all. I ignored the barking because dogs bark, it is what they do, I told myself (and I had met him the day before and all went well. I had no reason to be scared of him).
His owner, Terry, called his name to no success. Not only was he now barking aggressively, but he was moving towards me in the same manner. It was at that moment that I got scared and imagined the possibility of him hurting me. Luckily, it did not lead to that. However, it is unfortunate that I had to experience that, especially after the reassurance that what occurred Friday night would not happen again and that Dante was a harmless dog.
Terry did not offer an apology after this incident.
The property itself and the house is truly beautiful and amazing. However, I would not advise that you visit if you have a fear of dogs. If you don’t, go on ahead and book a stay.
- Almaré (10/5): If you are looking for peace and quiet, to reconnect with your soul, this is the place to stay! - I've been here before, so I knew that the peace and quiet that I wanted, would be there. Sitting underneath the pecan nut trees, on a swinging bench, just letting nature take over my soul! Everything was perfect!

- Deana (10/5): Beautiful stay, very comfortable with great amenities. Perfect for a short break from the hustle of Joburg - Very tranquil and beautifully secluded
- Almaré (10/5): A Melody of Peace - Words can not describe the peacefulness of this place! When you are inside Porcupine House, the pecan nut trees can be seen all around you, because of the special design of this house. The tall windows let light and nature inside, everywhere! At night, you can see the trees through the upper windows of the bedroom - so totally unique!
Walking the labyrinth is like getting a surprise round every bend in the path. The smell of the lavender when you touch it, the trees above you, the sound of so many bird species - precious in every sense of the word!
The pecan nut trees are so huge, you feel so small when walking in the orchard, or sitting on the swing bench, or reading on the daybed. At any time of the day or night you hear the wonderful harmonies of nature - in the wind, the sound of the birds, the monkeys, a thunderstorm - you can't leave without being touched in your innermost self!
Everybody who crossed my path at Melody Hill Retreat, was special! Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with me! There was nothing that I didn't like!
- Tracy (10/5): Hidden Gem - The absolutely delicious box of pecan nuts on arrival and the idyllic surroundings. Simply beautiful. I also appreciated the facilities for recycling. We didn't find any braai tongs (and a nutcracker would have also been great :-))

- Suzaan (9/5): Peaceful and relaxing stay. The perfect place to find some rest. - It was great! Very peaceful and relaxing. It felt like looking after the house of a beloved friend or family member. I enjoyed watching the squirrels. The fridge felt really loud and annoying at times (maybe because the surroundings are so quiet). I just put on some music.
- Abraham (10/5): Can't wait to go back. Perfect winter spot. - Owner very friendly and welcoming lady. The fireplace was a win̈ner.
- Lavinia (8/5): - It was peaceful and tranquil. Nil
- Nona (9/5): Superb - It was a wonderful set up next to a beautiful horse farm. There was a group of partying people in front of our unit so it was not so quiet and relaxing getaway as we expected.
- Dee (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful quiet place.. I enjoyed my stay there & will definitely go back soon That there was no Iron & Hair dryer but I survived
- Cindy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nokukhanya (9/5): Tranquil Healing Escape 🌷🪴 - Very beautiful property in nature; great for introspection and relaxation. I took walks to the river, sat under beautiful trees and took a few spins on the tree tyre swing. I got the chance to take a dip in the pool on their other property which I appreciated. I had a very spiritual experience here and I felt safe and comfortable during my stay. Connecting with nature is healing and this experience helped me heal. I enjoyed the panoramic views of the trees and the sky in the morning and evening. I enjoyed the sight of the squirrels racing through the branches of the trees although the sounds on the roof were alarming at first . I enjoyed the outside couch/seating area , it was very comfortable. The inside couch is quite warn out. The cleanliness of some of the provided dishes could’ve been better.
- Owdii (7/5): Good - Privacy

- Johnathan (10/5): Perfect for a break away from the busy life of joburg. - Quiet and peacful location, with great care and attention taken to ensure a relaxing environment.
- Kobus (10/5): Very relaxing, romantic, and refreshing. - It was magical in winter, and we want to experience it in summer too. The chimney is such a winner. Looking for pecan nuts is a very enjoyable activity, as is sitting by the river and trying to crack them.
- Joachim (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (9/5): Great stay /recommended for a romantic getaway -
- Lesego (7/5): The stay was beautiful and memorable! It really is a beautiful establishment worth visiting! - The area is fantastic! The host was exceptional, extremely warm and friendly! We felt safe and taken care of. I Love her🥰🤍 It was not clean. Basic things like pots, the toilet and carpets. I was not impressed in that regard.
- Musa (10/5): Exceptional - Everything about the place was perfect... None..
- Micaela (9/5): Superb - It was a lovely stay, this is really countryside experience with tranquility , peace and quite.
The property is also walking distance from Black Horse Brewery, which makes it comfortable if you enjoy to dine out.
On our arrival we received a bowl of pecan nuts- which was thoughtful. The decor has a moroccan atmosphere. .
- Mikhail (9/5): . - . .
- Loots (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna-marie (9/5): Honeymoon bliss - Peaceful location, surrounded by trees, cosy fireplace, lovely outdoor spot to read and relax, arty decor and furniture, rustic but comfortable, oh and the bath with a view and romantic mosquito betted bed.
Also loved the work station...
Staff very friendly and helpful and host accommodating. The monkeys and baboons came a bit close to the house for our liking.
- Patrick (9/5): Fresh air and peaceful - All the utensils, soaps and toilet papers were available. Comfortable and adequate furniture. Warm fire place. The ants and lack of an oven. We would prefer an oven rather than an air frier, for health reasons.
- Corrie (8/5): Very good -
- Cindi (9/5): I loved my stay, it was quiet. Peaceful and aesthetically pleasing. The staff is helpful and it felt like home. - Well kept and very tranquil. No air-con considering there are monkeys around.
- Van (8/5): Very good -
