Guest Reviews
- Or (7/5): Good -
- Fanny (3/5): Walking on eggshells - Everything is EXTREMELY clean. The beds were comfortable, it was very quiet at night, ideal for a good night’s rest. The twin room has a good size. Good place to stay for a short stay, or if you’re using very minimally the kitchen and are just sleeping there. Me and my partner booked 8 nights at Mary’s place. Unfortunately our stay was very unpleasant. Mary was both extremely critical of our every action, and fairly rude to us at times.
Regarding micromanaging, Mary constantly felt the need to correct us and show us how to do almost everything inside the house: how to close the doors or the toilet seat “more gently”, how to open the microwave “more gently”, how to put the kettle back on its base “more gently”, and more. It was rather insulting having someone criticize our every action, and expect us to repeat after her.
What was even more frustrating was that she would remind us that we would have to pay if we broke anything. It’s one thing to say it when we arrive, which is completely fine, but it’s exhausting to hear it constantly.
On another note, Mary pointed out that Argentinians are rude and impolite, not only indicating that she was Uruguayan, but also telling me that she could “tell” my partner was Argentinian, and not from his accent. This occurred on the second night, even though we had barely had any interactions.
She also told him directly to his face that he was improperly educated and impolite. She based this mostly on the fact that he had asked her if we could turn the TV off while we were having dinner (for context: she was not paying attention to the news and she had the TV on, on the same channel, everyday 24/7 -we figured 10min would be okay). She categorically refused insisting that this was her house.
She also talked poorly of us to other guests when we were in our room or the bathroom.
I note that Mary did apologize to us at the end of the stay, before we left. Unfortunately for us it was too little too late. Throughout the week we felt mostly unwelcome and in her way, and it would feel dishonest to leave a good review only thanks to her apology.
- Stefan (8/5): Very good - Nice and very clean room with comfortable bed. The room has heating. There is no noise at night. The owner Mary allows you to use the kitchen for cooking, which is a lifesaver with the expensive restaurants in Ushuaia if you're travelling on a budget. Mary gave us a lot of excellent tips about Ushuaia (she's been living there for 40 years) and provided us with a booklet of the best hikes to do in Tierra del Fuego.
We're incredibly thankful for Mary's taking us in late at night when our original accommodation cancelled last minute. It turned out to be a great stay. Just a note to other travellers to read the description carefully: you will be staying in a private room in a small apartment that is shared with the owner and other guests. If you want more privacy, this is not the right place to book.
- Pietro (7/5): Good -
- Ciara (10/5): Exceptional - Mary was a fantastic host, she was so kind and made us feel at home. Very welcoming, the house was warm and cosy.
- Lukas (8/5): Very good - Mary was such a kind and joyful person to be with, the house was very warm and clean there was actually nothing really to complain about. you have to consider that this a family house where you are sharing the other rooms like bathroom and kitchen.
