Guest Reviews
- Jean-François (10/5): Exceptionnel ! - Au-delà de toute espérance !
Walima est une hôte d'une très grande gentillesse et l'hôtel est très bien placé, propre, calme et agréable.
On recommande à 200% !
- vandenboom (9/5): -
- Esther (10/5): - I loved the host! Very kind and helpful.
And the place is beautiful. Hot showers, great scenery, reliable WiFi, clean and cute rooms and lounges. Also close enough to the shops, toen and the trails.
Will definitely be booking again 😍
- Mary (9/5): Short and sweet. - Location was close to the marathon venue, so very convenient. Breakfast was good, beds are comfortable with mosquito nets and blankets provided, warm shower for the rainy days and close to nearby tuktuks and bodaboda. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Quiet neighborhood and wonderful garden if you want to read or just think. Nothing
- Isaac (10/5): Super relaxed home - Super clean and comfortable. I stayed for the kili marathon and it was a nice social atmosphere with several runners. easy access to food and shops without being in the busy center of town. Also had the best prices for tours No complaints
- Irene (9/5): Awesome - It’s great for budget travel Breakfast could have more healthy options
- Paulina (10/5): Excellent - Everything was super clean. The breakfast was great and the owner really friendly! Nothing
- Andrea (10/5): Grazie. - Lo staff, la colazione, la posizione fuori dal centro città, gli spazi comuni. Tutto. Nulla da segnalare.
- alessia (10/5): A wonderful place for a quiet, relaxing, and welcoming holiday! - I stayed at Hostel Kiliwood for two nights with two friends, and we had an amazing experience! The host is wondeful—she took care of every detail to make sure our stay was perfect and treated us with a delicious homemade breakfast each morning. She also arranged a fantastic day trip to the Materuni Waterfalls, which made our time in Moshi even more special. Nothing
- Tanya (7/5): Good for a short stay - The owner/host was very friendly, she made a simple breakfast which was a nice gesture. The location of the hostel is a bit far from the center but easily reachable using the tuktuk. The room was fine, the bed was cosy. There was unfortunately no hot water in the shower during my second night.
The neighbour's chickens make lots of noise throughout the night so you better bring some earplugs if you are sleep sensitive.
- Kumpei (10/5): -
- Janine (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely House and Garden, Weli is really sweet and helpful (and prepares a very good breakfast every morning) and it’s located right between the city centre and the green areas :)
- Nancy (10/5): Besides being wonderful in every way, Kiliwood is a great value. - Hostel Kiliwood was a lovely green oasis behind a wall on the main road. Welly and Nema were delightful hostesses, ready to help in any way—from delicious meals to laundry to friendly conversation. The hostel had clean, comfortable rooms, beds, and bathrooms along with many common area places to sit and relax. We enjoyed meeting other travelers from the UK, Kenya, Germany and the US. Kiliwood was the jumping off point for our bicycle tour so we appreciated Welly allowing us to store our bike boxes and suitcases there until we returned nine
days later. I had the privilege of visiting the local NGO that Welly supports. We also enjoyed the traditional Tanzanian dinners she cooked for us. Kiliwood is a short tuk-tuk ride away from Moshi and we enjoyed the many unique shops, restaurants, and culture there. Kiliwood touched our hearts in a way that we will never forget. We highly recommend! We liked everything about the property.
- Bram (9/5): Thank you Weli! - Really good location, just next to one of the main roads of Moshi. Weli (the host) makes you feel welcome at the moment of arrival. Very clean, and upon request really nice curry! Also for the runners, Weli is down for a run.
- Makobu (10/5): Lovely space. Value for money. Would love to come again. - I chose the place based on ease of access to the venue for the Kili Marathon. It worked perfectly as one could run to the stadium.
The breakfast spread is generous and has variety.
The proprietor Welly is an excellent host. She goes over and above to be of help to clients.
Highly recommended. To be honest there really isn't much not to like. It is a stretch to look for negatives. None from me.
- Mirella (10/5): Lovely local accommodation - It was very nice and clean, breakfast was amazing and nice space overall. Amazing host and good location. Fan provided. Me and my sister rented a room to stay before we went to Kilimanjaro and had a couple of days spare. Asante sana :)
- Vlada (10/5): Best place in Moshi - This was one of the best places Ive stayed in Africa, and the best in Tanzania. It is very chill, with a quite garden where I did yoga, with lovely Welima who cooks great and can help you with anything. I literally didn't eat out much cos the food here was delicious and affordable. The place is few kilometres away from the center thus it is very quite here, no bustling and all. And if you need to go there a private bajaji will cost like 2000-3000 tz and if you catch a public one it's 700 which is like less than a dollar. We came here with fellow volounteer I met in Arusha and had a great time and ended up extending for like a week, I didn't want to leave! Thank you for your hospitality and hopefully see you one day again when I come back to climb Kilimanjaro!
- Eduardo (6/5): 😕 - The hostel is very quiet, the room is comfortable, and there is hot water powered by electricity. There’s also Wi-Fi, though it can be intermittent. For instance, I had no internet in the mornings, but overall, I’d say it was stable. Additionally, the person who received me, the host, was very kind. I want to mention the most disappointing aspect of my stay: I had much higher expectations for an activity recommended by the hostel—a one-day trekking trip on Kilimanjaro. I paid $99 for the full package plus $83 for the entry fee (after my experience I can say it’s overpriced and very overrated), only to later find out online that the actual fee is just $70. I asked the driver, who was included in the package (along with the guide and lunch), about this, but he avoided answering and claimed he didn’t understand English when I spoke to him.
Unfortunately, the trekking experience did not meet my expectations. It was merely a rainforest hike. We started at Marangu Gate, but once we reached the higher point of the trail, near the crater elevation, we only stayed there for about 5-10 minutes. The guide kept rushing me, saying that if we didn’t return before 5 PM, I would have to pay an additional fee. I had never heard of this before, it was not communicated to me in advance, and I couldn’t find any information online about foreign visitors being fined for leaving after 5 PM.
Overall, this was not the experience I was hoping for. While staying in Moshi, I also had some communication issues with the host. However, I shared all of this feedback directly with her as constructive criticism whereas the host listened and received feedback with great openness . I believe it’s essential to be clearer about what’s included and not included in such additional activities. For example, after paying the entry fee, I was immediately asked to consider tipping, something I hadn’t been informed about beforehand. I did leave a tip, but I was also told I needed to pay the park entry fee via credit card. This led me to withdraw more money unnecessarily, though it was later resolved because I could pay the guide, who used his credit card for the transaction.
While this was not what I expected, at least I had the opportunity to meet this place.
- Simon (10/5): An incredibly charming hostel with a fantastic and innovative approach that combines travel and volunteering. - Kilowood Hostel is truly an amazing place to stay in Moshi. Situated just outside the town center, it offers a peaceful location on the road leading up to Mount Kilimanjaro. The facilities and grounds are fantastic, but what really makes this hostel stand out is its owner, Welmi, and her dedication to the local community. Kilowood Hostel combines travel and backpacking with opportunities for volunteering and supporting the region. Ask Welmi about the NGOs they partner with and their volunteer program. This is the perfect place for travelers who want to do more than just sightsee—they can also make a difference and gain deep cultural insights through their work. The combination of volunteering and backpacking is innovative and a great approach! I had the honor of getting a glimpse into the daily work of an NGO that helps children in need. It was an incredibly humbling experience, and one of the highlights of my East Africa trip. There’s none
- Albert (7/5): Good - It's 3,5km away from Moshi town, but it's completely worth it if you like to take a deep rest during night, and if you value quiet over location. Extra services (extra meals or trips) were quite expensive.
- Johannes (10/5): Exceptional - Welly was a super hostess who took care of all our issues and helped. The bathroom in the shared room is very spacious. Breakfast was made right to our liking.
- Mike (9/5): Great stay! - The host, Welima, is a gem. So resourceful and also a fun person to be around. She makes great food! The breakfasts I had were good and filling!
The hostel has a nice lounge area and the garden is beautiful with a few fruit trees. The showers have hot water. The location is great and quite easy to find.
Only thing missing is WiFi but I'm sure they will work on it.
- Deirdre (9/5): Home away from home! - Peaceful and quiet. Very clean. We'll stocked library and games for groups. Very nice host. That I couldn't stay longer :)
- Reuben (9/5): would love to comeback 🥰 - Quiet and cool place. Nothing
- Star (9/5): Cheap and cheerful, kind and caring hostel - I had a lovely time at Hostel Kiliwood with Welima, the rooms and facilities are cleaned more frequently than any other places I’ve stayed in my life 👌🏿. The breakfast is modest and nice, and it’s very nice that dinner is also offered- although I didn’t get round to trying it as there is lots of food to try in town! Which is a 700shilling ride away by shared Tuktuk’s- which are very frequent from the bus stop just down the road.
Excellent value. Welima is incredibly hardworking. Make sure to ask about the excursions offered- they are also very affordable, however also slightly less professional as a result. For me breakfast was a little modest and the dining area a little uncomfortable- but I thought it was completely suitable for the price paid- so I can’t really complain.
The description of the room was a little ambiguous. It had two bunk beds- not two beds. The room is for 4people, not 2.
- Thaís (10/5): Exceptional - This hostel should definitely be on the radar for anyone wanting to stay in Moshi a few nights for low prices, comfortable beds, warm hosts and delicious food offered. We had a super pleasant stay and would go back! There should be a bigger sign outside to become easier to identify the hostel!
- Almaz (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adeline (10/5): Exceptional - Such a nice host and nice place to stay ! I had fun and great time overthere. Thanks for everything and don't forget to visit her NGO also 🤩
- Sara (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (10/5): Moshi safari travel experience! - Well the place is good 👍.very quiet,it's clean place the food is perfectly cooked depending on your diet.,it has a hot shower.good customer services,it's privately secured.the cost is reasonable & affordable.for any travel enthusiastic should came and taste moshi travel experienced..any trips would wish for will be guided as soon as possible.with management. I couldn't find any
- David (8/5): Nice hostel in amazing environment - The hostel is located in a quite and nice environment, the host is sweet and everything was great. You can spot Kilimanjaro right from the garden, and keep your stuff in the hostel during the hike too. We had some electricity and internet issues during the stay. (5GB daily limit per day).
- Kentaro (10/5): Exceptional - This hostel is good for chilling
- Milena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Connor (10/5): The best - Willi the host here is the best! The place is very clean and chill. Comfy beds with everything you need in the room/bathroom. The host is a excellent cook and very accommodating and helpful for whatever you need when you’re there. It’s a very short ride to town and it’s nice that it’s surrounded by nature. This is the best place to stay in Moshi! Nothing
- B (10/5): Exceptional - A short bajaji ride from town up Uro road, Kiliwood is ideally situated on rolling green hills covered in beautiful vegitation. A really nice house with ample outdoor space, it has both private rooms and small dormitories, hot water showers, very clean, excellent meals when required, it is good value for the price paid. Welima, thank you for making my stay in Kiliwood both pleasant and interesting. I would and probably will stay there again. Perhaps a distant cock crowing in the early morning but really it was most charming.
- Sara (10/5): Highly recommended! - Very good value for money. Good location, nice and helpful staff.
- Julia (10/5): Recommendable - Budget hostel with reasonable price good for volunteers and backpackers!
- Ulises (10/5): Lovely place
Lovely place - Welly was a wonderful persone. Brillant chef and always helpfull.
perfect quality price ratio
- Shravanth (10/5): Great stay with homely vibe and super affordable. - The place was really nice and a good homely vibe. The host Wilema was amazing and super helpful. She helped us out with whatever we wanted and made sure we had a great stay.
The rooms were clean and quite comfortable. The room had only one light, it wasn't enough to cover the whole room well.
- Carol (8/5): It was a good, stay theres lots of opportunity. - Breakfast was great, lots of different options. Wilema always made sure the hostel was clean, worked around the clock, organized and also sprayed every night for mosquitos. It was in great location for going to Materuni to see the waterfall. There was hot shower water. Opportunity for volunteering, very nice front yard and house. In this area the electricity and wifi will go out unexpectantly so, it's complicated if youre looking to work from the hostel, or have business to take care of.
- Hugo (8/5): Very good -
