Guest Reviews
- Linda Maria (10/5): We had an unforgettable stay at Hideaway Tabaki – exceptional hospitality, a beautiful traditional setting, and an exper - We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Hideaway Tabaki – it truly exceeded all our expectations.
This is a traditional Japanese inn with a very special atmosphere. The beautiful Japanese garden created a sense of calm and made the stay even more memorable. We were lucky enough to have the entire place to ourselves, which made the experience feel even more unique.
From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed with green tea and a delicious Japanese dessert, which set the tone for the rest of our stay. Breakfast was also incredibly cozy and a perfect start to the day.
The staff were outstanding – always kind, attentive, and helpful. They offered to drive us to different places, gave great restaurant recommendations, and made sure we were well taken care of at all times. We truly felt looked after.
We were also surprised with thoughtful gifts, adding an extra touch of generosity and care to an already exceptional stay.
The futon and duvet were soft and comfortable, and we slept very well. It’s clear that a lot of care has gone into every detail.
We honestly did not expect to receive this level of service – everything was far beyond what we had imagined. We only wish we could have stayed longer, and we truly hope to come back one day.
If it were possible to give an even higher score, we would do so without hesitation.
Thank you for an unforgettable stay!

- Aleesa (10/5): A perfect experience, our deepest gratitude to our host - A life-changing experience staying at Hideaway Tabaki for my partner and me, as Kondo-san and his wife (apologies, did not catch her name) went above and beyond anything we have ever experienced in terms of hospitality. We came to Echizen as my husband is a printmaker, and this town is known for its history of papermaking. In the 24 hours we were there, Kondo-san made Echizen accessible to us in a way we would not have been able to experience on our own. They created an entire detailed itinerary for us, picking us up from the train station, taking us to private workshops, and setting up our incredible dinner reservation. The papermaking workshop he set up for us at Ryozo was unbelievably useful for my artist husband. Our izakaya dinner was one of the very best we had in our two weeks in Japan, and it was remarkably affordable. On top of all this, the house and our room were so comfortable and beautiful, and Kondo-san and his wife supplied us with treats, sake, and breakfast. The bed was more comfortable than the expensive ryokan we had just come from. We were really blown away.
There is a slight language barrier, but modern translator apps take care of most of this. Our only concern was that we could not fully express our gratitude to Kondo-san. We didn't ask him to arrange anything for us; we were just hoping for a nice place to stay. The price initially seemed kind of expensive, but you are essentially getting a historic home with a private tour guide, which is invaluable, and we would happily pay that rate again. In fact, we hope to return someday soon and spend more time in Echizen. My partner had been waiting his entire adult life to come here, and our visit couldn't have been better — our deepest gratitude to Kondo-san and his family. Nothing. We just wish we had more time in Echizen! Our only regret is not staying longer.
- Christina (10/5): Some of the nicest hosts I’ve met. Thoroughly loved my stay here. - Incredibly clean Beautiful house. Extremely nice and friendly hosts. Nothing. Everything was perfect.
- Wiebke (10/5): A hidden gem and unique stay - Our stay at Hideaway Tabaki was absolutely wonderful. To begin with, the house was elegantly decorated with flower arrangements and the traditional Japanese garden right outside the window is just beautiful - inviting you to spend your morning sitting on the tatami mats or in the chairs of the living room and disconnect. Sleeping on comfortable thick futon on tatami mat rooms surrounded by black wood and paper screens with a view of the garden after waking up was, however, only half of the experience. The staff was absolutely lovely, welcoming us with green tea and traditional Japanese sweets, but also helping us to make a reservation at a local restaurant; they also made sure that we weren't missing anything for breakfast or anything else during our stay. The location is central for reaching points of interest - the station is 3 min by walk, the Takefu knife village, papyrus village and pottery village are only 10-15 min by car each. We had a wonderful time, thank you so much for making this a unique experience in a unique house! We would have loved to stay longer. Nothing
- George (10/5): Wonderful short stay in Old Japan - Peaceful and quiet
Yet easy to get around the neighbourhood for food and sightseeing The lighting signs should be properly indicated.
Owner will be very helpful to give us a printed Instructions in English on the House rules and Services available.
- B. Bulic (10/5): - We stayed at Hideaway Tabaki with our family and were absolutely charmed from the moment we arrived. The house is huge, full of character, and beautifully renovated while preserving its traditional soul. We especially loved the view of the serene Zen garden, a peaceful view we won’t forget.
The place is well maintained and realy really clean, which is very important for us.
Traveling with two young children, we truly appreciated how welcoming and thoughtful the staff were. They went above and beyond to make our stay not only pleasurable, but also fun, including a lovely origami lesson that kept our kids entertained.
The facilities are excellent, but it’s the people who make the place special. We've stayed in many accommodations, but this one firmly belongs in our top 3 when it comes to unique charm and warmth. The breakfasts were another highlight, delicious and tailored with care to our dietary preferences.
A heartfelt thank you to the entire staff for making our stay unforgettable!

- Candy (10/5): Absolutely wonderful! - We were spoiled by the owners. They suggested restaurants and drove us to and from, as well as the Washi Village. Their breakfasts were delicious and so were the many treats they brought us. We loved how the Hideaway Tabaki has been restored. Can’t think of anything.
- Kelly (10/5): Charming, carefree stay with everything we needed. - The hosts were very kind and gracious to our family of 4. We were tired upon arrival and did not have time to have dinner. They had snacks available to us, along with hot tea and drinks. The rooms were spacious and clean. The garden was a lovely view to wake up to. Breakfast was great and served early enough that we could head out to our activities. It was so fun to stay in historic Japanese home.
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - The best three nights and four day stay ever. The family that owns this great place are amazing people. You feel like you are visiting friends.
During our stay, we made washi paper, visited a knife making village and a world-class ceramic museum, and purchased local artisan pieces. All of these activities were within 20 minutes of the Hideaway Tabaki.
We went to a local sushi place that needs to be a Michelin star restaurant called O-edot. It was AMAZING.
We feel like the Kondo-san family and Sakae-san are like family.
Thanks for a great visit Everything was perfect.
- Reihana (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing traditional property with very kind and accommodating owners. Worth the trip just for the stay. N/A
- Gwenllianjones (10/5): Exceptional - What an absolutely fantastic place to stay! Highly recommended. We were a group of 4 and had the whole place to ourselves. What a stunning space. The Tabaki team were very friendly, welcoming and accommodating.
- François-marie (10/5): The cherry on the cake - Absolutely stunning: get your own 150 years old house, after visiting several others in Japan😉! The staff really went beyond for us. We got the amazing luck to be there for the fireworks for the 15th of August: the evening was magical! Nothing
- Michelle (10/5): Exceptional - I recently had the pleasure of staying at the amazing Tabaki house in Echizen, and it was truly a memorable experience. The host went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect. He personally organized several tours for us, showcasing the best of Echizen's rich culture and history. His dedication and local knowledge made our trip extra special.
Tabaki itself is a gem, steeped in history with beautiful, well-preserved architecture. Every room tells a story, and the traditional design combined with modern amenities provided a comfortable and unique stay.
Breakfast was another highlight – delicious and thoughtfully prepared, offering a variety of local specialties that gave us a true taste of Echizen.
Overall, our stay at Tabaki was exceptional. The host's hospitality, the amazing house, and the fantastic breakfast all contributed to an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Echizen! There is only one double plug in the bedroom but plenty around the other rooms
