Guest Reviews
- Tutto
- Sebastien (10/5): - Nice old Ryokan. Very Good food. Onsen in the morning is fabulous. Room is spacious. People are very welcoming. A little bit old. 15 walk needed from main station. But bus are available.

- Hoai Anh (10/5): One of the best experiences one could have in Japan -
- Rigarda (8/5): Heerlijk.
- Anastasiya (9/5): -
- Chi Ying Jasmine (10/5): The best traditional ryokan experience I could hope for! - Incredible ryokan experience, 10/10! As a solo traveller I had a very spacious traditional tatami room and a private onsen to myself. It is situated on the river so the views are absolutely stunning. Walking towards the ryokan from the station felt like straight out of Spirited Away movie. I highly recommend having dinner at the ryokan, it was a massive feast with very good beef shabu shabu. It's a very traditional ryokan for the true experience! Nothing! Everything exceeded expectations.
- Rafoli (10/5): -

- Nicola (9/5): - Historic experience. Fantastic meals Family onsen was closed
- Catarina (10/5): - Amazing Ryokan, very close to the bus stop. Stunning views from our bedroom and excelent food. It was memorable! Nothing!
- Carla (10/5): -
- Gudrun Indridadottir (6/5): - Fallegt umhverfi. Futon dýnan ágæt Ekki vatn á hótelinu og ekki hægt að kaupa vatn. Prívat onsen orðið mjög gamalt. Vatn lak inn í herbergið. Húsið allt þarfnast endurbóta.
- Selime (10/5): Best stay İn Hakone - Bath, food, location basically evetything Nothing
- Ross (8/5): Excellent, i would recommend if you are looking for an authentic old skool Japanese experience - Excellent Traditional Japanese Ryokan. If you are looking for an authentic Japanese experience this is a good place. The Staff as always in Japan are really really Freindly, Traditional Japanese breakfast was really good. This is not a modern hotel the building is very old and lacks the comforts of modern hotels but i think it adds to the charm of the place. It has shared bathrooms, Spa etc.. realy nice place
- Feong Wen (9/5): -
- Angela (10/5): Wish we would have stayed longer - Everything
- Jacek (5/5): - Location was great and is next to a River, breakfast was good, it's next to a bus stop The hotel is not new, is run down.
- Simon (8/5): -
- Tiphaine (10/5): -
- Andrew (10/5): It was the highlight of our 2 week stay in Japan. Area (Hakone) is extremely busy - Very traditional. Free beer and whisky. Delicious and well presented food. Can’t think of anything.
- Jasmine (10/5): Beautiful, peaceful, relaxing stay with amazing staff. - The property is in a beautiful location. It’s far enough from the main area to be quiet and feel private but close enough to explore and shop. The views were amazing. The staff so were incredibly kind and helpful. There were free beverage bar in the lobby. Overall just a wonderful location to escape for a bit and relax. It’s a very old building which I personally loved. A family was staying in the room next to mine and at times they were a bit loud so I could hear them through the wall. I don’t think this is an issue of the property itself but thought it may be worth mentioning.
- Simon (8/5): vwry good - very relax place na
- joseph (9/5): Great place to experience traditional Japan - Traditional location Nothing
- chikkars (9/5): - If you’re booking Tōnosawa Ichinoyu Honkan, do yourself a favor and remember—it’s traditional. That’s the whole point. And honestly, that’s what makes it so special.
The rooms are charming, the onsen is fantastic, and the included breakfast is a great bonus. Add to that genuinely warm, friendly staff and a super convenient location (bus stop right outside), and you’ve got a great stay.
Excellent value for money—would happily recommend.

- KOUHEI (8/5): -
- Daniel (3/5): Not a good experience - The outside of the building and the surrounding nature, such as the stream and the rock formations along the valley left a very good first impression. The check-in was easy, the free drinks bar was a nice touch. Unfortunately, everything seemed to go wrong during our stay.
After checking in, I went to my room (The "Satsuki Room", with a private onsen) and immediately upon opening the door was hit in the face by a strong smell of cigarettes. There was a room deodorant in one of the cupboards that didn't really help. I opened one of the windows and the smell gradually cleared but left the room very cold. The rooms are small and could really do with some freshening up - as in the pictures, there were cigarette stains on the ceilings and burn marks in the curtains - This left a really grubby kind of impression. But, I was fine to let it slide given the open-air, private onsen attached to the room.
Unfortunately, from the outset of the stay and to check-out, the water in the private onsen either didn't run at all, or would run for 30 seconds before stopping or would be cold, so I never got to use the private onsen that I had paid extra for. I called the Front Desk (In Japanese) and was told that I could use the public onsen instead, which felt a little insulting given that I had paid extra to have a private one in my room. No other alternatives or compensation was offered.
You have to put out your own futon, which isn't what I would expect of a Ryokan that is trying to create a luxurious impression.
Breakfast was very early at 08:15, and looked fabulous. They took into consideration my travel partners' allergies very well and offered alternative dishes as he couldn't eat most things. However, as for me, I took one bite of the fish and it tasted old, so I was put off eating anything else and basically just ate a bowl of rice before going back to my room.
I tried once again to fill the private bath with water and got nowhere.
- Viola (10/5): Great stay. You get what you pay for, just do not expect western-style hotel comfort. This is a true ryokan experience, -
- Samantha (10/5): - Beautiful Ryokan, lovely room and tasty meals - a highly enjoyable stay. Nothing to dislike
- Megan (10/5): -
- Valeria (8/5): Relaxing stay that offers another side of Japan - This was a truly immersive experience, I felt like I was living in a different time. The food was so elaborate and beautifully presented. The yakuta was comfortable and very cute. And I really enjoyed the drinks machine and their coffee was truly delicious. If you want a relaxing experience that feels like the exact opposite of being in a big, crowded city then I recommend staying here. The bus ride there wasn’t easy and the town is quite small so it didn’t feel like I had much to do outside unless I took a bus somewhere but I could be wrong about that.
- Jérôme (8/5): - Le style auberge traditionnelle
Le repas typique
L'emplacement
- Peter (9/5): - Excellent location, excellent staff, lovely old building with a great vibe. Unfortunately, as we have tattoos, we couldn't enjoy the baths
- Tye (10/5): Worth it if you're staying in Hakone. - The food was amazing. The best I've had this entire trip. The location was scenic and convenient (next to a wooded river, but close to the station). A charming, historic building and friendly staff. Lastly, even though I opted for time in the private onsen, the public onsen IS tattoo friendly. I wish I stayed for longer than 1 day.
- Julie (10/5): -
- Damjan (8/5): -
- Andres (10/5): -
- Ochoa (10/5): Our stay was amazing. My wife and I loved our room with private onsen. The staff was exceptional. - The breakfast was excellent! The toilet tank needed to be filled to flush is my only complaint.
- Mingkwan (8/5): Nice location, Onsen is brilliant. - Beautiful view of the river, good room with personal onsen. Easy to get to by bus.
Staff are professional and very helpful. To get to Tonosawa train station is difficult because you have to walk up stairs. Not good for guest with large luggage but can use bus instead. Also no elevator in the hotel.
- Victoria (8/5): - The private onsen was very relaxing, the free drinks in the lobby were a nice touch and the staff were friendly The room itself was small
- jeremy (10/5): -
- Peter (9/5): -
- Natalia (10/5): -
- Pat (10/5): - Quiet, clean food was exceptional
- George (6/5): -
- Xavier (10/5): Beautiful old traditional place on the river with nice views. Great staff and rooms and big public onsen - Great staff and room, very traditional and old style with big public onsen, great breakfast and dinners
- Pete (8/5): -
- Denis (6/5): -
- Lemaire (6/5): -
- Cynthia (5/5): mixed feelings for a ryokan & staff that are trying hard but have no contol over the mold conditions - this is an absolutely gorgeous building.
the staff were gracious and helpful.
we had a relaxing soak in the nice onsen.
the location was scenic. our room was near the waterfall.
the rooms were spacious, consisting of a nice size private entry way, a small (8 tatami) room with closets, a large sitting room, probably 3 times the size of the small room which had a low table/chairs, tv, and plenty of space to set up futons. my son found the futons slightly thin, and stacked 3 of them for comfort. i used 2. tea and hot water. a small floor vanity. the balcony contained the sink & view of the river/waterfall.
the communal bathroom was on the far side of the floor, but easy walking distance. 3 toilets in the women's bathroom. one western, one japanese, one squat toilet. large tiled area with sinks. a vending machine was next to it
to shower, one walked down the back stairs to the onsen area.
there is a small shop next to the lobby with local souvenirs. free drinks and ice popsicles were available which were a nice touch after an onsen soak.
breakfast and dinner were served on the 4th floor.
i noticed some complained about the stairs & having to set up one's futons, but that did not bother us as we expected this. we only traveled with small backpacks for a few nights stay. our room was on the 3rd floor. i am a 66 yrs old woman. the food looked fabulous, well presented and beautiful, but the flavors were flat. i almost wondered if anyone had tasted them prior to serving. disappointingly, the tuna sashimi had gone bad. the miso was fine. the dessert was the only item that had a great flavor except for the sorbet which was too bitter.
the most unfortunate thing for this beautiful ryokan was the mold. the smell of black mold (stachybotris) was strong on the 3rd floor which we stayed on and on the balcony. they had fans running in the hallways, but humidifiers would have been more effective. our balcony was also moldy smelling. we kept the sliding doors shut. one could see the balcony sink tile had split from the walls in the corners. i am guessing that moisture had warped the subsurface. the only way one would be able to remove the mold is major remodeling, tearing down walls, removing the damaged parts, replacing & resealing the walls, windows, etc. very expensive to do. i am being treated for mold & am familiar with this problem. we stayed at the end of October when it was cool and rainy.

- Joseph (7/5): - Everyone was friendly and helpful. They also had a 24/7 drink dispenser, which was enjoyable. Room had nice view of the river. The futons weren't that comfortable; I got a neck cramp while sleeping there. The in-room onsen was aged and had corpses of insects all over the walls.
- LAURENT (10/5): Exactly what we expected -
- tegan (10/5): Great value for money in a beautiful historic building - Such a beautiful room on the river! Thought it would be chilly but the shoji screens are surprisingly good insulators. The private bath was great, and I loved the history of the building. It's a little rustic which might not be for everyone, but we felt it was very special. Location was really convenient for transportation also. We felt it was really good value for money spent. Would love to stay again! The water pressure in the shower could be rather weak, though it is a historic building with many suites requiring water at the same time so it is very understandable.

- Lydia (10/5): Amazing, authentic, traditional - The breakfast and dinner was absolutely incredible. A must add on. Incredible value for money. Felt very traditional. All the food was incredible and fresh. So much fun to try new things. The atmosphere felt authentic and traditional. Just to be aware it's authentic and traditional so aged but that is part of the beauty and exactly why we loved it.
- Aki (9/5): Beautiful traditional ryokan stay! ♨️ - I enjoyed the classic 古き良き日本旅館 charm of this ryokan. The room was clean, and the breakfast was delicious. If you prefer traditional accommodations over modern ones, you’ll definitely enjoy the facilities and the hot springs. I loved the morning walk to Hakone-Yumoto Station after breakfast. A convenience store nearby would be a plus, but still a great stay. Travel tip: Front desk was very helpful with the bus schedule to Odawara station. 🚌 But, it's been changed. The bus driver mentioned it can vary by season and business levels. So, double-checking helps. 😊
