Guest Reviews
- Michael (8/5): We wouldn’t have missed this for the world, but it is not for the faint hearted. - This was a fabulous experience for my family, to stay in a genuine Joseon period farmhouse that has been maintained but not overly restored. Although we have family living in a similar property 400 years old, this one felt more traditional in that it had been less provided with modern amenity and gave a real sense of a Joseon period home. That said, it was very comfortable indeed. The owner was helpful and interesting. It is good that it doesn’t have indoor plumbing as that adds to the authenticity, but you do need to be prepared to schlepp to an outhouse for ablutions! The shower is a showerhead in the toilet, though it is easier than it sounds and the water was really hot and strong. The linen was also not that fresh.
- Azar (10/5): A Truly Heartwarming Hanok Experience We arrived late in the evening, and our host, Mr. Kim, kindly welcomed us and exp -
- Curtis (10/5): “A truly authentic Hanok stay—rich in history, warm in hospitality, and deeply memorable.” - Staying at the Head House of the Andong Kim Clan was an unforgettable experience. This Hanok is part of the Folklore Cultural Heritage of South Korea, and you can feel the history in every corner. I was told the home was built in 1779, though the landmark sign outside suggests it may date even earlier. The owner, who was born in the very room we stayed in, and his wife were gracious and welcoming hosts.
The setting is beautifully rural and quiet—there’s no television, but instead you can enjoy the sounds of nature, whether it’s the gentle rain or the night chorus outside your window as you drift off to sleep. In the morning, we were served fresh corn cake and a crisp apple, a simple but heartfelt touch that made the stay even warmer.
As with any Hanok, the sleeping arrangements are traditional: you’ll be resting on pads placed directly on the heated floor. The pads here were not the thickest, so I doubled mine, but I still found the experience authentic and comfortable. The traditional pillows were surprisingly pleasant. The bathroom facilities—a toilet and combined sink/shower—are located in a separate building just a short, covered walk away, which added to the sense of staying in a historic setting rather than detracting from it.
Overall, this is not a luxury stay in the conventional sense, but it is a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in Korean history and culture. Any small inconveniences are far outweighed by the charm, authenticity, and hospitality you’ll experience. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a deeper connection to Korea’s heritage. Finding the property in the dark was a little challenging. There were no large signs indicating it was a Hanok Stay, and at first I wasn’t sure the historic building I saw was the actual place. I eventually confirmed the location by looking for the number 28 on the building. While the building itself was well-lit, it sits back off the street with space for a couple of parked cars, so it’s easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for.
- Hildegarde (7/5): - The hanok is over 200 years old, and is largely kept in its original status. Hence it was a real immersive experience. The rooms are 100% authentic and the host is still living there according to the traditional ways. The host is very friendly, helpful and always ready for a chat. The location is excellent, provided you come by car. Because the house needs to be kept in its original state, a compromise is needed regarding comfort, such as the long walk to the basic bathrooms or sleeping on futons.
- Hansuk (10/5): -
- Limber (8/5): Great Hanok house experience - The authenticity of this historical house is the main attraction. The owner is super friendly. The house has been in his family for 8 generations so he is proud to tell about the history of his family and about the house. There is a beautiful garden with a nice view of the hills. You really need a car to remain mobile from this location
- Hwang (4/5): Disappointing -
- Hwang (4/5): Disappointing -
- Juanita (7/5): Good - Was great to feel the house and how this typical way of living happens Could serve breakfast.
As it’s old it’s hard to keep super clean especially the shared toilets.
For what you get it’s too expensive
- Eun (5/5): Passable - The property was very beautiful and tradition.
Great experience for Foreigners. However the facility was poorly maintained and inconvenient. It could be better if the toilet and shower is clean and renovate in better way. It was beautiful building
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional - Super friedly owner and lovely house <3
- Dr. (7/5): Great experience, but quite bare bones -
- Francesca (8/5): Ancient house surrounded by peace - Kim, the owner, is a lovely person, ready to support and give information. The house is beautiful. The room was dusty and the restrooms were not properly cleaned
- Joris (7/5): Traditional experience worth the pain - Traditional Hanok house where you can feel and sense the atmosphere of traditional Korea. Very nice natural environment with lots of birds and silence When you are not used to traditional Korean matresses, it is hard to sleep. Joint badroom could be better
- Vanina (8/5): Ideal for 1 night to experience traditional home - Very nice to be able to stay at such a historical place. The owner was nice It’s far away from everything and no possibility of breakfast or dinner close by. Easy if you’re staying 1 night but we stayed 3 and it was not as easy without a car and buses not running on time
- Benkrug (8/5): Very good - The house was beautiful and well maintained. It felt like stepping back in time. The house overlooks a beautiful valley and village. The floor mats were comfortable to sleep on, and the room was warm. The host is welcoming, friendly, and informative about the history and general information about the house and the surrounding areas. The house was a bit dusty. I understand it's an old house, but it could be cleaner. The "kitchenette" was just a kettle, mugs, and a toaster oven; so it's not very useful. We were able to make tea and coffee because we brought our own. It would be nice to add some basic kitchenware like plates and cutlery so that guests can prepare a basic breakfast. Especially seeing as there are no places nearby that open early.
- Jakub (8/5): Very good - Very friendly host. The place itself is unique,an experience to remember!
- Smrketata (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is incredibly kind, and the place offers a truly memorable experience. We loved every moment! There is no store or restaurant nearby. If you dont Have a car this could be a problem so prepare yourself in advance.
- Holly (8/5): Great historic stay - We took a taxi easily from the main Andong town here although we could have also eaasily taken a bus too. There was also good car parking spaces. The house was historic and beautiful and the room comfortable and clean. The bathroom is outside but clean. The beds were really comfortable and a great authentic touch. The room was warm and the owner was kid and hospitable.
Note that there is no breakfast severed or restaurants nearby so make sure to eat before you go or bring snacks so you can enjoy the house well! I do wish there was breakfast offered - it would have made the stay a little more magical!
- Rory (9/5): Authentic, traditional Hanok experience. - Even though we arrived later than intended, we were met by Mr Kim who gave us a full history of the property, which was built in the 1700s. The room was traditional, clean and had a view over the valley. I wasn’t expecting breakfast (so that wasn’t a problem) and Mr Kim advised us where to go in the morning. He was very friendly and we would have liked to have spent another night. Underfloor heating for the traditional Hanok mattress. There were two shared bathrooms. Both had toilet, sink, and a hand-held shower. One had a little less space than the other due to an industrial walking machine.
- Gaelle (8/5): Very good -
- Menandros (8/5): Very good - The building history and the level of preservation throughout the years. Location is not central but still close to Hahoe village.
- Taejoong (7/5): Good -
- Bernice (9/5): An interesting traditional hanok stay - Host was friendly and shared about his personal anecdotes during check in. A unique experience as it is a traditional hanok stay. The floor and water heater worked well in the winter, and the room was well insulated. It is also located near a bus stop but it is important to be mindful of when the buses stop operating as well. The bus ride to Hahoe Folk Village took 5 minutes. The toilets are communal and shared with 2 other parties. We had to walk outside for about 3-4m to the 2 toilets in the winter. We also slept on mattresses laid on the floor, but it was comfortable and warm. These were not personally an issue because it is a traditional experience, but it might be uncomfortable for some.
One bug was also spotted on the floor, but that is all that we have spotted. The room is otherwise very well maintained and clean.
- Fred (9/5): Highly recommened - Authenticity Bring your own car
- Alcibiade (8/5): Very good -
- Ban (8/5): Very good -
- Michelle (7/5): Like camping in a charming museum - It’s a beautiful traditional old Korean dwelling in attractive surroundings. You wake to sounds of cock crowing and birdsong. The living room contains antique furniture and interesting ceramics, puppets, and rustic mobiles. Thin futons on a hard floor meant a limited sleep for us. A trip to the loo at night involved donning the supplied rubber shoes and walking 30 metres across a yard to shared facilities.
- Ian (9/5): A great true Korean experience - The host was fantastic and the experience truly Korean recommended to have the experience
