- Sandra (8/5): Really enjoyed it, will use it again when in Durham - Staff were brilliant, great size comfortable room Rat at the coal bunker one morning
- Julia (8/5): -
- Ronan (9/5): -
- John (8/5): Some good points and some not so good. Would stay there again but would not drink beer there - Location good.
Evening meal was very good and at a reasonable price.
Staff were very good and helpful.
Buses were very frequent into town.
Limited car park but was fine for us. There was mould in the shower.
The price of the beer was very, very dear that meant we only drank there one night.
The windows weren't double glazed and so road noise was a bit loud.
- David (8/5): Great location and value for money - Great location and really comfortable atmosphere Bathroom could be better
- Lisa (6/5): It was convenient and comfortable enough. We would eat there again but most likely wouldn’t stay again. - The gal who checked us in was great, very thorough with directions and took the time to answer our questions. The bathroom had a strange odor that would not dissipate with the window open or room spray. The mattress seemed ready for a replacement and the carpet needs a good cleaning (or replacement).
- StretchLongback (9/5): Very pleasant - Not a chain hotel, comfortable room. Very nice beer garden with heated huts. prices reasonable and staff pleasant and efficient. Would have liked a fan in the room instead of ironing board.

- Jacqueline (8/5): -
- Andy (8/5): Put this on the Map! - Classic Pub / Guest house. Very welcoming, quiet good food and beer. Magic !! Shower hard to control.
- ian (3/5): Poor standard for the price - Friendly staff No properly cleaned, not well maintained
- flaxman (10/5): -
- Claire (10/5): -
- Christine (4/5): Disappointing - Nice pleasant staff Rusty stainless steel bathroom accessories, black mould around bath. Very basic for the money
- Barry (9/5): - Very nice friendly atmosphere, staff very polite and very helpful
- Gillian (9/5): -
- Helen (8/5): - Comfy bed Noisey toilet everytime we flushed and shower was dirty
- Karina (10/5): -
- Benedict (10/5): - Food is class
- ANJNA (1/5): Very poor quality with unpalatable food. - Location Everything. The key for the room not working had to leave it unlocked after a customer helped open it. Loose electrical lamp. Water tap leaking. Food really unpalatable had to send even ice cream back. The food appeared reheated rather than cooked . Will not be staying or recommending it.
- Mike (6/5): Overpriced pub accommodation - The food was OK Location not great, room was clean but shabby. Bed uncomfortable, window didn’t close, door key problematic, hallway door handle hanging off
- DEREK (7/5): Good. - Spacious rooms. Parking. Black Sheep on tap. Only 7 mins walk to centre (10 back due to hill) Bathroom needs re-decoration. Shower pressure could be better.
Bon Pub-Hotel.
- George (9/5): -
- Lisa (7/5): Lovely overnight stay - Clean tidy good location
- Lesley (10/5): - The food was wonderful
- Juliette (10/5): -
- Bridget (9/5): Great for one night stop over - I have stayed here for one night for work a few times now. Excellent for my needs as a short walk from train and a friendly greeting from staff. Comfy clean bed and hot water in the shower is all I need for a single overnight and this provides it at bargain price. Nothing not to like
- carney (10/5): - Every thing Nothimg
- Hendry (8/5): Holiday - Central to city centre. No breakfast
- Richard (8/5): Clean comfy rooms, but a trek into the centre to find breakfast. - For my visit it was an excellent location but many visitors would have found it a hilly walk from the centre. Room was clean, quiet and comfy. 1) When I arrived there was no-one about, although the bar was open. I called but nobody came for several minutes. A man sitting in the bar with his laptop observed me, complete with my bags. Eventually a woman arrived. After I explained I had a room booked, the first thing she did was speak to the man in the bar and then went to find someone. After that service was excellent, but why didn't the man, clearly the manager, not offer to find someone to help?
2) Breakfast (not included) not available at a sensible time.
- Juliette (10/5): -
- Caroline (8/5): Lovely stay in Durham in a nice place conveniently located for the station - Very comfortable bed and room, clean and good facilities, friendly staff Bit of a leaking risk with the shower unavoidably flooding the bathroom floor due to bath and shower seal issue
- Kian (8/5): -
- Ian (10/5): Great :) - Close to train station and town Nothing, I enjoyed my stay and will stay again
- tash (7/5): -
- Ruth Shield (4/5): - The venue was close to where we were visiting. Cleanliness of room -
Cobwebs everywhere
Shower head was very dirty/mouldy (husband cleaned it with a wet wipe and it mostly came off, so just needed a good clean)
Pipes in the bathroom were noisy and vibrated when toilet was flushed and taps used.
The lamps in the bedroom constantly flickered.
- Jelena (10/5): - Very good option to stay in the place with nice clean room, good food and excellent live music
I highly recommend
- Brendan (10/5): TOP QUAILYTY FOOD / Staff Excellent to Deal with. - Every Thing
Paul the Manager
Could not do enought to help
The food is Top Quaility
Would reconmend it To any one just to call in and have a Meal.
Will be well impressed!!! Nothing.
- Hugo (5/5): - Location Dated rooms £130 a night

- Doug8654 (9/5): -
- Conor (8/5): -
- James (8/5): Quiet bit more like a guest house - Close to town Booking . Com
- Yuliia (9/5): Our favorite hotel in Durham. - Our favorite hotel in Durham. It’s close to the city center and especially convenient to the train station. We’ve stayed here more than once, so we 100% recommend it.
- Jelena (10/5): - Friendly and kind staff. Peaceful rooms
Food is excellent and affordable prices
Definitely recommend
- Emma (3/5): Not great. - Emily was friendly. The hotel was like Fawlty Towers. Only saw Emily. She showed me to my room upon arrival and what to do the next morning as property was closed, she worked the bar and probably cooked dinner! Chef had night off so chose the burger but the meat was revolting and really greasy. I clearly left the burger had half the roll and chips and wasn’t asked why I had left it. Very expensive meal. Didn’t feel secure in bedroom anyone could have shouldered the door and got in. The latch didn’t work on the door and it was only a lock like you get in the bathroom the other side. Bathroom was really dated used toilet roll and hand wash etc not new just didn’t feel clean. It had a smell to the hotel and my room was right at the front where there was a bus stop right outside the window and it was a really busy road so noisy all night. Nobody there in the morning had to leave a key in the box and let myself out. No facilities to have breakfast. Parking a nightmare. Had to call up the next day to get an invoice. Not worth £73 a night. Would not be going back or recommending this hotel. Emily was lovely though.
- Benedict (10/5): Perfect for Durham city, convenient location, great bar and food. - Heating in the rooms is great.
- Jane (8/5): Fair but could improve. - The room was large. Main bedroom area was spotless. Food was fantastic. The bathroom floor is sinking, some mould around the bath, one lamp had a damaged shade, the other just flashed. Extension lead on display at the side of the bed. Kettle had to be moved so lead reached the socket. Mattress too soft.
- Mr. C (7/5): Good short stay venue -
- Alexander (6/5): -
- Ludovica (9/5): - I’ll ok I’ll ok
- Ronald (7/5): Generally good - Easy access to rooms and layout of the premises Breakfast too late at 10.00am and no food available as the pub ran out of food in the evening
- Kyle (9/5): -
- Michelle (5/5): -
- Claire (4/5): -
- Paul (8/5): -
- sarah (10/5): - The location was away from the hustle and bustle of the centre. The room was a nice size, and the bed was very comfy. We definitely plan to stay again.
- Anthony (4/5): It served its basic purpose in reasonable comfort but reaction to cleanliness concerns disappointing - Location was excellent. Pub was nice and food was OK. Live music on Friday night was excellent and an unexpected bonus. Room was a good size. Bed comfortable. The plug hole in the sink was disgusting. caked grime around the waste. When mentioned to the manager, I was told that he'd speak to house keeping, but he made the comment " it is a very old building". The message obviously didn't get through as nothing was done. In addition :
The toilet cistern was leaking immediately after flushing. It didn't bother me, but again when mentioned for his benefit, the manager was unconcerned. The shower bracket was loose, the shower screen had a gap under it so after showering I had to mop up a big puddle with the bath mat. Grout of tiles needed a good clean. Cups not washed properly.
- Gail (9/5): Fab - Great location, very good prices, staff lovely, friendly and welcoming :) definitely stay again soon x
- Hiu Kwan (10/5): -
- Uvie (9/5): The staffs listen and they are generally lovely - Clean enough for the price. The full English breakfast is impeccable. Nothing … it’s just a basic place to stay overnight
- Reena (10/5): Great value for money - Location .
- Louise (10/5): Good location. Great food. Lovely staff. - Great location, 15 min walk to centre. Free parking. The staff were very friendly and helpful with advice about the local area. I had the best fish n chips I’ve ever had. Top marks to the chef., The room was very clean but the bathroom could do with a freshen up. This is a minor point. It was very clean.
- danby (8/5): -
- Wrigley (10/5): -
- Jillian (10/5): - Very nice room, excellent restaurant and bar just downstairs. The walk to downtown was not that far, and the room was great.
- Kehinde (8/5): Relaxing stay, few minutes from where I needed to go. - Prompt responses via email. Check in was smooth, staff courteous and gave detailed information. The room was comfortable and had everything I needed. Didn't try out anything on the menu but they have a lovely selection. There's a bus stop right outside the hotel.
- Rebecca (7/5): Comfortable room good value for money - Very comfortable beds We did have a room that had a leak but we staff aware when we left
- Jeong (6/5): -
- louise (10/5): Great location and facilities - Great location, lovely bar, fabulous breakfast Our room did smell of nicotine
- Mcwilliams (8/5): Comfortable stay and not far from main attractions price was good -
- Barrie (8/5): About a 15 min walk from Durham center, nice room , very clean . But weird tv and couldn’t get to wa - Attached to a lovely warm pub that serves a great Sunday lunch
- Laurence (7/5): Reasonably well located simple accommodation with friendly staff, located above a fun café/pub. - Good location relatively close to the station, not far from town. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The room was actually massive and overall pretty clean and tidy. All the basics seemed to be provided for. The shower was a decent power and temperature which makes a big difference. Didn't get a chance to try the food but the place had great vibes, and I'd happily check it out another time. There was some mould in the bathroom and the shower door didn't seal properly where it connected to the wall, so I had to jump out of my shower halfway through to stop water leaking towards my clothes and had to throw my towel down to prevent a large leak flooding the bathroom. Just a minor thing really and inevitable wear and tear, presumably previous occupants either haven't showered or failed to report it.
- Brian (10/5): - Very nice staff. Nice rooms. Easy to walk to center of town. Nothing
- Andrea (8/5): -
- Mary (7/5): Enjoyed it immensely - A very comfortable stay. Particularly liked the different seating areas Can’t think of anything
- Julie (9/5): Convenient for the city centre. - Nice big room. Bit of traffic noise.
No breakfast available.
- Brett (8/5): - Love the outside space and the little heated huts!
- alison (9/5): -
- Maxine (10/5): Enjoyed - Lovely place to go
- Joyce (10/5): Great would recommend Durham for wee holiday and to stay at the Cartologist - Breakfasts were good and plentiful.
Staff were excellent and very welcoming. Distance from town!!
But the taxi was only £5 for 4 of us to return uphill whereas we walked down.
- anne-marie (10/5): -
- Michael (9/5): Lovely - Great dog friendly place
- Robert (7/5): Nice pub and the food was very good. The rooms were dated and tired but ok for a one night stay. Lovely staff member, I - Nice pub Rooms were dated and needed som TLC
- Alice (10/5): Great stay! - Great location, the staff were so lovely. Room was clean, tidy and a good size! Good price to stay, would definitely stay again! Minor thing but the shower kept going from boiling hot to cold. The water constantly leaked over the bath so the bathroom flooring was flooded. I did love the shower pressure though.
- Joanne (10/5): -
- Jay Damain (6/5): -
- Grady (8/5): -
- Dave (10/5): -
- Carl (8/5): - Short walk to the railway station, there is limited parking, all surrounding roads are payment machines, but a lot of spaces. Very central for Durham, a park round the corner.
- Wigham (10/5): - Large room, clean.staff were very friendly, location was good, 8 minutes to center. Nothing
- Isabel (4/5): - No breakfast offered Should not describe itself as a gastropub. Bar closed before the advertised time leaving us with nowhere to go
- Dermot (9/5): - Staff v friendly and flexible. Relaxed atmosphere. Good food.
- Zelda (10/5): -
- Susan (8/5): Comfortable, conveniently located place at price - The Cartologist is a pub with 5 rooms upstairs. It doesn’t offer full hotel services. But my room was spacious, clean, comfortable and quiet. It’s an easy 15 minute walk from the station, or 20 minutes to the centre. I didn’t eat there but meals are available. Breakfast (not included in the room rate) is from 10.00am There was nothing I didn’t like. It suited me very well.
