Guest Reviews
- hans (10/5): Best Homestay Bakery ever - Come as a guest, leave as a Friend
This Homestay is 10+
If you wanne stay in Rantepao, go for the Castle.
The best breakfast in Asia, the staff is lovely, the view from the room is great.
Sarah can arrange guides, taxi, etc We stayed for 5 days, sad to leave.
Rien sauf
- Fred (8/5): Very good homestay with friendly and caring host - The balcony with view; we were staying in the Deluxe room with balcony
Nice breakfast with very delicious home made bread
- Lorenzo (10/5): - If you come to the incredible toraja region, do yourself a favor and book your stay at sulawesi castle. Sarah is a force of nature, a great host, a knowledgeable guide and a fantastic baker. You'll feel right at home from the moment you step in and you'll truly experience toraja culture in a unique way. Quiet, clean, comfortable room, and the best breakfast ever. Believe the hype!
- Natalia (8/5): - Great pleasant stay. Booked at the last moment on the same day and was really happy with my choice. Very spacious room and bathroom, beautiful balcony with flowers. Unique breakfast with variety homemade breads and jams. The last farewell breakfast Sara did for us quacamole salad to impress ! Loud church sounds at 5 am in the morning but we still were able to have good sleep comparing to other noisy places in Sulawesi
- Ana Valentina (10/5): - A typical review would say that the rooms are comfortable, the breakfast is excellent, and the location is convenient. Sulawesi Hotel certainly has all of this (the breakfast is outstanding, with homemade bakery items and jams every day), but there is one thing you won’t find anywhere else: Sarah.
Believe me, you need to meet her. She is one of those wonderful people you meet by chance and then find yourself hoping to encounter again. Saying more would spoil it.
- Randeep (10/5): amazing peaceful experience with the Sulawesi Castle family... - Location:
Sulawesi Castle is set in the most perfect spot—quiet, scenic, and surrounded by beautiful natural views that encourage you to slow down and breathe. Coming from a busy city lifestyle, this peaceful environment was exactly what I needed. The castle is close enough to the town and local shops for convenience but still set back from the main street, keeping the atmosphere calm. The locals were all warm and friendly, adding to the sense of comfort and safety throughout my stay.
Check-in / Reception:
Even before I arrived, Sarah’s communication was excellent. She had everything organised and made the entire process effortless. On arrival, her team greeted me with such kindness that any travel fatigue immediately faded. Sarah’s hospitality is genuine and thoughtful—she even arranged a seamless airport transfer, which I appreciated after a long journey. Check-in was smooth, relaxed, and welcoming, instantly making me feel at home. Throughout my stay, the staff and her family were always approachable, cheerful, and attentive, remembering small details that made the experience feel personal.
Facilities:
The property is beautifully maintained, peaceful, and spotless. Breakfast quickly became one of my favourite parts of each day: fresh warm bread and rich, fragrant coffee. The atmosphere throughout the castle is simple, comforting, and inviting. Whether relaxing with a book or chatting with other guests, it’s a place that naturally encourages you to slow down.
Room:
My room was exceptionally clean, bright, and comfortable. The bed provided wonderful rest each night, and the view from my window—sweeping landscapes changing with the daylight—was unforgettable. I often paused just to enjoy it with a cup of local coffee.
Overall:
Sulawesi Castle is warm, intimate, and full of heart. I genuinely felt part of a small family and miss the breakfast conversations and friendly faces. I would return in a heartbeat and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Sulawesi.
- Ramon (8/5): - Huiselijke sfeer, ontbijt is heerlijk met versgebakken brood, bananencake en zelfgemaakte jams, Sarah regelt alle trips, inclusief vervoer en gids.
- F.Rover (9/5): You'll feel like at home - It's a very nice structure, with spacious and comfy rooms
Sarah was very welcoming and I play guitar and sang Torajan songs with her family - a wifi repeater on the second floor could be good
- schoppsa (9/5): Auf jeden Fall hier buchen!
Alles wunderbar! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Alles perfekt

- Tonu (10/5): - Our stay in Rantepao was fantastic thanks to our host, Sarah! Sarah organized all our trips for us and even arranged a special dinner to top it all off. The breakfast was wonderful, and the room was very comfortable as well. We highly recommend this place if you want to experience local life and something truly special!
- Giudicatti (10/5): Great bed and breakfast - All. Fantastic breakfast, big and clean rooms Possibility to organize dinners. . Nothing
- Charles (9/5): Great place and great value. - Sarah and her family were amazing. She helped me book tours and transfers and was incredibly polite and informative. She is also a great cook. The place is pretty peaceful. Tana Toraja is definitely worth visiting The shower water wasn’t very hot. Even though there was no air-conditioning, at night it was fine to sleep because Rantepao is fairly cool. Ideally, the windows would have screens so you could open the windows and not worry about mosquitoes. Even though there weren’t too many mosquitoes when I was there. Overall, it was a wonderful stay
- Giudicatti (10/5): Vacanze perfette a Tana Torajia - All. The room very large. A fantastic breakfast with homemade bread every morning. We can arrange many excursions with them and also book taxis to Makassar or Lake Poso. Thank you Sara. Nothing
- Charles (7/5): A nice stay with a present and helpful host - The warm welcome of the host and her constant help throughout our stay. No hot water in the shower
No WiFi in the room
Little choice at breakfast
- Kim (10/5): Wonderful guest house in Rantepao - Sulawesi Castle was a wonderful surprise. The accommodations are very comfortable and central. Our room was quiet and spacious. But the best part of our stay was Sarah. She is an amazing chef, tour guide, and advisor. She helped us with extra services and woke at 5am to make us coffee for our early trip to the airport. The feeling of the guest house is warm and welcoming at all times. Highly recommended!
- Smith (10/5): - Sara is a great host and she always greets her guests with a smile and freshly baked bread. During my short stay there it felt like home. So, I was very comfortable during my trip. The kids are friendly and like talking to tourists but as said like many other people here you are treated like family.
So, I highly recommend booking here if you enjoy a comfy atmosphere.
- Daniela (7/5): - The host and her kids were so nice, always with smile, helped with everything The breakfast were really basic just some bread and jam, fruit, its more worthy to go somewhere and pay
You can hear EVERYTHING in your room, when there are people in dining hall under you, you can hear it like they were in your room, it was weird, didnt slept at all, still some name shouting or something like “psssst”
The host were such a kind person but i wouldnt go here again because of that, if you dont have earplug you will not sleep:(
Alles was top!
- Valentina (10/5): - Sarah is absolutely lovely and an amazing cook! Everything was just perfect—the room was spotless and super cozy. I couldn’t have asked for a better stay. Highly, highly recommended!
- Barbara (8/5): Friendly , comfortable Homestay - Sarah and her family were great hosts and made our stay very memorable.
Our large room with balcony overlooking the town and valley was very comfortable.
Breakfast of assorted home made breads and homemade jams and butters delicious.
We ate in twice.. both meals very tasty
as Sarahs a great cook.
Really enjoyed our 3 night stay. Nothing
- Rosan (9/5): We had informeren Sarah we were on our honeymoon. On arrival she had decorated the room for us, which was very sweet. Sh - The place was very Nice! The room was a good size and de bed was comfortable.
- Lark (9/5): Super friendly host and great accommodation! - Sara( is an amazing host. Very accommodating, helpful and friendly. She has lots of contacts in guiding and driving and can arrange almost anything you need whilst there. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Accommodation was very clean and the breakfast was superb with lots of freshly baked bread and cake. Would definitely stay again! Highly recommended
- Andrew (9/5): Great experience - Sarah is an excellent host. She was friendly, provided a great breakfast and helped arrange things like guides. A great experience. All good.
- Yapary (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (10/5): A beautiful stay and I hope I can return sometime soon. - Great, clean, room with a wonderful view of the valley in Tana Toraja, as well as a patio. High quality and reliable internet connection. Thoughtfully placed outlets for electronics (a rarity in Sulawesi!). The property is solar-powered, which is a nice sustainable touch.
There are hot showers, but as this is solar power, they take a few minutes to come to heat - I found this to be no big deal. It’s easy to walk from Sarah’s place to shops and restaurants in Rantepao.
Sarah is an incredibly nice and extremely interesting person, and I very much enjoyed getting to know her and her lovely family. She is from Tana Toraja, and can help set you up with guides, restaurant suggestions, and anything else you need.
Sarah is also an excellent cook - she makes homemade bread for breakfast each morning, and she can make dinner for you, including a number of Western specialities, if you arrange with her in advance. She has a huge, modern kitchen, which guests are permitted to use.
Sarah sources great, fresh produce from the area, and I believe she’s working with some friends to start up an organic farm - I’m excited to see where that goes!
I very much enjoyed staying here and have already suggested it to my friends and my family. I hope I can return soon. No complaints here.
- Kimberly (10/5): Exceptional - If you are planning a visit to Rantepao don't miss the chance to stay at Sulawasi Castle! Sarah was a fantastic host who went above and beyond to make our stay really special. Her cooking is amazing and breakfast was delicious with the array of freshly baked breads and cakes. The rooms are large and clean with great views out. Really can't recommend this place enough.
- Shinichi (10/5): Excellent view from the balcony and hospitality. - Fantastic view from the balcony, where you can see all the city and mountains.
The owner, Sarah, gave us very good advice for everything such as finding good local restaurants, where to visit and etc.
Also, Sarah kindly arranged bus booking and took us to the bus stop although she was very busy. Water pressure of the shower was not enough and the shower was not hot enough.
- Corinne (10/5): The perfect place to stay in Rantepao - Sulawesi Castle offers big, spacious rooms. From your private balcony you have a great view. The owner, Sarah, is the perfect host. She will help you with whatever you need. She is a very cheerfull and inspiring lady. This is the place to be if you’re visiting beautiful Toraja. We booked 3 nights, but extended our stay till 9 nights! And she bakes really delicious bread and cakes.
- Burt (10/5): WONDERFUL Homestay! - I highly recommend staying at Sulawesi Castle! My original plan was to stay two nights but I extended my stay four more nights. Sulawesi Castle has a lot of positive things going for it but the owner, Sarah, is at the top of the list. Sarah is a superstar of hosts! (5 STAR) She is very friendly, helpful, speaks English well, informative, and is one heck of a baker! (AND cook!) Also, Sarah has a very friendly, welcoming family. Breakfast was always a treat! There were three types of homemade bread (sometimes a sweet roll) with several types of homemade jam. Try the coconut jam. YUM! Fresh fruit was always served plus tea and real coffee. I was offered eggs if I wanted but the bread, jam, and fresh fruit were filling. I also ate dinner with Sarah's family twice and those meals were some of the best meals I had in my two month stay in Indonesia. I had a room overlooking the mountains which was incredible and well worth the price! There is a deck so one could enjoy the view over coffee or a cold beer which you can buy on the premises. My room was spacious and there was plenty of light due to large windows and walls that were painted white. The room was very clean and wifi worked just fine in my room. Drinking water is provided. Sarah rents motorbikes and she can arrange tours for you. Sulawesi Castle is not in a busy area and restaurants, convenience stores, and a grocery store are nearby. I had a great time at Sulawesi Castle and plan to visit again next year. Thank you so much Sarah and hello to your family! Can't think of anything. All good!
- Marcin (9/5): Superb - Sarah is really taking good care of her guests, her homemade bread are one of the best I’ve had in Indonesia. Rooms are spacious and what is equally important very bright. You will find there necessary furniture. I was really happy to stay there.
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Chantal (10/5): Best stay of our vacation - We had an exceptional stay at Sulawesi Castle and the host truly made the experience unforgettable. From start to finish, everything was perfect, and we enjoyed our stay more than any other. The host was incredibly authentic and warm, and we appreciated the time spent with her—especially the lovely day out and market visit. The view from our room is something I’ll never forget; it was truly breathtaking.
We also went on a few tours, and while we didn’t quite connect with the tour guide, we learned a lot about Toraja unique culture,we were grateful that the host upgraded our room, which we appreciated a lot. The area is a must-visit, and although the car we traveled in could use some work, the driver was fantastic.
I highly recommend reaching out to the host for any information about the area—she’s extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what she does. It’s clear that she loves sharing her local insights, and you can feel the care she puts into making each guest’s experience special. We felt at home.
Thank you
- Jamie (10/5): Exceptional - The property is amazing and Sarah is even better
- Frances (10/5): If you visit Rantepeo you must stay at Sulawesi Castle - Our spacious, comfortable, colourful room with verandah was wonderful and Sarah was the perfect host. Her cooking skills were outstanding and we had the pleasure of having dinner with her and her extended family. Sarah is a generous, beautiful person and this is the best place to stay. We also his motorbike and travelled around the area to the market and up the mountain to see the great view. Nothing
- Pierre (8/5): Great host family and carefully select your room - Fantastic host and very helpful, great location, very nice and ample breakfast, We chose a room that was somewhat small and warm at night. That was our fault during reservation.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): Great homestay with great meals and lots of love. - Sarah and her family do an excellent job helping travelers feel welcome. Sarah is a wonderful cook and helped me decide what to do and where to go in Toraja.
- Sonja (9/5): Lovely Homestay with a good spirit - Great breakfast! Sarah is baking her own bread. We got fruits, selfmade jam and self made bread (banana-bread, baguette, pumpkin-bread, ...). Sarah has a lot of contacts and is doing a great job in advising her gests in every aspect. We also enjoyed dinner with her, which was very familiar and excellent. She is a great cook and a lovely person that you should not miss when visiting Tana Toraja. It would have been great to have AC or mosquito-nets in front of the windows or over the bed.
- Britta (10/5): Best stay in Rantepao! - The property was amazing! It’s really beautiful and we felt right at home. Sarah the owner of the place is such an amazing person. She is super welcoming and is helping you with everything. The breakfast was amazing. Sarahs loves to bake and therefore the breakfast was always selfmade. Even the spreads are selfmade. We stayed for three nights and also eat there every night. The dinner was just the best food we had in whole Sulawesi. We even got selfmade dessert after every dinner. All the cakes she was baking were just amazing! I can highly recommend this place! A friend of Sarah is a yoga teacher and we were even able to do some class with her! Also the eco farm who Sarah is recommending was amazing to visit! We absolutely loved this place ! Nothing
- Franziska (9/5): Welcoming and relaxed place, ideal for exploring Rantepao - Super lovely and helpful host Sarah, excellent breakfast and dinner, amazing views from the balkony, very close to the center, but located in a nice and quiet area. An extra bonus was Sarah’s aim to run the place environmentally friendly. Nothing
- Marc (10/5): Fabulous place - Staying at Sarah's place is like staying at a very good friend's. She takes a lot of time to discuss with you about a lot of things in Indonesia. The location is perfect, with a great view over the valley. You can get to the center on foot and yet you are not bothered by the noise of cars or trucks.. Breakfast is fabulous, with some homemade cakes, jams, all more delicious than the others. and served with Toraja country coffee. Rooms are very clean and very light.
Sarah serves dinner on request. For visiting the country, we had a guide named Rudy who was very talented and helpful. You may ask Sarah for his information. Nothing
- Raja (10/5): Great place to stay when in Toraja, Sara is amazing and she recommended a great tour guide (ask for Astro!). - - exceptionally friendly owner/staff
- conveniently located
- big and clean rooms
- amazing breakfast and dinner - nothing
- Yitshak (10/5): Exceptional - sara the owner is amazing.
the best homestay. nothing
- George (10/5): Best Banoffee pie in the whole of Toraja and even Indonesia! - Sarah who runs the property is very amazing person with so much posative energy ..this is such a unique and friendly place..I would highly recommend to anyone to stay here!..she cooks the most amazing food and bakes the most excellent bread..a true living legend ! Nothing to say here was all good vibes
- Olivier (10/5): Do not miss this place - One of the best place I have ever been at. Sarah and her family go above and behond for guests to feel at home and have an amazing time. Find me a guide quicly. Food (breakfast and diner) were amazing. Room was big and clean. Do not miss this place Nothing
- Matt (10/5): Wow, It's Wonderful - There are only 2 metrics you need to know: 1) Most guests extend (including me); 2) Guests leave other guesthouses in town to come here instead. Sarah and her family are excellent hosts. The food is next level amazing. The facilities are new and clean. The location is convenient and quiet. Tours, transportation, and motos can be booked here easily. The facility offers solar power and home cooked meals. It's worth it to book the premier room for a wonderful patio and view.
- Michelle (10/5): Stay here! - This is a special homestay and we had a wonderful time here. Everything was excellent from the clean cozy room to the delicious breakfasts, great location and views. Sarah is a talented baker and cook. The best part is Sarah and her family. They were so helpful, thoughtful, and kind.
We loved talking, cooking together, and exploring. Just one example- I mentioned I like mangosteens and Sarah found some to serve with breakfast even though they weren’t in season and were hard to find. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Rantepao, I cant imagine a better option. We hope to be back someday! Everything was great
- Femkebroers (10/5): Exceptional - We had a great stay here! The room was very comfy with a super nice view from the balcony.
Bed comfortabel, everything clean, nice little dressing.
Sara was super nice! She is such a lovely and caring person. She does her upper best to make everybody happy. She speaks perfectly english and provided us with a lot of useful information.
On top of that, she is a great cook! The breakfast is amazing! Fresh fruit and homemade bread and different kind of jam. Even cake! Sooo lovely! The morning we left it was really early and she made a foodbox for us. I can tell you this box made us sooo happy for the long journey we had to make to Tentena.
Thank you very much for everything Sara! 🙏 Apparently there was a problem with the hot water. But if you like they will cook you some hot water to wash yourself with. So not really a problem.
- Lena (10/5): I loved it - Sarah is such a lovely host. She made my stay as comfortable as possible.
She organizied guides, driver and bus tickets.
For breakfast she baked bread and cake herself.
I would definitely recommend to stay in Sulawesi Castle. -
- Hettie (10/5): Exceptional - Such a great find! Spacious comfortable rooms with everything we needed. Good location just out of the busy bit of town. Sarah's sister Dina hosted us and was so kind and helpful, with the breakfast being 10/10! Our best breakfast in Indonesia yet. Hot water for the shower would be lovely if possible to update
- Michael (9/5): High feel-good factor - Spacious, stylish room with natural wooden furniture, the terrace overlooking Rantepao. Breakfast with homemade bread, cakes and fresh fruit. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Just minor !
- Stijn (9/5): Toraja - The host (Sara) is soo nice and helpfull.
Our room was super nice with a view over the city during sunset!
Also we had a good guide to go through toraja (Mr. Gibson).
We really loved everything about this place. Nothing really..
- Petra (10/5): Simply perfect - Everything! Our stay was perfect. Sarah (the owner) is a very great host and helped us with so many kind of different things! She and the whole family are incredibly kind. Sarah organized for example a guide, a motorbike and our bus back to Makassar. When somebody of us felt sick, she said was very caring and she did everything that we felt really comfortable. On top of all of that, she is one of the best baker we have ever seen (jam, bread, cake… all is homemade) and definitely the best in Indonesia!! She is creative, innovative and she built here in the middle of Tana Toraja a place where everybody just can feel like home!
We would recommend our guide ASTRO:
Sarah organized a guide called Astro. He is truly passionate about his work and tells you about everything and when you have a question he definitely will answer it. He did never hurry us and gave us all the time we needed to process this amazing culture in Tana Toraja. Astro was every time the first one, who knew news and rumors and that’s why we spent two wonderful days with him and enjoyed every single minute with this great guy. There is nothing we didn’t like
- Eric (10/5): The most at HOME I felt staying one month throughout Indonesia. - SARAH, the owner, is amazing. If you stay anywhere else in Rantepao you have dropped the ball.
I real homestay and felt like party of the FAM.
Especially, making dinner with CHEF Melissa. I got the Sambal recipe I have been looking for!

- Charles (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice place, and Sarah was a really great host !
Also exceptionnal breakfast for Sulawesi with homemade breads, spreads and jams. And you can get up late and still have your breakfast 😊
- Anna (10/5): Just the best place to be! - Sarah the host herself is just the best, funiest and sweetest soul ever! Sie helped us so much and made our stay just more then perfekt from the minute we stepped into her door at 5 am :)
Homemade breakfast, very clean room, balcony, best communication, scooter rental.
Whole Team is amazing! That we had to leave.. we will be back!
- David (10/5): Fabulous - Sarah was the perfect host who made us feel welcome and was readily available to help in any way including collecting us from the airport and organising a fabulous guide (Elda) for us. We liked it so much we extended our stay and tried 2 of the rooms. Both were spacious and comfortable. The terrace room with a view was a great space for yoga. Breakfast was a treat with a variety of home made breads, jams, cake and local coffee. We really couldn't have asked for more. It's worth noting that there is no hot water from the shower as the system was broken. The offer to heat the water was always there and we only felt the need to take up that offer once.
- Mia (9/5): Superb -
- Inge (9/5): Perfect stay and great food ! -
- Geert (10/5): Just a perfect spot - Lovely guesthouse with a lovely host. The perfect spot to discover this beautiful region. We really hope to come back here 'soon'! No hot water during our stay, but this was a temporary (minor) problem that didn't really bother us.
