Guest Reviews
- Ian (9/5): -
- Davids (10/5): -
- Thalia (8/5): Temenos: a spiritual retreat - The grounds are peaceful as always. I love the peace of the well. I had a beautiful, quaint cottage. Peacocks and cats: love them all. The sprinklers were on a lot, and the door to Temore was open, and water splashed into the sacred space. Candles and matches were wet.
- Neil (10/5): -
- Elsi (8/5): Temenos is an enchanting place to have a retreat, all by yourself or with other people - I liked all the food at Temenos.
The staff was accommodating and friendly.
I loved the beautiful bushy gardens all around the cottages. The cupboards for clothes were dilapidated.
- Karen (10/5): If you're looking for a special place to rest and reflect, look no further. - Temenos is a special place that I have been going to for many years. It is an oasis of green in the otherwise dusty but quaint town of McGregor. Even in the height of summer, the lush vegetation and stone cottages mean it's never too warm. It is an ideal place for rest and reflection - a true retreat. The mosquitoes! There are plugs and mosquito nets in the room, but don't forget your Tabard/Peaceful Sleep for when you're sitting on the stoep.
- P. Doune (7/5): -
- Brid (8/5): A great place to relax and unwind. - We had two great lunches and one amazing breakfast in the attached restaurant. The pool was lovely as were the sun loungers. Not having WiFi access in the room was an inconvenience
- Manuela (8/5): Very peaceful! Loved the gardens, bird life and Charlie the cat! Wonderful staff, good food, but a bit of an upgrade nee - Very beautiful area! Garden gorgeous. Like the fact that there is a full on restaurant on the facilities! Lovely staff! Very peaceful. Rooms could do with a bit of an upgrade! Needs to still keep its old cottage feel about it but an upgrade necessary!
- Annelize (10/5): -

- odette (7/5): - Beautiful tranquil location. Safe environment for a solo traveller.

- BB (10/5): A perfect place! - We absolutely loved Temenos in every way. The cottage was lovely, very warm and comfortable. The gardens and various rooms are so tranquil. A real oasis. The restaurant was fantastic and the location is just perfect! Nothing!
- Andre (5/5): Just a pass. Okay but nothing special - Location was good. Convenient. But too basic The bath was too small to bath. The bed too small. Needs a shower or a bigger bath. Friends had two single beds...its very basic
- Yolande (8/5): -
- Mia (9/5): Cutest Garden cottage - Really good location, close to everything. Safe off street parking. Very cute rustic cottages. Beautiful gardens. Well equipped kitchen. Really comfy bed. There was electric blanket on the bed so very comfy to get in in the cool evenings. Restaurant next door had really good pizza. I did not mind anything, but for review purposes:
If you don't like spiders, then don't book here. Cottages are surrounded by luscious gardens so it's natural that they will get into your room.
There is a thatched roof and thus room does get dusty, but ours did not feel unclean at all.
This is not a 5 star hotel, it is very basic accomodation, more a rustic cottage to wind down and just relax with a bed and a shower.
There is no TV, which was not a problem just FYI.
- Deirdre Stodel (10/5): Peace and tranquility - Temenos is a very special place , this was my third visit. An absolute gem for peace and reflection.
- Trautmann (10/5): The place where my soul sings - The tranquility, the beauty, the good company and good food.
- Greg (8/5): Very good -
- Chanel (4/5): Has this sanctuary lost its charm? - The gardens are really beautiful creating a tranquil setting. .
The town is so cute. * Disclaimer, we did tell the receptionist when we checked out about our stay, so hope they make changes ASAP.
Room
This bed definitely needs to retire. Springs poking into your back for 3 nights aren't fun.
The rooms are very tired and outdated and in need of a refresh. Old bedding, tiny old towels that have been through the washer far too many times. Only one chair in our room you could actually sit on so we permanently had to sit in bed.
The insects ate us alive both in the room and atbthe restaurant. No Insect repellent or doom available ( we got one of those plug ins in the room that didnt work). We went out to buy Doom to try and get some sleep.
The bathroom needs a paint. Another bath mat would get great as it gets very cold at night on those tiles.. Shower also needed a new shower trap as this one was broken and you could see all the gunk down the pipes.
Maybe a scrub ontop of the shower curtain rod.
We just felt like everything was a little dirty and dusty. The whole room could do with a scrub and the kitchenette cupboard could do with a de-clutter.
Wifi
The advert is misleading. There is no WiFi on the property accept for the restaurant which was very very slow.
Pool
Was one of those sunny weekend and we were so happy there was a pool. However we couldn't use it as it was dirty and infested with dead mosquitoes. Luckily a neighbour in the area offered her pool to me when she heard.
Restaurant:
Having eaten at the restaurant during my last visit in 2023 and loved this hidden fine dinning gem, there certainly has been changes... not for the better. The food lacks flavour. Menu is very basic to be honest and the "6 hour ragu bolognese" arrived cold and with no flavour. Also found is very expensive for what we received.
- Megan (9/5): Tranquility and a space to recharge your batteries. - Peace and Quiet. Beautiful gardens. Quaint cottages. Great restaurant. A very special place
- Lilly (10/5): It’s a sacred experience - Peaceful awareness
- Jackson (7/5): Good -
- Michelle (10/5): Discover a Wonderland - Magnificent garden filled with surprises as you wander through. Quiet retreat but close to all the spots surrounding McGregor. Definately returning for a longer stay next time.
- Crawford (4/5): Beautiful, peaceful gardens, but, not enough comfort for the price. - We found the food overpriced for what we received. Waitron was fair. We didn't find the menu too exciting. The gardens are beautiful, peaceful and tranquil The beds in the Assisi room were awful, hard and uncomfortable. The drains in the shower and basin were completely blocked. Shower floor was very slippery, with no mat or anything to make it safer. No shelf or vanity in the bathroom, so nowhere to put your toiletries. Only one hook behind the bathroom door to hang 1 small, old bath towel to dry, the other guest must hang it on the back of a chair to dry their towel? The bedroom door is broken at the bottom, so there is easy access for insects and frogs. No microwave to heat up any food. Only enough milk for 1 cup of tea or coffee. I felt that this could be a little more generous. Pool area needs some serious attention, it is dilapidated and in need of some TLC. We asked at the restaurant, for swimming towels on Saturday, and were told that we can't have, as reception is closed for the whole weekend, they don't have access to towels for us???? Then why not advise guests to bring their own towels? Or have guests sign for them, and then if they don't return them on departure, you can charge them? Interestingly, when we departed on Sunday, we found reception open, which is where we dropped off our towels and keys.
- Meghan (7/5): Always a peacful getaway from it all! - Very central and safe for a solo traveller - always a peaceful getaway! Due to people checking out late, I was given a different room to the one I requested and then had to move after one night, but management were very helpful and accomodated me in a room that was just as good.
- Hanne (7/5): Very nice and quiet garden but an upgrade of the accommodation could need an upgrade. - The facilities were ok. The gardens were lovely. The lack of sleep due to the mosquitos. An aircon could have helped. accommodation in need of an upgrade.
Do not order the burger at the restaurant. the rest looked ok.
- Leigh (6/5): It was extremely tranquil and peaceful. felt like it was enveloped in an aura of spiritualty! - did not manage to eat in restaurant unfortunately as it looked and smelt heavenly. i would have liked the option of a shower.
- Amanda (10/5): Exceptional - Fabulous place to find peace. Very realaxing
- Shannon (8/5): Very good - Beautiful gardens. Was very hot so enjoyed the pool.
Restaurant food was good. The fan in our room was broken.
Winter electric blanket should be removed in summer.
Mosquitos at restaurant.
- Monique (8/5): Very good - The Breakfasts at your restaurants were great Rooms are a little tired, need an upgrade
- Gail (2/5): Very poor - The gardens While the gardens were beautiful and well-maintained, our experience was heavily overshadowed by the cleanliness and upkeep of the room, which made our stay uncomfortable and led us to leave before 6:30 AM a day earlier
The specific issues we encountered include:
Cleanliness of the Room:
Dirt marks on the wall behind the bed.
Spider webs on the shelves and patio shading, making it unpleasant to sit outside.
Cockroaches in both the bedroom and bathroom.
Condition of the Bathroom:
The shower was severely infested with mold, which was particularly concerning.
Overall Maintenance:
Items hanging off the walls, as captured in photos sent to the admin email
These issues significantly impacted our comfort and peace of mind, resulting in a restless night and the decision to leave early. Unfortunately, there was no staff available when we departed to address these concerns in person, which is why I am reaching out via email to the receptionist, who noted on the 26 Jan that I would get a full refund, of which I have followed up twice and had no reply as of yet
- Katharine (9/5): Superb -
- Werner (6/5): Pleasant -
- Meghan (8/5): Lovely escape from it all! - Always a welcomed and peaceful getaway, I try to do it a few times a year! I love the self-catering aspect and the self contained large room with fireplace and ensuite bathroom (which included a tub!). Temenos is very centrally loacted and everything is just a walk away - such a treat for a solo getaway. Very little to no WiFi in some of the library rooms. Restaurant is expensive and not worth it, ended up buying food in Robertson.
- Blanche (3/5): Dissapointed by the above - The garden and chapel Booked 2 single beds receptionist said this was allocated but only 1 dble bed in room
Unkept benches/chairs in garden
Mosquito nets not covering bed- lots of mosquitoes in room
Massive spider on bathroom wall
- Tess (6/5): Pleasant - Admin kept harassing me with invoices after I paid with booking.com
They need aircon
- Karen (8/5): It is a pleasure to be at Temenos. - It’s incredibly beautiful. It is sanctuary that is cared about and cherished. Noise travels and it can be noisy over the weekend
- Robyn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Taleszia (8/5): One of a kind - Beautiful spaces, really special place. Although beautiful at first, the peacocks on the roof in the very early hours of the morning were a challenge.
Neither was the restaurant food very good. Would genuinely suggest to get the gentleman from 51 over for a few suggestions. Was one of the most delicious meals over there. Can’t fault the staff, they were incredible.
- Rachelle (6/5): Bit disappointing - No milk in unit upon arrival, no wood for the fireplace and the coffee was so little you could barely make a cuppa plunger coffee.
- Hardwig (1/5): Totally taken aback by the rat excrement found in our room and coffee cups - I have taken a video should you wish to see - Totally taken aback by the rat excrement found in our room and coffee cups - I have taken a video should you wish to see - please refund us without any delay Totally taken aback by the rat excrement found in our room and coffee cups - I have taken a video should you wish to see - please refund us without any delay
- Govindasamy (8/5): Peaceful - I liked the tranquility and the gardens and some dishes on the menu and the friendliness of staff and owner. the library. they should put up signage - I kept getting lost. The mosquitoes and the desolateness on Sunday night and the fact the doors didnt have keys and the latches were not latching. Some doors didnt have keys - like the door to the patio. This connecting door was from the parking to a back entrance that didnt have a safety lock. I had my laptop and other valuables that could not be secured away. The tiles in shower and the towels were balck so you could not determine if they were clean. the unit needed a GOOD CLEAN.
- Irene (10/5): The Silence Sings here - Everything!! This is such a special, unique space. The spirit can soar here in the beauty of nature and the sacred spaces. Nothing.
- Jan (9/5): Comfortable accommodation amid a beautiful garden - Beautiful, peaceful gardens, an extensive library and many little secluded spaces for meditation or reflection
- Zelda (8/5): Very good -
- Dieter (9/5): Superb -
- Elzine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tasche (8/5): Very good -

- Saldanha (10/5): Happiness is.....quiet time at Temenos - Everything was great. The staff were engaging and friendly. Very helpful and kind. The garden space lends itself to deep reflection and an understaning that to quiet the
mind is an important practice. Temenous is my happy space. How can I forget the gardener, a keen gardener and pleasant person. I learnt so mych from him about tje different species in the garden. He works close to the gate.A suggestion to the employer to help staff to get acknowledgement for the experience and knowledge gained working at Temenos. The recognition of prior learning was implemented post 1994 to give people an opportuniy, which many didnt have, to obtain a qualificaion..The staff we interacted with all said they enjoyed the work space. Also had a wonderful
body massage.Athol created a relaxing and inviting and respectful space. Started to save for my next massage !!! Will be back back to Temenos.. Nothing, oh yes the cat in the restuarant.I am not comfortable around cats.Staff were very supportive.
- Stefan (9/5): Superb -
- Gillian (3/5): Poor -
- Ndalamba (10/5): Thank you Temenos 🫶🏼 -
- Tanya (8/5): Beautiful retreat - Magical gardens & places to retreat. Staff are friendly & pool was a great plus! I landed up in a very dark cold cottage & would have preferred to have known this & been given a choice. Whilst the gardens are beautiful & maintained my cottage felt shabby & unloved.
- Jenn (8/5): Service was great. So was restaurant. - Didnt have No people to direct us after4.30 just arrived
Map required. Found it later
- Powen (10/5): Silence into bliss and love - Garden is a mystery itself. Everyday I’m picking up new green cookies and the plants say hello to you in different ways depending on the hours of the day. What a wonderland
- Powen (10/5): Measured and unmeasured by the unspoken light - I’m dancing in the unknown garden of light. It showered me with ecstasy and sunlight. Please indulge yourself once in your lifetime in such wonder!
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gillian (10/5): Restorative, Restful and a joy. We will be back - What a beautiful sanctuary. The perfect place to revive, rejuvenate and relax. The garden is a spiritual and lush oasis. So much love and care has gone into every private corner.
“Tebaldi’s” their restaurant, is a hidden gem. We had an exceptional meal. Fine dining indeed. Nothing
- Elette (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marc (8/5): Very good -

- Sonia (7/5): Good -
- Elize (7/5): Great if you need some time alone! - The gardens, friendly staff, location and restaurants. Housie was very cold, dark and utensils a mix. No microwave oven. No place to unpack.
- Tania (10/5): Amazing retreat! Staff are all attentive and friendly. - Awesome retreat with amazing gardens. Serene location. Awesome staff members from check in, to restaurant. Amazing treatments at Temenos
- Suzette (9/5): Magical Place x - Lulu was the absolute highlight . Gardens amazing and overall a very special place x
- Theunis (7/5): Good -
- James (9/5): Superb -
- Ursula (7/5): Have stayed at Temenos many times…. And will continue to book there as it is a very special place …. - The setting is very special…beautiful gardens and very friendly staff…. The breakfasts are outstanding. It’s winter and it’s very cold in McGregor at night…. There is a fireplace and complimentary wood …. Sadly one gets totally smoked out and heat just zooms out of the chimney…..not very eco friendly….
And effective at all!
- Chrizel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roux (10/5): I left feeling rested, calm, uplifted. Hope to return soon. - A most beautiful escape from everyday life. The gardens are magnificent, inviting tranquility and contemplation. The accomodation is serene, with everything one needs, including real coffee and books to read while sitting at the open fireplace. Breakfast was delicious!
- Mally (10/5): A very pleasant experience. Friendly staff, beautiful garden and good value for money. - Good value. Exceeded my expectations. The wifi password should have been explained better when we checked in. Used up most of my airtime before I found the correct password! Not a train smash though.
- Karen (6/5): Good location, friendly staff, clean rooms but freezing cold. No matches to light the fire and bathroom basin overflowed - Location Rooms very cold, bathroom basin flooded, mattress very hard
- Janine (9/5): Always calm, peaceful and restoring - Gorgeous private cottage - Carmel
Ample firewood supplied - Grant was very helpful
Tranquil safe gardens
Peace and quiet Pity but understandable that over the years (I have been visiting since for over 20 years) that some of the facilities are run down - severe leaking in The Well during heavy rains
- Michael (7/5): Good - The location and setting is beautiful Cottages are a bit dated for the cost.
- Adri (9/5): Fantastic and would love to return some time in the future - No breakfast
- Karlie (10/5): Exceptional - The gardens and meditation spaces are absolutely gorgeous. It is also great to have a restaurant on the premises. We had a fireplace in our room and firewood and firelighters were provided. An electric blanket ensured an even cozier night!
- Hazel (5/5): worse than mediocre! - The property itself is lovely, just as it was when I last visited - about 15 years ago. However, our cottage was quite worn looking and definitely had seen better days. The kitchenette was quite dilapidated, with the cupboards needing fresh paint ( or, even better, new wood!). Of more concern was the bathroom: the shower hangs on a pole at one end of the tub. when turned on, the water just falls flat agains the back wall, making it necessary to remove the shower and spray oneself by hand. The tub is deep and slippery, and could be dangerous for older people or children.
We discovered upon arrival that there was no wifi. That’s OK, but the information should be made available on the website. The service was really terrible!
when we arrived we were given our key and told where to find our room. from then on, no one checked to see whether we were comfortable etc.
No one cleaned our room at all during the 3 1/2 days we were there! When we returned from being out on our first day, no one had cleaned the room. When we made enquires we were told that the rooms were only cleaned every 3rd day. On the 3rd day, no one cleaned our room. When we (finally) found a staff member to tell them, they were in a conversation with another staff member and simply ignored us. They appeared utterly disinterested
in the situation.
In all honesty, our stay was a very disappointing experience. I definitely would not return.
- Ernest (4/5): Smelly damp cold hut missing standard luxury. - it’s in McGregor. you can’t go wrong. you’d think… it’s really hard for me to be negative about a stay in South Africa. it’s country no.1 when it comes to locations and hospitality. But this place was a different story. although, it’s my experience, I do have plenty of reference. Where to start?
on arrival we were hardly greeted and got a paper booklet stuffed in our hands with a brief explanation where to go. it’s fine, we are self supporting. On entry the smell of the fireplace was a tat overwhelming. the wood lying around it was all blacked but hadn’t burned. obviously it gave a freshly burned smell as if your local forest just had a good burn and the wind is in your direction. since I slept next to it, you can’t escape it.
sleeping went allright as long as you use the anti. mosquito repellent in overdose. Drinking it would pry have worked best. Obviously I did not but spraying it didn’t cut it. So, tried the net over the bed. Its a one person net, meaning with two people, I share my bed mostly with my wife, it either went into your face or opened up once you turn. useless since the mosquitoes had a great time looking at me struggling to keep them at bay. Next solution was using the fan. it’s a cool cottage so the temperature is not very high. Which is nice. But now with the fan (mosquitoes don’t like wind) the cool breeze soon became an icy wind. The system worked! My wife now woke up telling me she’s cold. So, out come the blankets. And on came the heater. There’s a great thing happening in MacGregor, the town does not suffer from loadshedding. it’s what we knew and made us happy having worked in Capetown for 4 weeks. Our luck ran out at exactly 6:00 am. electricity was cut off… we found out later it was planned for maintenance. Our check inn lady simply didn’t bother to mention it. it’s 6 am and I was now fully exposed to bites and cold. I had a new plan to solve everything at once: Let’s burn the blackened logs to get warm. and get rid of the smell at the same time.
