Guest Reviews
Repas bon
Hôte sympathique
Vu couché de soleil incroyable
- Neil (8/5): Once in a lifetime experience - The overall communication prior to the visit was very good with Etlin who organised the airport pickup, ferry and boat transfer, everything went perfectly. Also communication was very good with Anes who helped prepare the diving equipment. Danny was a great diving guide and took care of the safety aspects whilst diving, and showed us the best dive spots and where to find the best fish. The boat crew also did a great job preparing the equipment for each day and for helping on the boat to get in and out of the water. We saw many turtles, reef sharks, schools of sweet lips and much more. It was overall a great experience, the highlight probably being hooked to the reef at Cape Kri watching the turtles and sharks, plus all the other fishes go by, and then when releasing the hook, being blow away by the current, absolutely amazing!
The homestay food was plentiful and enough for all guests. The places where we took a break between dives were remote islands or sandbanks you could only dream of. Food and drinks were also provided during the breaks so we always had enough energy for the dives.
Herman was a fantastic host taking care of any special needs and also took credit cards for payment, which was a bonus. Wifi could be better, but I had an eSIM with Telekomsel so that was enough anyway. Make sure you use Telekomsel for mobile data as this seems to be the best network for Kri.
- Hugo (4/5): - We spent several days at Herman’s place and were let down by the quality of the food, which even made me sick. The portions were far from sufficient, and communication with the village was practically non-existent.
That said, Herman is accommodating when you ask for something. However, in my opinion, the price is a bit high considering the overall quality of the services provided.
Man hatte alles was man brauchte, man bekommt das was man bezahlt.
- Johannes (9/5): Here you enjoy your holidays - It is a very nice family running this homestay. Mr Herman takes care! I also enjoyed the diving. No comments
- Darcy (5/5): Cheap accom, expensive scuba dives and not much sleep. - Location beautiful, just like every other water bungalow in Raja. Carlos the dive instructor-nice guy, comes alive in the water. Loud Generators running all night for no reason. Air compressor in middle of stay running for long periods of time. Food started out very average, had to ask for breakfast. Bed is a foam mattress that you might as well be sleeping on the floor.
Booking.com description of ammenities not accurate at all.
- Lapo (9/5): -
- Salvador (9/5): Beautiful location, lovely people, simple living, unimaginable coral reefs - Ocean front bungalow was in the most beautiful location. You can snorkel out to the coral reefs from your hut. You are left to your own devices, including at meal times as the family are busy doing there thing. Meals were basic but delicious and filling. You can watch baby sharks swimming around the base of your bungalow at night! It's amazing. Herman was great, helping us organise our trips to and from different reefs for a decent price. IT'S EXTREMELY BASIC, electricity 6 hours a day, no shops. But we love it like that, a real disconnect. Communication at the beginning of the trip. We arrived in Waisai thinking Herman had taken the same ferry as us but after waiting for over an hour he told us he was still in Sorong. We asked around and eventually were directed to Herman's brother, who we didn't know existed at the time so were skeptical. We thought it was dodgy, but it wasn't at all, just a bit of poor communication for good reason (immediate family loss), Otherwise, they were great.
- Hugo (8/5): -
- Anthea (1/5): Animal Cruelty - Do not stay here - We stayed on one of the ocean view homestays. The homestay itself was nice - like any other homestay on other islands - bed on the floor with mosquito net, and a hammock and sunbed on the terrace which were nice. The views of the ocean were lovely. On arrival, the owner said hello, then left for Waisai, and never came back so we couldn't communicate with his family. The reason we gave a poor review is because they had a large cockatoo (appears to be a critically endangered Yellow Crested Cockatoo) tied to a post with a metal wire <10cm long wrapped around its foot. The bird was often seen hanging upside down from the wire pecking at it. The bird was clearly distressed, squawking ALL DAY long. The bird tried to fly several time but was unable to because it was being held captive. The squawking was so distressing to us that we left after one night. We did not want to support or participate in this homestays activities as a direct result of this.
We met another couple also leaving for Waisai the same day - they had already paid 800kRp for a longboat. We agreed to boat share to Waisai with them, and pay them the other half of their transfer. When the boat was ready to leave, we were told by the homestay to have lunch first while they packed our things onto the boat. They packed our things onto a bigger boat, not the longboat we had paid for. The staff came to us and said we now owed them another 600kRp because they had to take a larger boat because there was now 4 of us. This didn't make any sense as boat sharing on a longboat is extremely common in Raja Ampat and there was no need for the bigger boat. They then started taking the boat out into the ocean with all of our stuff on it and told us we had to pay them the extra money. We paid because we just wanted to get away from this homestay. They clearly had to take the boat to Waisai for another reason (there was a broken boat motor sitting in the middle of the boat) and used us as an excuse to pay more. On the way there, the boat engines stopped working causing delays getting to Waisai
This homestay is also not registered with StayRajaAmpat.com which has all the homestays on it.
- Anisha (10/5): At Daroyen Homestay you feel Home - We stayed 7 nights here in Daroyen and enjoyed every day so much. We spent time snorkelling, exploring and time with Herman and his family.
The food was delicious and on point. Every day there is different breakfast, lunch and dinner. Veggies, rice or noodles, fish or meat and tempeh or tofu. Plenty of food so we never were hungry. There is coffee and tea available all the time and of course normal water to drink.
The place here is maintained, clean and tidy. If you have questions or need anything, Herman will always help as good as possible.
The bungalows are spacious and clean. They have a nice view, outside Terrasse with seating area, table and hammock. In high tide you can carefully jump in the water as it is deep enough. At low tide the bungalows are right on the beach.
You can either start your snorkel adventure right from Daroyen or walk a little bit up or down the beach and drift back to Daroyen and enjoy the equatic life. It is the best snorkel spot we found so far in all our travels.
We saw 1000‘s of fishes, black tip sharks, turtles, crocodile fish, zebra shark, moray eel, nudibranches and so much more.
Herman showed us a beautiful spotted Cuscus, which is a marsupial, endemic to Raja Ampat and helped finding coconut crabs which we really enjoyed.
It’s our favourite homestay in Raja Ampat as it is so relaxed and on the water. 10/10 and we will come back.
Thank you Herman and your family. You are great, see you soon.
Justus and Anisha. German/English
Ps. You have the perfect sunset and sunrise view. We loved it!
- Viviana (7/5): Good -
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional - Such a beautiful location with everything you need. The food was delicious and the family hosts are so kind and helpful. It is a simple homestay, bucket shower for example, but we really enjoyed the relaxing vibe there.
- Elien (10/5): Amazing - Beautiful location.
Everybody is so kind and helpful.
I really enjoyed my stay here.
The view is breathtaking 😍
I stayed for a week and was sad when I had to leave.
I enjoyed the dives with divemaster Abang.
The food was delicious.
Bucket showers and back to basics, I really loved the entire experience so much!
Thank you Herman, Nani, Abang and the rest of the staff for such an amazing stay on Kri Iskand! 🙏🥰
- Edwin (7/5): third best of three places i stayed on kri, but acceptable, and huts over the water so chill! - ocean view room - on stilts above water, ,hammock, lounge chair, sunset view
huts farther apart than other locations
minimal mosquitos, rats
owner present and checks in daily, speaks english
takes credit card for extra boat bookings
house reef good - fish best on that side of island
dive boat twin engine - offering dives and snorkeling wherever you want to go for average prices
food tasty and varied - no complaints but not the best on the island drama when other guest booking not as expected, due to wording in ad - they have 4 huts - two on stilts over the ocean are described as "ocean view" - everyone wants those...two on shore are listed as "beach front" but they are not - they face into the courtyard and the dining area, not what you signed up for
average toilet onshore with bucket flush; bathroom is a bucket of water with a bucket dip
had to find them sometimes to get toilet paper, spoons, hot water, soap...the little things that separate average from good
mattress on floor
had to steal fan from another room
noisy dive tank compressor near room
noisy generator next door
food average - breakfast only sweets, lunch and dinner rice with two other offerings - fish or chicken or tofu and vegetable
food just enough - always rice left over but everything else finished
- Adele (2/5): Extremely disappointing - The location looks beautiful when you are in the water. Staff communicated well on what’sapp beforehand. If we were in the overwater room we paid for with the hammock and balcony it would have been fine however they put us in an awful room surrounded by a termite mound less than a meter from the kitchen and generator. It was extremely hot and awkward. No privacy as men in next door property could see directly into my windows. Food very very basic. Dogs fighting immediately outside extremely loudly. Communication with staff appalling. They left us stranded all day knowing we needed to move location and disappeared entirely until 1pm. We needed to leave at 8am and it ruined our plans to return to bali entirely. The tiny beach disappears in high tide and you are stuck. Do not stay unless you are guaranteed the room in the image.
- Madeline (8/5): Great location, great food - We spent 6 nights with Herman and his family at Daroyen village, and loved every moment of it. The location is stunning, bungalows over the water are basic but incredible, food delicious, and his family are lovely although very quiet and keep to themselves a lot. Herman was always making sure we were enjoying our time and was helpful meeting us in Waisai, and helping to buy the boat ticket back to Sorong.
Etlin was amazing too, meeting us in Sorong at both ends of our trip and making sure we got to our hotel.
We did 4 dives with Herman and Peter (dive guide) and felt safe with Peter as our guide. The dive equipment was a bit old and we were hesitant at first, but being comfortable in the water and with diving, we were so glad we went because the diving is insanely good. If you’re new to diving or not confident in assessing equipment/risks, I would suggest diving elsewhere. Amazing snorkelling right out in front on the drop off, and plenty of fish life around the nearby jetty’s. Old dive equipment and not up to safety standard. If you're new to diving I would recommend diving elsewhere.
- Emmanuelle (9/5): Amazing! - the place is heavenly and the welcome warm
Ideal stay for a change of scenery
Herman was welcoming and attentive to its customers fruits missed at breakfast and more fish to eat at meal but everything was good
- Henk (8/5): It was amazing! Stay was perfect and the nature was super! -
- Juju (8/5): Fantastic Homestay - Awesome family atmosphere. Out of the 54 countries that I've been to, the lunch dish made by the ladies was one of the best I've ever had. It made staying there even more worth it. Humble staff with 25 diving and snorkeling options. I highly recommend Cape Kri and Yenbuba Village which weren't far from the homestay. Add a fan and mosquito repellent making it a 10/10 stay :)
- Jan (10/5): Definitely recommend - It was a very pleasant stay. The family was very friendly. The hut over the water was big and comfortable and from the terasse we could watch sunset and the fish in the water. The Wi-Fi was one of the best we had in Raja Ampat. The food was delicious and with variation, despite the isolation of the island. Herman was very helpful with planning of the snorkelling and diving trips.
- Christine (3/5): Poor - The overwater bungallow and the view from Terrace. Same as my previous review
- Christine (3/5): Poor - The over water bungalow was very nice. The distance between each bungalows is bigger than other bungalows in Kri. You can enjoy sunset from the terrace. You can also spot baby sharks from the terrace. We are an Eurasian couple (I am Indonesian), and we stayed for 10 days at Daroyen. Unfortunately, there were always issues with food from the very beginning. Before we arrived, I told Etlin that we are not vegetarian and we'd like to eat seafood.
One day after I finished my diving at 3 PM, I could not eat my lunch because it was eaten by the family member.
Once after diving, we were fed with just plain rice and spinach. Herman said that it was difficult to get fish and they could not give us proper food because they had not received the money from booking.com. This reason is not acceptable because there are many fishermen in Raja Ampat, and we have paid everything in advance. As we were starving, we had to eat in another place as we were starving. I double-checked with booking.com about the payment issues, and booking confirmed that they worked with Daroyen to fix it. Unfortunately, it seems like Herman wasn't happy about it, and he asked me to explain while he recorded me using his phone without my consent. This is not acceptable, and I asked him to delete it.
After we complained about that we need proteins and nutrisious food because we dive everyday, we indeed were served with big fishes for 2 dinners but unfortunately the amount of fishes were decreasing everyday until the end of our stay.
I chose this place because it is run by locals and has very good reviews. It was a surprised to me that as an Indonesian, I don't feel they treated me the same as foreign customers.
The bathroom was stink, and so did the blanket. There was no fresh water for shower and for rinsing our diving equipment (regulators, bcds, mask etc). I had to ask fresh water to clean our diving equipments and most of the time, either they dont have it or they gave us only half a bucket of fresh water. I am under the impression that every time I ask them about something (toilet papper, hot water, chilli sauce), it is like I am bothering them.
- Reisekreise (10/5): Love it - Best Value for money during our 3 weeks stay in Raja
- Mike (10/5): Great time 🐠🐡😎🙏🏼 - Basic and beautiful Homestay. The Family is lovely and make good Food. There is everything available transport, diving and snorkeling, incl equipment.
Thank you for this adventure Hermann 🙏🏼❤️😇
- Raquel (8/5): A Real & Lovely HomeStay Experience - Herman helped me to arrange my scuba diving with a very good local guide (Chris) and I was able to dive a lot which was great as diving sites are some of the best in Papua around Kri island. The location is idyllic and food is very fresh and prepared with care. Herman also helped me with the transport there and back to Wasai. Lovely and peaceful place to stay. A Real HomeStay experience. I would prefer warm yellow light in the dinning area to relax at night while using the wifi (instead of the bright white light, not great for sensitive eyes)
- Julius (8/5): For real travellers. If you want some real feel of the island, this is a place to be. -
- Markéta (10/5): Exceptional - Herman and his family are wonderful people. They took care of us like we were their family. The lady cooked for us and her pancakes were famous. Everything we wanted to see, Herman took us there. We felt safe with them.
- Michelle (10/5): Relaxed homestay with local touch - Stayed with Herman and his family for 6 days. I can highly recommend if you want to experience local Papuan culture. Herman helps organize all transfers from Sorong with is nice. Food is perfect for vegetarians as well. Standards are of course different from a 5* hotel in Europe, but in case you want to support a local family and have a lot of quiet time to dive, snorkel and enjoy the sea - that’s the place to be. Also regarding diving - I did 5 dives to various dive sites around Kri with the dive master Karlos. He was professional and helped me a lot given it has been quite some time after my PADI open water. I felt safe. Thus in case you come as a tourist and want to support local families, try out their diving - wet suits might not be the newest as in other newly opened dive sites, but you will benefit from more flexibility in terms of what time to go diving, which spots to go to and from 1-2 people per dive master. -
- Lena (8/5): Very good - Good english communication with the host, great place for snorkeling, Sunset from the bungalow, hammock, sun lounger, french fries for dinner (which is very rare for raja ampat) Unfortunately no coffee and no blanket (but wasn't really needed)
