Guest Reviews
- Helen Yun Jin (9/5): True Japanese hospitality! - True Japanese hospitality! The hosts are polite, attentive, and provide excellent service with daily room cleaning, fresh yukatas, and hot/cold water thermoses. The historic property is well kept and very clean, especially the warm shared bathrooms. It is located in a quiet, safe area that is just a 9-minute walk to Takaoka Station and 3 minutes to Lawson. The breakfast is delicious and highly affordable. Plus, laundry and drying is only JPY 100! Highly recommended. non
- Thanapon (10/5): -
- Romuald (10/5): - The hosts were extremely kind and helpful, the hotel was well located and perfectly clean. The breakfast was incredibly good, and I would like to stress once again how kind the hosts were to us. This was my second time in Takaoka but the first time at this place - I will book here again if I visit a third time for sure!
- Tom Robin Lee (10/5): - The owners were super helpful, supportive and caring. The onsen was an amazing way to relax after a long day. Basically almost in the city everything was reachable by food. The breakfast in the morning was amazing and varied for each day.
- Natalija (10/5): - Amazing ryokan with lovely hosts, we loved our stay and would definitely recommend!
- Angus (10/5): - This hotel is ran by the most beautiful couple, it makes you feel right at home. The facilities are very much worth it for the price. Would definitely recommend staying here if you have the chance!
- ziosi (10/5): Un vero Roykan ! - Tutto
- lawrence (8/5): -
- Sara Anne (9/5): - The owner were kind and very focused on hospitality. The ryokan is old but authentic, you do feel more emerged in Japanese culture. I didn't try the food because I was out a lot. The big Buddha statue is just outside the door, plus the park, old house district and a few cafes.
- Konekochan (5/5): -
- Quinten (10/5): - Spacious tatami room, Nice and clean bath, very friendly owners. Right next to the great Buddha of takaoka. It wasn't an issue for me but they do have an 11pm curfew. You can't leave or enter after this time.
- Chun (10/5): It was a wonderful stay, close enough to be able to walk from the train station. - The food, although modest, was excellently prepared. The room was the best in the house, overlooking the fish pond. The staff service was exceptional, but never bothersome. All in all, a very pleasant place to stay. Nothing, the Ryokan met our every needs for the short stay. I wish we could have stayed longer.
- Natalie (4/5): Meal forgotten, so write to remind them - Our pre-paid dinner meal was forgotten and they could not provide anything. They apologised, but the money back barely covered two bowls of ramen and a drink at a ramen shop by the station. We had been so looking forward to this - our only ryokan dinner - so was disappointing. The rest of the ryokan is (cold and old but) nice.
- Patumwan (10/5): Breakfast and dinner were delicious and the service was excellent. Good location. - Daibutsu Ryokan
Stay at a ryokan with an onsen, breakfast, and Japanese-style dinner. It's clean, comfortable, and family-friendly, located near the most beautiful bronze Buddha statue in Japan.
- Michelle (10/5): - I booked this ryokan because most hotels in Toyama were fully booked. It’s just a short ride from Takaoka and a pleasant walk to reach — a nice warm-up for the hiking season.
I’ve stayed in many ryokans before, but this one truly stands out for its excellent value for money, spacious in a tatami mat, clean, and the best Japanese breakfast set we’ve ever had. The hospitality is absolutely exceptional — a perfect 100,000!
We also run a hotel in our own country, and being served with such warmth and care here is a real inspiration to us.
If you want to experience staying in a 90-year-old ryokan and get a glimpse of traditional Japanese life, book Daibutsu Ryokan — you won’t regret it nothing.
- Dinesh Kumar (10/5): -
- Matsubara (10/5): -
- Marco (10/5): - Ryokan tradizionale molto bello e pulito! Nulla
- Huan (9/5): Very good experience. - Everything. Corridor is a little bit hot.
- Huan (9/5): Great experience. - Staff are super nice.
Location is perfect for our trips to Himi seafood market canteen.
We love the colorful fish in the pool next to our balcony. No AC in the corridor.
Cena abbondante e tipica.
Staff molto cortese.
- Romain (10/5): - The place was really calm. In the morning the breakfast was served at time. It was tasty.
The room was spacious and really comfy.
The place was neat and tidy.
Thanks for all you are a great host
- Shinichi (9/5): -
- Stephane (10/5): A wonderful ryokan experience for the entire family - The hosts were absolutely wonderful! A warm welcome and introduction to the ryokan, to a hearty breakfast and a warm goodbye as we left, they really made us feel welcomed.
- Simona (9/5): -
- Joanna (10/5): A wonderful traditional Japanese Ryokan. - Traditional Japanese Ryokan.
Polite and extremely helpful staff.
Amazing breakfast.
Beautiful bedroom. Nothing!
- Sauter (10/5): -
- Romain (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tasayu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Grant (10/5): Great place which we both enjoyed our stay, we thoroughly recommend this traditional accomodation. - Traditional accommodation with an interesting history. Great food for both dinner and breakfast. Relaxing and clean bathing facilities. Great hosts who were very welcoming to foreign guests. We can thoroughly recommend staying in this great Ryokan Some more choices of alcoholic beverages to have during our dinner would have been nice.
- Ling (10/5): I appreciate this experience, I'm glad I could do it on a budget! - It was extra work for the staff, but they made me vegetarian meals and I enjoyed every bite, thank you! The hotel is dated, but the staff kept the place neat and clean. A lot of attention went into their work, it's a wonderful place to experience the Japanese ryokan.
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- Jeff (10/5): Fantastic Traditional Japanese accommodation - The property was a beautiful old traditional Japanese Ryokan. The hosts were amazingly friendly & very hospitality. We had 3 breakfasts there & they were all different but all very delicious. Rooms were very clean & comfortable & the place was in a great location. If you are looking for a traditional Japanese feel I would highly recommend this place. Nothing, I couldn’t fault the place
- Nurul (10/5): Exceptional - Best hospitality from the host. Will repeat here again whenever i come back to Toyama. Nothing
- Marta (10/5): Wonderful experience. - Very hospitable, kind and discreet hosts. Very comfortable and spacious facilities. Delicious meals prepared with care. Wonderful experience. Dōmo arigatō gozaimasu.
This is a traditional ryokan, so take it into consideration while booking (calm, curfew, shared bathrooms).
- Brandee (6/5): Hosts were very friendly but smoking was permitted on premises so it made our stay uncomfortable - Good location Smoking was permitted. Hallways were very dark.
- Tron (10/5): Exceptional - Very kind people running the ryokan. I accidently left an umbrella that I borrowed from them at the nearby store, and the lady said don't worry about it and that she'll get it. It was very genuine. Was only a few other people staying at the time I was there, so it was very quiet. And the bathhouse was a very relaxing and unique experience. Many amenities are surprisingly provided as well, and as soon as I checked in the gentleman provided me hot tea. Was very good value for the money... I just wish there was more to do in Takaoka, but there's some decent day trips you can take from there. Would without a doubt stay there again if I went to Takaoka. Absolutely nothing!
- Chieh (10/5): The host is very warm and welcome. The meal is excellent and location is great. - Excellent Nil
- Nikolay (9/5): Superb - Very nice staff, the rooms were clean and tidy. I've been the only person who used the shared bathroom, so it was pretty convenient. Might be a bit tiny if there will be more people in the bathroom, but overall no complains.
- Echo (10/5): Like the name suggested, the ryokan’s owners have a heart of Buddha and treat each 旅人 with kindness - Staff are both very kind, food is delicious! We slept very well:)
- Jesse (9/5): Quiet & relaxing ryokan within walking distance to the rail terminal. - The hosts were very friendly and helpful, the venue was private yet close to the bus & rail terminals. Great food as well, if you opt for the home-cooked meals. The attentiveness of the hosts took some getting used to.
- Yasuyo (10/5): We highly recommend this place! - This place has so much charm. Good food and good service
- Daniel (9/5): Great Takaoka Travel Bargain! - I loved this place! The best travel bargain of my trip to Japan. I received a lot: big room, 2 great meals, for what I paid. It was not expensive and a I got an excellent Japanese Ryokan experience for not a lot of money (under $ 100 Candian). I don't think I could get this a good of value on a hotel room back home. My room had some interesting artwork and a little koi pond outside. The food was very good. It is very close to the big Buddha and also the city park which has a nice shrine, kind of creepy statue park and crows crows oh so many crows. If I come to Takaoka city again, I will very likely come back to this ryokan again. It is kind of worn, dented, dinged but that is just because this wonderful hotel has probably been around for a number of years. You don't have a bathroom in your room so you'll have to go down the hall.
- Teng (10/5): Stay here if you visit Takaoka to experience traditional hospitality of Japanese ryokan - A ryokan which still upholds the tradition of Japanese hospitality. Even I booked only a single room, I was surprised to find my tatami room so spacious with balcony opens to a beautiful koi pond. I was treated with a famous local biscuit as welcome gift. The breakfast was the tastiest and most eye-pleasing meal I had in my entire 2 weeks-trip. The clam soup was so fresh. The host helped to call the previous hotel I stayed because I left my adaptor & mobile charger there. He was kind to also let me use his charger that night. The room was warm in chilly autumn night and I had a good sleep after soaking in hot bath. It was rainy when I arrived and left the ryokan but because of the hospitality I received, I wished I could have stayed there for another night or 2.
- Thomas (9/5): Superb - Authentic Ryokan in a convenient location. Very attentive and lovely owners who were always available to help and even drove us to the station because it was raining.
Also the most beautiful selection of Koi fish we have seen so far.
- Florence (9/5): Nice place to stay for a few days and to visit the area around Takaoka - Nice Japanese breakfast. Traditional tatami room. The owners were nice. View on the pond. Close to the station. Nothing
- Maximilian (8/5): Very good -
- Yannik (10/5): Very traditional beautiful Ryokan - Beautiful little Ryokan with japanese breakfast, big rooms and small onsen. Hiking to Himi was a great experience. It's very traditional, not saying that's a bad thing, just, be prepared for that.
- Squashy (10/5): Exceptional - The place truly felt like an authentic Japanese traditional inn experience with an excellent host taking care of us. We felt very welcomed, and the meals prepared were exceptional. The shared bathroom was clean and well-kept, and the WiFi was exceptionally fast at 150 Mbps.
- Reynoso (8/5): Enjoyed our stay. - Kind staff, perfectly clean rooms
- Markéta (8/5): Very good - Traditional ryokan experience with tatami rooms and onsen.
The hosts do not speak English so it was quite interesting to speak using mobile translators (but everything was OK ;)). The woman was really nice and warmcharming.
We had really nice and big room with view to garden with small pond and fish.
Onsen - bath - was also a great experience and there was noone! Just relax and calm.
The location was also good - close to Takaoka station. We could not order breakfast and dinner. Due to the language barrier we understood that was too late for it (I understand it could be late for dinner but we did not know why was the problem with ordering breakfast) so we were quite disappointed about it (we were looking forward to it after reading of reviews here!) and we had to go out (in the rain, on Sunday evening) and we only found one store open to buy food, not so closed to accomodation).
- Kristin (9/5): Great spot to stay in Takaoka with friendly hosts - Great location in Takaoka. Very friendly hosts! Everything was as expected and we had a comfortable stay.
- Chua (9/5): Superb -
- Rachel (10/5): A great stay in a traditional Japanese guest house. dinner and breakfast were fantastic. - A great stay in a traditional Japanese guest house. The dinner and breakfast were fantastic - a wonderful experience for our kids too.
- Chichih (8/5): comfortable, warm stay in a peaceful environment. Recommand. - The meals are fantastic, out of my imagination. Quantity is ok, you don't worry about you are not full and eat something else. Since bathroom and restroom are shared, if you would like to go to restroom at late night. You have to wear more clothes because no any heat in the alley to the restroom. Also on the way to restroom is dark, you have to bring cell phone to turn on the light. of Couse, if you are scared of dark, bring someone to go with you.
- Wesley (10/5): Must-have experience when visiting to Japan - I love how the owner in the ryokan has a very warm and welcoming demeanour. Most importantly, the Japanese traditional ryokan experience is beautifully well-preserved. Truly a must-have experience in a lifetime! The toilet didn’t really have a pleasant smell
- Tszhim (10/5): I must come back!!!! This is a trip of “learning how to be alone “ , I’m glad that is a wonderful start . Awesome!!!!! - Room
staff so nice and sweet
Location is good NA
All is perfect
- Anderson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dia (7/5): Nice old ryokan - The room was spacious, the futonbeds were comfortable. The building is very nice but quite old and this gives a unique charm. The hosts were extremely helpful. The toilet smelled extremely bad. I know this is an old building but please do something with that for the sake of the guests. Also there is only 1 toilet on each floor, so we had to go around the whole building if we have to use it. But at least we didn't smell it. The whole building needs a deep cleaning. The rooms were very clean, but the sinks and mirrors in the hallway were a bit dirty and there weren't enough light to use the mirror. Also there are cobwebs and thick dust in every corner in the halls. Also a dark courtain would be nice in the room, in case someone doesn't want to wake up to the first lights.
- Callum (10/5): Exceptional - In a small city it’s close to the train station and local tourist spots. The hosts were very welcoming and kind and did their very best to make our stay comfortable. If you’re looking for authentic Japanese hospitality, look no further.
- Ravi (10/5): Excellent - Near to major attractions. Owners really good people and treat you as a family. After a long day, homemade Japanese dinner served in the room was A++ quality and in good quantity too. Variety of seafood dishes. On top of that, next day the Japanese breakfast served was even better and unexpected with hot oyster soup, fried salmon, boiled veggies too good, fruits, tea, etc. All in all best home stay i did till date and would come back again in future.
- Linda (10/5): we highly recommend and a big thank you to our hosts - charming Ryokan with very helpful and welcoming hosts. the room was super clean and vast with a view on a pond. all the facilities allowed us to have a great stay. the Japanese breakfast was tasty and healthy. nothing
- Rick (9/5): Traditional ryokan experience of tatami rooms & sleeping on the floor - Japanese breakfast was really good. Also enjoyed the old-style ryokan experience of tatami room & futons. (yes, means you walk down the hall for toilet and wash basins). the bath (ofuro) closes at 10:30, such that if you come back at curfew (11 pm) [no complaints about curfew itself] the bath is already closed. Would be nice if the bath was open later.
- Helen (8/5): Authentic Japanese Ryokan hospitality. - Comfortable genuine Japanese ryokan inn close to the Daibutsu Giant Buddha and on the city heritage trail. Quiet old world charm. Lovely gracious owner and family who were very attentive. Large traditional room with Koi carp pond outside the window. Very clean shared WC and Onsen facilities. Japanese breakfast served in private dining room was very carefully prepared. The kind owner accommodated our need to leave very early on last day. Nothing
- Natasha (10/5): A beautiful experience at this lovely family-run ryokan, with rooms overlooking the koi pond - The couple that own the place were very kind. We had a beautiful room with a view of the koi pond. We were greeted with absolutely delicious cookies and tea. The onsen was simple, but met our needs. All and all it was a really lovely stay.
- Pratik (10/5): Exceptional - The behavior of owner is amazing. Very humble people. Best decision to stay in Takaoka
- Oliver (9/5): Superb -
- Yachun (9/5): There is a Japanese style garden beside our room. We can see the garden from the room window. - Service is the best. The house keeper helped us with our luggage, prepared indoor sandals for us, put our outdoor shoes into the shoe shelf, the bathroom (on-shen) was prefilled with hot water, bath agent was added and the water temperature was great! Besides, there was tea kit (teapot, teacup and sencha tea leaves) There is no electric kettle in the room. You can ask for hot water from the house keeper.
- Nabila (5/5): Passable -
- Tsao (8/5): Very good - The breakfast is really good . The hotel is kind of old .
- Carol (10/5): A superb place to stay! - The staff is exceptional, helpful and considerate! This is a wonderful ryokan for a perfect Japanese experience. The rooms are comfortable and the food delicious. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it. It was all excellent!
- Joe (8/5): Very good - The hotel is located well and very close to the Buddha. The host is very nice and friendly. They help me to put the large luggage in the room. Similar to traditional Japanese inn, a hot tub is equipped in the bath room for your relaxation after shower. The dinner and breakfast from the inn contains various in-season seafood which is very delicious and large size. Recommend to stay there to experience their hospitality if you visit in Takaoka. Basically feel contented in the inn. But my room is little far away from the restroom and I need to pass a corridor. It feels a bit cold in the evening when leaving the room to pass the corridor to the restroom~~~
