Guest Reviews
- dawson (8/5): - Comfortable, cute, clean, convenient, good continental breakfast. It was a typical 1920's/30's villa converted to b&b. A little drafty and not very soundproof, but nevertheless good value. The heating system perhaps could be upgraded with a modern heat pump rather than the provided oil heater, ...but all minor issues.
- Ross (9/5): - Loved the extras - light turned on when we were out and came back from outing at night and the heater turned on. It was much appreciated on a cold night - and the finishing touch of a chocolate each. Thankyou Anna and Malcom

- Jason (8/5): Comfortable, quiet, and quaint cottage. Would happily stay again. - Quiet street. Good breakfast selection. Lovely garden. Nice big bathroom with level entry shower. It'd be picky to say anything.

- Heidi (10/5): A sweet, comfortable cottage, located so well we'll be recommending to friends. - Breakfasts were great. Location was excellent for us. Cllose to friends. Accessible by bike.
- Wren (9/5): Handy to town, nice and quiet, helpful host, and we'd be happy to re-visit. - Breakfast supplies were fine. The bedroom is rather 'squashed', but still very cute.
- Gerard (7/5): Very comfortable - Location Old but fine. Not modern.
- Caroline (10/5): Super convenient, everything you need. - It was a super convenient place to stay. Very cozy, lots of cool finishing touches like the breakfast, tea, coffee etc. They even put the heater on before I arrived. It was simple but perfect. Friendly owners, great communicators.

- karen (9/5): Good for price and for a short stay - It’s vintage and good location A bit too dark and bedroom is small
- Andrew (8/5): Perfect overnighter - Cute, country-style cottage. Lots of attention to detail. Friendly & helpful host. Comfortable bed, excellent breakfast provisions. Living room seats were a little low and hard.

That's all most of it ok
- Asko (9/5): -
- Ian (10/5): Enjoyable, relaxing and a surprisingly well put together environment, in a pleasant garden setting. - Location-Excellent, Breakfast-Excellent, very comfortable, spacious and tastefully furnished.
- Cary (8/5): Overall a great stay - Great kitchen, bathroom and lounge. Breakfast was a bonus 😊 Bedroom was very small/tight and would be more comfortable in hot evenings if it had a heat pump / aircon
- David (9/5): - Cottage set in beautiful garden. Very good breakfast. Very good location.
Comfortable bed.
Nice having a veranda to relax on Found the sofas too low
- Jacqueline (9/5): - Lovely cottage, clean, well equipped - a truly lovely experience. My problem was that it was very impersonal. We never met our host, not even just to say hello. This led to us feeling that we were not really welcome but just useful to fill the booking. Maybe this is a culturel thing, I don't know, but it seems a shame that hosts do not seem interested in their guests. This comment does not only address this host but it is something we have noticed in using b&bs in NZ.
- Greg (9/5): Perfect and charming stay in convenient location. - Great comfortable and spacious cottage with a beautiful garden, within walking distance to Havelock North.
Nice self catered breakfast, lacked for nothing.
Good value for money.
Would stay again, highly recommend. Not a thing.
- Trevor (10/5): Only there for one night but was a relaxing experience for me. - It was a very good price to include breakfast. What a delightful space to relax in. Loved the gardens and the antiquiness of it! Had everything I needed and more!
- Wayne (9/5): -
- Debbie (10/5): Cosy , well catered for.lovely comfortable bed.easy walk to central havelock North - Location , cost and beautiful gardens. I did give 9 months notice to cancel the booking. That was refused. I was disappointed by that but luckily the rest of our wedding party were just around the corner. Couldn’t get the Tele to work we had to stream something from our phone.
- Jenny (8/5): - Lovely setting Not much room to get past the bed
- Melissa (10/5): Beautiful and spacious with a lovely breakfast - Generous breakfast options and gorgeous cottage ambience
- Edmond (10/5): Sfeervol, gastvrij en comfortabel. - Sfeervol, gastvrij en comfortabel. -
- Clair (9/5): - Lovely gardens and gorgeous character full place to stay. We also appreciated the remote no hassle check in.
- Angela (10/5): -
- Richard (8/5): A very pleasant stay. Loved the atmosphere and garden. -
- Valerie (7/5): Garden and location were the highlights; ok spot to spend one night - Gorgeous gardens surrounding the house, very affordable for staying one night, clean accommodation, comfortable bed and linens, nicely decorated bedroom, in a quiet residential neighborhood. One of the hosts, the gentleman, was very friendly and welcoming and gave us some interesting history on the house and tips on tourist attractions (the other host seemed put out by our arrival however and was a bit chastising since we hadn’t seen the check in instructions which we somehow inadvertently missed -that’s our fault yes, but the reaction from her was nonetheless not very welcoming. Perhaps she was just having a bad day). The living room was very dark with fluorescent lighting; the only source of natural light from that room was from the french doors entering from the front porch which necessitated keeping the blinds closed for privacy as it faced a street (had to dress in living room as bedroom was too tiny for luggage/dressing). That’s just the layout of this particular room, for future travellers to take note of. Another room may be more private. We managed as it was just a 1 night stay for us. Furniture was heavy and dark in living room taking up a lot of space ; this area could use some updating, decluttering , reinventing and lightening up. Small breakfast table was inaccessible unless you moved things around (kitchen and living room share same space). Breakfast was uninspiring: such as slices of bread in a ziplock, canned fruit and yoghurt in small bowls covered with saran wrap, milk bottle partly filled with milk and covered with saran (we chose to eat elsewhere).
- Peter (10/5): A down to earth, beautiful place to stay - I'm a frequent business traveller and have stayed in dozens of places in New Zealand over the past few years.
Without doubt, Guthrie Cottage is one of the best places I've stayed at. It beats the five-star hotels, and I have stayed in many of them.
The accommodation is basically half the entire house. Beautiful Victorian-style interior with a separate bedroom, bathroom and kitchen/lounge.
Fantastic! Absolutely recommended Nothing. Guthrie Cottage is a fabulous place. I recommend it and will be back
- Paul (9/5): Very pleasant - Breakfast adequate and location fine Had internet problem but rectified
- Dheshni (7/5): Quick convenient stay - It was cosy character cottage N/A
- Angel (9/5): Lovely place for a 1 night solo stay while travelling for work - Great affordable option in a good location near the center. Regular work traveler and would definitely book again. Lovely breakfast provided and simple check in instructions.
- Karen (9/5): Cosy and welcoming. - Cosy and welcoming. Hosts sent us directions and left heating and lighting on for our arrival each evening. Loved having the big sitting room to lounge and relax.
- Julie (9/5): Relaxing Enjoyable Comfortable - Just great , we were there for such a short time . It was lovely . Only petty , but I love a bigger bed .
- Erin (8/5): Very good value for money!! - Great continental breakfast provided. Nice to have a seperate lounge area and price for the night was so reasonable. Friendly hosts. Bed is only a double bed, and bedding came off easily. It was advertised as a double bed, but you forget how small a double is when you are used to a queen or bigger!
- Ken (8/5): Lovelt comfortable stay - Excellent value, lovely property. Breakfast left in ourcroom meant we could get away early as planned. Light switches location a little unusual and tv remote frusteating.
- Neville (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and a beautiful place
- Yvonne (9/5): Enjoyed our stay. Quiet location. - Fabulous place to stay. Well maintained property. Breakfast supplied was substantial. Bedroom space was a little tight around the bed.
- O'neill (9/5): Lovely warm. - Great breakfast. Extra handrail in shower.
- Tillani (10/5): Great! - Cute cosy cottage. We loved the attention to detail. Malcolm was very friendly and had good advice to make our trip easier.
- Phillipa (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful cottage
Comfortable bed
Warm and cosy
- Howard (9/5): Superb -
- Amilie (9/5): Wonderful sweet bnb to stay at! Ideal location, generous hosts, perfect! - Wonderful hosts, warm rooms and such a beautiful character home. Highly recommend for solo travelers or couples
- Tim (8/5): lovely cosy cottage - the bed was very comfortable and the room was very cosy. nice and handy to the town center with off street parking. lovely established gardens. breakfast was supplied.
- Mark (8/5): Excellent, I would return for sure. - Old world style Understand the bathroom is basically a wet room but maybe shower water could be contained more or drainage improved, as water tends to run out onto rest of floor, also a heated towel rail would be a bonus.
- Andrew (8/5): Very good - Breakfast, uninspiring Shower drained into corner of the bathroom under the sink
- Jennifer (9/5): My choice for accommodation when staying in Havelock North - Great location and the property has everything you need for a short stay
- Omond (8/5): Very good -
- Belinda (8/5): Very good -

- Ben (9/5): Superb -
- Cheryl (9/5): We would stay again. - Good location. Charming cottage. N/A
- Gillian (8/5): Very good - A lovely cosy cottage that is super comfortable
The beakfast left in the room (cereal, toast, yogurt and fruit) was lovely touch Its a 20m minute walk into town through suburbs. Not unpleasant but not a particulary pretty walk
- Kevin (8/5): Comfortable & clean & good value for money. - Old cottage that was clean & tidy. Host Malcolm was very friendly & informative about the area.
- Sharon (9/5): Lovely homely place. Yummy breaky -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional - Very homily and comfortable.
- Gordon (9/5): great thanks - great location,cute place
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional - A very cute cottage B&B. Hosts have thought of everything you need for a comfortable stay at a very reasonable price. We loved it and would definitely book again if in HB.
- Kathryn (9/5): Superb - Loved the old world feel of the cottage & all the nick nacks Maybe the lounge chairs are a little uncomfortable but that is nit picking!
- Liz (10/5): Excellent - Loved how it was in theme and lots of little bits of thoughtfulness. Breakfast was simple but delicious and just what we needed. Gardens amazing and created an ambience of peace and quiet. Central to everything we needed. Bed was a little small to what we were used to however it again fitted the old fashioned theme which was nice. It was not something we didnt like but we did notice that water from the shower got to all parts of the bathroom even with the curtains closed so we had to be mindful not to slip until we could mop it all up.
- Justice (8/5): Very pleasant - Cute cottage with lovely garden.Very comfortable .Enjoyed the continental breakfast.
- Aaron (7/5): Pleasant stay. -
- Brigid (8/5): Very good - Good location, quiet neighborhood
- Yanbin (10/5): Very enjoyable - Great old England style cottage and very well decorated in excellent furniture and decoration matched the style. Melcolm also helped us to fix our car problems, much appreciated!
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb -
- Louis (8/5): Very satisfied except breakfasts need to be improved. - Very spacious and clean apartment. Very limited choice for breakfast. Milk was frozen solid and had to be left out of the fridge overnight to thaw out, then barely enough milk for cereal and coffee.
- Nigel (9/5): Accommodation above our expectations. - Malcolm was very helpful and welcoming. Fitted us in when we arrived a day early. Also provided food for breakfast.
- Joeph (9/5): Superb - Good healthy breakfast option, very tasty.
- Alison (8/5): Quiet and peaceful with everything we needed provided. - Self check in.
Breakfast provided. Lighting in living room is very dull and makes it hard for reading in the evening.
- Nik (9/5): Very pleasant. Will come again - Lovely little cottage. Cenral location. Super host. Highly recommended Minor point - the bedroom/bed a bit small but didn’t affect our 2 night stay
- Gary (10/5): Seriously good value! - Absolute perfection! No dislikes whatsoever!
- Esther (10/5): Love - Was lovely the toast and fruit and yoghurt The lock box key did not work on the code that was given .
We where send the correct code at 2 am in the morning.
Lucky we could contact the owners to rectify this.
- Jeanette (10/5): most pleasant - I would have liked the foods stuff labeled. eg low fat yoghurt we enjoyed our stay and the leisure time on the deck
- Sharon (10/5): Lovely - Excellent old charm cottage. Very comfortable. Accommodating owners who went out if their way to help us with a specific request we had.
- Charlene (8/5): Very good - lovely spacious rooms, kitchen, gorgeous rose garden and great location.
- Ian (8/5): Very good -
- Debra (9/5): Superb - This is a lovely cottage, well fitted out and in a gorgeous garden setting.
Was a peaceful retreat after a long day, and just what was needed.
Loved the brass bed .... prob wouldn't be any good for my 6'4" husband but since it was just me ... absolutely perfect.
- Sarah (9/5): Superb - Full kitchen, comfortable and large seating area, beautiful porch, strong wifi, comfortable bed, nice quiet area. shower leaks all over the bathroom floor, bed is on the small side.
- Fiona (10/5): Cosy and full of character. - Loved the location near my training venue, situated in a lovely quiet residential street.
Great character/ambience, thoughtfully decorated and accessorised character home with beautiful gardens and verandah.
