Cleanly kept rooms and private baths, which are wonderfully furnished in different themes and types of onsen. Nice meals made with freshly picked ingredients. Nothing in particular.

The balcony view from the room is breathtaking overlooking the city and Beppu Bay The hotel offers 4 family bath free to use in addition to the public bath was a big plus point. My wife and I had a wonderful and relaxing stay at the hotel. The services provided by the staff was top notch with Japanese hospitality in every aspect. Location is a bit secluded but is okay overall.

The meals provided were delicious, I was happy to be able to sample many different dishes and the service was amazing but the portion was a little too much for me, maybe half of what was provided would’ve been just perfect but nonetheless it was an amazing experience.

• Kevin (10/5): Our favorite place to stay in Beppu - My wife and I have traveled fairly extensively in Japan over the last decade or so, and Matsubaya has become our favorite place to to go for a deeply relaxing stay. This is a place that we will return to again and again. The staff are exceedingly welcoming, warm, and helpful. The rooms are well appointed, and ours had a very nice city/sea view. We took time to enjoy all the private/family baths, and they're all just lovely. The cafe/bar/lounge area with complimentary coffee, drinks, and draft beer was a welcome surprise that we really enjoyed. We also thought the traditional Japanese breakfast was above and beyond our expectations. Bottom line: excellent service, excellent food, excellent everything. Nothing. Some other reviews have complained about the location being remote and hard to find, but we didn't have any trouble finding it, and the location on a hill on the outskirts of the city is actually a positive, as far as I'm concerned. It's quiet, and you feel closer to nature than you do the city. Still, there are some convenience stores and a few local restaurants within walking distance, which you might not even need, since the meals available from the ryokan are excellent (but if you do venture out for a meal, I recommend checking out nearby Himedaruma for some great yakitori).

I have difficulty in finding parking place. I am sure it is clearly marked in Japanese. Unfortunately, I could not read Japanese. Nevertheless, staff guild us to parking spot right way at sight of my car approaching. Just small turbulance. Overall experience is fanastic.

I also liked the private onsen in room as well as the family onsen in the property checkout time earlier than most places and slightly far with no public transport access.

• Vale (6/5): Good, but not as expected - Staff was very kind and welcoming. Traditional dinner and breakfast were good. The environment was clean. Futon and pillows were very comfortable. The room was cold despite using the heater and there's no heater in the toilet either. No shower in the room: shower was available only in the private onsen, this means that if you need to shower after midnight you can't as the onsen closes at this time. Also, if someone else is using the onsen you cannot access it to have a shower. The onsen water was so hot that was not possible to stay in. This is the first time it happens as we've never had this problem in other Japanese onsen before. There's no booking system to use the private onsen, this means that if other guests are using them you have to wait. Also, you could not be able to use the onsen you want.

• Wei (10/5): we drove to the hotel and once we go up the slope, their staff came running to show us where to stop to unload. they par - most helpful staff always professional and ready to help. room is spacious and clean. very impressed. maybe just the kids meal has too much fried stuff, but that is a personal preference not a complaint
• SHIGEO (10/5): Excellent Japanese Inn with flowing hot baths. - The Matsubaya Inn is a traditional Japanese ryokan with both beds and futons and is excellent. It has several hot spring baths, which importantly, have a flow source for freshness. (Some hotels just boil water.) We stayed for three nights and our room (Azami) was very conveniently located close to the best of the hot springs, a spacious one with a view of the city and bay. We could put up an 'occupied' sign and use it privately for 45 min. The kaiseki dinner featured both Japanese beef and fish and was Michelin class. The breakfast was Japanese style with fish, and I missed a Western breakfast with eggs. The facilities are clean and simple and is perfect for adults. There's no game center for kids. The only minor drawback is that the inn is a bit apart from the main attractions. It's a yen 2000 taxi ride to most places, and the bus stop is about 15 min away. We like to walk, so didn't mind that.

We were greeted with green tea and dried fruit upon arrival, and taken to our room where we were able to unpack. Our beds were turned when we returned in the evening, which was very nice. Unfortunately we were unable to participate in dinner as we were watching the rugby game in Oita.

• Verified traveler (8/5): 還暦プレゼント旅行 - 還暦の誕生日プレゼント旅行で両親と一緒にこちらの松葉屋ｻﾝに宿泊しました｡ 部屋は洋室(ベッド2台)+和室の､リフォームがされたとても綺麗なお部屋で､トイレも洗面所も綺麗でとても過ごしやすく両親も喜んでいました｡ 小さな子供の浴衣も子供用アメニティもあり､子供もとても喜んでいました｡ お部屋や貸切風呂に置かれているアメニティが凄く良く､お客様に喜んで頂きたいと言う思いが伝わってきました｡ 貸切風呂や大浴場に置いてあるピーリングを使った所､驚く程凄く肌がツルツルもちもちになって気持ち良かったので帰り大量買いしました(笑) 少し残念だったのは、大浴場にはタオルが沢山用意されてあったのですが、貸切風呂の方には外の休憩出来る廊下部分にまとめて置いてあり､ストックの数も少なかったです｡ でも貸切風呂の種類の多さや広さ､とても満足で凄く癒されました｡ 食事は､夜ご飯は量も多くとても美味しかったのですが、 全体的に少し味が甘味が強くて食べ切る事が出来ず残してしまいました↓ でも夜､朝共にご飯の内容は大満足でした‼️ 子供のお子様ランチのおかずの多さと量も大満足で子供も沢山食べていました。 次はまた違うタイプのお部屋に是非泊まりに行きたいなと思っています！
