We were immediately struck by the incredible warmth and kindness of the owner. We had a long journey and arrived late at night, but she was waiting for us with such infectious energy and was so, so, so nice. It truly made the world of difference after traveling all day. What truly set this experience apart was the level of personal care. Knowing we were hungry, she not only secured a dinner reservation for us but personally called the restaurant to ask them to wait for us before closing. That act alone speaks volumes about her dedication and generosity! The location itself is stunning—Matera is without a doubt a magical place. To top off our memorable trip, the owner even gifted us a small little charm as a beautiful reminder of our stay. It’s these thoughtful, personal touches that elevate a trip from great to truly unforgettable. The room was beautiful, big, confortable and spotless. Thank you again for everything. We felt completely looked after and can't wait to return to this incredibly special spot. Everything was perfect!

Właścicielka Pani Simona bardzo miła i uczynna. Warto zarezerwować parking w garażu podziemnym kawałek od apartamentu. Śniadanie w restauracji około 300m od hotelu , kawa, bułka z wędlina, croasant. wszystko OK
• Lucille (10/5): An experience not to be missed staying in Matera! - Wonderful cave like rooms in a great location in the old town. Very clean, spacious, great shower. Simona was very welcoming and very knowledgeable about what to see in the area. Breakfast was a short walk away at a lovely cafe with incredible pastries and good coffee. At this stage it’s our favourite accommodation in our 4 week trip to Europe! Nothing! It was perfect!

Simona was genuine and attentive, taking care of every detail, from our accommodation and parking to guiding us through must-see city spots. The highlight was her helping us book one of the best restaurants for traditional Italian food — truly the best dishes we’ve ever had. Breakfast was included, freshly made, with some of the finest Italian desserts. The cave itself was super spacious for four people, very clean, with fresh air, a spotless bathroom, and all needed facilities. All three beds were extremely comfortable. Overall, we had a wonderful experience in this unique, clean, and spacious cave. Made even more special thanks to Simona’s thoughtful recommendations.

La disponibilité et la gentillesse d' Antonio qui nous a accueillis et accompagnés au parking et pris en charge nos valises. Le prix du parking privé vraiment trop élevé : 25 euros par jour.
• Doug (10/5): We highly recommend Hoplites and would encourage anyone to stay here. - We enjoyed the location in the Sassi with many restaurants nearby.We had arranged for car storage and luggage transportation which was very easy.The rooms were large and had everything that we needed.Communication was always very prompt. We only wish the breakfast was at one of the closer coffee shops,but enjoyed the breakfast that was included.

Je recommande fortement ce gîte qui est parfaitement situé en haut de la vielle ville mais surtout avec un accès facile depuis la nouvelle ville où Simona propose une place de parking dans un garage fermé. Petit déjeuner à l'italienne dans un très bon café patisserie. Rien, tout était parfait !

• Michelle (10/5): Memorable stay - The apartment is a delight. In a typical cave of the city. Very well decorated, clean and cozy. It has a wonderful shower. I would like to highlight and thank the education, attention, care and friendliness of the hostess Simone. She gave us several tips about the city, answered all our questions and was helpful from the beginning to the end of the stay. Nothing to complain about

The room was peaceful, beautifully designed, and felt like a sacred, quiet space to land after exploring. Every detail—from the lighting to the bedding—was thoughtful and calming. The staff were warm and attentive in a way that made it feel personal, not transactional. It was more than a stay—it felt like a gift. Nothing. Just be aware that, like many places in the Sassi, there are stairs and stone paths—it adds to the charm but may be tricky for those with mobility concerns.

• Alexes (10/5): Majestic - Perfect location and beautifully decorated. The apartment is cosy and atmospheric. The breakfast provided at a local bakery is absolutely delicious and Simone is so lovely and helpful.

• Alison (10/5): Great cave room for full Sassi experience - Great location in the Sasso Barisano. Amazing to stay in a 'cave room.' Simona was very friendly and helpful. Gave us a guide with map and made recommendations on where to visit, including going to the other side of the gorge the morning we left to see the view of the city from the Parco Della Murgia Materana. Public parking nearby or Simona can arrange paid private parking in a garage. Just personal preference, but I'd have liked fewer 'nick nacks' and fake flowers in the room. I think the cave would look better more natural with fewer decorations. (Be aware the fridge is just a very small wall cupboard for drinks bottles and there was no kettle or bathrobes in room as per booking.com description.)
