Guest Reviews
- Dean (10/5): - Our host Sarah was exceptionally accommodating and friendly. The Castle and the grounds had charm and great to explore nothing really
- Adrienne (10/5): Staying here is like stepping through a magical portal! Historic castle + river + amazing grounds. -
- Gavin (8/5): Cherish the opportunity to experience history and celebrate our heritage - Full of history and that you cannot put a price on. Sarah is a wonderful host
- Matthew (1/5): - Awful Awful
- Rob (8/5): Excellent location and facilities, ideal place to relax and reenergise. - Excellent location and facilities, ideal place to relax and reenergise.
- Viola (3/5): Avoid if you are after great customer service - Nice quiet location. They are very short staffed which makes it tricky when fully booked. The host seemed frustrated that a large number of guests came down for breakfast at the same time. We did not get our drinks order taken and had to chase it up. There is also a 1 hour window to have breakfast which is not ideal as many people travel for leisure and would appreciate not feeling rushed.
The rooms could have been cleaner, there were stains on the bathroom floor and the bath very old and slippery (an accident waiting to happen).
Did not feel welcome in this place, felt like i was actively ignored by the older lady host and would stay somewhere else if ever in Tiverton again.
- Julie (7/5): Fine, relaxing, improving the breakfast would make a great difference to the experience - Breakfast was a very basic continental, fruit, bread to toast, and cereal.
Tea and coffee
Fruit juices
Found some old celebration items inside my bed! Choice of breakfast

- Rosemary (10/5): Cosy, romantic stay in a historical castle. - We were given pretty rooms in the Moat Cottage, which were warm and comfortable. The castle is fascinating and we were lucky enough for our host let us in and we wandered around. Bickleigh Castle is a lovely romantic place for a cosy winter break. Nothing
- Gillian (10/5): Excellent stay - A very comfortable stay, wonderful host, beautiful hotel in very interesting surroundings. Nothing not to like.
- Alexandra (7/5): Lovely place to go but the organization needs sorting! - It is a beautiful property in a beautiful location. Our room was clean, spacious and comfortable. The history of the place is fascinating and it was very nice to have the old castle building opened for us so we could we could explore it. We enjoyed that. Our reception was chaotic. On arrival we found a lady leaving the property in her car. She asked if we were guests coming to the wedding. We were. She told us a room number and said keys were in the room. It took us a while and help from other visitors to find where to go. The rooms are situated in various cottages and buildings on the estate. Having left our luggage and setting off to the wedding we discovered that we had been given the wrong room and other guests were trying to move in. That got sorted, without the lady who saw us in, but we could have all done without the hassle.
The following morning we couldn't find where we needed to go for breakfast. There was no one on reception and it took a good half hour to find someone who could show us the building, and where to enter it.
Breakfast itself was uninspired but in a lovely room.
- NannyHog (4/5): - Location A superior twin was booked as we are friends @ £150.00 we got small Double bed. The electrical points were ext
Cords. The was no mirror, hairdryer etc and the shower cubicle was full of black mould. Had to move the bed to get to the electric ext pug and it was so encrusted with dust behind the bed. The bed itself was suspect as it looked like the bedding had not been changed. The one towel for two people was so thread bare you could see through it. No glasses or even paper cups for brushing
your teeth. Extractor fan did not work. Breakfast
was affair even the coffee was instant served in a pot. Lovely lady but dreadful everything else.
- Peter (9/5): -
- Sharon (5/5): -
- Mark (6/5): -
- Jackie (8/5): -
- Anne (8/5): - Location was idyllic and picturesque. Room was quirky. We were surprised that there was no cooked breakfast.Shower cubicle had mould in it.We d of loved to have a look around the castle but didn't feel it was possible.
- Walshe (7/5): -
- david (10/5): - A very unique experience. The host was really welcoming. and helpfully throughout our stayed
- Marilyn (10/5): An exceptional weekend in the grounds of an ancient castle and manor with a unique ambience. - Location fantastic historic castle beautiful. Breakfast adequate. Large, clean, comfortable room. Host exceptionally welcoming and friendly, made us feel like we were part of the family! Nothing
- Stuart (8/5): -
- Grout (2/5): - In a nice location Rooms were not clean. Hotel was run down. Very overpriced. Breakfast was not worth it
- Vicky (10/5): Perfect place for a break away or extended trip. - Absolutely beautiful place to stay. Brilliant hosts. A real gem in the Devon Countryside. We will be back x Shower pump a tad noisy, but the shower itself was amazing.
- Malvinder (7/5): I enjoyed the stay as the location is great in an area of immense natural beauty . Castle is preserved very nicely with - Great location, unique natural setting among the trees , period property with hardly any facility , limited service , Rooms very small, shower with very weak flow and difficulty staircase to go up and down , breakfast limited to bare basic,
- Kathrina (8/5): Castle - Wonderful surroundings and beautifully quiet.
It is quite rustic with a little magic thrown in. Could be clearer as to what facilities are available. For instance, it suggests that inflatables for the river are available but this isn't the case, you would need to bring your own.
Likewise, the tour currently only available on Thursdays, it would have been helpful to know this prior to arriving so as to avoid some initial disappointment.
- Ginny (9/5): Thank you for a delightful stay - Delightful place, full of character,
- peter (4/5): - Large room. With double and a single bed. We were in a cottage near to the main building which was shared with others. Parking outside. We were in the grounds of a small Castle/manor house. so nice to wander around. Poor cleanliness. Shower seal around tray was covered in mould. Continental Breakfast only. On the second day the room was not cleaned or the tea tray replenished.
Room had a lot of windows so there was no room for a wardrobe. To hang clothes there were only coat hooks near to the door. The shower was Pumped which was very loud. TV worked intermittently. Only did breakfast but there was a decent pub with in a mile away. Single track road but that was to be expected. Also a ford to cross.
- kumar (9/5): - Room appearance is good Bath shower place is small
- David (5/5): If they can improve the service then will be fabulous. - Fabulous location, very quiet, beautiful surroundings. Shower room very cramped. Bed possibly as old as the Castle (11th century)
Breakfast very mediocre, just cereals and diy toast and a very tired croissant
- Martin (10/5): -
- Michael (8/5): Great location, friendly hosts and a very comfortable night's rest. - Great location, property and grounds. One of the best night's sleep we've had when staying over somewhere. The bedd was very comfortable. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. Great overnight stay.
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional - Peaceful Nothing
- Maureen (5/5): Very disappointing. We toyed with leaving early but stuck it out - Fresh fruit in the breakfast buffet. Nothing else. The room was very small and cramped. The bed was a small double. There was no wardrobe. The TV was tiny and the reception poor. There was no WiFi in the room. The room only had one set of towels on arrival. The room was not serviced.
Although a kettle, coffee etc was provided when we made coffee it was undrinkable. We were not sure if this was due to the water quality or something else.
The manager was away and had left the gardener in charge of reception. He then disappeared and the only person we saw was a young girl who did the breakfast. It was difficult to pin down when breakfast would be available - in the end it was 9 am before we got anything.
Apart from the fruit, breakfast was poor - ' continental' with little choice , sliced bread and.no.marmalade
- Anlien (6/5): Pleasant -
- Karl (6/5): Interesting Location - Location. Historical. Twin Bedroom Bathroom was very small and tired. Not very clean.
Continental Breakfast was poor. Only had croissants one out of the two days. Cereal choice very basic, hardly any choice.
- Terry (8/5): Very good -
- Trevor (8/5): Very good -
- Stephenson (10/5): Loved it - LOVED THE CASTLE AND THE SURROUNDING GARDENS . THE RELAXED ATMOSPHERE AND THE FRIENDLY SERVICE. LOVED THE ROOM AND THE BATHROOM, JUST HAD TO HET USED TO THE HESVEY DOORS THAT TENDED TO SLAM BUT OTHERWISE ABSOLUTELY LOVED EVERYTHING FROM WALKING AROUND THE CASTLE AND GARDENS TO FALLING INTO BED AT NIGHT AND STRAIGHT INYO DEEP SLEEP 😴 Maybe the heavy fire doors and creaking floors but LOVED the authenticity
- Paula (10/5): Exceptional - Bickleigh Castle is the perfect retreat for a relaxing break. Absolutely stunning historic buildings and gardens ,cannot wait to return to this enchanting and peaceful hidden gem. Sarah, Wendy & Katy and all the staff were very welcoming.
- Felton (9/5): A unique and quirky place, not quite what we expected but really enjoyed our stay - A unique private hotel with the very friendly owner running things. Nice to stay somewhere that wasn't a chain, rare to see these days. Continental breakfast provided with plenty of choices and warm croissants given.
- Joseph (10/5): Quiet location with a castle! - Great continental breakfast. Hostess was wonderful. Nice quiet country setting. Awesome to be next to an old castle and getting the opportunity to tour it!
- Linda (6/5): Delightful venue. Not for those who like the modern. - Venue. The steep steps. Though this was in keeping with the property.
- Christopher (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keith (5/5): Quaint rustic property. - Very rustic property, listed. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom was fine. Amenities in room ok. Breakfast was fine. A bit rundown all round. Wifi was terrible. The owner said it was fine last week and that she would get a technician in. If WiFi is very important to you, then check with the owner before booking.
- Kevin (9/5): Excellent hostess. - Nice comfortable accommodation. Excellent hostess. Within 10 mins walk of a pub. Nowt.
- Philip (10/5): Unique, special and superb customer service. - The staff were superb. Relaxed, welcoming and made you feel like family. The owner, Sarah, especially.
If you’re wanting a shiny, modern, high tech hotel don’t come here. However if you want a unique old castle, exceptional customer service and beautiful surroundings you will be hard pushed to find better than this lovely place. I didn’t like the fact that I could only stay for 1 night, not their fault, mine.
- Angela (10/5): every thing was brilliant. - breakfest was great. bed great. most of all we were made at home by the owners. it was cold weather
- Patricia (10/5): A stunning venue, rooms are in thatched cottages. We were looked after by wonderful hosts. - A beautiful location set in well kept grounds. Rooms are spotlessly clean and beds are extremely comfortable. The castle is rich in history and the hosts were wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble. We’re booking another night on our way home. Nothing, it was perfect.
- Steward (7/5): Good -
- Paul (8/5): Nice stay - Very peaceful . Lovely pub up the road. No cooked breakfast. Would have liked to look around the castle.
- Martina (8/5): Beautiful place - Great location, lovely staff and host. Very beautiful area, loved staying on castle grounds, really enjoyed it.
- Copleston (8/5): Step back in time away from the hustle and bustle. - Beautiful setting, very quiet. Quaint and historic building, like stepping back in time. Very friendly host, added bonus was Timmy the cat. Excellent breakfast, nothing was too much trouble. Great pub up the road Fisherman's Cot. Woken up in the morning to the sound of the river running and the birds singing. Fabulous
- Emma (9/5): Superb - The character and the staff.
- Joanne (10/5): A break away to remember - Idealic location, beautiful scenery, rich history, comfortable and quiet.
- Angie (8/5): Very good -
- Vicki (9/5): Superb, unique little find.would love to return. X - Perfect little weekend getaway. Sarah and her team were lovely and helpful.
The rooms were clean and tidy and the impromptu history lesson as we visited the castle was the icing on the cake for us both.
- Garry (9/5): Relaxing,, quiet and comfortable and would recommend Bickleigh to friends. - Very friendly and helpful host. Our room was wonderful. Two enormous double beds which were very comfortable. The ensuite was clean and had a good shower. The room had adequate supply of teas and coffee with biscuits and the breakfast was delivered on time with the best croissants ever. Historic and atmospheric location with the castle and surroundings. It was easy to find and to park. There is a decent pub with meals available right by the river just 5 minutes drive or, if you are brave enough to chance the narrow lanes with no paths, a 10 to 15 minute walk. I can not think of anything that we did not like but we were very lucky that, during the time we stayed, we were the only guests so had 100% attention, privacy and peacefulness.
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Kate (10/5): Magical, old and full of atmosphere - It was a night where you stepped back in time. The castle was beautiful and felt as old and atmospheric as it actually is in a 1000 Yr old castle.
Very friendly warm host too and lovely to look around the old Chapel and guard rooms. It was a surprise for my husbands 50th birthday and was a very special weekend well not forget.thank you
- Ozlem (9/5): Lovely - Our host and yhecastle was lovely.
They are still renovating the castle.
However, the general facilities and the host was great.
She met us to give the jey and we had a very nice nrealfat Everything
- Jozef (8/5): Very good -
- Darren (6/5): nice place, but slightly flawed. - The setting was nice, lovely to see lots of Bats at night. The place really is nice, but could do with a bit of a overhall........ And a deep clean.
The Host was very attentive and the continental breakfast was very nice. was also pleasant to see that at breakfast help was on hand if needed but not intrusive. The main issues that myself and my partner found was that for how much you pay we don't feel it fully reflects the cost. Our room, whilst warm, was dusty in places. The bathroom had seen better days. The bed sheet did not fit the mattress properly, and the mattress itself is in need of replacing.
In order to iron any clothing, this had to be done in the laundry area, and wasn't available in your actual room, which was a bit of a surprise.
Also be aware, the walls are thin, so you can hear pretty much everything the person in the next room is doing.
However, we did enjoy our brief stay.
- Coyle (8/5): Very great experience. - We arrived pretty late, but staff was friendly and showed us around, even played with my daughter a bit and handled her, frankly, excessive excitement at being in a castle. Not so much a didn't like, but if you are interested in touring the castle, make sure you sign up for it when you book.
- Charlotte (7/5): Very knowledgeable and chatty hosts, beautiful buildings. - Lovely location, room situated in a beautiful cottage. Bathroom located outside of our room.
Electrics a bit questionable with the overloaded extension.
- Wing (8/5): Very good -
- Veronica (8/5): Lovely grounds especially with the castle in the garden - Beautiful location . Good continental breakfast. Easy interaction with Sarah the host who made sure we had everything we needed. Booked an Accessible room but unable to access the shower and only one short grab rail by the toilet .
- Geoffrey (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful property, very friendly host
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Stuart (8/5): Very good -
- Amelia (9/5): An historic hidden gem - What a fabulous find! With bad weather forecast we had a late-minute change of plans but wanted to stay somewhere ‘different’ - and this fabulous 1000+ year old gem in the Devonshire countryside was just that! We booked the one suite in the main castle and a twin with huge beds for the adult children - very comfortable all round. Breakfast was hot and hearty and the hosts John and Sarah couldn’t have done more. Nothing - but hope the hot tub is back up and running next time we visit!
- Richard (9/5): Superb - The unhurried trip around the castle the morning before our departure
- Stephen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keryn (8/5): Very good - Hosts were great and accommodating.
- Charme (8/5): Enjoyed the tour of property very much & enjoyed having owners sharing it history - Good breakfast, lovely you woman on duty looked after us very well and was very cheerful which make for a good start for the dad
- Rachel (8/5): Beautiful escape - Peaceful restful historic quaint N/a
- Iris (10/5): A perfect escape from the modern world with super hosts! - I had long wanted to stay at Bickleigh Castle, for many years before being possible to book as a B&B guest. I have to say, it did not disappoint and was worth the wait!
On arrival I was struck at just how pretty the setting is, pictures don't do the castle estate justice. It's a lot smaller than I had imagined, in an intimate way. Stepping into the courtyard, is like going back in time. Although Bickleigh is only a short hop from Tiverton, it's cocooned in the Exe Valley and hidden away, a million miles from the modern world. Just the place to turn off my phone, to disappear for a long weekend retreat.
I stayed in the Tudor Room, and was delighted to be shown around by John, one of the owners. His passion for the castle's history is infectious, I loved all of the notes placed beside the artwork and in strategic places. The bed was superbly comfortable and wide enough to lay across, and not reach the edges (lovely quality bedding too).
Being able to walk around the property at night, is a big draw. When the public has gone, and most people are in bed, I like to wonder and soak up the atmosphere. Bickleigh has a lot to share. Sitting in the hall, in candlelight, it's easy to allow yourself to picture how it might have been, hundreds of years ago. Not much different I expect. The lack of road noise, and the blissful peace and quiet was heavenly.
Breakfast was superb. I've stayed in many top notch hotels, castles, and the like; the full English here was by far the best yet. Everything was cooked perfectly, and everything was tasty. I'm not one for continental breakfasts, but I was enticed by strawberries, raspberries and a fresh croissant from the oven. Superb, and great table service too.
When Monday morning came, I was loathed to leave. I was delighted to meet Sarah on my out, the owner, and to join her for a spot of rose pruning. I departed with cuttings I'll treasure as a reminder of a wonderful visit. That I had to return to reality!
- David (10/5): The highlight was John's knowledgeable and enthusiastic tour of his castle after breakfast! - Continental breakfast was fine (cooked costs extra). This is a pretty standard B&B that transforms into a hotel for wedding events. Accommodation is in listed thatched cottages (there is one room in the castle). Overall impression - a bit amateurish, but in a good way. Be sure to make time for John's free tour of the castle after breakfast!
- Kathryn (10/5): Friendly, fun and the most beautiful place to stay. - Room was clean, comfortable and very spacious. Hosts were friendly, welcoming and very knowledgeable about the area and where to visit. Breakfast was great, plenty of choice and nothing was too much trouble when we ordered a cooked breakfast late.
Hot tub, trampoline and more were available to us as activities to enjoy if staying on site which was great, the recommended eateries were spot on and the 3 we tried we would definitely go to again.
We would definitely stay at Bickleigh Castle again. Would love it if an evening meal menu was available, especially as breakfasts were so good!
- Paul (9/5): This was something we will always remember fondly. Great memories. Loved it. - The breakfast was good. The ability to walk around the entire grounds of the castle was great. Having a family game of tennis at no extra cost was also good fun. My daughter absolutely loved staying in the four poster bedroom in the castle. It exceeded her expectations. John giving us a guided tour after breakfast and telling us about the history of the castle was interesting and fascinating. A special mention to Wendy as well who was very helpful indeed when I called the week before the stay. There was nothing I would say I did not like, but understandably they operate with a lean number of staff and there is no receptionist so 'checking in' and 'checking out' was not particularly smooth. Some people will need to be reminded that this is a Grade 1 listed building that was built centuries ago, so you will have to make do with some of the en-suites being outside of the rooms.
- Gayani (8/5): Very good -
- John (10/5): A little piece of history. - Really pleased with room and time spent by owners to make our stay memorable. Lovely location and history of building etc. N/A
- Elizabeth (10/5): A Little Gem 💎 - Very enjoyable stay, fabulous setting, staff enthusiastic and friendly, comfortable clean beds ,Castle tour brilliant, special thanks to Sarah, wendy and John ,nothing was too much trouble, thank you for making our stay memorable we will be back. Having to leave, wish we could have stayed longer 🙃
- Lee (7/5): Excellent location, beautiful accommodation - A cooked breakfast is extra. The included breakfast consists of cereal, fruit, yoghurt and a single croissant. It was pleasant, the property is beautiful in a beautiful location. Host is very friendly and a tour of the castle was fantastic! Breakfast options could have been clearer during booking process
- Barry (7/5): bathroom shabby a share bathroom not stated by you glad we did not have more days - good
- Linda (7/5): Good -
- Ann (9/5): Superb - The environment is a fantastic heritage site with buildings ranging from a 6th Century Chapel - the oldest standing building in Devon - to 16th Century, 18th Century buildings and lovely thatched cottages clustered around a charming courtyard. The facilities in the cottages could have been more modern - but what can you do with a 18th Century building and still make it feel authentic??
- Jayne (10/5): A beautiful experience in a beautiful part of the country - A unique experience, lovely being able to have a tour of the castle Nothing
- Helen (9/5): We were made to feel so welcome and had a wonderful stay at this magical location! - We were made to feel so welcome and had a wonderful stay at this magical location!
- Lester (9/5): Comfortable, quirky and very differed from chain hotels - John was a superb host. The castle is quirky and if you are looking for an experience thats a little bit different this is definately for you; Could not fault our stay, we hugely enjoyed it. Next time we will stay more than one night. Nothing
- Wood (2/5): Nice bloke, nice gardens, but house is an utter mess and don’t bother with the cooked breakfast. - The house had character, the host was very friendly, and the gardens were lovely. The room was very dated, the curtains were very thin so the sun came through first thing, everywhere seemed a bit grubby. The bathroom was disgusting: it had black mould all over the window, the window was broken, the grout was covered in yellow mould/ grime, the shower barely worked. I had the full English breakfast and the quality of the ingredients was poor.
- Coe (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (10/5): Memorable . Beautiful - Beautiful venue. Full of charm and history. Nothing all good.
- Judith (8/5): Very good - Beautiful tranquil location with easy access from the main road.
- Lorna (8/5): Very good -
- Linda (10/5): A wonderful castle experience - A fabulous stay in a picturesque location. It was a lovely quiet spot and the castle was great to see. Our room was nice and big and the kids had their own singe beds which was great. John recommended a few restaurants to us and we had a nice dinner in the local village.
John gave us a tour of the castle which was great. The kids loved the weapons rooms. A wonderful experience, highly recommend. The only issue was that we were there on a warm day and the heater / radiator still came on in the room at night, which made it very warm. We opened the windows though a fan would have been great (or the heater not to come on 😊). Other than that, everything was wonderful.
- Emma (10/5): Amazing experience - Bickleigh Castle is unique and charming. So full of real history with picturesque views around every corner. The staff were all incredibly helpful. Comfortable cottages and well worth paying extra for the cooked breakfast. I recommend and hope to return.
- Hollie (8/5): Lovely break away - Amazing location, so picturesque. Hosts were really lovely people and went out of their way to make our stay a happy and positive one. Breakfast was amazing! Well worth paying extra for a cooked breakfast. We loved the authenticity of the castle and rooms and the garden space was incredible. The rooms themselves could have done with a freshen up; a fresh coat of paint etc.
- Claire (10/5): Exceptional -
- Chris (9/5): very friendly hosts, very picturesque location - good breakfast, beautiful surroundings
- Vikki (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location and accommodation. Nothing.
