Guest Reviews
- Michelle (1/5): The Hotel That Never Was - Nothing as when arrived it was an abandoned building in total disarray , boreded up ans absolutely no a single sole to be found
Absolutely disgraceful What didn't I like !!!!
There was nothing to like as it is an abandoned Hotel
This had been booked months ago as just somewhere to stay the night as we where travelling from Leeds to attend a wedding the next morning not far from Hotel Knowesgate.
Could not believe it when we arrived to find it all shut down
We had been travelling all.day it was getting late and we needed to find another place to stay bearing in mind we where out in the middle of no where in Northumberland.
Was not a nice feeling at all
Absolutely fuming!!!
- Guest (1/5): Non-Existant - Nothing It was closed, not even notified until I arrived
- David (1/5): Contacting us as we were travelling to the property by saying “Sorry the hotel is now closed” is disgusting. -
- Nicole (1/5): Appalling customer service would not recommend - That they cancelled on us half way on our 7 hour journey to a big event in Newcastle
- Guest (1/5): - So I booked the room on booking.com for 3:00-4:00 in the morning as I needed a room immediately, I received an email from the hotel & the check in wasn't the time I selected, it was 15:00-18:00. Those times would be useless. I phoned the Hotel & I said I needed to check in now, & I was told to phone up later on as the receptionist ain't here. I won't be paying a fee due to lack of miscommunication from you to booking.com
Can't rate when I haven't stayed.
- ft (1/5): - L'hôtel est fermé.
- RAFAEL GABRIEL (1/5): - El hotel no existe. No está abierto. Booking debería asegurarse antes de ofertar un hotel que no está funcionando, y además en un lugar aislado, a más de media hora en coche de la ciudad más próxima
- Guest (1/5): DONT use booking.com disgusting service, booked us the hotel that did not exist - After drove 10 hours to get in to this hotel was so hard to found and when we founded was close for maintenance repair.
We was so tired couldn’t drive no more couldn’t found another hotel available.
How in the earth booking.com can do this to the customer .
We contacted them and the only thing we got was they saying we can give you refund 🫣
Disgusting customer service.
Do you not book this business Was not open for business was close for maintenance
- Artur (1/5): - There was nothing to like. The hotel was completely closed, abandoned, and unusable. There was nothing to like. The hotel was completely closed, abandoned, and unusable.
- Susanna (1/5): DISGUSTING SCAM HOTEL IS NOT OPEN BUT WILL TAKE THE MONEY - THE HOTEL WAS SHUT ITS A SCAM THE HOTEL WAS SHUT AND DERELICT IT IS A SCAM DO NOT BOOK - WE HAD TO GO AND STAY ELSEWHERE BUT THEY TOOK THE MONEY IN ADVANCE ANYWAY. DO NOT BOOK!
- Andrew (1/5): THE HOTEL IS A DERELICT BUILDING - THIS IS A SCAM THIS IS A SCAM
- Darren (1/5): DO NOT BOOK CLOSED... - Place is Closed.....Never stayed and now says fully booked for the next 2 weeks... Been closed for 6 months.. But still allowed to take reservations until I complained to Booking.com
- Ben (1/5): The hotel that wasn’t - Building has been permanently closed for some time according to locals It should not be listed
- Michael (1/5): It was impossible to stay at the Knowesgate Hotel. It has been derelict for years and cannot accept - The fact that booking.com confirmed this hotel was available - even purporting to send a welcome message from the hotel itself on the day of my intended stay - when in fact this hotel has long been derelict. I had to find alternative accommodation with just a few hours notice, having only discovered that this hotel was not fit for guests by chance. I also learned that another family had been misled about the availability of this hotel by booking.com 18 months ago! Please make sure you are aware and honest about the hotels you confirm bookings for!
- Cassandra (9/5): Superb -
- Orcamaus (1/5): Full charge for a stone-cold room and a poor basic breakfast - AVOID!!! - The location is right "in the middle of nowhere", within the beautiful Northumberland National Park - nice and quiet, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.
Perfect to do day trips within the National Park and its picturesque towns & villages. - no central heating in WINTER (travel time: early November); I had to sleep in 4 LAYERS of clothes to keep warm and to avoid catching a cold in a 10 degrees cold bedroom, because the electric heater provided did not work properly, either
- only one (untrained!!!) staff member to tend to the guests (travel time: early November)
- TV worked but stand was broken - it was leaning loosely aganst the wall
- no warm water (unless you let the water run for about 10 minutes - what a WASTE!) in an unheated, stone-old bathroom (ca 10 degrees in early November)
- all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet (incl cooked options) advertised, but NO breakfast provided, except for Corn Flakes (no choice of cereals), 500 ml milk (no choice of skimmed/semi-skimmed milk, no lactose-free or dairy-free options), 2 slices of white toast (no "brown" option), a couple of tiny plastic jam pots, coffee (no tea options), zero cooked options!
My advice to the hotel management:
If you cannot be bothered to pay for central heating and for trained staff outside the main travelling season, don't bother opening for business and charging tourists the FULL rate for a room despite not providing the full service!
- Allira (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were very friendly and accomodating to our needs. The rooms were clean and well appointed with ammenities. The hotel is massive and felt a little abandoned. However, it was as expected from new management so I do not have any complaints.
- Obaidul (1/5): Please clean the dust and hoover the carpet pls - Its worst nothing to say Full of dust i dont like it
- Jason (9/5): Quietly tooked out the way of all the bustle of the city and lovely surroundings - Loved the location of the place only downfall is that I don't think Uber like travelling out to pick you up upon checking out/ leaving so best to have your own transport i.e car Basically getting there isn't a problem but if you don't drive it's difficult to get a Uber home from the hotel also nowhere delivers food to there on Uber eats or just eat but they do have a restraunt onsite but unfortunately it wasn't open when me and my partner went but apart from transport home and not deliverable takeaways it was great very welcoming and lovely staff and comfortable rooms
- James (1/5): This hotel is abysmal, not ready to accept guests, we have been mislead by booking.com & sold a with breakfast packa - Nothing - arrived at the time arranged for check in, all doors were locked. Eventually after 10 minutes standing & walking around in 8 inches of wet snow, someone came to let us in. Said they had to keep locked for security?? No staff, “hotel” is barely open, person who let us in was more like a care taker / security rather than reception. Hotel was cold, no heating on, no hot water in the evening when we wanted to wash (was hot the next morning). Double Bed was wrecked, meaning my wife & I would roll together in the middle whether we wanted to or not (very uncomfortable). Very noisy road just outside window (A696, main route from Newcastle to Edinburgh). No bar / no food in evening, tv propped up in corner of room, other room had no tv. We booked breakfast, but no hot breakfast available. Choice was one choice of cereal (half used large box) or toast, looked like we were sharing the breakfast food from the staff who lived in. Certainly weren’t going to get a full English breakfast, left without having breakfast. This hotel should not be accepting guests, as it is not fit for purpose & staff are not trained. Pile of fire extinguishers on the floor in reception, but not on walls down corridors or in usable areas. No maps showing escape routes in rooms. I am exhausted so won’t go on anymore, you get the picture - we have been ripped off, thanks booking.com
- Mark (4/5): Well at least it's open. - The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. The smell of damp throughout the building.
- Simon (1/5): Bombshell of a hotel - Nothing The place is a bombshell do not stay here
- Zen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Helen (7/5): Adequate for an overnight stay, but not quite 3 star yet - Presented as an English pub, & we were expecting some thing a bit more rustic, but is under new management so the experience may vary. Staff made us welcome & attended to our needs as requested. Old, & in need of update. Was comfortable enough after a long day driving from Scotland.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional - Very good value
- Robert (1/5): Worst hotel that I've ever stayed in during over 40 years of business travel - Bed linen was clean Hotel was very run down looking with main entrance closed off and had to enter via bar which didn't appear functional. Central heating didn't work with small electric heater next to bed attempting to supply warmth (not very efficient as it was only 3º) TV in room had intermittant picture and didn't work on any channel, hot water took almost 5 minutes to come out of tap when initially turning on. When asking for an evening meal was offered a plate of French fries and nuggets which was delivered to my room, the french fries were soggy and almost inedible. In the morning there was no staff to be found with the reception unmanned and a breakfast table only had some fruit on it and coffee/tea making facilities
- Brenda (1/5): Bad - Nothing closed to public you should not have this hotel on your Web site The hotel is not open no food no drinks.
Breakfast terrible xmall fridge loaf of bread cereals coffee no-one around dimmly lit.
- Jim (1/5): Read all of the reviews. Believe them. Avoid. Get a taxi & go somewhere else. Anywhere else. - I used Booking.com to book my stay at the "Knowesgate Hotel" and my Booking was confirmed. But.... when I arrived I was informed that the hotel was under new management - it had been re-incarnated as the "Hotel Knowesgate". Subtle change I know but the new owners did not recognise my confirmed booking and so I had to pay again. This was to stay in the same room at the same physical hotel as I had already booked. To add insult to injury it was now double the cost of my previous booking. I was walking St. Oswald's Way and had just done ~20 miles but Knowesgate is miles from anywhere so realistically I had no choice.
That evening a couple of blokes were very loud in the corridor outside my room. This lasted half the night so I got no rest. I even wedged a chair under the door handle which I have never felt the need to do either before or since. Breakfast was dreadful - soggy cornflakes and the water urn for tea/coffee was cold. All in all this is the absolute worst experience I have ever had either with Booking.com (and I am genius level 3 having stayed maybe 100 times) or indeed with anyone else.
Read all of the reviews. Believe them. Avoid like the plague. Get a taxi and go somewhere else. Anywhere else.
- Phil (1/5): Bad -
- Martin (6/5): Very welcoming and helpful staff. - The hotel has just changed hands, after a period of closure. The two owners, Sunni and Sayed, went out of their way to ensure I was made welcome and that the room was as clean and warm as they could.
They made every effort to ensure my stay was comfortable, which it was.
I have no doubt that when they have been able to make a few 'tweaks' this will be a very good hotel and they will be able to charge a lot more for the services they provide.
At present it is a work in progress and as such is very good value for money.
- Lupu (7/5): Good - clean and quite one of the room has ver humid air
- Jemma (8/5): Very good -
- Kevin (10/5): Has a contractor travelled around the country we did 11 nights great value for money - Lovely breakfast, something different what you would get from other hotels Nothing
- Amjad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandra (1/5): Not good - Did not have breakfast Not good overall
- Andrew (8/5): Bed was comfy had a great sleep. - Very old place, old red phone box inside. New owners were very friendly. Tv reception a bit ropey.
- Andy (4/5): You charged me twice for this booking- still waiting for refund !!! -
- Alexandru (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (6/5): Pleasant - The staff were so friendly and couldn't do enough. I was doing the GNR, so I didn't want breakfast, but they tried to offer me something to make for the journey. It was a bit old fashioned
- Rob (10/5): Lovely people, 10 out of 10 for effort. Remote countryside location with scenic views on the drive up. - The staff were lovely, really helpful and polite. Sadly we never got to try the stir fries.
- Dara (9/5): Under new management and details need updating of what is an isn't available for guests - Loved how it's in middle no where does have carpark as well rooms are brilliant sized with unsuite bathroom both bath/shower toilet an sink smells nice as well in rooms we had to swap rooms as bed wasn't great we stayed 2 night I could have stayed all week, it is under new management an does need more like cafe an bar open an does say breakfast this is fruit, toast n very limited ATM once the proper breakfast starts and bar opens this place will be perfect am from a busy house so I absolutely loved it's bigger than looks but it's lovely staff friendly an happy to help with anything! I will be staying again i really enjoyed it here 🙂 I don't like how tea, coffee, sugar an milk ain't in rooms just coffee all in ones you have to go what will be cafe when up and running properly but I couldn't be bothered to keep walking back an forth and from working in a hotel for many years it's them lil things after a long day traveling an kinda just wanting to chill would be good again on booking.com it doesn't state that it's under new management so could be a big problem for alit of customers could do with being updated along with the rooms as said extras on ours but I just enjoyed it in general however could cause bad reviews if not updated correctly, there is a sign outside on main sign saying buffet breakfast this isn't the case with the new management maybe get that also covered up for now until the hotels fully back up and running alit of potential an such a lovely place just lacking the simple things ie breakfast really could do with spec with people traveling alot like a cooked breakfast and get the cafe open for teas even if burger an chips cause again people traveling may hope cab grab something at hotel an like I say doesn't state on booking .
- Robert (8/5): No bad place to stay. - Great staff with a smile. Even cooked me a burger at 10 pm cause nothing on just eat. Thanks for upgrade to a room each instead of a twin. Would of liked to of seen at least egg on toast or something cooked and a better selection of Continental.
- John (1/5): Nightmare - No hot water my room was damp and it’s worst accommodation I’ve ever stayed in
- Paul (2/5): Very poor -
- Clinton (2/5): Very poor - No Hot water, Dirty bed sheets,
- Amjad (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were friendly and welcoming Nothing lovely area to have walks in
- Scott (1/5): Not good - Not good. Nothing there all i got was its new owners Everything
- Kim (10/5): It’s a no brainer really like. Ya don’t rent hotel rooms to sit in all day do ya. Go try if ya not fussy for the money c - It’s a nice old building in a beautiful place.
Not too far from the town but far enough for the nice walks n quiet.
Yes they just took over a week ago so a see good things for this place n me sleep aw my god most comfortable bed available ever slept in in an hotel. Very comfortable n lovely sleep.
As a said they just took over but the price we paid we had bottles water coffee there n breakfast what more do ya want ya can’t ask for more. Even stuff there for ya to eat at night if ya get hungry yes some toast n cereal but where else does that. Look if ya looking for five star then go n pay five star money. This place here what a beautiful area it is in.
- .odonnell (5/5): You pay for what you get - Friendly staff helpful and location
Problem with TV they changed it
Comfortable beds On entry smell off damp
Breakfast isn't really good
Needs a re think
Bathroom too small
- Gav (1/5): Bad - Nothing The premises were advertised as the house 250yrds away. The photos were not a true representative of the outside.(Taken in the dark with lights reflecting) Entrance was grubby & the owner tried to clean it after my concerns. over abundance of air freshener throught the building.. Refused to stay & have asked Booking.com for a refund.
