Guest Reviews
- Illya (10/5): Amazing host and location - Amazing small hotel run by a warmhearted family. To access will recommend a high ground clear véhicule, but the view is worth it! They also offer a visit of their coffee farm which was probably the most authentic activity we done in CR.
- Stephanie (8/5): -
- Thomas (8/5): -
- Marie (10/5): -
- Sandy (1/5): Sehr einfache Unterkunft. - Das Personal war sehr bemüht. Es war unheimlich kalt. Wir sind mit Pullover ins Bett gegangen. Die Wände in den Räumen waren nass.
Im Aufenthaltsraum/Restaurant war es kalt. Der Kamin rußte so stark . Der ganze Qual zog in den Raum. Unsere Sachen haben nach Rauch gestunken.
Wir sind nach der ersten Nacht abgereist.
- Sara (8/5): -
- Dominik (9/5): - V horách. Vzhledem k prostředí dosti vlhko......
- Esteban (9/5): -
- Danny (10/5): Great - We loved the hotel is the middle of the forest . We loved every single detail of it.
- Marco (9/5): Rústico y cómodo. - Inmerso en las montañas y la naturaleza. Detalles mínimos de mantenimiento rápidamente solucionados.
- Francisco (9/5): Hermosas vistas.
- Michaela (8/5): -
- Pip (9/5): Amazing! Rural lodge with incredible views and nature. - The Vistavista Lodge is absolutely incredible. We loved every minute of our two-night stay.
It’s completely off the beaten track but very much worth the slightly bumpy road to get there. The views across the lake to the volcano are simply breathtaking. Waking up to that panorama each morning was something special.
The staff are so warm and welcoming, and the food was delicious throughout our stay. There’s also a beautiful waterfall on the property, it’s a bit of a trek to reach, but absolutely worth the walk.
The lodge arranged a half-day bird and nature walk for us with a guide called David, who was excellent. If you can request him, do, he’s knowledgeable, passionate and made the experience even more memorable.
If you’re looking for somewhere peaceful, surrounded by extraordinary scenery and far from the tourist crowds, The Vistaverde Lodge is perfect. Oh, and don't forget to buy some of their coffee from the manager's farm. Fab!!! A taste of Costa Rica at home :) The room was a little cold but we had warm gear and once in bed, with the blankets, it was nice and snug. You are at 1700m here and with no wind protection, it can get chilly but don't let that put you off, just take trousers and a fleece. You'll need it in the Cloud Forest anyhow.
- Marlena (9/5): Very nice hosts, good breakfast, nice dog, large and tidy room and free tea in the evening because it was cold in the ro - Very nice hosts, good breakfast, nice dog, large and tidy room and free tea in the evening because it was cold in the room 😊 sitting Next to the chimney was Great It was Cold on top of the Mountain but that‘s Not the owners fault 😃
- Greer (8/5): Lovely Monteverde lodge off the beaten path - Manager and his family and very helpful and responsive, the breakfasts are excellent, and the location is beautiful. Despite being off-grid, the lodge has pretty reliable wifi to communicate with the outside world. Staff did a great job connecting us with local guides and activities. Lodge is pretty far from town via a rough gravel road; best if you have your own transportation and are comfortable driving wet and challenging roads. Taxi fare is $20 each way (20-30 minutes) if you aren't able to hitch a ride with the manager's family or another guest.
Rooms are lovely and spacious but remember that this is a rural lodge in the cloud forest. There is no heating or cooling so it can get a bit chill at night and everything is damp always.
- Alessandro (8/5): - Food, staff Location

- Anne (10/5): Very happy with our stay here - Vista Verde Lodge is on the top of a steep hill with an amazing view all the way down to Lake Arenal and beyond--that is, when the clouds allow. It is very close to the Selvatura Nature Park. The owner and staff are very friendly and the food is amazing. They have a hike down to a small waterfall on the property--steep hill, but pretty.
The rooms are comfortable and large, and the lodge is set up with tables for playing games or hanging out. It is *very* quiet there and you really feel like you are in a cloud forest. the showers are a little finicky--getting the mix of hot and cold water right can be difficult.
You are pretty far from Santa Elena, pretty far from anything, really, which we didn't mind. But you need transport or a vehicle to get to the sights/activities in the area.
- David (8/5): Great little place and nice people - Amazing views; lovely staff; great breakfast. Other reviews talk about the worst road ever… they clearly have not driven in Costa Rica! Their road is better than the road to Selvatura! It’s all fine and basic.
- Mukesh (7/5): Overall good, staff is very good, amenities could have been better. - It is located on top of the mountain, very scenic,
Staff was good and very welcoming. The stay was difficult due to missing amenities like a hair dryer and coffee maker. The room was very cold due to the mountain elevation and weather, and it definitely needs a heater. Additionally, the access road is too rough for nighttime driving. We also struggled with the lack of a menu and the language barrier, as we do not speak Spanish.
- Anuja (9/5): - The view from our room was awesome!!!! Be ready for a 4 wheel drive vehicle as the road to the hotel is gravelled and very steep.
- Dietmar (8/5): -
- Roger (10/5): - Excelente vista

- Carlos (7/5): We had a good stay. - The hotel had an amazing view, breakfast and meals were excellent. The staff was kind. The rooms could be updated, and more pillows provided.
- Cedric (9/5): A wonderful experience. - The view of the Arenal volcano and surrounding forest was spectacular. We had no Spanish at all, but the family made every effort to welcome and look after us, cook food that we liked (including the amazing banana pancake!). My daughter and theirs played happily with the family dog. The lodge is just a few minutes from the Santa Elena cloud forest reserve. Our stay was everything we could have wished. Balancing hot and cold water in the shower was a challenge - but we didn't come for the shower!
- Norbert (8/5): Spectacular view of the volcano ! - Location ! What a view of the Arenal volcano Besides the view not much to offer.
- Harry (8/5): Ideal to get away from being "busy" - Location and staff are just stellar There is an issue with hot water to take a shower. You have to play with the pressure to be able to get the right temperature. This is understandable considering that their source of electricity comes from their own hydroelectric pump on the river.
- David (10/5): Best volcano & lake View at the Cloud forest - Fantastic view. The property has its own trial into the cloud forest which was for free. Their food is clean and home grown, delicious.
- Dumitru (7/5): Good - Great staff No hot water
- Bastian (10/5): Estupendo!! - It was absolutely amazing. There was everything you need, a super kind host and team. They even had their own little assistant (super kind dog) Nothing really bad, but be mindful that the road the the property is a little rocky and unpaved so you want to have at least a good tires
- Tracy (10/5): You need to stay here especially if you are going to the cloud forrest! - The staff waited iup for us we arrived very late! The breakfast was amazing home made yummy. The room was not lluxurious but large and clean wiht great views!! We to absolutly reccomend VistaVerde Lodge!
- Renzo (6/5): great potential with different management - the guy at the desk was really nice despite he didint speak english. we fell very sorry for him. but at the end he was the only that made an effort to make our stay pleasant . room were nice with an amazing view but too much works construction around it feel none taking really care of the hotel
A plus was they call me back when i left my phone and my shirt in the room after the check out, i really appreciate the honesty. food not really good and little too expensive for the quality. not very good to see towels, bed cover and more throw in the garden...feel dirty.
- Dave (9/5): An authentic very reasonably priced stay in a beautiful location with warm welcoming hosts. - It is in a beautiful location. The accomodation is basic but has everything you need. If you want WiFi and TV it’s not for you. But the views and being in the clouds more than makes up for that. The food is really nice and the people who own and run this are lovely. We enjoyed our stay here immensely.
- Karen (10/5): excellent - view and hot water for shower It was a tough drive…..but beautiful!
- Alejandro (7/5): Good -
- Mark (6/5): A charming and welcoming place, but a few key improvements (heating and in-room amenities) needed - A wonderful, welcoming host who went out of his way to help us—even coming to our rescue when we ran out of gas on the way up!
Once you arrive, it’s a great place to stay, with a lovely setting in the cloud forest.
The owner and his family are clearly working hard to make improvements, and their passion shows. Difficult to find, and the road leading up to the lodge was quite rough.
The wind rattled through the bathroom and windows significantly, making it feel less secure and comfortable.
No heating in the room, which was a major issue given the cloud forest location. The humidity made all our clothes damp, and some form of heating is really needed. It was cold and humid and the wind whistled through the windows.
No coffee-making facilities in the room—this would have been a big improvement.
- Lauren (10/5): Exceptional - The food was amazing - everything was very fresh and sourced from the garden or surrounding areas. We were able to go for a run on the road by the property and it was beautiful and felt very safe. The staff were very friendly and the views were beautiful. The was a very friendly dog there was well!
- Vladimir (7/5): Good value - Clean, good view, very good and friendly people Remote location and can be foggy
- Danielle (4/5): Not worth it. Would not recommend - the views were spectacular. Not enough hot water for a quick shower. No heat. Beds and pillows not comfortable. No radio or tv to mask the neighbors being intimate. When arriving at night, the outdoor lighting is very poor. Otherwise, the views were spectacular.
- Juan (9/5): Lovely stay - Beautiful location with great views. Family owned by a lovely family who is really helpful. Breakfast and dinner were good. Very close to Selvatura. Lots of humidity in the bathroom
- Karim (9/5): Superb -
- Christian (9/5): Superb - Super friendly staff. There was also a very cute dog and a cool cat hanging around the property. The hotel has a spectacular view and feels extremely well made. Like very quality construction. Everything is solid wood. Not a huge deal because of the location, but I don't think the room had air conditioning. I'm sure this was in the ad and I just missed it. Also, there is a light on the porch outside the room #1 that comes in through one of the windows and is kind of bright at night.
- A (9/5): Superb - Everyone was very genuinely nice and accommodating. We had breakfast and dinner at the lodge everyday during our stay and it was farm to table style fresh and delicious. Unfortunately we couldn’t see the mountain view due to the weather but the stay made every moment unforgettable.
- Martin (9/5): Superb -
- Renaud (10/5): Comfy and nice rooms with a wonderful view, in a magic place -
- Dzmitry (10/5): Exceptional - Our one night stay at Vista Verde Lodge was excellent from the very first to the very last minute. Even though we checked in one hour later than expected, the owner met and greeted us right when we just arrived. He checked us in, offered tea/coffee and showed us our room. The room was spotlessly clean and had everything that we needed. There was no hair dryer in the room, but the owner provided it to us as soon as we asked. The next morning started with an incredible view of the volcano and the surroundings. After that we enjoyed a delicious breakfast (highly recommend banana pancakes) and we were ready to continue our journey but we met the owner's young daughter and their adorable dog Pelusa and spent some great time playing with them. Overall the location, the service, and the place was outstanding. We highly recommend the Vista Verde Lodge. Nothing
- Sebastian (10/5): Exceptional - Location.
- Sabina (10/5): The stay overall was great! - Staff was great Nobody’s fault that we came in a rainy season but rooms definitely need some drying system like fans at least.
- Ourania (7/5): Good -
- Clayton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Monica (8/5): Stunning location - Fantastic views and location Very difficult to get to . Road very bad. Not enough signs.
- Sebastian (6/5): Really pretty views - Good NA
- Daniel (9/5): Superb -
- Matthew (10/5): Great location with a beautiful view, but have.a car. - The meals were excellent. There was little or no hot water. Hot water in the shower lasted 30 seconds. The hotel could use a daily shuttle service to Santa Elena, otherwise taxi service costs about $45 a day back and forth.
- Iwona (9/5): Best view in Monteverde - Best view of the Arenal Volcano.
We stayed 3 nights, but 2 would be enough. We visited ecological reserve and Selvatura Park. The host served delicious breakfasts. We also ate dinners at the lodge. It was a very tasty local food with great presentation. The host, Eulogio, recommended a hike to the falls on the property, and we followed his advice. It took us about 1 hour to complete the hike and see the falls. It was very cold at night. The room needs a heater or warmer duvet.
The road from town to the lodge was very bumpy. But most of the roads in Costa Rica are.
- Christie (8/5): Nice staff, clean rooms, great banana pancakes! - Breakfast was excellent! Especially the banana pancakes! WOW! Location was pretty far out of town, maybe 15 minutes or so. Grounds looked pretty but it was cold while we were there so we did not explore the farm.
- Andrea (8/5): Lovely - The staff is super nice and the food delicious. The view is really nice and we dis have a really peaceful stay, we really enjoyed it, it is worth the extra drive from downtown. Tips: we drove there from La Fortuna in a car and managed it well (though super slowly) but if you’re driving in the rainy season half of the way will probably require an SUV and even a 4x4. In the dry season a car worked for us.
Try the banana pancake, it’s delicious for breakfast.
- Cris (8/5): Family run establishment. Very accommodating. Beds comfortable. - Great family run hotel. Beautiful scenery. Path to waterfall dangerous.
- Nandhini (4/5): Very mediocre - The staff was friendly and the breakfast was good. The view from the back of the property was gorgeous. The room we stayed in, had a bathroom that would not drain. One of our tour party members showered, not knowing this, which created a small lake of water in the shower that almost flooded into our room as well. very unpleasant and disappointing
- Rieca (10/5): Hospitality at its best beautiful rustic accommodations - Breakfast was made to order several choices each morning. The staff bent over backwards to accommodate us when we arrived after restaurant was closed. They made us full meals for a family of 4 and was much appreciated.
The only thing is I would recommend going in daylight as the roads in this area are difficult in the dark. Perhaps consider 4x4, or at least not a low car.
- Page (9/5): The views are amazing and the staff super friendly. Dinner was delicious. I'd recommend it to anyon - The views are amazing. I stayed in #16, the end unit. I woke up to the sunrise over the mountains and a view of Volcano Arenal. The grounds were full of beautifully, bright colored flowers. I took the time to hike their private trail to the waterfall and was rewarded by hummingbirds and other birds. I would definitely recommend this place.
- Neill (4/5): A view and nothing else - The location was wonderful for the views ( but meant you were far away from restaurants). The owner/ manager was lovely The room we had was so noisy- could hear family upstairs banging around and every word they said ( and I have a hearing difficulty). The food was awful, bland and hugely expensive for what it was and the woman serving was very curt and miserable. There was nowhere comfortable to sit and enjoy the incredible views. The toilet smelled awful and the dining room had no ambience whatsoever. I really don’t understand the glowing reviews. That said, the owner was very helpful with another family, giving them a lift up to Selvatura Park, which was kind of him.
- Mara (9/5): Superb - Great food, beautiful views and it is fun to explore trails from the property.
- Richard (10/5): Lovely stay, good people, great views. - The views were spectacular. Could see the Arenal Volcano across the valley and could watch the clouds rolling through day and night. One of the best views we've had anywhere. The place was very pleasantly quiet near a town that is quite busy. There were lovely walks on grounds and the neighboring road. Staff was thorough, pleasant, accessible and accommodating. We had dinner there a few times as well. Food was quite good. Give the place 10 stars. I generally don't bother writing reviews but this definitely a place to share! Oh, and they grow and harvest their own coffee!! Liked everything
- Belhadj (9/5): Head in the clouds - Great stay
Space of the room
Breakfast
Staff
View A little bit far from the city
Need a car next time
- Lisa (8/5): Special Place if Right Circumstances. - Staff was amazing and value for money was good. Weather made power outages and we were cold and damp, even inside rooms, which made for a difficult stay. Lack of hot water sealed the deal for our inability to give Vista Verde Lodge, the highest rating.
- Donna (7/5): Pura Vida - Amazing views, great staff, excellent food and a beautiful waterfall well worth the hike. The drive in was a little challenging however worth the effort.
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pavla (4/5): I would recommend to promote this place as depandable on a weather as you can experince a total fog over all days of you - breakfast a wet room and all things in my luggage from always foggy and windy weather
- Karsten (5/5): It's all about the view - and therefore a gamble. - If the weather is nice, this lodge probably has a great view! We were unlucky throughout our 3 day stay. If it is raining, this accommodation can get very uncomfortable.
We had dinner twice. Once it was good, the second time rather poor.
Hot water couldn't be used several times.
- James (7/5): Good - Great location and view, nice waterfall nearby and very friendly staff/owner Its a 20 minute drive on a horribly bumpy dirt road with potholes from Santa Elena town.
I only saw the view once, it was too cloudy to see much the view in the morning.
Prices at the lodge seemed expensive, $50 for two dinners, two beers and a small amount of laundry.
- Katerina (10/5): Family adventure on the top of the mountain in the clouds - Rustic feeling No idea
- Krishjanthan (9/5): Would totally recommend to stay here!!! - The staff was very friendly. The dinner was excellent and the breakfast too!!
The view is amazing!!! Wish they added some more outdoor seating/ chairs to enjoy the view
- Rick (8/5): Magical place, fair price, good staff, just hard to reach. - Best coffee of our entire trip
The staff were very friendly
Great breakfast
Fantastic views - we could see some wildlife from our room!
There's a cool trail leading down to a waterfall, we recommend a moderate level of fitness for the way back up!
There was a dog named Rocky who greeted us when we arrived and spent some time with us every day, he's so friendly! - I miss him! He was the best boy!!
We also had a cat visit our room every evening for cuddles! No idea where he came from, but he was very welcome. There is only one proper negative about the place, and that's the road to get there.
Honestly I do not recommend driving, the roads in Monteverde are already not great, but the road to reach this place is particularly bad. We drove our rental and had to drive very slowly for about 5 kilometres.
It's of no fault of the accommodation but I think any visitor should be made aware of this prior to booking!
Be aware the roads to Drake Bay are the only ones worse than Monteverde.
