Guest Reviews
- Armand (8/5): Great little house - The location is much better than central Dunedin especially if you enjoy driving up and down twisty roads. There's a great garden/hill you can also go to behind the house. There's one undersized AC unit for the whole house.
The bathroom is also quite lacking.
- Marloes71 (10/5): - Debbie and Dave made our stay very comfortable. Good beds and a good couch to sit on. Sitting outside with a view was amazing. -
- Lou (9/5): Overall, although is was further away from town than what we expected we had a most enjoyable experi - The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very well provisioned. The views from the surroundings were spectacular. It was a bit further from the main town and quite a steep road climb.

- Tom (10/5): Beautifully set up & situated property, with incredibly friendly and helpful hosts. -
- barbara (10/5): - Amazing surprising beautiful setting
- MING (10/5): -
- Faith (9/5): I felt I was a very valued guest. Attention was given to every detail - Spotlessly clean, very comfortable beds, thought given to everything. Excellent vistas from the top of the hill.

- Sarahbella82 (10/5): - The cottage was so beautiful, cosy, comfortable and clean. Everything you can think of is available and Debbie and Dave add personal touches (such as homemade stewed fruit or free range eggs from their chickens) which are so lovely. They live in the most AMAZING location, the best of both land and sea..... Living the dream. You can walk around the property and see the most spectacular views. It has been our favourite accommodation on the South Island so far and will definitely be back! There is nothing not to like.
- Neil & Glenys (10/5): - We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Pukemara Retreat. The location was perfect as we didn't want to stay in the city and the peacefulness and views were what we wanted. Very tidy, clean and warm.
- Martin (10/5): Tranquil and beautiful - The location was amazing and it was very well equipped
- Len (7/5): -
- Daniel (10/5): Tranquil and quiet. Great location for exploring the peninsula. - Some great extras including chocolate and marshmellows!
- Barbara (10/5): Cute Cottage - Cute little cottage lost in the countryside but close to attractions of the peninsula. Kitchen is well stocked to make simple meals, and VERY well stocked with breakfast foods including fresh eggs, bread, butter and various spreads. Beds are very comfy and we stayed warm despite some very windy weather. The nearby little town of Portobello has 2 solid restaurants and a cafe. We didn’t want to drive in the dark so we got take out from town one night. I had thought there was a washing machine, but there isn’t. Just a heads up to anyone expecting there to be one.
- Glen (10/5): Perfect country getaway - Perfect place for a peaceful retreat. Lots of walking and bird watching The bathroom sink was awkward but doable.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Perfect stay on the Otago Penninsula! - This is a comfortable and quiet cottage with lovely views and kind hosts. If you want tranquility and to be out on the Penninsula and away from the city then this is the perfect place. It was just what our family of 3 was seeking. We enjoyed the fresh eggs and the stewed rhubarb and apples - delicious on oats, yogurt or toast! We liked everything thing.
- Douglas (9/5): Superb - Great location to visit the wild beaches of Otago peninsula. On site there was a lovely walk, on mown grass, up to a hill with a beautiful view. Good breakfast provisions. It could be windy, but the house was warm.
- Jill (10/5): Exceptional - Everything! Great hosts, lovely accommodation, peaceful location, delicious breakfast - even the weather was wonderful! Thanks for a lovely stay Nothing
- Brian (9/5): Wonderful stay - Debbie & Dave supplied a great selection of cereals, spreads, coffee, tea etc. and eggs freshly laid by their own chickens. There was also a container of delicious stewed rhubarb and apple. While there we visited Allan’s Beach where there were lots of sea lions and we went on an organised trip to see the Blue Penguins which was wonderful. The cottage is very remote and when we arrived on a Monday evening we couldn’t find a restaurant that was open in the vicinity (most restaurants in that area close on a Monday).
- Katherine (10/5): Peaceful and comfortable - The location is really peaceful and the cottage was very comfortable.
Little extras for breakfast like fresh eggs and some stewed fruit.
- Roger (10/5): Beautiful area, fantastic peaceful retreat. - It was almost at the end of the Otago peninsula. The views were stunning and Dave had mowed all the way up to the top of the hill behind the property so that it was easy to walk up there. Cows came to stare at us but they were behind a fence. I loved that. There were also 4 chickens and Debbie had given us some of their eggs for breakfast. The breakfast was good and there were lots of extras including a lovely stewed rhubarb and apple dessert. Debbie and Dave also kindly lent us stuff to clean the car with after we had been to albatross sanctuary.. absolutely loved this property It was great!
- Brenda (10/5): Serene spot on otago peninsula - Debbie and Dave are hosts committed to an amazing guest stay. We were greeted with a warm smile and friendly handshake and offered a comfy cottage for our 3-day stay. Beds were very comfortable, and the kitchen stocked with many extras. The quiet solitude and the great views were the cherry on top. Ty
- Hodgson (10/5): Idyllic retreat on the spectacular Otago Penninsula - Idyllic hideaway amongst amazing scenery, we could not recommend Pukemaea Retreat highly enough.
Debbie was extremely friendly and helpful.
The bed was very comfy. We slept so well.
Extremely well equipped, every creature comfort had been thought of.
Breakfast provision was plentiful and quality.
Beautiful spot, and the owners have lovingly enticed guests to make the short walk up to the viewpoint by mowing a track in the lawn.. Views are breathtaking: 360 degrees of heaven all around the penninsula.
Local beaches are stunning with beautiful white sands and plenty of sea lions.
Don't hesitate to book, you'll love it! Nothing
- Benjaminpayet (10/5): Superbe lodge - Super cosy lodge with great view. Try it, you'll love it!
- Nancy (10/5): A very comfortable country retreat with excellent hosts. - The breakfast supplied was excellent (left in the cottage). The fresh eggs were delicious, and our host had made some dessert for us. The kitchen was well stocked with everything that could be needed. The hosts were very kind and helpful with information about the surrounding area. The bedrooms are a bit small, so there is no space to put things away. Perhaps some shelving could be put up in the kitchen, and a very small chest of drawers in the bedrooms if it would fit.
- Therese (10/5): A wonderful experience - would love to go back. - A great getaway. We arrived after unusual flooding in Dunedin, blocking the regular access road. The hosts went out of their way to assist us, driving 20 mins along an alternative route to meet us and guide us to the property - truly exceptional service. Wonderful views and a restful time. Everything was fine.
- Emma (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful location, facilities and a wonderfully warm home for 2 days. Nothing!
- Shannon (10/5): Exceptional - Very cosy and comfortable. Hosts were very thoughtful, good breakfast selection and chocolates and marshmallows were a lovely touch. Loved our stay here! Everything was great.
- Jcb (10/5): Most enjoyable stay - Very quiet, semi rural, great views from the top of the hill. Nothing
- Kate (10/5): Amazing view, in a rural setting - Everything you could possibly need, well thought out, the view from behind the property was amazing, family friendly, host went the extra mile I love a shower with good pressure so for me that was the only slight downfall... a minor thing and definitely not worth marking down on.
- Valeri (10/5): Exceptional - The cottage was very clean and new, it had everything (and more) we hoped for. We got a rich breakfast and variety of beverage (coffee, tea, chocolate...). Also we loved seeing board games in the house, considering you're in the middle of the nature it's perfect if you decide to do a night in. The best part is the lookout, 10 mins walk from the cottage, AMAZING view and if you're adventurous you'll love the wind too!
It was a great experience!
- Desiree (10/5): Exceptional - Such an incredible location. We'll thought through accommodation at an affordable price and with lovely hosts. Highly recommend.
