Guest Reviews
- Valerie (10/5): Highly recommend a stay here. - Friendly hosts, beautiful grounds, comfortable bed, delicious full Irish breakfast. Steven even made dinner reservations at local restaurant for us! Interesting history of the home as well. Dining room is full of great paintings of previous owners. Fun to take it all in. There are a lot of pictures and trinkets and much to take in, if that isn’t your thing you might find it a bit overwhelming but it was still a lovely place to stay.

- John (8/5): - Amazingly characterful house with friendly hosts and a relaxing atmosphere
- Carol Ann (8/5): - The room was quite large, and the king sized bed was comfy. Breakfast was very nice. And we enjoyed learning about the inn's incredible history going back to 17th century. Fridge in room was a bonus. And being able to connect to our Netflix account was great. The air purifier was appreciated. There was a very dusty smell. Lots of silk and plastic flowers, heavy draperies and tapestries that perhaps need to be either removed or steam cleaned?
- John (2/5): Accommodation like no other we have experienced ! - The friendliness of co-host June.
Breakfast
Comfortable bed. The Master bedroom was shabby. Attention to minor redecoration was laughable.
Attempts to improve the bathroom decor reflected a lack of care, thought and DIY skill. Totally uninviting !
Cobwebs above bed.
Rucked up carpet in poorly lit anti room.
- Alex (9/5): Wonderful, educational. Took me back to a different time. - The place takes you into another era, and invites you to participate in the world that a family has inhabited for 200 years. The place is full of treasures, inside and out of the house, complete with castle ruins in the background.
Breakfast was served in an amazing room, and was full Irish breakfast.
The room has the modern conveniences but all the old windows with shutters, the door lock.
June is a wonderful host, and is like a guide to the world that she is warmly opening up to the world to share a piece of history. Some mustiness.
- michael (10/5): - The most comfortable bed we have ever experienced, the breakfast was superb served with style .
The hosts were friendly, helpfull and very informative about the area
- Martens (9/5): - Rustic house, beautiful grounds complete with a historic castle. The breakfast room was interesting and ornate.
- Raymond (10/5): Thank you so much June and Stephen for your hospitality - the legendary breakfast did not disappoint. All the best Ray a - Beautiful stately home - a real treasure. - Dunne (10/5): - Beautiful historical property with beautiful grounds. On our "will repeat" list !
- Dan (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful setting lovely gardens absolutely perfect hosts couldn't do enough for me.
- Frances (8/5): A country manor house - This manor house obviously has a long history of hospitality. The welcome was warm. The breakfast was delicious and served in the grand dining room at a shared long table. Whilst the plumbing is ancient, it was adequate. The pillows could do with an update.
- Fiona (9/5): Beautiful historic house in a fabulous setting with friendly owners - Great location as we were visiting for the Open Golf event at Port Rush.
Super interesting house with so much history. Loved the walled gardens and the ruined castle in the grounds.
Beautifully laid breakfast table with breakfast cooked to order.
Very helpful with advice before our arrival. We couldn't access the wifi network from our room although it was available downstairs.
Also couldn't get the TV to work. No instructions around.
- Sandra (10/5): Absolutely amazing would definitely love to stay again. - What a charming place to stay full of History ,June and Stephen were the perfect hosts. There was nothing to dislike
- Ágnes (8/5): Very good -
- Sandra (6/5): Pleasant -
- Colin (9/5): Ballylough House - Ballylough House is unique accomodation in Bushmills. It was a privilege to stay in a home steeped in history surrounded by picturesque grounds. The owners care about their guests & the quality of their stay. Breakfast was a good start to each day. The room was quiet, spacious and clean with a very comfortable bed. We highly recommend staying at Ballylough House.
- Catharina (10/5): Loved every minute of our stay here! - This property is amazing…..the house is steeped in some great history. And the gardens are lovely and of course the ruins of the castle that originated in the 1300’s, it all adds to a great experience. Also the breakfast was delicious and plentiful!! Our hosts June and Stephen were terrific and very hospitable.
Wish we could have stayed an extra night, beautiful area to explore more hopefully some other time!
- Scott (9/5): Great, quiet and relaxing B&B run by Steve & June. - Lovely old country house on a large estate with gardens and remnants of a small castle. Large bedrooms with comfortable bed. The breakfast is extensive with plenty of options (continental and full Irish). Very quiet and serene setting, and only 1 mile from Bushmills village with the distillery, and less than 3 miles to the coast, Giant's Causeway, and Dunluce Castle. Steve & June are friendly and kind people who run the place. There was nothing not to like.
- Mcmullin (9/5): Fascinating history - It has such a fascinating history and interesting historical buildings to see. We were rather early in the season,, so it was a bit cold, and the bed was not as comfortable as we might have hoped, particularly for my wife's back issues.
- Craig (10/5): Excellent - Great place to stay, very helpful and accommodating with late arrival time. Lovely breakfast and would recommend
- Alison (4/5): Disappointing -
- Jana (4/5): Disappointing - Our host was friendly, accommodating and energetic. The location is good, historic and interesting. The traditional Irish breakfast was good. We felt pressured by our hosts before our arrival to be there at a time that was earlier than they previously stated. We received multiple texts and a call before arriving. The first thing we noticed on entering the house was a musty smell and it was dark. The wifi is wobbly. Our room was quite cold when we arrived, but they did turn it on upon request. Our host quickly fixed a lamp that was initially not working. The shower worked well.
- Massan (6/5): Pleasant -
- Chamberlain (9/5): Interesting and comfortable stay. - Great house with a fascinating family history. It is full of interesting 'art and objects' and has lovely grounds to explore. Very quiet peaceful location but easily accessible and a great base from which to explore the local area. We had a big room with a comfortable bed and the breakfast was excellent. Lovely hosts would recommend. n/a
- Colette (10/5): Exceptional - A very peaceful and charming residence in the countryside and close to Bushmills village.
The hospitality was excellent, delicious breakfast and very comfortable room and bed.
Relaxed atmosphere, interesting history to the property and lush garden.
- Gavin (10/5): Exceptional - It is a wonderful historic building and grounds. The hosts were so friendly and helpful with local knowledge. We will be back next year.
- Moira (8/5): Perfect location. For a delightful stay in Bushmills. - Fabulous to Perry. Amazing history & gardens. Small bed. Expect to have a king size or larger nowadays.
- Barry (9/5): Stepping back to the early 1900s - Lovely Weather
- Ann (10/5): Home from home - Very good Breakfast, lovely unique room, great atmosphere, peaceful restful location We weren't able to stay longer
- Hal (9/5): Ballylough House is a beautiful place, full of character and interest! - The breakfasts were superb, and beautifully presented. We might have been able to stay longer; we loved Ballylough House!
- J (7/5): Good - The host was absolutely fantastic, going above and beyond to ensure that guests feel welcome and comfortable. The house itself is steeped in history, adding a unique and fascinating element to the stay. I believe there is room for improvement in terms of cleanliness. Ensuring that all areas are thoroughly cleaned would greatly enhance the overall experience for future guests.
- Anne (9/5): Superb - The property was beautiful and in a perfect location
Breakfast excellent and hosts were helpful and made sure we had a great stay Nothing
- Gregg (10/5): A remarkable country home with thoughtful hosts and SUPERB breakfasts! - Breakfast was OUTSTANDING….beautiful place settings in a stunning dinning room. June and Steve have thought of everything and cooked breakfast is delicious…set us up for the day. The family home and grounds are grand, approached down their private lane…situated only a few miles outside of Bushmill…a super location in close proximity to all sites along the Causeway Coast. We had not a shred of disappointment.
Just to say, this is an older family house and so guests may need to wait a bit for hot water to hit the taps… but the accommodation is so comfortable…and we loved the sense of family history and the country setting.
- Paul (8/5): Ballylough House was in a beautiful setting, with a rich history and very comfortable. - We had a lovely stay at Ballyough House and our hosts where lovely. N/A
- Claria (10/5): My family and I enjoyed our stay! Our hosts were so warm and welcoming and accommodating! - we loved the history about the property! our cozy rooms and the delicious breakfast. hosts were so helpful and the location is close to most Northern Ireland sightseeing locations. There wasn’t anything that we didn’t like! great place!
- Janice (10/5): Beautiful house with warm welcoming hosts. A few more days in such a relaxing environment would have - Loved the house and it’s ancestral decor. Very homely. Breakfast was great starting with a beautiful fresh fruit salad. The traditional Irish breakfast was good too- cooked nicely and sensible portions. Lots of bread options available too. The room was very big and had a huge double bed. Lovely architecture and furniture and lots of curiosities to peruse. Not much - it was near perfect.
- Aleksandra (1/5): Bad - The owner was an aggressive man who was shouting at us. I feared for my safety! Absolutely NOT RECOMMENDED! We booked a room with a private bathroom - yet the owner failed to mention that the bathroom was outside the room and was used also by another person. Horrible experience, I do not recommend it at all. We were thrown out of the place because we did not checkin on time - nightmare!
- Mary (8/5): enjoyable stay - excellent breakfast
friendly, helpful hosts Just a little too far away from town which meant had to drive everywhere
- Mcdonnell (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed here for two nights in August and we absolutely fell in love with the place! The house is beautiful, our hosts were warm and helpful, the location is peaceful and we slept well each night. It's also very ideally located for exploring the North coast. We will be back!
- Rahamin (10/5): It was great experience. Love everything - Wonderful place. Amazing room and great experience. Breakfast was good the garden was amazing
- Taimoon (8/5): It was good but I notice that when I am the primary booking person and add a friend with a second room, all messages com - Interesting because it is a centuries old manor house passed down through a single family for more than a century. And lovely grounds and interesting castle ruin with history
- Jacquelyn (10/5): Exceptional - Loved staying here!! What a great home and location! June was so welcoming and did so much to accommodate our early departure time and helped us find someone to repair our rental car that had an issue. Lovely stay! Looking forward to staying here again on future trips!!!
- Lynda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (8/5): Comfortable night and a great breakfast - Very quirky and staff really helpful It was a little out of the way.
- Kevin (8/5): Very good - Exceptional breakfast.
Very large room.
Friendly welcome on arrival Access to bathroom was awkward
- Malachi (10/5): Friendly and comfortable. - An old house with history and character. Splendid grounds. Nothing to do with the house but when we went into Bushmills for a meal the police wouldn’t let us leave the town Neil a long loyalist band parade had passed. If you are visiting Bushmills it’s best to ask hotels and restaurants if there is a parade planned for that night.
- David (9/5): Superb -
- John (10/5): Perfection - Breakfast was perfect , location was just right Nothing
- Vanessa (10/5): We were treated like family. June and Steve were lovely accommodating knowledgeable hosts. The property and the grounds - The history and the grounds were amazing! Fantastic hosts. The house was like staying in a museum or art gallery. Full of interest. Really comfy room and generous delicious breakfast.
- Cuomu (9/5): Enjoyable stay. - The estate is great, full of history. Big plus of having a castle ruin on the ground with connection to game of throne (we’re both fans!). Very quiet surroundings - brilliant for light sleepers. Breakfast was great too - dining room is nicely set up. Hot water took a while to work in the shower but as it’s an old property it’s understandable
- Jean (9/5): Superb -
- Marie (10/5): The perfect place to be convenient to the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills Distillery without the inconvenience of too man - The location and setting. A beautiful quiet haven away from the crowds queuing up to see the Giant’s Causeway. Being so close gave us the opportunity - advised by our hosts - to visit the Causeway in the evenings when it is much quieter. The breakfasts were also excellent with fresh fruit daily and any version of the Irish breakfast we wished for! The house is old and delightfully quirky. The window in our bedroom for instance reached to the floor - a bit disconcerting for a sash window! Beautiful views and stunning gardens surround it - including an ancient castle ruin. The hosts also recommended three good restaurants nearby, the Bayview at Portballintrae and the Tartine and Bushmills Inn in Bushmills. Nothing really except I do prefer the use of a bath to a shower though. Although I was offered the use of the family bathroom, I did not feel comfortable availing of this. The water pressure left a little to be desired too. However, these are small things in the overall scheme of things.
- Colette (5/5): Beautiful outside, but smelly in the room. - the location was lovely and the host was very nice our room (master suite) had a very bad odor. I understand the house is 200 years old, but it really smelled bad. so much so that we could not enjoy our stay, stayed out very late and left very early skipping the breakfast. additionally the bathroom was very weird, and the small trinket boxes in the room have baby teeth in them which totally weirded me out!
- Tracy (10/5): A delightful place for lovers of history and antiques - Our hosts were very welcoming and we enjoyed having time to chat with them to hear more about their home. Breakfast was served in the dining room and it was both delicious and a unique part of our stay. The dining room has so much history, including oil portraits of past family members and the view of the castle through the window was perfect. We took a stroll around the property and enjoyed the atmosphere of the centuries-old grounds. I wish I had allotted more time to read the book they shared and hear more history. Two thoughts after reading other reviews and staying at Ballylough House: it's helpful to understand this home / B&B is centuries old, which means pipes, lighting, etc., clearly had to be retrofitted to provide modern conveniences to vacationers (hot water was perfectly fine for us). Also, some of the furnishings are family antiques / period pieces from past generations. It all added to the charm and uniqueness of our stay.
- Dominic (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast outstanding and the grounds were like visiting a personalized local attraction. That we could not stay longer.
- Christopher (8/5): Absolutely charming made all the better by engaging hosts - Loved the sense of history and tradition. I almost felt like an intruder into the lives of the hosts, with this charming insight into how past meets present Nothing
- Eileen (3/5): Poor -
- John (9/5): Why stay in a dull hotel when you can stay in a beautiful old house bursting with character? - This is an excellent base from which to explore the area around the Giant's Causeway. It is extremely peaceful. June and Stevie were friendly hosts who were anxious to please. The house is an impressive old building approached from a very long drive. The gardens around the house were a delight to walk around. This will probably be the closest that I'll get to staying in a stately home.
We had good breakfasts in a magnificent dining room. There was the usual choice of a cooked breakfast including whatever we liked, mushrooms, tomatoes, eggs, bacon, sausages, black pudding, white pudding etc or granola and toast. The WiFi worked well. The large bedroom was very comfortable. The plumbing could have been better (shower had to run for 3 mins to get hot) but this is a beautiful old house and such things are to be expected. The lights around the bed were not well placed for bedtime reading.
- Moriarty (9/5): A wonderful experience in a stunning historic home. Our hostess was delightful! - Beautiful home and extremely friendly hostess and host! Quiet, gorgeous setting! And a very delicious breakfast in the morning!
- Harold (8/5): Charming hosts. Excellent food. Comfortable accommodation. - The breakfast was excellent.
- Brooklyn (8/5): Very good -
- Scott-moncrieff (10/5): Loved the heritage and old school atmosphere of the accommodation. Also enjoyed the amazing full on breakfast provided. - Loved the heritage and charm of the house, property and rooms. Nothing.
- Kevin (9/5): A pleasure - Breakfast was outstanding, the public areas were comfortable and charming and the room was delightful. We will certainly return here on our next visit.
- Micheal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marc (10/5): if you value charm and character in your stays, this place is highly recommended! Nothing else in Ireland compared to i - this place has so much character it’s hard to put into words. it’s like staying in a movie set from your favorite period movie! hot water is limited
- Georgina (10/5): Beautiful quiet and comfortable place to stay - Very interesting historic house with spacious light-filled rooms and super comfy bed. Had delicious breakfast in large elegant dining room with beautifully laid up table. June was an excellent host and a mine of information on the
surrounding area, genealogy and all the rest. Could have chatted for ages on our respective family histories!
- Gary (9/5): Superb -
- Jeanette (10/5): Beautiful house, lovely host. - June, our host, was so lovely. Immediately we met her I felt I was with an old friend. The house is beautiful, historic, and perfectly located to explore Northern Ireland - we wanted to visit the NI coast and Giant's Causeway on our way between Scotland and our home in ROI and Ballylough House was perfectly situated. I found the shower hard to use - perks of an old house meant it took a while to adjust to temperature, but honestly, that was such a tiny thing compared to the loveliness of it all!
- Jens (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ruth (8/5): Stunning period home relaxed atmosphere comfy bed and excellent breakfastnt - Dinned like royalty in the stunning dining room the food was excellent Electrical socket a bit far away from mirror
- Debra (9/5): This is a lovely and historic property with wonderful hosts. - It is a beautiful property and large. I love to walk and there is a heritage trail on the grounds, plus country lanes.
- Jeffrey (9/5): Superb -
- Riscoe (10/5): hidden treasure to share very romantic - out of this world surprise lovely grounds great location nothing
