Guest Reviews
- Richard (8/5): Good walking hotel - Good location for walking. Excellent buffet breakfast. 4 or 5 choices for each course in the evening. Tea making in the room. Free parking. Terrible view of the back of the kitchen from our room 117. We're used to a wider bed. Old building going back to the 15th century so it creaks a bit, which is good and bad.
- Christine (4/5): The hotel is in an excellent location and the staff wete very helpful. I was a bit surprised to be c - Breakfast was just average. Cheap ingredients. The public areas like the hallway and staird were in poor condition. Old chipped paintwork and dirty carpets.
- Armstrong (8/5): Really nice and the breakfast was amazing - Found it easy, staff were lovely and welcomed my little dog The only thing was I could have done with a ground floor, so I could take my little dog out easier. I was up three flights of stairs
- Margaret (3/5): We left early. Didn’t stay overnight. We do not recommend this hotel. Staff were pleasant. - Nothing. A very tired looking hotel. Bedroom was gloomy. Depressing place to stay Poor parking. Loads of potholes and not enough space. We really struggled to find a space.
- Martin (7/5): - Friendly staff
- Karol (9/5): Perfect location and great staff - The staff at the reception desk is very helpful.
- Stephen (6/5): Enjoyed the stay, but this was mainly due to the location and the very good weather we had. - Staff were good and check in was quick and easy. Breakfast was good, although restaurant was very tightly packed. Evening meal was basic but well cooked. Very good location, with plenty of walks and a flat easy 15min walk into town. The hotel seemed to be stuck in the 70's, decoration was tired and poor. Our bedroom was very small, with not a lot of space to get around the bed.

- Travel01940773357 (8/5): Excellent restaurant in ideally situated Hotel. - The hotel is ideally situated for walking or just exploring the Lake District.
Our bedroom was extremely tired and in desperate need of a refurb. Talking to other guests who found the same it was gossip that the owners have put the hotel up for sale which may explain the hotels situation.
That said everywhere was scrupulously clean.
The rooms were very warm, we had to turn down the radiator.
On a massive plus side, the bar is well stocked, and the restaurant produces home cooked food which restores my faith in chefs ability to prepare food for large numbers of people. Every night, a new venue! Hot food, with well thought out menus containing some innovative ideas.
Would I go again....of course!
- Y8915DXphilr (10/5): Nice to find somewhere dog free. - Called in for a pint after a walk. Good range of drinks at a reasonable price. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Best of all a nice clear sign on the door saying no dogs, such a pleasant change. Well done. We will be back.
- Andrew (8/5): Nice hotel - Breakfast was only lukewarm.
- Kevin (9/5): Had a nice stay here and would stay again. - Location was perfect and food was outstanding. Beds need updating and showers too.

The food and accommodation facilities were excellent and superb value for money. The staff were also outstanding in their service and care. We are planning our next visit as soon as possible and have found a true gem of a place. Well done to all

- johnh750 (10/5): Another visit to the Patterdale for us - Yet another stay at the Patterdale for us and it is still fantastic! The staff are amazing and the meals absolutely spot on.
Thank you everyone for looking after us
- Butsy19 (8/5): Great Lunch deals - We stopped by the hotel lounge bar a couple of times while exploring the area, and I have to say, it’s quite a nice spot.
It might not have that modern vibe, but there’s something really cozy about it that makes you feel right at home.
They offer some great lunch deals ( we opted for their soup and sandwich), that won’t break the bank, which is a huge plus when you’re out and about.
It's popular with walkers, which makes sense because it’s a perfect spot to take a break after a long hike, plus, the outdoor seating area at the front is a lovely spot to enjoy a meal or a drink on a nice day.
Overall, if you’re looking for a laid-back place to relax and grab a bite, I’d definitely recommend checking this place out. It’s friendly, affordable, and just feels welcoming!
- andreagI816BC (10/5): Another fabulous stay - Stayed again at this lovely hotel. I think we have been there 53 times! Can't beat it. We met my mum and dad there, mum is in a wheelchair and the staff are so helpful all of the time. Food amazing, 3 course dinner, menu changes daily, room clean. What more could you want.

- Paula (7/5): Fantastic location, great Staff, it was perfect for our needs. - We stayed here for a wedding a day later so location was key. The staff were amazing. Good value for money and it serviced our need. It was a little dated but an excellent hotel.
- Matthew (10/5): -
- Michael (5/5): It was ok for what we needed. - Close to where we wanted to be. Breakfast was good for a day on the mountain. Mattress needs changing. Door wasn’t very secure, you had to put the key in it to pull it close on the way out.
I emailed about some property I left in the room and still no response, 3 days now.
- Paul (8/5): Most enjoyable despite the weather ! - The attitude of all the staff was absolutely outstanding. They are a credit to the organisation.

- 456averild (10/5): Weekend away in our fave place - Just got back today from another brilliant weekend away at The Patterdale . We have been going there for 22 years now twice a year and still absolutely love the place ! The location is amazing , so peaceful and great walks nearby . The staff again were brilliant nothing too much trouble , they are always attentive and special shout out to Mike and Andy at the bar . We love this hotel as it’s so chilled and down to earth and amazing value . Rooms are always clean as is everything else . This hotel is under offer currently and I just hope that the new owners don’t change anything dramatically as everything works as it is . Everyone we spoke to over the weekend love this hotel as it is which is a lovely friendly place which is amazing value in a fantastic location . Please don’t turn it into something it’s not , it’s amazing for walkers and everywhere needs a Patterdale which is home from home !
- 551freyas (10/5): Fantastic value and relaxing stay - Just checked out of the Patterdale hotel which we stayed over the weekend. It far excelled our expectations.great value for money Location excellent and just beautiful. Food lovely . Beds comfortable . The best bit was how lovely helpful and welcoming the staff were from the reception the dinning room staff and bar staff. Entertainment last night was fantastic just what we need after a long walk . Special thanks to Andy and Jay who made our stay . Will be back soon - highly recommend
- Martin (9/5): Last minute booking. - Booked late with no problem. Checked in late at 10pm with no problem. Able to leave the car in the carpark for the day after checkout. Great value.
- Pete Whitcroft NI (8/5): -
- Marie (7/5): Location was very good. Price of lager was expensive. - Good location No shower curtain
Decoration very tired in room
Tv was tiny!
- outandaboutoldies (10/5): A Home from Home. - Have visited regularly since around 2007 and it gets better and better.
A stunning location, very friendly staff and the food is amazing and so well presented.
A special mention to Andy behind a well stocked bar who makes us so welcome, cheers.
From Housekeeping to Chefs, Reception to Restaurant Staff, thank you all for your excellent service.
- Gary (3/5): Old and looking shabby decor. The bar was space not atmosphere at all - Chris in the restaurant was good The staff were rude and did not listen to what we were saying except for Chris in the restaurant.
- Durham (8/5): -
- Bushra (6/5): - Clean
beautiful view
Easy access
Staff were very helpful and friendly specially night staff. Bed size was too mall for 2 people
- Gill (7/5): -
- Phillip (6/5): Excellent location and parking for a hiking trip. - Location, warm room and hotel areas (it was minus 3 outside during my visit), breakfast, all very good. Cleanliness seemed high. Perfect for a hiking weekend. Evening dinner was average. Fantastic parking facilities. My room door was hanging off at the lock side: clearly the door had been forced open recently and not yet restored. Big disappointment was the lack of decent coffee and associated service in the hotel bar area. When I asked for a coffee at the bar after another freezing long hike, I was met with a disapproving look and miserable service from a staff, and informed begrudgingly there was only filter coffee, black. Which to be fair, I don't mind. But heck it seemed like I'd asked for something disgusting or illegal.
- kimrG1137AS (10/5): The Richardsons - Lovely welcoming hotel, reception staff very friendly and helpful. The food is amazing, great choice well presented by the chefs. Restaurant staff are just 100% perfect, nothing is too much trouble for, they truly go above and beyond all lead by the beautiful Andrea and team.
Bar staff again are great, Andy Mike and the other guys are so polite and helpful.
The rooms are spotless, housekeeping does an amazing job in the rooms.
See you All soon xx

The bar man with beard and glasses was very very helpful when it was the cheese and wine tasting afternoon. - Kaza973 (2/5): Never again ! RUDE man in the wrong job !! - Celebrating a friends birthday we called in here for a drink or two on Saturday 30 November. I have to say the bar man dressed in black - I believe he is called Mike is in the wrong job ! What a miserable and extremely RUDE man ! I asked about buses in the area and spoken to like a child who does not listen the first time ! I won’t be returning neither will my friends who were all appalled at the hostile nature of this man ! Shocking 🤷🏻♀️😩
- A9972NLchristined (10/5): Amazing hotel and staff. - We absolutely love this hotel. We have been coming 2 or 3 times a year for years. The atmosphere and location is fantastic. The rooms and the rest of the hotel are immaculate .The staff are exceptional. They remember us and ask about our family. The current maitre d even remembers I have soya milk.I hope the new owners don't change a thing and keep the staff.

- Kumar (10/5): -
- Anthony (7/5): -
- Sally (10/5): - Perfect location for hikes, room was clean, good budget hotel. Would stay again Could do with a few repairs here and there and a lick of paint, other than that very clean hotel
- Claire (8/5): Great Location and good value for money - Location was excellent as you can walk straight out the door and into the hills. Great to see some gluten free options at breakfast, and the double room was a decent size for the price. Breakfast could have been a bit hotter, but it might have been because we came down towards the end of the service. Was great to have a bath - which was one of the main reasons for booking, but it would be useful to state that it isn't full size in the description.
- Bansal (10/5): -
- Simon (8/5): Pat on the back. - A friendly - down to earth - hotel. Fab, friendly and efficient service. The majority of guests were having extended stays and return year-on-year, which speaks for itself! An excellent 3-corse evening meal at a reasonable price. Although dated, my room was clean, warm and comfortable.
- Matt (7/5): Great for a stay if your doing helvelyn - Room size, close to nice pub, close to helvelyn No food when we arrived at 8.30pm, long walk to room, limited parking when hotel is full
- Morris (8/5): -
- MARK (9/5): - Great location, beautiful views, away from the hustle and bustle of the more tourist side of the Lake District. Bed on the small side but apart from that, nothing!
- Marta (8/5): -
- Storyteller796319 (10/5): A great hotel with the best staff. - We stay here regularly and love it. Yes bedrooms need modernising but it wouldn't take much as everything is adequate, best thing would be walk in showers instead of over the bath, especially as many guests are elderly. We return again and again mainly due to the friendly staff who are all brilliant, so friendly and they make you so welcome. Reception, restaurant and bar staff all great. The food, good fresh food and good portions and always consistently super service. Bar prices very reasonable compared with other hotels in the area. We have stayed in many much more expensive hotels but just love coming back to the Patterdale. Great value and will hopefully be returning soon.
- 239erichk (10/5): A Patterdale Treat - I’ve stayed at the Patterdale Hotel several times over recent years with family and friends and it’s always been a treat. Primarily we went for the location - it’s brilliantly placed for access to Grisedale, Glenridding, up to Helvelyn, Place Fell and around Ullswater etc, but the hotel is also a lovely base. It has a decent bar, does good food, has comfortable rooms, the staff are all helpful and friendly, and it all comes at a reasonable price. After my last stay I accidentally left a bag with a sketchbook, watercolours and maps and the staff wrapped it up and send it back to me without any fuss or bother. I definitely recommend this lovely place, hope it never changes…!!
- Becca_hoyle (2/5): NOT GREAT ! - AVOID !!! i am not one to normally write such a bad review but we were really not happy with our stay here and i want to make others aware.
Staff behind the bar and waiting on were really rude when we asked how did we order food, then when it arrived it was slammed on the table
We then went up to the room which was infested with spiders and cobwebs all over the show including the bathroom - the television in the room was the size of a computer screen and it just felt dirty. my partner woke up in the night and we found another 50 spiders had entered the room and were crawling all over
the location is great, but it definitely needs some TLC or at least someone to go round with a vac and actually clean the place
Very disappointed for what we paid for a one night stay
- John (8/5): -
- Denise (8/5): Very enjoyable - Location and scenic views A bit tired
