Guest Reviews
- Teresa (6/5): Disappointing cottage in great location - Location and small garden. Clean. Comfortable bed I would totally endorse Sally's review from March 14th. Though responsive all very impersonal in terms of check in etc. I have never before received access (code) only 10 minutes before I arrived which was quite nerve racking. I have also never been asked to remove my own bedding in a rented cottage except during COVID when that was understandable.
We also had a severe heating problem in exactly the same way as Sally in midMarch. I am now even more annoyed , having read Sally's review, that Charlotte knew about it a month before we arrived but has done nothing. It was very cold whilst we were there. We did not want or know how to use log fire and if the radiators had been the right temperature we would not have needed to. As it was, we put the oven on for additional heat after appeals to Charlotte resulted in no readjustment to the constant 16 or 17 degrees.
Accessibility to the house is v tricky as are the stairs in the house. I felt quite fearful going to the toilet at night from the top floor even though I am pretty mobile and fit for my age.
In warm weather, for young agile people this could be a great find. My friend and myself found it disappointing for the price paid for a booking during the week out of the main season (Whitby seemed full of daytrippers but was very quiet after 5pm)

- Sally (6/5): Pleasant cottage but needs a few tweaks - Great location in the old town which we prefer. Up a side alley, Borough Place with a fair flight of steps but no issues for us.
Small and compact cottage. Wood burner adds to the atmosphere which we had to use daily. I’ll come to that later. Comfy 2 seater sofa and a single armchair with enough room for us as a couple. This room leads up to a small set of stairs to the back door where there is a pretty garden with chairs and some promising plants and roses just shooting out leaves. Going to be lovely I’m sure, when the weather improves.
The kitchen area was adequate and although we didn’t cook, looked like everything there to do so.
Upstairs to first floor, narrow staircase but quirky, led to the double bedroom with good quality bed linen and a small bathroom with shower and toilet.
Another small narrow staircase to an upstairs small twin with a snug area we didn’t use. The twin we used as a dressing room for me.
Nice quality wool blankets on beds. We have sheep ourselves so I was happy to see these. Firstly, I’d like to say this is my honest opinion and please don’t take it as criticism.
The heating is on a hive system and requires several attempts to adjust to warmth. Freezing cold first thing and if you’re out, which we were quite a lot, the heating turns itself off and then you need to adjust the set temperature back up to your desired level. We only needed it up to 20-21 in the morning so not really excessive. It’s adjusted by the owner who obviously decides on how it’s used from afar. The boiler is located in a padlocked cupboard in the snug so you can’t bypass the hive. Upstairs is very cold. We used 3 small bags of logs which you can purchase from the CoOp £8 per bag and kept the upstairs doors open to allow the cottage to warm up.
Also, new mugs might be an idea. At least matching.
There was no dish sponge or cloth wipe to clean up after oneself. There were also previous guests opened items left in the cupboards. Used ground coffee, various opened teas, opened pack of sugar with chilli flakes and other bits and bobs. Used tub of spread in the fridge too. These need to be removed for hygiene reasons. As do the two rugs in the kitchen/sitting room which were stained and had a dirty runner underneath. The floor needed mopping too.
A welcome pack of biscuits and a pint of milk wouldn’t go amiss as several other cottages in Whitby we’ve rented always do. We felt like we were a commodity rather than guests. The automated message to vacate the property a day before we were due to leave confirmed that and only after I’d messaged the owner only then did she confirm it was automated and not to worry.
Would we return? Probably not. We’d prefer to be valued as guests elsewhere.
- Leah (10/5): Quirky cottage in an ideal location - The cottage was fantastic. Such a quirky place with loads of character, one minute from the centre of the old town but in a quiet location. The beds were comfy and the place was well-equipped with everything you might need. The log-burner was a lovely bonus. Would definitely stay here again.
- Jeanette (1/5): Host was curt verging on rude and the downstairs was freezing cold - Beautiful little cottage, spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Communication with the host was poor. Think we got off on the wrong foot by booking through Booking.com instead of direct which apparently cost her money ( she messaged to tell us , we weren't aware, the price was the same to us , and we got to pay in installments via Booking.com } After that any communication was very curt verging on rude.
The first night was great, the woodburner had been laid for us. The second night we couldn't find any firelighters and the downstairs was freezing cold. I messaged the host only to be told " I supply enough wood for one fire. Additional wood/lighters can be purchased from the co op. ". The cottage is 1/2 mile from the co-op in a pedestrianised area and up steep steps. We had just got back from a long day out and couldn't face walking another mile to get supplies. Nowhere is it stated that wood is limited to one fire and the room simply wasn't warm enough without it. To stay for 2 nights and only have heating for 1 is shocking . A packet of firelighters would have cost her 69p...we had a couple of logs left over. In the end we put the cooker rings on high in an attempt to warm the room. It should be stated in the description that the cost of heating is not included, especially as its an old single glazed building .
- Rebecca (9/5): - Very clean, homely and characterful. Superb location, loved the garden although it may be worth noting for some dog owners the garden has small fences so a bigger dog could probably jump over the fence, but the garden is very cute. We made good use of the log burner since we were chilly with the single glazed windows (to be expected in November). Perfect place to stop in Whitby, we hope to be back soon
- Lesley (10/5): Quaint, centrally located cottage with everything you need - A very central and pretty location. Easy access to restaurants, shops and attractions and a couple of minutes walk to one of the dog friendly beaches. It was really comfortable, with everything we needed and the garden was a real bonus. The cottage was adorable and beautifully decorated. And by using the back entrance it was also very quick up to the Abbey with access to the Cleveland Way. Nothing, it was perfect

- Harrison (10/5): Lovely 3 day stay - This was an excellent cottage tucked away from the busy church street, It was well equipped and the little garden at the back is lovely we also used the log burner which was a blessing after a cold day out, Location is great, There are steps leading to the property that were not an issue compared to the 199 steps to the Abbey, We would love to go back as would our dogs. There wasn't anything we didn't like, The negative points on other reviews The steps, parking etc are just the same in a majority of other properties in the town
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Debra (8/5): Very good - Comfy little cottage, great location, lovely clean comfortable beds.didnt use the kitchen but everything was there to make a meal if needed.very quiet at night. The steps up to the property but we were aware of them before we booked.
- Elizabeth (9/5): Superb - Everything, lovely little old house right in centre of old town Not a problem for us but there are some steps to climb to access the property. Think about 2 flights of 10 steps.
- Ryan (10/5): Terrific location and value for money - Beautiful garden, perfect for sitting out chatting with the neighbours or resting with a glass of wine. Location just down from the Abbey is terrific. Great communication from the host, everything really nicely laid on at the cottage. I loved everything about it. The only thing I can say, though not a criticism, is that there are a couple of flights of stairs to the cottage, so might not suit someone too elderly (my mum is 74 and she did ok, but did get a little tired at the end of the day).
- Lisa (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic little cottage, very clean and in the centre of the old town near to the steps to the Abbey. The cottage is quirky and beautiful but the access to the cottage with all the steps and no drop off for luggage outside does mean for anyone with mobility issues it would prove very difficult. Access to property, the steps to the property.
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional -
- Hayley (8/5): Beautiful - Great location quirky, had a lovely little garden, cottage was cool as the weather was warm, a good base.cottage had everything we needed. The stairs that lead to the property (i have an old dog who struggled a little) and a husband who decided on day 1 to fall while out and damaged his knee and needed crutches for the rest of the holiday 😢
- Nicola (10/5): Wonderful all round xx - charming and perfectly formed. Needs a slip mat in shower as slippy
- Elizabeth (5/5): Quaint old town cottage tucked away in heart of town - Lovely comfortable cottage in the heart of Whitby old town. Well equipped and lovely back garden to enjoy sunshine. Nothing about the property but there are steps up to the property so may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues.
- Rachel (9/5): Saltwick Cottage - The central location was perfect. The cottage is quaint cosy and delightful. It was a lovely cottage to stay in Nothing
- Johnny (10/5): Practically Perfect in Evey Way... - Fabulous location... Perfect for couples... Great outdoor space... Practically perfect in every way. Having to come home...
- Andrew (10/5): Located right in the heart of Whitby. This wonderful place is full of local charm. -
- Doreen (9/5): Great cottage in good location - The location is great right in the middle of town The little cottage was lovely it was cold while we were in Whitby but the wood burner worked a treat Beds were super comfy and it was so quiet Loved it thanks Charlotte There are a lot of steps to it but we managed fine even though my husband has had a knee replacement No parking
