Guest Reviews
- Peter (9/5): The warmth of the family and the abundance of garden-fresh vegetables and strawberries are what make this place stand ou - Very friendly, helpful couple who run the place. The room is comfortable with good hot water in the shower. I arranged with Trisno for transportation to the trailhead (to climb the volcano) and afterward he picked me up and took me to some wonderful hot springs, where he waited patiently while I soaked away the muscle soreness. He also booked a share taxi to Bukit Lawang for me, and he speaks good English, which is not so common in this area. It’s located a good 20-30 minute walk from downtown on a very rough, poorly lit road that’s hard to walk on at night, and there are few restaurants nearby. The road is busy and somewhat noisy at night, and the nearby mosque and rooster get the day started early.
- Tom (7/5): - Sauberes Zimmer Leider etwas außerhalb gelegen

- Leon (10/5): Fijne plek - Fijne. Gastvrije plek. Met persoonlijke zorg en aandacht.
Mooi zicht op de vulkaan. Kan roemoerig zijn door passerend verkeer.
Nacht is goed.
- Tun Che Effa (10/5): I am feeling warm the owner room stay good attitude. - I like the location near to visit hot spot tourism place. The view of Sinabung Mountain, waiting 3 days for sunset get frustrated. Weather a bit rainy in this season. Only at night time so.dark.all.the way going byto the homestay. A bit dusty all the road side.
- Teresa (10/5): - Welcoming couple really nice place to stay for a few days next to a strawberry field.
Bis room with hot shower. Little bit far away from the town but there are local busses to take.
We werden warm ontvangen. Zorgzame familie. Warme douche en schoon bed. De locatie is ver uit het centrum. Lastig vervoer te regelen. Drinkwater moet je kopen. Moskee in de achtertuin erg luid.
- Océane (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice owners, they even made us taste beetroot juice !
- Cheryl (8/5): Very good - Price, healthy home-cooked meals. Noise from road and mosque, mud and flies, location.
- Veronica (10/5): Place to Be♥️ - Peaceful place, genuine and special owners ♥️
- Lawrence (1/5): Warning ⚠️ - Nice and clean room but kinda noisy so close from the road and the mosque and quite far of the main center.
We had an argument with the owner that kinda spoiled the whole experience for us.
We warn you not to rent a bike with him or trust anything he says price wise.
UPDATE : Since we put a bad review on Google map the owner is threatening us. We had to block him.
The couple was very nice and helpful at first they even invited us to join them to the church (we didn't wake up early enough and ended up not going).
We asked to rent a bike before coming and rent it from the evening we arrived. We were unhappily surprised to see there was only one bike (the owner's) and it was not in good shape. We are used to renting bike in Asia and know they are not brand new but this one was in very bad shape. Also no helmets were available so we found it quite dangerous but also expensive as we paid 50% more than in touristic spots with good bikes. We decided to keep it anyway as the owner was nice and the town a bit far. We said to the owner we were going to the volcano at 4am and he didn't want us to let the bike outside so he insisted for us to waking him up at 4 am so he could give us the bike.
The first red flag was the following morning so he intended to stop us from going to see the sunset at 4am scaring us, saying it's very dangerous there were lot of deaths and we should wait 7am.
We were quite upset cause we told him our plans on advance and nobody likes to argument and be spooked at 4am right before a hike.
We ended up going anyway and it was very easy, not at all dangerous and in fact tons of people were already camping there. We felt it was very weird from the owner but didn't think about it more.
We ended up going to a waterfall he recommended (we had a list of touristic things to do he nicely gave us). It took us forever as we had to go slowly as the bike was not very comfortable.
- Julia (8/5): Nice place - Comfortable bed and clean. Good view. Family drives us to the volcano and were very friendly
- Ilgin (9/5): Such a lovely couple! - They were very kind and helpful with everything! They even dropped me to my bus. That can also give you tour of the volcano and the city if you want.
- Martin (2/5): Nice room, but owner is a scammer! Be careful! - Nice clean room with a nice view on the volcano and the owners wife is really sweet and made me good breakfast Unfortunately I had a really bad experience with the owner. He offered me to show me a little around the town with his motorbike and I agreed and thought what a nice person. After around 1,5h we got back and talked about that I still owed him 160k for the room and he asked me if I could just give him 300k because of the petrol of the motorbike. I thought 140k is a lot for petrol but okay, when I gave him the money, he told me that the 300k is just for the petrol and not the room, which is crazy. I told him that he has to tell me before he offers me a ride that he wants so much money and that the petrol we used was maybe 20k not 300k. After a long argument I bargained down to 200k, which is still a scam but better then 300k. I payed and 5min later he told me that he just called the police (!) because he wants his 300k. I honestly don’t know what’s wrong with this guy… Oh and also he said that he can organize the transport to Lake Toba and that it’s 280k. When I asked in the city everybody said it’s just 200k so I just booked it in the city. He’s just trying to scam his guests!
- Diana (9/5): Very nice stay with lovely hosts - Very nice place to stay in Brestagi with lovely and helpful hosts. The breakfast was very tasty. The hotel is next to very busy and loud road
- Jozef (9/5): Comfortable room with nice people with a view of the volcano. - Very pleasant owners Trisno and his wife. Very helpful, the food was delicious and the portions were large. Direct view of the Sinabung volcano. The trip with Trisno to the Sibayak volcano was unforgettable. He helped me climb Mount Sibayak, even though I have joint problems. Thanks again Trisno. A little noise from the road and from the mosque nearby.
- Martina (2/5): Very poor - The room itself was good. The bed comfy and the shower was good, hot. But very noizy from the big street right by the room and from the waterpump near the room. You can see the volcano from the room, that was nice. It is quite far from the center. The owners are not at all helpfull. In the beginning they told us they could do a tour for us (driving to the entrance from the volcano, hot springs and fruit market) for each person 300'000. But we refused the offer cuz its easy to do that all by public transport and walking (fruit market is in the center). After that conversation about the tour they would not give us any answer for further transportation to Lake Toba, how it works with buses. The answer from them to that question was: go to the terminal and ask there, we think there is no bus or we dont know. What was quite funny, cuz normally locals know exactly how the transport here works. Also for the volcano, they acted like is impossible to go there by public transport or motorbike...which was not true. Hopefully in the center were a lot of nice locals who gaved us a lot of information how to go there, which minibus etc etc. (free of charge). On the day we left, we didnt had a breakfast (was included in the room price) cuz no one was there. They didnt care to tell us the night before, thay they will be not there. The room is not cheap so at least we expected a breakfast like included.
- Maeva (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely place, clean room, owners are absolutely lovely 🥰
- Benjamin (10/5): Great value, would love to stay again - Beautiful new room, comfortable mattress and blankets, power outlets by the bed, hot shower, clean bathroom and room, beautiful garden outside, small private deck / balcony, very friendly family-run business Only the noise from the road and mosque but not a big deal
- Thibaut (10/5): Exceptional -
- Juliette (9/5): A must for confort, intimacy and incredible owners. - Loved this place! The room was really clean and confortable! We had complete intimacy with incredible owners that guide us for activities, market, motorbike rentals, coffee tour… We would definitely come back and spend some quality time!
- Ihsan (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts is very friendly. The room is clean. No fan is good enough as Berastagi is high sea level area All good
- Song (3/5): Poor - The owner charges a lot for foreigners....
Always check the price before you decide.
- Eric (10/5): best homestay in berastagi - the room was so clean and the owner was very nice would recommend nothin
- Shane (9/5): I loved my stay, good location, really comfortable, and well managed by friendly hosts, would definitely stay again when - Run by a genuinely nice , friendly couple, in a great location. Nothing
- Albert (10/5): Such a nice couple, really taking care of their guest - Comfortable bed and clean facility
- Hüseyin (9/5): Nice and helpful people. Breakfast is very good. -
- Terence (10/5): Exceptional - Friendly and very helpful.
- Phillips (9/5): Superb - The host and his wife were really lovely and helped me plan my trip to Lake toba and cooked really nice breakfast. The bed was very comfortable and the room was cozy in the local climate. Also the shower was great too.
- Huud (10/5): Calm and cosy getaway - Amazing hospitality, calm serene environment overlooking mt sinabung, we were guided to amazing adventures, locals were very kind and would recommend to anyone seeking a calm cosy enviroment
- Russ (9/5): Amazing hosts, we felt like family. - We loved our time at Vulkaan Homestay. Trisno and Cindy, a very friendly married couple, were amazing hosts. The main cafe is on the road at the front, and the homestay is a room at the back which is literally in the middle of a strawberry field. Yes, you get to pick your own strawberries which was the first thing my kids did. The cafe is on the road that heads out of Berestagi towards the volcano and you have a great view of the volcano from the small balcony outside the room. The room was big enough for me, my wife and two small kids, though is better set up for couples. Cindy cooks amazing food and will prepare whatever you request. Trisno was so helpful with anything we needed plus with advice on where to go and what to do. Trisno and Cindy invited my wife and kids to Sunday church and they had a lovely time meeting their friends and family. Thank you so much for that. Cindy's parents are often round and were also helpful. We extended our stay and wanted to return back later in our travels but sadly ran out of time. There was room at front to park our car and Trisno put it inside the cafe each night. So much to do in and around Berestagi but if you have a family you MUST go to Mickie Funland. I would extend the balcony to join with the cafe so that guests can access the front without walking through the strawberry field. Just makes it more convenient.
- Maxime (2/5): Double booked room, couldnt stay in the homestay - Because we did not stay at the homestay we cannot say what we liked about it. When we arrived at the homestay in Berestagi the owners were not there. The parents of the owner told us to wait for them. After waiting half an hour they arrived and everything seemed fine. We had lunch with the owner and his wife and they were very nice during lunch. However after lunch we still couldnt get in our room. The owner told us that there was a problem with the room, and that the previous guests couldnt leave because of the lady being sick and in the hospitel. Although in the beginning we thought it was a weird story he came up with a solution to which we eventualy agreed. He got us a room in another homestay closer to the city center in Berestagi. This solution was doable for us untill we coincedently bumped into the guests staying in our room (who we recognized because the owner showed a photo). The story about the lady being sick and in the hospitel turned out to be a lie. She was all fine and the homestay just double booked the room. The hosts seemed like they did their best however they seemed to lack experience and lied in a way thats just not appropriate.
- Dana (8/5): Thanks Tristo for taking me around! - Nice to be near the strawberry patch and see the vegetable crops. Not far from Lingga. The owner can drive you where ever you need to go: 20 minutes to the bottom of the trail up Sibayak. If you do not have a vehicle it is a bit far from things. 20 min to walk to the Beragasti market. If you can ride a semi-automatic scooter, the owner can rent you one, and in this case it is fine.
- Naomi (9/5): Superb - Nice owners!
- Raphael (10/5): Exceptional - I Had a wonderful time at Vulkaan Homestay. The whole Family is absolutely warm, welcoming and helpful. The room is pretty new und very comfortable. Good shower and cozy bed. The food is amazing and the owners let you feel like at Home. If the weather is clear You have a nice View to the vulcano and you can pick fresh strawberries direkt from their fields. So If you are looking for a real Homestay experience, then you are at the right Place! I Had a great time, Wish I could have stayed longer!
So high recommendation!
Thank you for the great time!
- Gabriele (10/5): 100% Recommendation - We had such a great experience here that we extended our stay from planned one to two nights. Room is new, spacious and spotless clean. Flushing toilet, hot shower, sink, chairs and table, clothes dryer and not to forget very comfortable bed. View over fields and Vulcano. Possibility to sit outside. You really get hotel comfort combined with staying with a lovely family that welcomes you with open arms and really good food. Totally recommended if you don’t want/need to stay in the busy city centre. —
