Guest Reviews
- Nixon (7/5): Value for money acco in Galle - Short walk up hill from the bus and train station in Galle. Very friendlyJesuits who manage the accomodation. Don't expect any frills
Basic but spacious rooms with shared wash rooms. No air-conditioning but plenty of ventilation and airy. Excellent views of Galle fort and the ocean. Walkable distance to Galle fort,a must visit when you are there. There are no elevators in this old heritage building so keep in mind you have to walk to the upper floors. Nothing to dislike
- Kelly (3/5): Largely as advertised but wouldn't recommend. - Despite no aircon the location gets a lot of breeze given it's location at the top of a hill. Though can't really keep all the doors and windows open all night so have to block off the breeze and the room gets very hot. Not clear where to find staff when arrive or at any time during stay if needed. Room key does not work on front door so have to hope someone will let you in but no obvious acceptable hours. Bathroom not very clean. Shared toilet as advertised but only 1 worked for the whole floor.
- Kn (8/5): Very good -
- Siobhan (9/5): Charming - Lovely people and great sea views with a salty breeze. A calm, authentic stay in a simple, historic monastery. Basic amenities in a very spacious room with lovely views.
- Angelo (9/5): Superb -
- Babak (8/5): Very good -
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional - I felt safe as a female solo traveller.
It’s located near the Galle Fort, bus and railway station and the market which makes it a great accomodation to cover everything you might want to visit in Galle. The bathroom was okay but because of the price and because it’s a shared bathroom you shouldn’t expect luxury. The room itself was clean. You get an amazing view of the ocean, city and you can even see the Galle Fort as it’s up on the hill. The staff was friendly.
- Buwaneka (8/5): You should visit there and experience that - Location is amazing no words for that, very calm place no noise. Location very near to Galle town and galle fort. Place is very clean
- Ashu7877 (8/5): Very good -
- Miranda (5/5): Priceworthy accommodation - Great location with a short walk to the fortified old city. A budget accommodation, but you avoid the overpriced hotels in old city.
1-2 nights is okay. Only a few minutes to the railway station and bus terminal. Bottle water available outside the rooms for free. A slightly strenuous uphill walk to get to the residence, but on the other side, you get a nice view over the city.
- Tisja (5/5): loud construction going on - construction at the moment, alot of dust, loud noises and no sheet
- Alberto (6/5): Pleasant - The location, close to the railways station and bus station and to the main attractions. Nothing else. The cleaning of the room and of the bathroom.
- Charles (9/5): Simple, clean, excellent value and great location - Clean, great value and a fantastic location.
The res is not about profit , it offers a great low cost offering for travellers. The accommodation is simple but comfortable for an excellent price. Location in central Galle is great with some wonder views over the city and a beautiful sea breeze that comes in during the evening. Bathrooms had a peculiar smell but otherwise were more than adequate for the tier of accommodation booked.
For an alternative toilet location try 1710 restaurant in the nearby Fort for the cleanest loo in the city. Try Galle Cricket Club for something closer to the Res.
- Sidney (8/5): Spacious room located walking distance from the fort. - Really interesting place located next to the cathedral. Amazing views from the balcony. Room was spacious and clean. No mosquito nets
- Lien (8/5): Very good -

- Annika (8/5): Excellent value in a characterful building - Excellent value for money in a really interesting building, great views and nice cool breeze. Lovely staff. Nothing
- Aleksandra (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthias (8/5): Very good -
- Kate (8/5): Peaceful quirky place - Good through-breeze and quirkily different. Huge bedrooms (with sink). Shower/loo is shared but clean and easy. Great value (£8 a night) and a tremendous view from the long balcony. Provided a sheet when I asked for it. 8 min walk to the train/bus station so very easy. I’ve been recommending this place to other backpackers all week! No mozzie nets so I kept the lights off in the room in the evening. Short walk up the hill to St Mary’s church and it’s the building to the left as you approach.
- Eva_travelling (8/5): Very good -
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Niklas (10/5): Awesome place with polite staff for solo travelers in Galle - A really great accommodation for a solo traveler in Galle. The location is super central and it was also really affordable. The staff was so polite and overall I really enjoyed the experience there. Sadly when I arrived it was raining, so I couldn't really see Galle. But even during the rain, it was really enjoyable to be in the Jesuit house and watch the storm from the big balcony
- Camille (10/5): Unique stay - Unique experience, kind people, simple big rooms, a few minutes away from the train, 15min walk to the fort, and on top of a little hill so great view. We enjoyed our stay! Mosquitoes in the room: a mosquito net would have been useful.
- Fathima (9/5): Safe, comfortable and convenient - It was safe and comfortable. I went with a female friend and it was our first time travelling alone so I was bit concerned about the safety but since it is a part of the church there is nothing to worry on safety and the staff were very kind and helpful. This place was just great and very beautiful.
Since it's closer to the city centre it was very convinient. Loved the place. N/A
- Nipun (10/5): Exceptional - Being very close to the town and quick access to Galle Kottu, and being able to get these flats at the cheapest prices.
- Kethakee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anjelo (7/5): Good - Great location Nothing
- Maciej (8/5): Very good - - nice view from the balcony
- kind staff
- very big room
- comfortable shower - difficult to find somebody to do the check in (we tried at three different times of day before we managed)
- located on the hill (maybe not easily accessible to everyone)
- hot room, ana lot of mosquitoes and no duvet provided
- Chethiya (9/5): Superb - Best affordable place to spend a night on Galle. The view from balcony was breathtaking. Place was very clean and tidy. And very calm. Staff was very friendly.
- Julie (7/5): Good value for money -
- Matthew (8/5): Very good - The room size and bed are great. Location is fantastic. It is a very cool building and I was happy to experience sleeping there. The staff were very friendly and even told me a bit of history about the building. View is great. Wifi was good enough for communication and research. Quiet at night and feels safe. Some reviews said its hard to find and the doors don't lock. This is not true. There are 2 roads that lead to it and I could definitely lock my room. My room had no fan and it gets quite hot at night. Difficult to open a windows as many mosquitos come in. Some rooms had fans, perhaps I could have requested one. Overall Im still very happy I stayed there.
- Evpa (7/5): Good but work in progress - This residence is very quiet with spacious rooms and an amazing view of the sea. During the night, without the noise of the road and the workers, it is possible to hear the sound of the sea waves. When I arrived there was big work in progress, started two days back and will continue for more days. So stairs and corridors were with a lot of dust and paint residues, also the pavement of the room was affected.
- Emil (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marcus (8/5): Very good -
- Paul (7/5): Good - interesting setting and location (next to the church)
- Hiranmoy (10/5): Comfortable stay - It was a comfortable stay.
The host was really nice The wifi could have been better
- Anita (9/5): Superb -
- Stephanie (9/5): Simple and safe - The staff, location, building, view and bed was very comfortable and the pillow that was provided did not smell at all, as experienced in other accommodations in Sri Lanka.
There was no sheet to sleep under, but this was provided on request. The room and everything else is very simple, if you've done a camino you will love it, if you are thinking about doing one I recommend staying here. The bathrooms are shared and when I was there it was fine, I've seen way worse in hostels.
As soon as you go up the hill there are friendly people all around to point you to the residency. I feel the "hill" is a challenge due to the heat, other than that its not that bad.
When I was there, it was mainly women in the 5 rooms and I felt very safe as a solo traveller.
- Ruwani (8/5): Very good -
- Anand (9/5): A real feeling of colonial stay without paying a premium. - You are getting a palatial space to sleep with typical colonial building and wooden stairs etc. A very different experience. And the view of the ocean from the veranda is exceptional. Thats the best ocean view I would say rather than from the beach. Best place if you are a writer or painter to stay and do your creative art. The room is large enough for 5 people with two double size beds. Drinking water is provided on the same floor as you stay. The road distance from Galle railway station or bus station is walkable. But the church and the residence are located on a hilltop. You have a steep climb for 200 metres on which even a vehicle with 2nd gear will struggle. Thats the only issue and you need to plan your trips to Galle fort or elsewhere so that minimise the number of times you climb this.
Bonus or not you have Galle prison view from the balcony and first time I could see inside of a jail and their morning routines. Its overcrowded prison I would say.
- Misha (10/5): Exceptional - The most beautiful place I have ever stayed🌻
- Kaveesha (9/5): Superb -
- Rifas (6/5): Pleasant -
- Marina (10/5): Perfect view from the windows, clean washroom and room, soft bed and very friendly hosts. Totally recommend for a Galle - Clean and friendly hosts It’s a little bit hard to find on the map
- Rhian (8/5): Good for a night - Accommodating staff, lovely view of the city, fairly calm except the ringing of the church bell early in the morning No mosquito net, poor Wi-Fi, shared bathroom, à bit difficult to find, only 1 PowerPoint in the room
- Kumarasiri (10/5): Rooms are generally simple yet comfortable, promoting a sense of peace. - Jesuit residence is closed to the galle fort. And the staff is friendly. comfortable rooms. It is better to having breakfast or bed tea.
- Peries (7/5): Good - Comfortable and worthy for price…
- Banerjee (8/5): Nice stay - The view from the residence. Excellent view of the fort and the ocean. Didn't get attached toilet which is not favourable for families.
- Yves (9/5): Great experience - Big room with high ceiling. Good mattresses. Excellent location, a few minutes away from the train and bus stations. One can sleep with the rumor of the sea. I would have elected this place as my base if Galle offered more to see and if I had more time to spend in the country.
- Shahithiyen (6/5): Pleasant -
- Gaiusf (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, very big balcony and nice view.
- Ruth (10/5): Exceptional - It was a peaceful and safe place, offering great value for money. The location is ideal, as it's close to all the must-visit areas in Galle, especially Galle Fort. We enjoyed the freedom to relax in a calm environment. I highly recommend it to anyone planning to visit Galle. The staff was incredibly friendly, and we loved the overall vibe.♥️
- Y (7/5): Basic facilities in an interesting location - Large room with high ceilings on a hill with wonderful views from the galleries outside the front and back of the room, rather than from the room itself. I fell asleep hearing the waves in the distance. There's a sink in the room and a drinking water dispenser outside. The place felt a bit deserted and like you were stepping into a different era (not a bad thing, but it may be good to know). It was Saturday night and there was loud music playing from down the hill, although it stopped before midnight and then it was very quiet. Shower and toilet were very basic but served their purpose.
- Frank (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anjelo (10/5): Exceptional - Great place to stay Nothing
- Hayes (10/5): Very spacious rooms with good air flow. Amazing views from balcony. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Great location -
- Nicolas (9/5): Superb -
- Subhashini (8/5): Good - The place is very close to Galle fort and main bus and train station ( walking distance). It seems that the building is part of the church nearby. Room is spacious and had basic needs. The owner responded efficiently to our issues. Price is fair and it is a decent place for few days stay. It has a good view from the balcony. The neighbourhood was calm.
- Sreehari (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bhagat (1/5): Bad - Staff Main Door not getting locked and also the almirah can't lock so no safety of your belongings and only one fan that too can't cover the two beds.
- Vojta (8/5): Great location and view - The location is amazing. 10 minutes from the train station, right next to the Roman Catholic cathedral and with an awesome view from the balcony. The room was clean and spacious. The bathroom is shared.
- Dulip (9/5): Superb -
- Nino (10/5): Hotel is amazing attraction itself - Hotel itself has medieval elements, absolutely beautiful scenery from the balcony, in the evening you can just sit and drink something, wind is blowing so it is almost never too hot. Bathrooms is shared which was definitely advantageous, cause we had warm waters and two washrooms so when you are with two or three people you don’t have to wait for everybody. More complicated than other hotels in Srilanka for sure. Also room had two doors, so when wind blows you never get too hot. We loved staying there, I think It was one of the best hostel experiences in Asia for me Staff don’t know English, even though some of them know, they can’t communicate with you properly.Other then that always tried to be polite and respectful.
- Brendan (10/5): Exceptional - The vibe
- Amira (7/5): Good - Basic room - good value for money. Great location
and building was very cool and breezy no need for AC Shared bathroom a little dirty at times
- Amarasinghe (9/5): Superb -
- Nonis (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable location . Ideal for Visiting all interesting places in Galle . Very calm
- Lena (1/5): It has been unforgettable experiences because of the dirt of this place. It was disgusting - The balcony Everything, it was dirty, the bathroom was disgusting
- Sugirrdhan (7/5): Good -
- Lukas (9/5): Superb -
- Buddhika (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barry (8/5): Very good - The rooms all that was needed. The view and the breeze from the balcony was superb
- Nicholas (9/5): A room, majestic views and a brilliant experience - Location, room, high ceilings, view, breeze, comfort, excellent host, clean and working shared bathroom and overall serenity. Own wash basin with running water in room. 5 minute walk from train/bus station. All good.
One suggestion is a bottle of water in each room or even the option to purchase water on site. Either would be most appreciated.
- Asanka (8/5): Very good -
- Henagge (2/5): Very poor - Only the Place where It was Toilette pubblico non privato
- George (9/5): Superb - Clean, airy rooms, the fantastic view, the friendly staff.
