Guest Reviews
- Léna (8/5): -
- Day (5/5): If you are a single traveller visiting the university then this is a cheap, convenient solution. - Excellent location for visiting my daughter who is at the University. It was two minutes walk from her building. The room and bathroom facilities were fresh and clean. The bed was not comfortable as I could feel the springs in the mattress. The check in is far from the bunkhouse, which I had to use Google Maps to find. It was difficult to get to the reception with luggage. Finally, one of the two shower rooms had a broken lock, and the shower heads were not adjustable.
- Stewart (9/5): Overnight stop before cycling adventure - I was looking for somewhere to get a good nights sleep before and after a bike ride and the bunkhouse was perfect with secure parking hot showers and a well equipped communal kitchen. Rooms are small but very clean and the bed as comfy. It was was quiet at night.
there is a not a lot around the location in easy walking distance so worth getting your provisions en route which I did. some microwave dishes in the kitchen would have been handy
- Owen (8/5): -
- David (8/5): Comfortable and convenient. - Visiting for the Trawsnewid festival at the Arts Centre so location could not have been better. Security staff super efficient when I lost my card key. Lace curtains in N16 need cleaning (mold) or replacing.
- S L (9/5): - Great place to stay if you visiting someone at the university. Easy check-in, staff were friendly and explained where to park. Had all the facilities I wished. My room had a double bed and was more comfortable than anticipated, but then I did bring my own feather pillow. Kitchen could have been cleaner, as floor had lots of crumbs on it. But all equipment was clean.
- Meriel (8/5): Excellent for a warm, comfortable stay. - Typical style of University halls of residence. Clean, warm, great for doing some writing. Handbasin in the room with other bathroom facilities across the corridor. Access to communal kitchen/dining area with microwave, fridge, freezer, kettle, crockery was an excellent reason for booking this accommodation.
- Robert (8/5): - Great facility Solo visitor in adjoining room on 2nd night. I had to knock on her door and request she consider other guests and turn down her speaker and her loud voice during her speaker calls late night and early morning.
Thankfully I brought a soft mattress topper with me as I read reviews about the lean mattress. The room and existing bed mattress was very clean, the mattress looked relatively new and was uncomfortable like the review noted. With my topper I slept well. Thanks
- Excellence (8/5): - The room and the cleanliness. Nil
- Bill (10/5): - Clean and convenient location. Quiet and very affordable Nothing. It was great
- Tom (8/5): Great value stay, very clean. - Clean and great value for money. toilets ran out of soap, parking is a bit of hassle with permits not automatically issued.
- Bryan (9/5): Be clearer about check in please - Came for the comedy festival; so was ideally located a mere stones throw from the Arts Centre. Room just a standard generic student residence that I've stayed in many a time. Very clean ; just what was needed. Just a wee gripe in regards to the non clarity of obtaining key cards to access the building; which involved a further walk back down to the Penbryn building ( im not against walking). Which had to be explained to me by an elderly lady that had luckily just checked in slightly ahead of me.
- Caitanya-lila (1/5): Probably go again - Provided somewhere to stay for what I could afford to pay. The room was bad and I didn’t like sharing facilities with the other people.
- MANU AGARWAL (6/5): The location and the room were perfect! - The room and the communal spaces were clean. The price was good considering the room and the facilities provided like refrigerator, linen, plates & cutlery, hobs, oven, wifi, electric kettle, etc. It is about 20 minutes walk from the town centre and the beach! The shower is very annoying. It stops after every 10 - 15 seconds after which it needs to be triggered again. I didn't like it at all.
- Leanne (7/5): -
- Bartlomiej (9/5): Fantastic place to stay over if you visit Aberystwyth - Very cheap comparing to other places, very clean and tidy place. Security staff was very friendly and helpfull with showing me location of my dormitory. Facilities were spotless clean. Nothing to moan about. Nothing but location. It was about 20-30 minutes walk uphill from Aberystwyth town center (very challanging after long day of chilling at the beach :)
- Owen (9/5): Highly recommended! - Great service from booking to check in, and the room was excellent for the price. The two pillows provided were a bit thin and flat, but folding one in half made them usable. Definitely bring your own pillow.
Literally everything else was perfect.
- Lee (8/5): Just what it said on the can. Quiet and comfy . Would stay again. Also close to town and cheap. -
- Tom (8/5): Great location, value for money - with a bit of cleaning it would be perfect - The cost was incredible compared to anything else available in the area, it was quiet and had everything that I needed in the immediate vicinity, and was a nice contrast to stay up the hill rather than in town. Although it is great value for money, the cleanliness could be slightly better, particularly in the shared shower and toilet areas.
- Rashied (8/5): Very good -
- Amanda (7/5): Very enjoyable. - The location was excellent, bed was comfortable and room was clean with mostly everything you need. I got lost as I arrived in the dark, security were friendly and helpful. This was my fault but I hadn't realised there wasn't a kettle in my room, I would have brought one had I realised. Also, there was a wifi box which you had to look up about how to use it. I'm not very tech savvy so would have liked the information to have been written out and simple. I also didn't know about the parking permit, again, probably my fault but I arrived late and tired and didn't read the information until the morning.
- Anne (8/5): Loved it! - It is a bunkhouse, it does what it says on the tin! Room was cosy and had everything you needed for quiet study. Bed was good, too.
- Victoria (4/5): Disappointing - It was clean and single rooms No information about facilities such as kitchen, laundry, etc.
No direction from reception to the bunkhouse on a late, rainy night. Luckily security was on hand to show me the way.
Plastic mattress that didn’t breathe.
Pillows so flat they may as well be non-existent.
Outdated.
Shower runs between 30 seconds to 3 minutes before shutting off. There is no way to tell what time you are going to get.
Walking paths narrow and uneven.
Doors are all in need of some WD40
Not worth the price
- Joselyn (8/5): Very good -
- Martim (8/5): Very good - No frills, but you get everything you need. It is super clean and convenient if visiting the university. Shared areas, including bathrooms, were well-maintained. Barely noticed other guests in my unit.
- Natasha (8/5): Very good - Accommodation was exactly what needed for visit to son who is studying at the university at great price. Rooms are comfortable and having kitchen is really great. Shower and facilities are all really clean. Have stayed here several times and would do again.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional - instructions to where to pick the keys up on arrival.
- Sanusi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jack (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (8/5): A little spartan but enjoyable. - Meeting some interesting people also staying. Free parking opposite. The showers were very cramped and made it hard to keep clothes dry to change into. The doors slammed hard and were noisy; not good when trying to sleep when others are up and about. Not having an en suite toilet.
- Steve (9/5): Very enjoyable -
- Maria (6/5): Pleasant - Close to campus, great when dropping off at uni Shower was not great, bed a little to hard/bumpy
- Tamas (9/5): Superb - The shower... 😊 There was a fixed showerhead,
- Mary (10/5): Safe accommodation - Safe, secure, warm, comfortable, good kitchen facilities, free parking, WiFi, helpful staff, buses into town. Good price, It was all good!
- Gareth (8/5): Very good - Mattress was a little uncomfy
- Peter (8/5): It's a uni hall of residence - It's a converted hall of residence, at the university, 28 minutes walk up a hill from the station. Cheap, clean, communal kitchen. It's a hall of residence, at the university, 28 minutes walk up a hill from the station. Unless you're needing to visit the uni, the national library or the hospital there's not much there.
- Richard (10/5): Loved it! This is not a budget hotel, if you want freedom, go elsewhere. Sleep and shower here only - I enjoyed my stay immensely. As a former student I knew what I was getting in booking this. The nostalgia of being back in halls was an added bonus when visiting Aberystwyth, a place which holds happy memories for me. Yes the bed is uncomfortable, sweet nostalgia for us alumni.
I had an issue with a very noisy guest, security came out two times to mediate and eventually arranged an alternative room for me on a different floor because this guest was clearly a selfish moron. I really appreciated the level of care in sorting this at short notice and at 3am to boot. I got the impression that this was not a regular occurrence and somewhat unorthodox to move rooms so it really was appreciated.
I felt very well looked after and I will be back. Aside from the guest who thought talking on the phone at 2am and then taking a shower at 3am was acceptable (the walls have always been thin, this isn't going to change) the things to tweak are minor.
My pillows were a bit flat in the first room, they need to be replaced though I will say they were still clean. The towels could be replaced with bath sheets when they are ready to go as they are a bit small. More hooks in the shower would be nice because the towel won't cover much, you have to change in the shower cubicle. The shower extractors weren't working and without regular residents this maybe isn't being checked or reported.
- Andrew (6/5): Pleasant - Smelly kitchen
- Jonathan (6/5): ticked the boxes would use again - cheap as chips the hill back from town center
- Sean (7/5): Basic single room bolthole with wash basin. Shared toilets, showers and kitchen down the corridor. - Basic bolthole, as described More hooks in the showers and toilets would be useful. It's a good mile uphill from town centre / rail station, with only hourly bus service (out of term time). I appreciated the exercise, but others might not.
- Elliot (8/5): Very good - Just like the old days... Cant beat it 😂 .... It was exactly just like the old days... But the wifi was much faster now 😁😂
- Terry (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect for the job Nothing
- Anthony (8/5): Overall, a delightful few days which made me want to be a student again. - The location is fantastic! Everything worked as it's supposed to; the double bed I slept in alone was comfortable (my daughter, in a single bed next door, didn't agree); the catering in the Arts Centre was splendid - indeed, everything about the Arts Centre was first-rate. There's no soundproofing in the bunkhouse, so a noisy party occupying the rest of the flat was a nuisance, as were weekend revellers shouting outside in the early hours. All the power points in my room (N68) are above the bedhead, which is bizarre. The breakfast available (outside term time) in the Food Hall, which we had to take on the final morning because we had to leave before the Arts Centre opened, was very stodgy and sugary.
- Emily (9/5): Superb - Great location (was visiting the Uni), clean, quiet, sink in room. Room was cozy and laid out well with a decently comfortable bed, and great desk space. No frills, but perfect for what it is. Shower heads couldn't be adjusted up or down, so if you don't want to wash your hair bring a shower cap.
- Haze (4/5): Things I didn't like - The grounds
Scenery People who like to clear up after themselves
Door banging
Everything on a timer
No transport to bunkhouse from reception
- Olwenn (9/5): Superb - Comfy room and convenient facilities. Really quiet in July
- Phillip (7/5): Very Friendly Staff - Really friendly and helpful staff! The room was clean and felt safe enough to leave my belongings whilst I was out! Directions to the room itself could be clearer, was told it'd either be on the left or on the right of a path😂
- Roy (8/5): Very good - It was value for money, just outside town, friendly staff. Excellent location
- Roy (8/5): Very good - Staff were excellent, great location just outside town centre
- Prgg (7/5): Close to the centre so very handy. - Did not eat on site. Much older than students! Location close to City centre. Comfortable room. Keys not held at The Bunkhouse. Held at Penbryn (food hall) or at nearby reception. Need to go there first to get directions as Bunkhouse not signposted from top entrance of the University. Not bedside light as such.
- Hayward (8/5): Very good -
- Cameron (9/5): Superb -
- Christine (6/5): Not really suitable for business travel. - It was cheap and clean. It was being used to accommodate large groups of teenagers who were quite noisy. Also the parking situation is very vague and without a car you would have to walk a long way to check in at the main gate (not mentioned in the instructions) then over to the building. Also, it looks a bit like a prison.
- Anthony (9/5): Great location and price. - Very clean and secure, set in the grounds of the University (Penglais Campus) and with access to the sports centre, restaurants and other campus facilities close by. The apartment features separate showers and toilets and has a fully equipped kitchen with seating area and TV. The campus is located just a stones throw from the National Library and Penglais Nature Park , with the town centre and seafront about 15 minutes walk further down the hill. Briefly disturbed by noise from other residents. Some might find the steep walk up from the town a bit challenging.
- Jason (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rhian (6/5): Pleasant -
- Gillian (7/5): Good budget accommodation - Location and price Small showers and very loud doors
- Wells (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elise (8/5): Great place to stay. - Room very comfortable, and included a wash hand basin, a bath towel is also included. Shared Shower and shared toilet were opposite the bedrooms. .Large Kitchen/diner was at the end of the corridor. The key card room lock was extremely efficient, compared to others I have used. Good view out in to the University grounds, and situation very quiet. The bus stops are only a few minutes walk away on top of the hill, and although there are not many buses, are useful once one knows their pattern. There is a Spar supermarket also on top of the hill. Shower gel is included , in shower room. Wifi can work well. Box near door for key cards so no need to trek down hill to Reception to check out. The individual shower room very small and cramped and difficult to get into without getting wet feet. The shower head cannot be adjusted and sprays beyond the curtain, so do not put anything on the floor! Actually another door hook would have been handy, as difficult to put clothes and towel on the double hook. There is no soap or towel in toilet, and no soap in bedroom, so bring your own. The Beko cooker is efficient, but it has two ovens, and the small one is NOT a grill, it will melt cheese but not toast baps or crumpets. The toaster will only take sliced bread. The bedroom walls are only one brick thick, so don't speak loudly on mobil, or play podcasts late at night! If you get University 03 bus it only takes you to porter's lodge, and the hill up to bunk houses is precipitous!
- Deirdre (8/5): Very good -
- Bev (8/5): Very good -
- Cassandra (7/5): Good - Cheap accommodation in the middle of campus, fairly close to the town centre (25min walk, a couple of buses throughout the day, and a cheap 3min taxi ride from the station if need be). It was quiet and the room was clean, with a sink in the room, sheets and towels included. Easy checkout and safe rooms with keycards to lock from inside and outside the room. Very basic accommodation, the showers are push buttons which is not very practical. Not many utensils in the kitchen (it would be nice to have more cutlery, plates and cups). The mattresses are uncomfortable, fine for a short stay.
- Lissy (7/5): Good - Perfect value for money. Right in the university campus. Check in was super easy, room was clean and staff was really helpful Bed was not the most comfortable but absolutely fair facilities for the price.
- Beverley (7/5): Convenient , good rate , friendly staff. , basic facilities as expected - Good location , very clean , good parking , great kitchen , friendly staff Bed very uncomfortable could feel springs and cold in night doors banding from about 5 am
- Simon (8/5): Very good -
- Genevieve (6/5): Pleasant -
- Nick (8/5): Clean and well equipped - Secure entry via electronic pass into the bunkhouse. Decent sized wardrobe for staying a few days, nice workdesk and adjustable chair in the room. Shared kitchen with good facilities which was cleaned daily along with the shared showers and toilets. I particularly liked the fact that I was left in peace by the staff throughout my stay. The room is yours from start to finish and there is no need to have to vacate the room at any point during your stay for linen changes or anything like in some places I've stayed in previously. If you require any assistance you always have 24 hour reception available in a separate building. The shower room and shower itself were the biggest letdown although I wouldn't let that itself stop me staying in the bunkhouse in the future. The direction of the nozzle / shower head was fixed and non adjustable so it was difficult to clean the shower after use. The floor in the shower became extremely slippery when wet and soapy and I'm surprised there wasn't an anti slip mat or something. The showers are push button so you have to keep pushing the button during your shower otherwise the water stops coming out. Maybe these could be adjusted by the university in future so that each push of the button provides water for a greater length of time then we don't need to press as often? Regarding the shared toilets there was a wash basin and soap supplied so you can wash your hands but nothing there to dry your hands on afterwards.
- Joy (10/5): Exceptional - Its good value accommodation in the heart of the University campus There's nothing I didn't like about it
