Guest Reviews
- セン (10/5): - 刚件非常干净整洁,地理位置也非常好,离景点很近!
- Isabella (8/5): lovely home in a beautiful location - location was great, kitchen was very useful
to have, beds were comfortable i didn’t meet any of the staff so i couldn’t rate that properly. also there’s no lock to the house or the room - we were the only people there but something to keep in mind if there are other guests.
- Donna (7/5): -
- Miriam (9/5): Tolle Landschaft, sehr erholsam. - Schöne Lage, große Zimmer, freundlicher Gastgeber Leider waren die Wandertouren in der unmittelbaren Nähe immer an Autostraßen.
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Ros (8/5): - Clean bedding, location, scenery No locks on doors. Please add them.
Finding car park was tricky, please send a location map to others.
- Shui Yam (9/5): -
- Wing Yan (10/5): - Very comfortable place
- walter (9/5): Nice quiet place to stay in the valley - I had the place to myself and it was quite nice. Large room. It's off the main road so its nice and quiet. Great communication from host. I was there during a cold period and it was chilly inside the house, but the heaters warmed it up nicely and quickly.
- Ludmila (10/5): - Don't drive there at night, very hard to make U-turn as it's pitch black with no street lights and very narrow road
- Hans (9/5): Prettig verblijf en genoten - Ruime kamer, goede beden en een ruimte voor gezamenlijk gebruik en keuken. Kortom prima plek!
- Anouk (10/5): Perfect stay for a couple of days in Oboke. - The location was great, and a perfect starting point for exploring Oboke and the Iya Valley. Ryu was a great host, he picked us up from the station as he knew it was going to rain, and also helped us out with finding the best hikes. Beds were really comfortable, and the kitchen supplied with all you need to cook a nice meal. Nothing, absolutely loved it!
- Holly (10/5): Comfortable place to experience Iya Valley! - Easy checking , responsive host . Gave recommendations on area and where to find dakomawashi! Nothing !
- Surina (10/5): I highly recommend this Japanese style guesthouse! - I liked everything about this accommodation. It was very clean, had all the amenities, and the bed was very comfortable. It’s a beautiful traditional guesthouse surrounding by nature, small gorge and tea plantation. I don’t know why people were complaining about the distance between the station and the guesthouse, the walk in between the station and the guesthouse is beautiful and refreshing. It’s just a beautiful valley with beautiful scenic views from every side.
The owner also offered a pick up and drop off service. His family also picked me and other travelers for the local Yokai festival and I had an amazing time at the festival.
I highly recommend this guesthouse. Due to time constraints, I couldn’t do the kayaking activity with the owner but next time I come back, I will definitely do. Thank you. Nothing
- Omer (7/5): - המחיר היה גבוה יותר ממלונות אחרים באזור ולכן המחשבה הייתה שהמקום גם צריך להציע יותר.
- Antoine (10/5): -
- christophe (9/5): I would come again. - The staff is really helpful.
The Property is a little bit aside of the road.
It is quite, but a little bit far away from the railways station.
There is a real kitchen to cook a dinner.
- Jhoana (10/5): It was great - The host is a very kind and nice person. He offered to pick up my luggage from the station and even took me to the only open store at the time to buy some groceries for dinner. The kayak experience was incredible I fully recommend it — he is a great coach! I highly recommend this place and will definitely stay here again if I have the opportunity.
The house is not far from the station, and you can easily walk there if your luggage isn’t too big. The view from the house is amazing and very relaxing. It’s a comfortable, calm, and peaceful place. N/A everything was great
- Lacie (8/5): リラックスできた宿でした - 近くに小川があり、それを聞きながら過ごせて、癒されました。 少し湿気が溜まってました
- Adrian (7/5): -
- Raffael (10/5): Perfect overnight base for a real Oboke Gorge adventure. - The best possible traditional guesthouse experience in one of the most beautiful natural locations in Japan. Easy to get to from the station, but the hosts were willing to provide transportation. Definitely book the kayak excursion with Ryu, he’s an expert and will give you an unbeatable experience.
- Andrea (9/5): - A traditional house in a quiet but accessible area, beautiful views of the mountains, and a very attentive host who is making sure guests have a relaxing and comfortable stay and cares for visitors' personal preferences. The kayak tour with Ryu was a lot of fun, sharing not just skill but also love for nature and the region, beautiful hike recommendations included. Thank you, until next time! Don't expect high-end equipment, but it's not necessary to enjoy the beautiful nature.
- Moran2001 (9/5): -
- Remko (7/5): - Nice Japanese style house/hostel. Common kitchen. Close to station and small store. Large 4 person room. Cockroaches in kitchen and sleeping room
- Thomas (9/5): -
- Tokarahi (10/5): Exceptional - The host was friendly and helpful. The guesthouse was in a fantastic location.
- Ralf-dieter (8/5): Very good - I didn’t like the room without window.
- Patrick (10/5): Great small house to explore the Iya Valley -
- Emmi (10/5): Exceptional - Very comfortable bed, great views and great location close to Ōboke train station, easy to get to. Traditional Japanese house. I recommend taking part in kayaking activities as well.
- Sabina (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful place! We went kayaking with the host and lt was such a nice experience. We got picked up and dropped off at the station, so we didn't have to walk with our luggage. There's a kitchen so you can cook for yourself, which we appreciated after eating out for 2 weeks.
- Kristen (10/5): Wonderful place to explore the Iya Valley - This place was excellent. I really enjoyed my stay here. The host is very nice and helpful. He also does hiking and kayaking tours. The bed was very comfy and I had everything I need to make some meals in the kitchen.
- Jann (6/5): Central and pleasant enough for an overnight stay. - Ryu was very accomodating and picked us up from the train station. He gave us a great introduction to our room and facilities. Being a tea growing area it would have been great to have fresh local green tea to make a pot of tea.
I felt the place smelt mouldy. Now this may be that it is so wet in the Iya valley. I have nothing else to compare it with.
- Seng (9/5): Most enjoyable stay in Iya Valley - Host was very helpful - means a lot for elderly travelers. Only 1 toilet in a big house with rooms on 2 levels.
- Jennifer (10/5): Memorable and moving adventure. - We loved the hospitality and kindness of Ryu (owner / host).
We loved the magestic scenery of the Iya Valley. That our stay came to a close.
- Joshua (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aya (9/5): Superb -
- Giulia (10/5): Little corner in the valley to start and explore - Thankfully the staff came to pick me up in the evening because it's so dark and if you don't know the area, it can be hard to get there, so definitely keep communication with the place.
It was quite easy to find other spots once daylight came and all at walking distance. The valley is amazing and I imagine lively during summer and warmer times, for the autumn is quieter but still great nature and interesting sightseeing. Bed was definitely hard, but I'd say it was the only downside here.
- Li (8/5): A very good and unforgettable experience touring around in Iya village staying in such a convenience destination - The owner Ryu is very helpful. He will fetch the guest from Oboke JR station and send us back to the station after check out. The heater gave out the smell of gas that made us unbreathable.
- Kwee (8/5): Short and comfortable stay. - Friendly and caring host.
- Jenny (10/5): Excellent place to stay; highly recommended. - Kind and helpful host, good location, clean and comfortable accommodation. Traditional style room with good character. Well equipped kitchen. Good base for hiking; host can provide information. We liked everything.
- J.p. (9/5): A really nice place with very kind owner - The owner is extremely kind and attentive, everything was very comfortable. He even gave me his favourite hiking map for exploring the area. After long days of hiking i could relax here completely - it just felt like a second home. I did not use the possibility to try out a canoe trip with the owner. Afterwards i wish i had tried it, since there were also easy trips for beginners. Next time! 😁
- Ellie (7/5): Good -
- Maimona (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (7/5): Good - Odour was bothering
- Deborakika (10/5): Exceptional - We absolutely loved our stay!
the place is 10 minutes walk from oboke station.
the room is big and with a relaxing sound of water at night
the kitchen and eating area is so cosy and with beautiful laps :)
Ryu was amazing and help us to plan our days around the area, besides taking us in one of the days kayaking in Yochino river. everything was amazing
- Sara (8/5): Very good - All good! Nothing
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeremy (8/5): Very good experience overall. Iya Valley is unmissable and this is a great place to see it from. - Very helpful host, spacious room, beautiful setting. Beds with thin futon mattress on hard board are not for everyone. But if that's what you like, it's great. Bathroom and shower rather basic.
- Daniel (10/5): A great place to stay in Oboke - The host and his family were extremely helpful. They came to get us from the train stations and drove us back when leaving. He gave us many tips on the area. The house was very comfortable in a quiet place, central for the various local activities that we reached by local bus. Nothing.
- Shuaijian (7/5): Good -
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Florian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jennifer (9/5): Superb - Great place with good facilities. The host is really helpful, with good communication throughout. We also took the opportunity to go kayaking, which was fantastic!
We would stay here again.
- Nicola (8/5): Great value for money in stunning location. - Beautiful, quiet location. Nice kitchen and living space. No lock on house or bedroom door. Thin walls - if your fellow house guests get up, you’ll wake up too.
- Kam (9/5): Superb - Scenery nearby is stunning. The owner Ryo san n Sakura san are both providing excellent hospitality. Nothing
- Caitlin (8/5): Very good -
- Py (8/5): Relaxed, authentic stay, near Oboke station - Very authentic and relaxed stay near Oboke station! We caught the bus to the Iya bridges and did a few beautiful, relaxed walks in this area. There’s not much in terms of facilities in Oboke - 2 small supermarkets so if you got here on a whim with the train like we did, it’s nice if you’re a bit prepared and do some research about the surroundings.
- Valerie (10/5): Exceptional - Ryu the owner is very helpfull and his place is beautifull.
- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karl (6/5): Pleasant -
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ryan (7/5): Good -
- Edward (10/5): Exceptional -
- Miller (9/5): Terrific host, and guesthouse, easy to imagine returning. - Location, very good. The weather.
- Jeroen (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing rooms and location. The kayaking is alot of fun and I definitely recommend you doing it. The views of the neighbourhood is breath taking. There are some restaurants and shops nearby.
- Christophe (10/5): Stunning stay at COSMOS - The guesthouse is nestled in a beautiful mountains area. The owner is very friendly and helpful ( He does speak french). The location is stunning with tea fields. Bed is comfy and good size for 1 person. You can cook. OBoke station is only 10 minutes walk. The region is very very beautiful. If I have to come back around I know where to stay All was perfect
- Marloes (10/5): Exceptional - Great place, very homey and has everything you need even free laundry. The owner is also very nice. You can't lock anything unfortunately, would be great if lockers were added for valuables.
- Karina (10/5): Comfortable and welcoming - Cosmos guesthouse was very comfortable and welcoming for a budget option. A Japanese house that has been converted to a guesthouse for an authentic experience with a clean kitchen and shared bathroom. It’s great for adventurous travellers. The stunning river is a short walk away.
- George (6/5): Location! If you're OK walking 20 mns for a rice ball and not having Japanese level comfort, great! - Japan--most delightfully, maddeningly, existentially--thwarts expectations. In this regard, the guesthouse did not disappoint.
The form, function, and duty of hospitality is there. In buckets. Giant Japanese buckets, solid, woven with care (but not heart). There was a gigantic rain when we were there. The trains stopped! The proprietor's wife spent *four* hours picking up the other guests.
They got stuck behind a landslide.
Caught in this epic deluge, we felt stuck and isolated. How would we get food?
It's not so bad. You can walk twenty minutes to a couple small supermarkets.
The sun comes out.
It's glorious.
But remote. Or, "And remote" or perhaps "Wow, remote!"
Don't miss the fantastic Yokai (local folklore monster) museum. And if you happen to find yourself in a torrential train stopping downpour, go to the onsen five minutes up the road, soak in the outdoor baths, watch logs whipped by the torrential river below, and don't fret the siren. I was told it was okay, just something about the dam (?). Go figure.
If you seek and appreciate that remote kind of thing, and don't mind walking twenty minutes for a rice ball, this is great. I suspect the proprietor would be a most fantastic companion on the water in a kayak. I certainly hope so. At the risk of sounding like a digital princess, the place lacked a few fundamental things that I would overlook in a heartbeat but they stuck out in Japan.
No hot water the first night. Okay, the guy forgot to turn it on. But this was typical of the place. It was, by Japanese standards, a bit dirty. I mean, my home never gets that clean, but the bar is high over there. The poor guy was just... distracted.
Distracted as hell.
I hope it's temporary. Or disappears when he is in the rapids.
There is a nice common area by the kitchen. At one point, he said he needs to work there.
Is it princess-y or prototypicaly American to think, dude, I paid for this place! As much as I paid elsewhere for (cleaner) places with breakfast and dinner. And with a bit of tea or coffee. A wee bit of tea (though a stunning, STUNNING back yard view of tea growing there) or a small wafer of sweet something would have been great.
Emptying the garbage would have been great. It just grew and grew over the few days we were there.
This is not to say don't stay there-- STAY! It's a nudge to Ryu-san.
I hope I caught him on a bad few days and he is generally doing better. Poor guy was so stressed out.
- James (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely stunning guesthouse in the mountains of Shikoku. A beautiful location and a very comfortable guesthouse with amazing views! Sakura is such a nice and gracious host!
- Marco (10/5): Sakura-san and Ryu-san helped us a lot by providing detailed information about where to go and what to do during our sta - Beautiful location and very-very kind staff
- Leigh (9/5): Superb -
- Sarah (10/5): Very calm, friendly environment - the perfect get away - If you're looking to escape into nature and get away from stressful environments, this is the perfect place. Ōboke is ideal for hiking, enjoying the natural scenery, and tasting the local tea. Ryu is an excellent host and was always available with tips and suggestions. I had a wonderful stay and thoroughly enjoyed it.
- Olivia (9/5): Gorgeous place, as long as you’re ok with the creepy crawlies! - Stunning location in Oboke, the views are amazing. The room was very nice, traditional Japanese style with attached kitchen which was very handy as no restaurants or shops are open at night in this town. Ryu, the owner, is also very helpful and friendly, he was happy to help me out with my questions, and has kindly provided maps and bus timetables for the area. Honestly I would have given this place 10/10 except that both nights I was there I had first a big huntsman spider crawling around the room, then a big centipede. It’s a rural area so it’s not that surprising, but it did freak me out a bit and made my stay a little stressful 😅
- Laura (10/5): Relaxed stay in beautiful Oboke Gorge with a wonderful host and lots of activities! - The house had a lovely relaxed and serene atmosphere, which matched the surroundings. Ryu was an attentive and kind host and made us feel at home. The guesthouse has all necessary amenities and we felt very comfortable using the space. The location is beautiful and there are many scenic walks around. We also did kayaking with Ryu which was one of our favourite experiences from our travels! There is a great coffee shop just up the road too :) There was nothing we didn't like!
- Lukasz (8/5): Very good - I felt quickly like at home. Great guesthouse for cyclist and hikers who want to go to Mt Miune and Mt Tsurugi. Big room.
- Viriya (8/5): Great peaceful experience in the nature. - The location is right across the pier for Oboke boat tour and surrounded by beautiful tea plantation. Very peaceful. The owner, Ryu, is very friendly and helping me to plan my trip/activities around Iya Valley/Oboke and Mt Tsurugi. He also offers kayaking tours! Nothing
- Louise (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was very convenient and the bed sheets so soft! I recommand :)
- Aleksandr (9/5): Superb -
- Barbara (9/5): We had a lovely room in a quiet and beautiful lush setting. Ryu was friendly and helpful. - Quiet, beautiful location, traditional style room, comfortable beds
- Jennifer (10/5): Sleeping and kayakingsurrounded by stunning natural beauty - Cozy accommodation close to natural beauty. The guesthouse has three rooms, a common area with a spacious kitchen and a bathroom. Ryu, the owner, was really friendly and helpful. He provided information about the area and made recommendations for activities. He even organized a kayaking trip for us last minute for the next day with him as a guide (can also be booked in advance). An active and different way to experience the beautiful natural surroundings!
We had rented a car, but other travelers came by bus and had no problem to find the place.
The room was nice, spacious and had a view of the neighboring Japanese tea plants.
The cozy and quiet accommodation and the helpful host really perfected to our trip to the rural parts of the Tokushima prefecture.
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Jaime (10/5): Exceptional -
- A.p. (8/5): Lovely - Great little place to stay to see this area. It's a mix between a traditional japanese ryokan and a hotel/guesthouse in the sense that there's tatami-mats, space-heaters, traditional design but also a kitchen (for the double-room we rented) and raised beds. The owner was super friendly and helpful. We were delayed in arriving to the guesthouse and he waited for us to arrive , pre-heated our room, everything. Very grateful.
The valley/gorge is a great place to stay; good walking routes, good base for excursions in the area. Close to the train-station, too. Nothing much really. This place is great value for money, a great quiet experience and in a great location. The only thing to 'worry' about is being able to park a car as the entry-road towards the guest-house is narrow (one-car only) but two-way; and the space infront of the (auxilliary) building to park a car only allows one car to be there. There is likely space nearby to park, however, and there is room to turn the car around further up the road, relieving the need to drive out, backwards.
- Christopher (9/5): Superb - Fantastic facilities, owner is very helpful and has good recommendations. Very well equipped accomodation with full kitchen, room, heaters and everything you might need. This is not the fault of the host/accomodation. But I would advis4 having a car to take full advantage of all the nearby area!
- Selim (10/5): Wish I could spend more time at the guesthouse - I had the best stay ! I only spend one night but I wish I could have spend more time. Ryu is so nice and gave really good advice. I would definitely come back if I have the chance. The region is amazing. Nothing
- Wai (10/5): A nice stay - The place is clean and the beds are comfortable. The location is fine, about 12 minute-walk from Oboke Station & 8-10 minute walk to Oboke Pleasure Cruise. Ryu is a nice, helpful host. He took us to the guesthouse from the station when we arrived & drove us back when we left. It’s more convenient to have some hooks for hanging things in the shared bathroom.
- Rex (10/5): Exceptional -
- Simon (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent Nothing
- Anna (8/5): Very good -
- Amanda (3/5): Biggest disappointment on Shikoku Island - The host was friendly. Beds were okay. It was quiet enough. The problems started immediately. We told the host we were arriving by car and he didn't answer us about parking. There is a horrible "makeshift" spot for a single car in front of both guesthouses. So 1 car space for 4 rooms of people... Before we could move, another guest blocked our car in. We had to ask them to move. Later the host told us, the information centre 1 minute down the road has 24h free parking... So we moved the car there. 🤦
The room we got had completely different interior and beds. We bought Japanese style room but got Western. The tatami floor is to tally covered by a grey rug. The beds are not futon but single size raised wooden frames on opposite ends of the room. We're a couple. So we moved them together.
We were the first to arrive and the host showed us the other rooms, all are the same. Yet he gave us the bottom floor and I would have liked the top of floor as it was the same. It was explained we'd have some French people above us. Plus some Belgians in the other building later.
Finally, he forgot to give us the key. When we asked, we got a key that looks like it's made for a $2 lock. I could have snapped it between my fingers.
It left a bad taste in our mouth. Especially as we had just left such a beautiful dwelling 1 hour to the East. I would have rathered going back there and then just driving 1h here to do things.
Some things which helped our optimism. The host is nice, he speaks good enough English. We had a private kitchen (but we didn't need it). There's a convenience store only 5 minutes walk away. The store has free easy 24h parking (park there).
It's just a shame the host seems kind of incompetent. I mean we read that someone had to sleep in a broom cupboard here because he had double booked them... After coming here I believed that certainly was possible.
We ended up leaving 1 day early and just losing the money we paid for a much nicer place in Takamatsu.
- A.p. (8/5): Great for hikes ! - The guesthouse is located in a little nook off the main road. Super cozy and authentic. Rooms with tatami mats BUT with off-the-ground futons. Multiple ways to keep it warm, AC + kerosene and the owner stayed up to welcome us even though we came in waaay past our scheduled check-in time! Room was warm when we arrived and we had a great time in the neighborhood.
We shared the guesthouse with one other guest making it even more intimate and comfortable.
- Bruce (10/5): A beautiful location in a very tranquil part of rural Japan. Would highly recommend. - NA Everything was wonderful about Cosmos Guesthouse, however the location is just a little difficult to get to.
