Guest Reviews
- Sumer Gokce (10/5): Great 😃 - Imo is a fantastic host. Friendly, warm, and genuinely caring, she went above and beyond to help us with anything we needed during our stay. Highly recommended. -
Riesige Empfehlung!!!

- Dorien (10/5): Abosulte nice - Nino and his mother where so kind, they tried to help with everything. We had a great room and got a lot of suggestions on what to do and eat in the area. Also for al kind of things Nino can help you with it, scooter rent, guide for vulcano, taxi you name it he will help you.
- Matylda (6/5): - Cooler and nicer air than in the center of Berastagi. I had problem with water - it was either scalding hot or after a minute - cold. I hoped it will be calmer, but the noise drom the street was present.
- Jamie (8/5): -
- Finn (10/5): - Such a lovely place to stay! The owners are super friendly and helpful, and the hot showers are amazing especially after a hike :)
- Menno (10/5): - Nino & Imo (& Pigu, cutest dog in whole of Sumatra) are incredibly friendly and extremely helpful. Nino organised all of my activities and needs during my stay and also helped me with my transportation to my next destination. It was also a lot of fun to hang out and spend time together!
Highly recommended!
- Michaela (8/5): - Nette Gastgeber, nicht weit vom Stadtzentrum in Berastagi entfernt
- EY_M (10/5): - Our room on the ground floor was spacious, comfy and warm. The water heater worked well. We loved taking the local bus right at the door to go downtown to restaurants. It was 30k per person.
The host also helped us to hire the local bus to bring us to the starting point of the Sibayak hike. It was not an easy drive! Wish there was a sink in the bathroom
- Konings (10/5): Amazing.. - This is more than just a guesthouse. As long as you stay there, the mother and son will ensure to make you feel like family. We will miss them and we will come back one day ☺️!
_____
The accommodation was very clean and has nice rooms with comfortable beds. There is a nice common area and a large kitchen. Nimo and Imo are very hospitable and can give many good tips for your stay in Berastagi. Both speak very good English. They will also be happy to negotiate the best price for public transport for you. It takes 10 minutes by bus to get to the city center and about 20 minutes to the starting point of the hike.
Nimo is also a chef and not only knows how to cook a good breakfast, but is also happy to share his knowledge of Indonesian cuisine. The whole thing is completed by the dog Pigo, who is very happy to meet new people. We had a very good time there!
- Robert (7/5): - The hosts were very nice and helpful. The room is as basic as it gets but at least the shower was nice and hot. The location is great and quiet area and they have gorgeous dog. No sink to wash hands so have to get the toilet wet everytime to wash hands.
- Lotte (8/5): -
Paní domácí mi kvalitně a levně vyprala prádlo.
Bez špuntů do uší to nejde.
- Alecia (9/5): A chilled out place - I loved our stay at Karo Hill- the room was spacious, the bed comfy and the hot shower was a bonus. The location is perfect for accessing Sibayak, its walking distance to the fruit market and the town in general- if you don’t want to walk there is a local bus right out the front regularly. Nino was a great host- I tagged along with him to visit the local market to buy ingredients for dinner and he took my Dad to the barber for a haircut and a shave. We both enjoyed chatting with him and his Mum during our stay. Nothing
- Laura (8/5): Sehr authentischer Aufenthalt :) - Seeeeehr nette Hosts, mit denen man wirklich authentische Erfahrungen sammelt, schöne Aussicht, bequeme Betten, nette Tour zum Erkunden von Berastagi Kein Waschbecken im Bad, kein Klopapier
- sven (9/5): - Tolle Lage. Besitzer in allen Belangen super hilfsbereit.
- Ellen (10/5): Home away from home - Nino and imo are the most friendly and welcoming persons. The rooms are big, clean, nice bed and hot shower. Location is perfect. They arrange tours ( sunrise on sibayak, daytrip around Berastagi,...)
We went 2 days together with Nino and we had een amazing time.
In the evening we sat together and talked and drinking tea. We came as friends and left as family. Thnx for everything ! Nothing
- Valette (10/5): Exceptional - We had an unforgettable stay with Imo and Nino. We had originally booked 2 nights and then we added 2 more because we felt at home.
The accommodation was perfect and very clean (the bed is super comfortable!!).
Nino organized our entire stay, he gave us advice and walked us everywhere, teaching us lots of things. We were able to go to the market with Imo and enjoy afternoons and evenings chatting and cooking together.
It was our second family during these 4 days and we are extremely grateful for these good times spent with them. I recommend everyone to stay at Karo Hill and take the time to talk with them because they are wonderful people!!
Thank you again for everything, we will not forget you, we can't wait to come back and share a good meal ;)♥️
- Marius (10/5): Local experience - We had a great time staying with Nino and his mother Imo. Both were really kind and very interested in making our stay pleasant. Nino also showed us all the hidden gems in the area and cooked some really nice meals for us.
The room was spacious, clean and had a comfortable bed. The view from upstairs is amazing.
Thanks guys for the great time :) -
- Callum (10/5): Exceptional - Nino treated me and my partner like we were family. He organised the sunrise trek, our transfer and suggested places to eat and stop off when we explored berestagi on the moped. Can't say a bad word. The bed was comfy and the first hot shower in over a week which is always nice.
- Jdbm1 (10/5): Exceptional - Very welcoming hosts, always ready to help. The location is far from the noisy city centre (this is a good thing). You get to breathe fresh air and enjoy a really calm environment. If you want to hike Mt Sibayak without a guide (yes, it is possible), you will be already closer to the trail.
Easy to access by foot or bus (Kama buses from city centre).
- Zoë (10/5): Exceptional - If I could rate this place 20/10, I would! If you stay in Berastagi, you HAVE to go here!
Nino and his mom took me in like family. They took us to the local market, cooked amazing food and are just so nice to hang out with and talk.
The house and rooms have a very relaxed atmosphere and are perfectly clean an spacious. The views from the balcony are great!
The location is ideal to hike up mount Sibayak.
Nino talked us through the options of activities in the neighbourhood and arranged everything to make it happen as we wished.
He even prepared me a lunchbox for my ride to lake Toba.
This really felt like home away from home. Thank you so much! Absolutely nothing
- Thomas (9/5): Amazing place - Such a good time with Nino and his mother. They are so welcoming and very helpful (they help me to fix my broken motorbike). They are such good advices too. And the accommodation has everything you can expect.
Don't be shy to stay few nights, you won't be disappointed to spend time at Karo hill !
- Laura (9/5): Superb - Warm and personal homestay experience
Nino and his mother run the homestay with a lot of care. Nino was extremely helpful – he showed us around the local market, took us to a nice café, cooked delicious meals (he used to be a chef for 12 years), and even prepared a lunchbox for our onward journey, all free of charge. He also gave us great travel tips and contacts for other cities. The place is simple but clean and has a very homey atmosphere. A great choice for anyone looking for a more personal stay in Berastagi. One thing to be aware of: our private bathroom didn’t have a sink – just a tap without a basin. Also, there was no toilet paper provided, due to environmental reasons. Neither was a big issue for us, but it’s good to know in advance so you can be prepared.
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Felix (9/5): Superb - Very friendly and helpful hosts!
- Jeeyoon (1/5): One of the worst travel experiences ever - AVOID AT ALL COST - None TLDR: the host is a scammer. AVOID AT ALL COST. SEVERE MISREPRESENTATION.
We had to find another hotel at the last minute, and the host is still refusing to issue refunds.
-------------------------------------------------------------
I booked a "Three-bedroom bungalow" which was supposed to have three bedrooms, a living room, and balcony. Upon arrival, we discovered that the bungalow I booked was actually the host's private residence. Instead, they attempted to place us in a detached room with a double bed in a poor condition. (obviously, one that doesn't even appear in the booking.com photos).
It was a non-refundable reservation, but the host orally (and also via whatsapp) promised to cancel for free given the absolute mirepresentation. So we left to find another accommodation and stayed there.
However, after we left, he started dodging my message, saying that he can't accept cancellation because booking.com hasn't requested any, while at the same time, only contacting via whatsapp (apparently booking.com only considers communication via their own channel) He then falsely accused that we were 'no shows' and refused to waive the fee, and became confrontational (see whatsapp). I'm still waiting to seek ways to get the refund and get this host off from booking.com
- Baark (9/5): Superb - fantastic host nothing
- Tharmiah (10/5): The best and affordable Bungalow stay in Karo Hill, Berastagi, Medan, Indonesia. - I would say a "WOW" to the way the wonderful mother and an enthusiastic, vibrant, and ambitious "NINO" the son in welcoming & handling the guest in Karo Hill Bungalow. All my family members were very happy because both the mother and son were ready to help and guide you throughout the stay. Especially, Nino was very informative on any topics you discussed. Definitely will attempt to visit soon 👌👍🫶🤝 There's nothing to say about dislikes.
- Rebecca (10/5): Welcoming and Beautiful - Fantastic place to stay in Berastagi!
Nino and his mom are so incredibly welcoming and kind. Nino is super enthusiastic about showing you all Berastagi has to offer - he is happy to cater it to your interests. He will arrange everything for you and personally take you to most places. Examples: street food tour, agricultural tour, cave exploration, cooking classes etc. If you think of something you want to do, I have no doubt that Nino can make it happen.
Both he and his mom speak perfect English.
Location of the place is great - close enough to town, but not right in the overcrowded center. Close to the base of Sibyak (we actually ran the trail directly from the house).
Room is clean and comfortable, amazing balcony with a great view.
10/10 would recommend.
- Kimberly (10/5): Just like family - I loved staying here. Nino and his mother made me feel like family and I even extended my stay. They shared with me places I would never have had the opportunity to see. I highly recommend staying here. I will never forget my time staying here.
- Elixabete (10/5): Exceptional - High quality service & good location to hike the vulcano or walk (about an hour) to the hotsprings.
Nino and his mother were the best guests 👌
We recommend to have breakfast/lunch or dinner there. They offer delicious food & best passion fruit juice ever!
Terimakasi! The toilet had no sink
- Luca (10/5): Best place in Berastagi! - This was one of the best places I have ever stayed in, nino and his mother are incredibly nice and helped us in every way possible. Nino made us amazing tea, showed us his garden and explained a lot about all the plants and spices he grows there. He is also a professional chef and will happily go to the market with you to pick whatever you want and cook you delicious dinner. And his mother helped us get a bus to tue volcano. The rooms are also very nice, its very vlose to the volcano and the beds are comfy. I just wish we could have stayed there longer!
- Roman (10/5): Perfect place in the nature - This was an incredible trip to Sumatra, mostly thanks to Nino and his mother who own this nice bungalow near Sibayak volcano. Everything was just perfect, the room is spacious and with the view on the volcano. Nino dropped me to some places just for free on his bike and showed some places only locals know about, gave recommendations on food. But my advice is try Nino’s cooking, he’s great chef too :) Have nothing to complain about
- Jonas (9/5): Host was very nice and wants to help you with everything. He offers all kind of connections for drivers etc. so you don’ - Nice Host.
Cozy beds.
