Guest Reviews
- Shelley (10/5): Lovely middle stop for shimanami kaido - Super convenient, had a room with bathroom all to ourselves for 3 people. Owners were so lovely, they promptly helped us to check in and also dry our shoes and wash/dry our clothes after an intense day of cycling in the rain!
- Erin (8/5): A lovely, budget friendly guesthouse with very welcoming and kind hosts - We loved that this guesthouse was tucked away but still convenient for the shimanami kaido. It was extremely clean and the hosts were very kind and welcoming. Unfortunately since our semi private room only had a paper door, we could hear snoring from our neighbors and could hear whenever someone got up in the middle of the night.

- Georgia (10/5): Cosy and welcoming stay - We loved staying at tonari, the owners were so friendly and welcoming, helping us to dry our clothes and shoes from the rain and warming our room before our arrival. Cosy rooms and nice area with great pizza restaurant and bakery.
- Darja (10/5): - Hosts are amazing, is super clean and my semi-private room was perfect.
- Mika (10/5): - Clean, great staff, fair value Felt a bit crowded at times in the shared areas
- Henry (7/5): - Staff were awesome and very helpful. The shoji dividers meant that we shared a large room with others meaning a bit of sleep interruption. Not a major for us but if you a quiet and more private room then I would ask the host for a private room.

- Alexandra (10/5): Exceeded expectations in every way! The space was roomy and the staff were friendly and helpful! - Tonari Guesthouse was beyond what we expected by a mile! Doing the Shimanami Kaido, we were thinking we might have to stay in a bit of an older place pretty far from the main route, but this place was right on the Island Explorer line and is newly renovated, open and bright, and roomy.
Not to mention the staff were so kind and were waiting to greet us as we rolled up on our bikes, gave us a full tour, and even handled our laundry for us! Talk about premium service!
I've done the Shimanami Kaido twice now and tonari was by far the more comfortable and enjoyable stay. I highly recommend for singles, couples, and families! We were five family members and shared the big room and had plenty of space for all of us.
Thanks tonari! It was honestly great, no notes!

- Mark (10/5): Exceeded our expectations. - The staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and helpful. They also offered a laundry service and support to dry our wet cycling gear. We also went to a local restaurant recommended by the host, Kuroshio, which was excellent. -
- Anders Isaksen (8/5): - The location was great as we were headed towards the Oyamazumi Shrine with bicycles. The staff was nice and welcoming, and gave us a great recommendation for a nearby restaurant. It's a hostel, so you have to share bunk beds with strangers, which might not be everyone's cup of tea
- Yong (10/5): Very comfortable and cosy stay. - Very comfortable room after a day of cycling in the rain. Flow of the house like going through many doors to take a shower.
- Gavin (10/5): The rooms were clean, each bed in the mixed dorm had its own privacy curtains and plugins/reading lights. The owners -
- Fahd (10/5): Wish we could’ve stayed longer! - Beautiful location. Nice and clean, very comfortable.
Staff are very lovely!

- Greg (7/5): A traditional stay in a good bike-riders location. - Location was rural and quiet, it was recently renovated so facilities were good and functioned well, we coped with the many instructions. Only one toilet and a urinal shared between 8 people, 2 separate shower rooms. The meaning of the sign ‘no pissing’ was confusing, we had to assume it only referred to males using it.
- Elaine (10/5): Great location, clean property, friendly hosts! - Impeccably clean amenities, perfectly comfortable room and bed! Taka and Kana were very friendly and able to effectively communicate with adequate English about logistics and using the property. They also had helpful recommendations and tips for food, sightseeing, and speaking Japanese. I stayed at Tonari during my bike tour of the Shimanami Kaido and they were able to receive/forward my luggage from/to my prior/subsequent accommodations without issue (i.e., affiliated facilities of Sagawa Express, but I believe there are other companies available). There is also covered bike parking on site. The location is relatively convenient, a block away from a grocery store (closed on Sundays) and 24h FamilyMart ~10min away by bike. It’s not too far from the Tatara Bridge either, which makes exploring Ikuchijima not too difficult either. I’d definitely stay here again next time I ride the Shimanami Kaido! Not sure why there needs to be a dedicated men’s toilet on the first floor. If it’s a mixed gender floor, all toilets there should be mixed gender! Everyone has to sit for a number 2 anyway. But this is a minor comment; my stay was perfectly sufficient in every other way. Still highly recommend!
- Kashyap (10/5): Perfect stay, no complaints - Great stay, perfect location, friendly hosts

- 598debecf3c271e41dae2e89dea5a517 (10/5): Exceptional guesthouse and kind hosts - The house was very clean, it had a well equipped and modern kitchen, comfortable bathroom and beds. It had a small garage where we stored our bicycles.
It looks better in person than in the pictures in my opinion.
Our hosts were the most welcoming and nice I have ever seen in any guesthouse, they helped us with everything we needed and even more. We are very grateful for them making us feel so comfortable. Nothing

Vielen Dank!

- ccc2d4b0f7e170c38db4c7c08e98f0b3 (9/5): - Hosts were very friendly and had a lot of good recommendations for local restaurants and hot springs.
- c7777b8466577279b77d0d26a30bf14f (10/5): - A great guesthouse run by a lovely Japanese couple. It was the perfect spot to rest for a night before completing our cycling trip. The place seems newly renovated and spotlessly clean. I appreciated the fully equipped kitchen so I could cook dinner at night. The island is so beautiful and peaceful that I left feeling like I could have spent another night there. Nothing, it was perfect :)
- Patrick (7/5): - Comfy beds and a nice communal area. Good location to spend the night if you are doing shinimano kaido over 2 days. Walls are very thin
- Mayumi (10/5): -
- mikesanli (10/5): Lovely place with really friendly and helpful hosts! - It was a really nice place! The hosts were so welcoming and helpful, they really care about making their guests feel comfortable, they can speak English and we're super nice, we even had a conversation about our past trips.
I also became friends with some other guests there, the place simply has that friendly and lively aura.
Greetings from Mexico! Nothing to dislike, it was a perfect stay.

- Stacy (10/5): - Les hôtes étaient adorables, l’emplacement est optimal pour s’arrêter à mi-chemin de Shimanami Kaido, c’était propre, bref j’ai rien à reproché !
- wladimir (10/5): -
- Lydia (10/5): - Loved the whole place, couldn't fault it. The owners were lovely. Great place to stay for a quiet night, on a bicycle tour. Only thing was the location due to many restaurants only open on the weekend. But this has nothing to do with Tonari.
- Mark (10/5): Great stay, very inexpensive. - Accommodation is recently built and very comfortable, the hosts are marvellous and spoke good English, and the location was good. Nothing
- Yoan (10/5): - Propriétaires agréables.
Logement bien placé.
Équipements propre Rien
- Jay Vee (10/5): GREAT Hostel for Shiminami Kaido Cycling - We liked every bit of it. The owners, Taka and Kana, were really awesome as hosts. They were very accommodating and gave us lots of advice, especially since it was our first time doing the Shiminami Kaido Cycling. The rooms exceeded our expectations as they were very modern, very clean, and had all the things you need, such as a kitchen, common area, work room (with ergonomic chairs, yes!), everything! They were also very particular about the quiet hours, so rest for all occupants is really guaranteed.
If we pass by Omishima again, we will definitely stay here again. None, I love every single part of it.
- Shine Wanna (10/5): - Stayed in the double bedroom with my wife. It is a short cycle off the main path and quite close to a Family Mart. When we got to Omishima island quite late in the evening I could not cycle any further due to an injury. Taka was kind enough to help me out! Taka and Kana were amazing hosts and the accommodation itself was great to stay at. The facilities and amenities were more than adequate, and sufficient heating is provided for cold days. I would highly recommend staying here if you are cycling on the Shimanami Kaido over two days. No complaints!
- teruhisa (5/5): -
- Joseph (10/5): - The owners were incredibly kind and welcoming. The facilities were very clean and comfortable. Wouldn't hesitate to return should I find myself in the area again
- Prathamesh (10/5): - Hostess was very friendly and helpful
- Anthony (10/5): -
- Jonathan (9/5): - Lovely hosts. Large comfy beds. It was great fun to meet other travellers here.
- Pierrick (10/5): Super lieux de repo - Very nice place, the bed is comfortable.
It is a quiet place and hosts are kind and it was a pleasure to meet them.
They gave us very good advices to where going with our bikes around the islands.
PS: if you use e-bike, is possible to charge your battery there.
- Guillaume (9/5): -
- Millett-Spicer (10/5): Perfect - Everything Nothing
- Monique (10/5): - really nice owners!!!
- Yaara (10/5): - The hosts were kind and helpful, cozy atmosphere, we felt really calm
- Barbora (10/5): Děkuji moc hostitelům, který udělali náš pobyt v hostelu nezapomenutelným. Ráda se vrátím - Everything
- Sue (8/5): - We stayed in the family room which was perfect for our family of four.
Owners were friendly and helpful. A 15 minute ride from the Shinamani kaido and slightly out of town.
Awkward set up of family room as needed to change slippers and go through a common room then downstairs to access kitchen and showers.
Towels not included.
- Graham (10/5): A fun place to stay for cyclists! - It was conveniently located halfway along our route between Imabari and Onomichi. The hostel was clean, and there was a nice kitchen with a microwave, fridge freezer etc. The owners were very friendly and helpful.

- John (8/5): - Place was good for a one night stay during the shimanami kaido bike trip. Staff were nice and helpful. We stayed in the semi private room and it was sufficient for us to rest. Shared bathroom and showers were good. The place has lots of shared spaces to eat and small kitchen. Thin walls and close quarters so can be disturbed by noise from others. The place was a bit out of the way from the main route but maybe like 10 mins extra each way. Not a lot of food options around and they close early (before 6pm) but this can be said of the whole Omishima island.
- Bryant (10/5): - Great location for the halfway point of the Shimanami Kaido
- Miyuki (8/5): -
- Margaret (10/5): The young couple who run this guesthouse have added many nice touches such as free ice tea and a well organized kitchen - This is a charming, tidy guesthouse conveniently located quite close to the Shimanami Kaido bike route. The hosts were very kind and went out of their way to enable us to charge up our e-bike batteries. They have done a lovely job of setting up a comfortable place which is clean and affordable. I have no complaints.
- Bronwen (10/5): - Beautifully refurbished and really comfortable beds after a full day of biking, really clean and good amenities. Hosts are really lovely and accommodating - had lots of recommendations for things to do in the area for food and the rest of our bike trip. Just a fyi: things in the area can close early as it is a small town - this is very normal for smaller towns. We were happy we got there earlier and were then able to go to dinner in a local seafood restaurant
- William (10/5): -
- Soik Fong (9/5): - We have a comfortable and good rest after one day cycling. Owner even provided laundry + dry service with a small charge to the guest. NIL
