Guest Reviews
- Rachel (8/5): Beautiful and cosy cottage in a great location - Very beautiful with really intentional and considered decor, think historical and classical but also luxe and cosy. Fantastic location for exploring Rye. Private parking was super handy. Appreciated the inclusion of coffee and the use of eco-friendly products. Kitchen has all needed basics. A few more practical touches are needed, eg places to hang towels near the sink, better lighting especially near mirrors and in the bathroom (where one window near the loo needs to have the curtain drawn most of the time for privacy), more plug sockets, and a shower curtain that doesn’t partly fall into the bath when being used. Some surfaces were quite dusty.
- Luke (10/5): Incredible location, property and friendly host - Everything - location, cleanliness, asethetics. Host said he sent through a welcome back, but didn't get the link in the Booking.com chat, via email or any other means that I could think would be sent, so might have been a glitch. But very responsive on text and was sorted straight away!
- Stuart (9/5): Cosy cottage in central location - A great cosy old cottage for a couple or a lone traveller. A lot of effort has been put into the interior with some really nice touches to give you a true sense of the history of the building. It is also a very central location, getting around Rye from here was easy.
- N (9/5): I have to come back - Really beautiful and cozy interior, felt like home.
- jo (10/5): Cosy bolthole in lovely Rye - Great location, car parking, lovely interiors, cosy cottage for two. Good communication with owner who was very helpful. Nothing
- Spencer (9/5): - The location of the property was excellent - right in the centre of Rye. In addition the building and interior decor was outstanding. An impressively curated house. The weather was poor.
- Richard (10/5): -
- Maxine (8/5): Magical, I absolutely loved it. - Location, the amazing copper bath, the decor, it was wonderful to experience Rye in the evening, so picturesque, atmospheric & historical.
Loved St Mary’s church, dogs can go in there too.
Alex the host was charming & was so helpful with all my silly questions 😃. The only negative is no dishwasher, I hate washing up!
- Yolanda (10/5): A beautifully restored cottage in the heart of Rye - full of charm, comfort and exquisite detail. - Our stay was incredibly comfortable. Alex has an impeccable eye for detail and has restored the cottage to an outstanding standard, furnishing it with a carefully curated mix of industrial style, 19th-century Italian antiques, modern pieces, and rustic vintage charm. Somehow this eclectic combination all blends perfectly to create a cosy, romantic atmosphere, enhanced by soft colours and bespoke lighting. The attention to detail everywhere is just exquisite. The only thing we didn't like was having to pack our bags and hand back the keys! We would have happily moved in permanently and are already considering a return visit sometime in the future.
- Michael (10/5): Relaxing retreat - Beautiful cottage The bath was extraordinary.
- Paul (8/5): Charming place - N/A
- karen (9/5): Great location; quirky cottage; cosy ❤️ - Location
Bath
Accessories Nothing … there was an issue with the internet that prevented us from streaming any tv and used lots of data … but Alex kept us informed.
- Tracey (8/5): Had a lovely stay would definitely go back … Nothing was to much trouble for Alex the host - The location and parking space The position of the appliances difficult to use in current location
- Andrew (9/5): Amazing location iand a beautiful, historic cottage - Beautiful property inside and out. Fantastic attention to detail with the interior design. Great location. As you would expect with a property of this age, can get a little bit cold at times but that’s a minor issue, especially due to the fantastic log burner.
- Jonjo (9/5): -
- Kelsey (9/5): A stylish and cosy cottage on a cobbled street in the heart of Rye made for a wonderful weekend away - The location couldn't have been more central or picturesque - we loved the cosy and chic style of the cottage, which was a fantastic home base for exploring Rye and Rye Harbour.
- Michael (9/5): -
- Brian (10/5): Great central location with parking, yet also quiet. Thoroughly recommend. - Great central location. Alex had given great thought to this lovely cottage, was keen to help, and a delightful host. Loved his interior style.
- James (10/5): This is a beautifully decorated cottage in a perfect location in a perfect town - enjoy your stay! -
- Dean (10/5): Alex is a lovely host and his cottage is a credit to his design and interior business. - Quirky little cottage which has been furnished and decorated so well by the owner. Perfect location. It’s not nearer home!
- Kirsty (10/5): A wee bit of heaven on earth - Everything!
Superb location, gorgeous interior, exceptional host. Couldn't have wished for more. Exceeded expectations. Cannot fault a single thing. Alex, the host, was simply amazing! Can't wait to return! Zero. Everything was blissful.
- Taylor (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent retreat from the hustle and bustle of life and relax in a totally different vibe The atmosphere history and central location
- Sian (9/5): A wonderful cosy cottage in a fantastic location. - The location was perfect so central and convenient for all Rye had to offer.
The cottage was beautifully decorated and cosy. A lovely place to unwind. The private outdoor space an extra bonus.
Alex was a great host and it was a special treat to have a look in the Monastery next door.
The kitchen like the rest of the cottage is small, that is part of its charm, but that’s not a problem as there are lots of lovely places to eat just moments from the front door. We have already recommended Monastery cottage to family and friends.
- Jill (9/5): Wonderful -
- Vladislav (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (10/5): Exceptional -
- Suzy (10/5): The best cottage stay ever! - Sumptuous decor comfy bed glorious setting All good
- Katy (9/5): Great location, sweet little cottage, full of charm and character. - Beautifully designed and decorated. Full of character and charm. Outside space and parking a real bonus. Fridge freezer has seen better days and wasn’t clean. No power points upstairs except a four gang one under the bed. Everything else perfection for a two night stay!
- Flora (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely property, ideal location in Rye. Decorated and furnished beautifully. N/A
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional - An experience that met and exceeded all my exceptions. Host Alex was responsive, thoughtful, and genuinely committed to making us feel welcome.
- Justine (10/5): Quant cottage in heart of everything with extraordinary quality stylish interior - Stylish interior, quality feel throughout and perfect central location, with a parking space. Sofa a little uncomfortable and creaky floorboards upstairs.
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional - The house was charming and beautifully furnished. It instantly felt like home.
The location was perfect, very close to the centre of town but quiet and secluded.
- Mark (10/5): It’s a lovely property, beautifully designed and right in the centre of Rye. -
- Serena (10/5): The most incredible interior. - Goodness, Alex‘s cottage is exceptional. From the central location, through to the Check-in experience through to the incredible decoration inside. If you are an antique lover, you will love this little gem. The bath is to die for! Honestly Alex has thought through every single little detail.
- Claire (9/5): Superb -
- Carol (9/5): Superb -
- Robert (10/5): Delightful - It is exquisite Nothing
- Emma (10/5): The most stunning cottage for a getaway - The decor was so luxurious and felt really special. Perfect location to explore Rye and amazing to have a parking space right in the centre of town. Totally beautiful cottage. The wood burner which was ready and waiting to be lit was a lovely welcome bonus.
- Julie (9/5): Lovely cottage in great location - This stylish little cottage is in an excellent location with parking
The bed is very comfortable.
The kitchen is well equpped It was very cold upon arrival in Dec .
We were promised a free bag of wood as compensation for a broken light which made the bathroom very dark - this never materialised!
I messaged the owner on the first morning with a pleasant message sadly he chose not to respond at all .
Its a real shame that these easily rectified things marred an otherwise loveky cottage and stay
- Harriet (9/5): Superb -
- Jennifer (10/5): Exceptional -
- Antony (7/5): Very enjoyable - Overall most things were excellent except the remarks below Property is quite draughty, bed is on the small side for someone who’s 6 foot and we found the rustling of the bedding quite annoying, also the loose floorboards need fixing
- Susanna (9/5): Beautiful small period cottage in excellent location - Lovely central location in historic town
- Tim (10/5): Exceptional - Wonderful decor, excellent layout and great position. Would recommend highly
- John (10/5): A step into an artist's vision - What a great and unique place to stay! The interior is beautiful and striking, a design that's alive and personal. Alex is a wonderful host, and we'd love to visit again. Nothing - this place is very special. The location is excellent.
- Marjorie (9/5): I would stay there again as it is so unique and local to all the sites. Enjoyed our perfect weekend away! - The interior design was impeccable and very unique. The bed was very comfortable. The location was very ideal for anyone wanting a mini break to explore Rye and its surroundings. Just a slight glitch—the thermostat needed new batteries and we struggled getting heating on as we had a brief cold front that weekend. But the owner was at the end of a text message to guide us.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional - The cottage is beautifully decorated. There are wonderful books on art and many copies of World of Interiors magazine to enjoy looking through in the sitting room. The bedroom is esquisite with a very comfortable bed, the bathroom regal, the kitchen has everything you would need and looks out onto a Mediterranean garden. Although a cottage, it manages to feel both cosy and decadent....it is sublime.
- Louisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Steven (10/5): A fantastic stay in a beautiful cottage with an exceptional host - Monastery Cottage is a wonderful place to stay, in the perfect location and Alex is an excellent host. The digital guide recommendations were so helpful in finding great places to visit and dine.
- Natasha (10/5): Exceptional - Beautifully decorated cottage. Spotlessly clean, with everything you could possibly need.
- Julia (10/5): Exceptional - Fantastic central location with parking provided, and well equipped with everything you need (hairdryer, iron, shampoo& conditioner etc.)
- Martin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): Absolutely fabulous. - The Monastery Cottage is just beautiful. An 18th-century house attached to a medieval monastery (decommissioned), every room is cozy and charming in its own way. The furnishings and decorations are all elegant and tasteful (for example, pretty much every metallic item in the cottage has a brass- or copper-coloured finish, even down to the cutlery!). The bathroom is huge and has a luxurious bath/shower tub. The kitchen is very well appointed and has a suburb oven/stove range if you are doing your own cooking (recommended to shop at the wonderful Rye fish market...). The back yard is a wonderful place for morning coffee, lunch or dinner. Finally, the cottage is right in the centre of Rye, so the location is perfect. Alex was a perfect host, responsive and very polite. The natural light inside the house is not the most abundant, but that is part of the 'Georgian cottage' feel. The backyard is so light and wonderful, though, that this really does not matter. The lock box for the keys--like every lock box I have ever encountered--is a little fiddly, so that may take a few tries to open.
- Nico (10/5): Stay here if you like atmospheric and historic buildings. Extremely peaceful and beautiful cottage. -
- Alison (10/5): Two nights - really enjoyable - great host - A really unique place to stay - very special and added to the special character of Rye
- Swan (10/5): It was our wedding anniversary and it was great to stay in those surroundings - Everything! It made a great change to live in such an atmospheric place, if only for a couple of days. It was right in the centre of Rye so there was no need to walk miles for restaurants and pubs. We couldn't find any cutlery so bought some from the local supermarket
- Graham (10/5): Loved The Cottage! It couldn’t be more perfect 😊 - Everything was perfect! We loved the cottage.
All the furnishings were so beautiful, and everything in the cottage was so breathtaking!
Close to all so many cafes, pubs, and restaurants it is in such a central location.
Took our dog, and the courtyard garden and the cottage were perfect for him too!
- Dillingham (10/5): I am hoping I can return again; it was a lovely end to my holiday/vacationz - It was stunningly beautiful, a great location and the hosts made sure everything was ready for me. N/A
- Marcus (10/5): We had a perfect stay here . It’s a beautifully renovated cottage with such a unique feel of peace . - Met Alex who handed over the keys and explained about the property and near by restaurants etc . Also we received all the information prior to check in and that was really helpful. The private garden is a peaceful oasis and to open the back door and see an amazing Italian designed garden attached to the Monastery, seriously made us think we could be in Rome.
Alex was the perfect host and was on hand if we needed anything. The cottage is really a credit to all the hard work Alex has put in to making it a magical place .
You know how much we appreciated the time there .
Thank you Alex you and the property were perfect .
April and Marcus Absolutely nothing , other than we wished we owned the cottage !
- Colin (9/5): Superb -
- Lloyd (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lyndon (9/5): Superb - Very comfortable, atmospheric and great location. Host very helpful.
- Stephen (9/5): Superb -
- Kanchan (9/5): Beautiful cottage with a vintage vibe - Nice location. Lovely cottage in the alley of the High Street. Cute small backyard. Loved the jazz bar next door which even allowed our two dogs to join in the fun. And Rye waterworks across the street was perfect after a long day at the beach. Heard the sushi is good too but they don’t allow dogs so sadly we couldn’t try it out. The bed is a bit too bouncy and getting in and out of the bathtub can be challenging, especially for me as I have a weak back. Otherwise the place was perfect and cozy. Just what we wanted.
- Joanne (10/5): Sublime! Perfect little cottage. - Wow what a fabulous little find. Perfect for the centre of Rye and close to all the shops, pubs and restaurants. The interior is amazing, so much thought has gone into decorating and furnishing. Everything is catered for. Loved it!
- Lucy (9/5): Amazing location right in the heart of Rye and beautiful cottage to stay in. - Beautiful interiors and perfect location The bed linen
- Eric (10/5): Wonderful, luxurious, cozy, opulent and such a wonderful postirined property to explore Rye and everything it has to off - Alex was easy to get hold of and very responsive to queries. Super secure garden for our dog which was wonderful. All furnishings were quality and luxury. Devine bathroom and you feel completely spoilt and the wood burner was to die for with its central position and open to both rooms downstairs. We loved this!! The only thing for us was such a personal thing but the bed was so luxury and in keeping with the well thought out design and in keeping with the history of the building but for us it was was too soft and squishy. We both have back issues and prefer a harder bed plus the wonderfully old springs we’re creaky and woke us up when we moved in the bed. This would not stop us from booking again as it was lovely but couldn’t stay more than 2 nights due to our own back health issues🎉
- Chris (7/5): Good - Location
Some of the interiors Bed, lighting in bathroom, proper fridge, lack of dishwasher, comfortable seating in snug.
- William (10/5): A Jewel in Rye. - An incredible place to stay right at the heart of Rye. Every detail considered in design of the cottage to providing a handy guide for the local area to unlock the best local secrets. Also extremely cosy and relaxing. We can't wait to return soon.
- Naomi (10/5): Exceptional - My husband and I thought 25 years together is a little bit special so we planned a weekend away. We chose Rye as it wasn’t too far from our North Kent Coast home and because I had just finished Alex Preston’s book Winchelsea and I am pretty obsessed with the whole area. The accommodation needed to be comfortable, cosy and close to town, the kind of place you would love to hang out in when the weather turns on your late February anniversary.
Monastery Cottage really was an amazing find, it exceeded all our expectations. The interiors are incredibly beautiful, there is an attention to detail in aesthetics, comfort and utility that makes the space very special. You can feel the love! When the bad weather did roll in we were very happy to enjoy some R and R in the snug. The log burner and eclectic selection of coffee table books adding to the cosy atmosphere. If I had to choose a favourite room then it would have to be the bathroom, the bath is absolutely glorious! But the bedroom is also beautifully romantic and just lovely. The kitchen is very charming as well as functional, it also made me feel a little smug about my own collection of gold cutlery.
The location is great too. All of Rye’s lovely shops, galleries and eateries are a stone’s throw away and there is even a champagne and jazz bar on the doorstep. The local area did not disappoint. I even visited a few locations in the book in Rye and beyond! We would absolutely love to come back.
- Serena (10/5): Luxurious, unique and never boring! - Extraordinary - unique and beautiful down to the last detail. Alex has created something very special here, which has their personality and creativity running strongly through it all, whilst being very welcoming and cosy. The decoration and furnishings are luxurious and restful, with shades of dusky pink and blue green, accented with warm copper: from the kitchen utensils and appliances to the regal bath. The double-sided woodburner added to the atmosphere. The location is perfect: on a quiet cobbled hill right off the High Street, close to independent shops, historic pubs and great restaurants (The Fig, The Union) and next to a wine/jazz bar (but no noise escapes!) And the wonderful Camber Sands (where I enjoyed a chilly dip) is just a ten minute drive (or 1 h 10 m walk) away. Not staying longer
- Claire (10/5): The most beautiful setting, perfectly situated in the centre of Rye with private parking. - Location was perfect.
- Kathryn (10/5): Cosy cottage - Beautiful cottage in a superb location. Perfect for 2
Very cosy when snuggled in with the log burner going.
- Chloe (10/5): Wes Anderson meets British cottage, with centuries of history - utter perfection - Monastery cottage is a simply stunning little gem of a place. It's rather like walking into a quirky character's home in a movie - one that instantly causes deep feelings of envy and yearning! It was such a treat to be able to spend a few days here, and I'm not at all embarrassed to say that we ran around the cottage like excited children after we opened that door for the first time.
Alex's incredible talent for interior design makes Monastery Cottage eclectic yet cohesive. The beautiful copper colour way, continued through copper-pink and verdigris green paint, down to copper cutlery and utensils - oh, and that bathroom! Oh, that bathroom... Many times, a property where there has been so much careful curation can feel intimidating - this is absolutely not the case here. We instantly felt at home, relaxed and extremely welcome.
Our three nights went very quickly, and we will certainly be back. I've even switched my shampoo to the brand Alex leaves for his guests - it was all that perfect. We were also lucky enough to meet Alex in his studio next door to the cottage on a rare Open-door Saturday - truly the nicest man. The staircase is extremely tight going up from the kitchen - don't take very large suitcases! Also, be careful when showering to arrange the shower curtains correctly to avoid the water escaping through the joins. Or, just lounge in the bath!
- The (10/5): The sort of accommodation that Instagram was created for. - Staying at Monastery Cottage is a truly unique experience. The design and attention to detail is the work of a location professional at the top of his game. I would return just to use the bath again! The situation of the cottage - in the centre of Rye - is perfect. The reserved parking space We were delighted by everything.
- Gerard (10/5): Suffice to say we plan to be back - A fantastic unique property in an excellent location. Although the weather was poor the house more than made up for it and was a a perfect retreat from the rain. Authentic property with an enormous attention to detail. Dog friendly with its own courtyard garden. Nothing
- Shelagh (10/5): Exceptional - The cottage is perfect. The decor is so beautiful- every little touch is perfectly judged and sympathetic to the history. You’ll find yourself taking snaps of every corner. The bathroom is a real showstopper. It’s bang in the middle of town, just off the high street, a stones throw from everything. And, of course, the town is amazing. A perfect place for a romantic winter getaway. Alex was so kind and hospitable - if he’s doing monastery tours when you stay, do take him up on it - such a beautiful space.
- Mark (10/5): Beautiful property and perfect location. - Stunning property central location attentive host the perfect place to stay.
- Beverley (10/5): Cosy opulence & super romantic beautifully curated interiors - Beautiful cosy interiors curated by Alex with a real attention to detail. It has the ultimate romantic bathroom with huge double ended brass bath. Great location in the centre of rye.
- Nikki (8/5): Peaceful relaxing break - Quirky cottage,Amazing decor, beautiful surroundings. Fantastic host
- Allison (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (10/5): Perfect - All aspects of the accommodation exceeded our expectations. Beautiful. The bath in particular was a stunning feature N/A
- Isabelle (9/5): Cute cottage stay in the centre of Rye - Perfect location, great communication with Alex - the property owner. So cute! Mattress to the bed could use a little upgrade.
- Mat (10/5): Opulent, calm, tasteful - Stunning cottage right in the heart of Rye, but also down a quiet side street. Impeccably designed and considered by the brilliant host Alex. Bravo. Zero
- Julie (10/5): We can thoroughly recommend the stunning Monastery cottage for a unique Rye experience - The cottage is friendly and uniquely decorated. It is spotlessly clean and exceptionally well equipped. The shingle garden area is private and completely dog safe(we have two terriers that are very good at escaping)with lovely garden furniture and plant features and views of the monastery next door. There is a wine bar next door but absolutely no noise that disturbed us.The cottage is central to almost everything you would like to see but be aware there are a lot of cobbled streets so wear the right shoes 😀.Visiting the nature reserve was fantastic and many places are dog friendly. The only small issue we had was the stairs are very steep and would be a real challenge for anyone with impaired mobility and there is only one bannister.
- Alan (9/5): Superb -
- Joanne (9/5): Beautiful cottage - The cottage was beautiful. I loved the way that it had been styled. All the furnishings were beautiful and of high quality, even all the kitchen implements. Our host was friendly and attentive. It's in the centre of town and so all the amenities are on your doorstep The bed wasn't particularly comfortable and I don't think that there was any WiFi
