• Jeremy (8/5): Decent budget option short walk from slopes. - not too far to slopes (maybe 500m up slight hill), comfortable room (tatami and futon). decent onsen (simple but effective), reasonable breakfast, effective (but a little bit rough) drying room, vending machines for beers, drinks and snacks. Good laundromat. Pretty views out to the valley got a bad stink of kerosene? when it got windy - the staff told us the wind can blow back through flus and cause this. My tip - turn of your oil heater and ask for a plug in electric - the stink was pretty bad and one of my friends got headaches from it!

• ChingChun (8/5): Highly recommended. - Staff are frequently described as kind, welcoming and helpful. Renting ski equipment here is very inexpensive; even though the gear is outdated and old. The food selection was limited, and the overall flavor was somewhat underwhelming.

• Trevor (8/5): - Despite the language barrier, staff were super friendly and patient. Breakfast and dinner available on request. On site Public bath/onsen available for use. Location was good, not too far to walk to main ski area, and lots of restaurant/dining places nearby. We chose to experience the Japanese room with futons. Very cosy and not the most comfortable option, would have much preferred a western room with a bed. However still enjoyed the experience!

• Mike (8/5): We visited Madarao from New Zealand during the first week of January. We had a great time! We are a family of four — two - The location is fantastic. 5min walking time to the slopes. Service and the hotel staff is so nice! If there are some problems or requests they are solved very quickly. The hotel sometimes does even more, beyond the clients expectations. We forgot to book a taxi in advance to get to the train station for the train to the airport and all the taxi cars in the different companies were booked. The hotel helped us to get to the station next morning! There was nothing we didn’t like. Everything was exactly as described and expected.

Nice to have kettle and sink in room. Short walk to ski lift. Stairs narrow and tricky with luggage. 2 floors down to bathroom. Property is a little old and tired.

• Tew (10/5): Overall, this was an excellent stay with fantastic service, comfortable rooms, and genuinely good food. - We had a wonderful stay at Madarao Lainstons Hotel and would highly recommend it, especially for families! Service was outstanding from start to finish. Communication via Booking.com was quick and friendly, with all our questions answered promptly. Upon arrival, the staff explained the food options, ordering process, and cost breakdown for our booking clearly (while patiently using Google Translate 😊). We accidentally booked one day less, and she immediately helped us find another room and made the transition seamless. She was always fast, warm, and attentive, such as offering us larger slippers without us asking. Facilities & rooms: The rooms were very clean, spacious, and comfortable, with radiators providing good temperature control for winter. Plenty of hangers were provided, along with towels, cups, and a kettle in the room. The shared showers were clean and well-equipped, with an onsen, hairdryers (both small and large towels provided in your room). The front desk area also has a microwave, and cup noodles are available for purchase. (If needed, a neighbouring hotel has a convenience store selling some bread, noodles, drinks, and snacks) Ski rental: Ski rental is extremely affordable (¥1,500 per person per day for skis, plus ¥550 for a helmet). While the equipment is more worn and not top-tier quality, it’s still great value for its price and suitable for beginners. Staff will help with fitting and are really patient with letting you find a suitable size for boots and helmet. Food was a highlight of our stay. We tried almost all the dinner options and every meal was delicious, with free-flow rice. Dinner Options: • ¥1,500 Tonkatsudon (crispy, juicy pork cutlet — excellent) • ¥1,500 Katsudon • ¥2,000 Pork Shabu Shabu • ¥3,000 Beef Shabu Shabu • ¥2,000 Pork Sukiyaki (our favourite! It was quite a walk from the Madarao Ski Resort, which was unavoidable. The ski DIN release tension was also set too high for my mother (at 4), so we had to lower it on the second day.
