Guest Reviews
- Eileen (7/5): We enjoyed our stay, the weather was amazing for the time of year. The Garden was a grt asset and a - The location was excellent. More crockery, barely enough for the six of us, (the house is advertised for 8) what there was was very heavy, not sufficient bowls for six. A working dishwasher, we used it once and had to wash everything by hand as it hadn't done its job. Better heating, we were at times cold even with the heaters on.
- Julie (8/5): excellent holiday, the farmhouse gave us a good base to explore this beautiful Island. - Well equipped, good location, spacious, good enclosed garden for the dog. Beds comfortable. Sticky surfaces on arrival and lots of spiders/cobwebs. Heating just about adequate and it wasn’t that cold! Blue couch uncomfortable.
- TAMSIN (9/5): A large holiday home in a fabulous location. - There is so much to like about Calgary Farmhouse. Communication between the owner and ourselves was very good in the lead up to our stay, and we knew exactly what to expect and how to access the house.
On arrival, there was a very welcome bottle of wine, biscuits, fresh flowers from the garden, and some complimentary logs, which saw us through the first two nights - we bought more in Dervaig ( expensive, especially when you consider the island is covered in woodland!). All important information, including emergency contact numbers, was supplied.
A very good oven and hob allowed us to cook with ease. The kitchen was well equipped.
The location is superb. It is a stone's throw from the beautiful white sands of Calgary Bay. It is also on the doorstep of some of Mull's most spectacular walks. The Treshnish Headland walk gives stunning views of the Treshnish islands whilst the hike on Calgary headland takes in several abandoned villages and many deer.
The village of Dervaig is a 10 to 15 minute drive away depending on animals and cars taking up the road! Here, you will find a local store, which supplies basic needs - doing a food shop on the mainland before getting the ferry is essential!
We were on Mull during a significant storm with gale force winds. The house was wind and water tight and kept power throughout.
The house is spacious and has good WiFi in most areas of the house. Due to the storm, some of our family didn't make it to Mull. We used both doubles and one bed in the twin. There is a single bed on the ground floor, which we would have had to use had there been no storm but it is an odd set up with only a curtain to separate it from the main living room. I would have felt uncomfortable sleeping there, but others may feel differently.
There are three shower rooms and a bathroom. Two of the shower rooms are quite small and you feel as though you are in a wooden cupboard. The best shower was off the odd single bedroom on the ground floor. There is no shower in the bathroom. It was fine but not as comfortable as some holiday homes. You need to set up a shower rota to ensure everyone has hot water. Again, not a huge issue except after a long day on a muddy hike!
The larger of the two sofas has seen better days. If you pile on the cushions, it is fine but not very comfortable without them! We took it in turns to sit on it!
£80 is allocated to cover the cost of electricity during the week. This is clearly explained at the time of booking, before arrival, and in the information left at the house. That is all fine, but there is no smart meter, which we could find, and no way to track our usage. We do not live in the UK, so we have nothing to gauge energy use by. We are now awaiting to hear whether or not there is an additional payment to be made. There is a lot of trust here.
- Tessa (10/5): Lovely stay in large and comfortable house minutes from Calgary bay - Fantastic location with Calgary beach a few minutes walk from the house.
Spacious house with everything we needed.
Helpful hosts The WiFi broke for a day, but to be honest we quite enjoyed being disconnected for a bit!
Otherwise, nothing.
- Nicola (9/5): A lovely inviting house just a few minutes from one of the most beautiful beaches on earth! - The location is amazing, just a few hundred metres from one of the most stunning beaches in the world, with lots of incredible walking right outside the front door. Having the cafe, art gallery and sculpture walk just next door means you don't feel entirely cut off from the world and have somewhere to go without having to drive! The house was cosy, inviting, with everything we needed for a group of 7 visitors with plenty of space in the kitchen, dining room and living room, which was kept warm with a very effective wood burner. We loved it and would definitely return. The main sofa in the living room was a bit cranky and on its last legs but the owner had already told us she is replacing it and getting a new one soon. The single bedroom downstairs is off the living room and only has a curtain, not a door, so if other guests stay up longer than the person it that room it doesn't feel entirely private and may be noisy. Luckily the person in our group who used that room was the one who stayed up the latest each night.
