Guest Reviews
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Helen (4/5): Disappointing hotel - Lovely dinner in the hotel breakfast. The bed was really big and very comfortable. They were also very good at accommodating my food intolerances. We stayed for just one night as a celebrratuon. Our first room on the top floor had no window only skylights so we couldn't see the lovely views we were promised by the hotel website. We were moved to another room on the ground floor that looked out onto a grass bank about 5 metres from the window, so still no view. We had no hot water on the day of check out and no time for it to be sorted before check out time. We doscovered the hot water was also an issue with some other guests. Inexperienced restaurant staff forgot to give us menus, wine list and steak knives at dinner and menus at breakfast. Despite the hotel manager working in the bar and restaurant area at dinner amd breakfast it felt like we were an inconvenience for complaining about the room and did not receive the level of customer service we expect from a 4 star hotel. There was certainly no grovelling apology though we did receive a partial refund after putting in a formal complaint after we'd left. The hotel grounds were full.of tall tees and private lodges all of which obscured the views of Exmoor that the hotel prides itself with on its website. This hotel definitely has ideas above its station and did not feel anything like the website suggested it would be.
- John (9/5): - Everything was lovely, food, staff and chalet

- Steven (10/5): -
- Jason (7/5): A peaceful spot to rest and relax. - Very helpful and accommodating staff. Provided a light bite option for me off-menu for dinner. Lovely breakfast. As a walker, access was only possible from the A Road.
- Dennis (9/5): A great stay, wish we were there longer. Above expectations, extremely relaxing &very friendly staff - Kentisbury Grange is a fantastic country house and grounds with a beautiful pond, all immaculately kept. The room had luxurious fittings and a very comfortable bed. We didn't hear a thing all night. Unfortunately the central heating didn't switch on but fortunately there was a backup electric radiator which did the job admirably. The restaurant had a limited menu as one would expect but was very good with a great selection of wines etc. Definitely stay here next time we are in the area. There is also a resident otter but he keeps well out of the way, concentrating on the pond no doubt! Nothing.
- Tracey (10/5): Beautiful property with stunning grounds. Staff very friendly. Luxury without any stuffiness! - Lovely breakfast just the right amount to energise us for a long day walking also were supplied with lots of toast and drinks throughout which is really unusual these days and much appreciated. Weather was a bit cold! 😆
- Ian (4/5): This rooms need updating and deep cleaning - The property is set in a beautiful location . Staff were helpful but seemed not to know what was going on due to management changes. Unfortunately the room that we were given had mold in a corner of the room up the wall next to the bed and the blinds were covered in mold too. I lifted both mattress protectors and there were black bits and also long black hairs too. We reported to manager who said the room was cleaned this morning . The manager offered a free meal but we declined and left. We had stayed at this accommodation about two years previously and had a lovely time. We were very disappointed and then had to go and find somewhere else to stay at a further cost of 100 pounds to us.
- Keith (6/5): A mixed bag at best - The bathroom in the room we ended up in (a cottage suite) was mostly very good. Spacious shower and generally clean. Towelling robes very very good. On arrival the key for the garden suite we had been allocated could not be found. After about 3/4 of an hour waiting we were shown to the allocated suite which was open but still no key. We therefore could not leave the room or move our bags in. The room itself was certainly not worth what we had paid per night. After a total of over an hour we were moved to a cottage suite which probably was worth what we had paid. On a short break every hour is pecious and this was not a very professional start by the property which then proceeded to be the feeling for most of our stay. Apologies but still a feeling of the staff being way too laid back for what bills itself a four star property. Overall the site is tired and three star at best I would say from my travel experience. Breakfast took a long time to arrive, bacon was dry, toasted english muffin barely shown to the toaster. We paid more for this stay than most others in the past. We did not get extra quality for the extra money.
- Mark (9/5): Charming, quiet & relaxing stay. - A lovely setting with stunning grounds. Very relaxing and calming atmosphere around the place. The staff were ever so lovely and helpful. Mark (the owner I believe) even gave us a room upgrade to a cottage suite which had all the facilities you could need and more. Dinner and Breakfast were bother very tasty. We took the dog with us and nowhere was off limits and she received attention from every member of staff. Nothing, just wish we’d had time to use the hot tub!
- Joanne (10/5): -
- Glenda (5/5): Room good, hot tub and food not so good - Comfy bed, spacious room, large bathroom and good shower. Hot tub was tucked away under a large tree and couldn’t see over the wall for the view. Had to go off decking and into muddy area to reach the tub and slippers were not provided.
Food was nothing like the photos on the site. Limited menu and just basic food. The Latin night tapas was not very nice at all and very expensive for what it was. We would not recommend this place and for price charged we expected better.
- Jacqueline (4/5): Promised a lot; fell disappointingly short. - The grounds and setting.
The spacious room and bathroom.
Plenty of free parking.
Tranquil surroundings.
The towels and bed linen were good quality. - This is not a 4 star, luxury experience as described.
- There were too many niggling compromises in terms of facilities and resources: eg, broken fixtures and fittings; missing room items; poor quality pillows; slow draining shower.
- A lack of professionalism from the staff and an unhelpful, defensive attitude from the Manager/Owner.
- Our room was not ready when we arrived, and the hot tub flooded making it difficult to use.
- On our final day (2 nights), when we arrived for breakfast at 9.10am we were told that a full breakfast service was not available owing to planned maintenance arriving early. We were offered a light alternative of minimum standard.
- The breakfast overall was not a 4- star quality offer - buffet/continental options were not freely available (had to be requested and not all in stock)
- Having to pay the full amount in advance
- Having to pay a £20 deposit when making a Sunday lunch reservation.
- We were aware of other guests experiencing check-in issues and the staff we’re discussing these in public. This was disconcerting to witness.
- Ruby (9/5): Luxury for a great price - Nice cosy room which felt luxury and captured a country feel! Nothing
- Sarah (6/5): Very disappointed, such a shame. - The view from the bedroom was amazing as were the curtains and the large roll top bath. The bed was very comfoRtable too. I really don't like complaining but I have to say that I/we were disappointed overall. Such a shame as I had heard great things about the hotel.
I had booked the garden suite and was very much looking forward to staying in a room that was slightly different. However, as soon as we arrived we were told that we had an "upgrade" to a room with a great view and a wonderful bathroom. The reason being that the WiFi wasn't good in the garden room. The room wasn't ready so we had a drink (should have been complimentary I feel) and I was told that my glass of wine would be brought out to me. However, after fifteen minutes I had to go and remind them as it hadn't arrived. The member of staff had completely forgotten me!
Unfortunately there were a few minor things wrong with this "upgraded" room. The main light didn't work, there were no English Breakfast tea bags, only Earl Grey and berry flavour, and although a small thing the biscuits were all broken and in pieces!
The "fabulous" bathroom that we had been promised wasn't so fabulous though. The blind at the window was broken, one set of ceiling lights didn't work, one light above the basins didn't work and one had a lampshade missing. I think the worst thing was the smell (boiled cabbage) and there was no hot water for a shower in the morning.......very poor.
We waited for forty five minutes for our breakfast and when it eventually arrived the bacon was burnt and my muffins were cold......such a shame.
From what I can work out when looking at prices, our "upgrade" was £15 cheaper than our original choice. That's really not good.
- delia (9/5): - Tolle Lage
Tolles Bad
Super Restaurant
Nettes Personal Spinnweben.
- Daniel (9/5): -
- philip (10/5): We will be back - Excellent place with extra excellent staff Tight on the tea bags in the room
- Laura (7/5): -
- Bethany (7/5): -
- Martin (8/5): - Unfortunately we only stayed for 1 night, but would happily return, and quite possibly will do.
The ethos of everyone at Kentisbury is to do everything possible to make your stay enjoyable. Nothing is too much trouble.
We enjoyed a lovely evening meal and hearty breakfast.
Well done to all concerned. We hadn't decided to stay longer!
- Pete (10/5): -
- John (10/5): - Everything, No complaints. The owners of the Grange were very nice and they are very hospitable. Leaving!
- Geoffrey (8/5): -
- Alison (4/5): Nice accommodation but overpriced - It is very modern and a great location The staff lack experience and it is very overpriced
- Neil (6/5): Great Place , location . - Location Cleanliness
- Admin (7/5): We had a wonderful stay at this property, it’s beautiful and nestled between some beautiful hills in North Devon. Barnst - I love the view and I love that the rooms in the whole house was tidy and clean. The managers went above and beyond to make sure that certain things that we wanted in the property were provided. The property is very old which is part of the classic style of the house. The only thing we didn’t quite like about the property was that you have to book a breakfast slot. Sometimes you just want to know the time period and be able to turn up between that time period. This was a minor though and one day we did turn up earlier and there was no problem. The property did close on a Thursday due to an event that they were having which isn’t that great for guests given that we found out about this after we had booked which means that we had to make other plans for the Thursday night and where we would eat it didn’t quite fit with the plans we already had.
- Colin (9/5): Gorgeous property very clean rooms with lovely facilities with exaptional breakfast - Gorgeous property beautiful garden Restaurant was closed on bank holiday Monday
- Carl (10/5): Absolutely wonderful team made our stay very memorable. Great location, wonderful food and 5 star service. - Lovely location. Very quiet, surrounded by lovely countryside with attractive gardens.
Despite the staff being young, which is normally a sign of less than perfect service, they were superb.
Professional, friendly, attentive and we were warmly welcomed from our arrival right through to departure.
The restaurant is excellent. Wonderful food, great atmosphere and superb service. The whole team gave us a 5 star experience. Room didn’t have a view but for the price we paid it wasn’t an issue.
- Sola Ann (8/5): Comfortable, lovely , peaceful stay , wonderful quality breakfast xx - Beautiful property , staff in the restaurant were lovely ! Would prefer earlier check in and better price on dogs for short stays .. the staff were very fussy with dogs which was nice
- Cath (7/5): Comfortable and peaceful but basic - Clean, comfortable and convenient Strange that we needed to request certain things like milk, toilet roll, toast (with a full English)
- Alison (9/5): - Room cosy, everything we needed Shape of the room. Carpet was dirty
- Sarah (9/5): - We loved the luxury feel of our room. The breakfast was top quality and we also thought the Spanish evening was fantastic The door closure on the main door to our room was broken so it made it difficult to open the door.
- Honey (1/5): Horrible please don’t stay there and forget about having a wedding there it’s totally rubbish and freezing cold and poor - The room was freezing and no lighting in the bathroom it was diminished told the staff but just don’t want to know asked to resolve but they don’t want to know don’t stay all the glasses in room are dusty and the room is freezing cold totally rubbish Poor standards
- RobParkhouse (7/5): -
- Annabel (8/5): Excellent base close to Exmoor - Very good welcome & friendly staff. Excellent room - modern, clean and well-equipped Disappointing that the restaurant was closed as this was one of our main reasons for booking, so we had to go out to a local pub for supper. We were warned in advance though and alternative recommendations offered
- Luke (9/5): Great weekend retreat - Stayed for a couple of nights great food, super friendly and helpful staff, good room. Not much, if I am being picky noise from other residents but it's an old property you have to expect that windows shutting will make some noise and gaps up doors
- Guy (10/5): It was absolutely peaceful and relaxing with lovely staff - Outstanding location I loved everything about property and will be definitely returning
- Craig (9/5): -
- Michael (5/5): Pleasant staff, but not ideal accommodation in cold weather. Possibly best when its warm and sunny - There was a wide choice for breakfast and the food was good. We booked in advance for dinner so that we could drink without a problem with drink-driving, but the restaurant shut at short notice and we had no option but to drive to find an alternative.
All the accommodation was in cabins or rooms some distance from the restaurant/reception. When it rained we needed macs and umbrellas to go for a drink or meal or to return keys.
The internal roads between cabins needed some repairs.
On arrival the cabin temperature was set low and it took some time to warm up.
- Claire (8/5): One night only - Staff helpful and very friendly. A credit to the hotel. Breakfast was delicious, grounds and location spot on. Coffee machine was very loud, I would of woke my partner if making a drink before he woke up. Weak, Luke warm and no idea what it was as no label.
No notice given on closure of restaurant. After a heavy day of driving we chose this establishment due to the availability of food on site.
Lamp not working on main table. So no way to create mood lighting. TV was a bit glitchy to watch.
- Geraldine (8/5): A lovely location ,imposing , peaceful . - Beautifully landscaped and inviting property .
Good location . The bed in room 4 was very uncomfortable , like sleeping on a hill !!
- Sarah (3/5): Unhygienic room let down friendly service and nice food. - Staff were very friendly and really helpful. Food was good. My garden suite had major cleanliness issues. Shower enclosure had mould and rust on it. Shower head had black gunk on it. Toilet pedestal was covered in human hairs. Robes were covered in dead flies. Tissue holder and sanitary bag holder empty. Very thin duvet on bed and you needed the electrical heater on max all night or it was cold. BBC1 not tuned in. Insufficient external lighting to avoid trip hazards and feel safe.
- Andrew (9/5): - Excellent food and service in a lovely restaurant.
- Debra (4/5): - Freezing room on arrival during January 🙄
No restaurant facilities…not pointed out at onset of booking. Lovely old country house. Shooting in the area. Recommended but disappointed.
Bet it’s lovely in the summer
- barrie (10/5): -
- Patrycja (9/5): Great place for a break - Hotel is located in a very quiet area, lots of places to seat outside, gardens really well maintained.
Food was delicious.
- Rosaline (10/5): - The food was exceptional and the staff amazing. The heating in the room did not work properly but there was a heater to plug in .
- Emily (10/5): -
- Gavin (10/5): -
- Honey (10/5): Brilliant lovely - The best Shower broken
- gareth (8/5): -
- Richard (8/5): - Great standard of accommodation.
Relaxing.
Peaceful. Room to hot and difficult to cool down.
- Philip (8/5): - Lovely location in north Devon. Hotel and grounds ok,
Staff most helpful. Many potholes at entrance and along driveway. Hotel running on skeleton staffing. Restaurant closed midweek, so evening meals not available.
- Stuart (9/5): Awesome Experience! - A Beautiful Location , easy to find with more than ample parking.
The room was vey large and extremely comfortable, along with a spacious bathroom with both a show and large bath tub.
Although the restaurant was close the evening we arrive we did manage to use the bar and upstairs lounge which is very impressive
Breakfast was outstanding using fantastic tasty local produce and a choice of how you want your eggs.
The Staff were absolutely brilliant nothing was an issue and always with a smile!
- Stephen (6/5): -
- Jo (5/5): Wonderful breakfast but lacking felt like standards had slipped - Breakfast was great with plenty of choice. Bed was extremely uncomfortable, had to place pillows and rolled up towels to stop ourselves rolling into the middle. Was given advanced warning but restaurant wasn’t open in the evening on one of the days which was disappointing. One female member of staff was quite rude and abrupt at reception on our arrival which put a dampener on our visit from the start.
- Simon (9/5): Ideal hotel for a country break - Quality room
Rural location
Attentive staff
Good food Nothing
- Sian (10/5): -
- Nicky (7/5): - The hot tub was fabulous but the arm that the lid sits on was broken.
No where to hang a towel or dressing gown. Was very cold inside the property when we arrived. We turned the heating up and by 9pm is was warm
Fridge- Dirty
Bedside table- Dirty
When you are paying over £200 a night you expect it to be clean.
- lauriesmb (8/5): Quiet and pleasant with excellent staff. - Peace and quiet, comfortable bed, excellent staff. The breakfasts were really good and plenty of choice. Booked the property with expectation of having evening meals in the restaurant, but on arrival was told the restaurant was not open now on weekdays.
This wasn't shown on the booking. Com website. We had to travel out to find somewhere to eat in the evenings, which I didn't want to do, and would have booked another property if I had known this when booking.
Was given a room right at the top of the grange, up 6 flights of stairs! We're in our late 60's so this was a task! Especially as we were the only guests staying there during that period.
It's a nice property but a bit run down and in need of updating in the building.
- Brooks (5/5): - Restaurant and Reception staff were excellent. Very professional, hard working and welcoming.
Restaurant was lovely and evening food was good. Afternoon Tea was poor in comparison to others in the locality.
Housekeeping was very poor. Coffee machine was dirty with the previous guests used pods left in the bin portion, body wash in the shower was empty and there was a lot of dust and unclean surfaces.
- Robert (10/5): Excellent accommodation, staff and food. I would thoroughly recommend. - Fantastic location, large comfy room, superb restaurant and very friendly staff. Absolutely nothing as everything was fantastic.
- SHARON (7/5): Was great a couple of years ago but seems to have gone astray a bit - Have stayed here many times before and always in the Garden Suites. These are excellent little units which are separate from the main house so you have no travelling noise from other rooms. The restaurant is really good, fabulous filling food for both dinner and breakfast and the new team there are also exceptionally helpful. Since we last stayed two years ago maintenance seems to have been a bit lacking. Holes that have been filled in on the walls and then not painted, mould and mildew in the shower cubicle, missing door keys on the keyring, and a TV which seems to work on the wifi, but only when the wifi is working.
- Samantha (10/5): Enjoyed it so much will definitely book again. - Such a peaceful location, room was very comfortable too N/a
- Shengzhou (6/5): -
- Julia (10/5): Fantastic stay - 10 Stars all the way, room, staff, food all excellent, would recommend and stay again. Loved the place. Nothing
- Nicky (10/5): Absolutely loved it, didn't want to leave. - Awesome food, stunning rooms and buildings. Great atmosphere in the restaurant. Friendly staff. Pet friendly. Close to Lynmouth & Lyton, the most beautiful part of Devon. Couldn't fault our stay.
- David (10/5): Perfect place to stay, relax and enjoy a Sunday evening meal. - Full of character.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Very welcoming and comfortable stay. Food in the restaurant was delicious.
- Julia (4/5): - Bar and restaurant closed
- Irene (9/5): -
- Rutger (10/5): -
- Matt (8/5): -
- Sarvani (10/5): Beautiful countryside gem - Loved everything about this place, from the rooms which were beautiful, to the grounds, the staff and the breakfast which was delicious. This will be our place to stay when staying in Barnstaple in future. Thank you Can't answer this because we loved everything
- sue (9/5): -
- Nick (9/5): Perfect - The location and staff.
- Steven (9/5): Would like to say a special thank you to Aaron/ Barry to seeing to our every need during the evening - Good breakfast with everything we needed. Good service Facilities in the room needed to be updated
- Lee (6/5): OK stay but disappointed about restaurant being closed for the evening meal. - Room was cosey and warm. Staff were very young a bit disorganized.
We had a two night stay but the restaurant was closed for our second night.
- Paul (9/5): Will return some day - Found that the staff were fantastic liked after us and the hotel was very nice and would recommend it to our friends, also the food was excellent and would hope in the future to revisit very very nice place Can’t find anything that I could complain about
- David (10/5): - Breakfast and dinner were both lovely
Staff were helpful and friendly
- Richard (8/5): -
- Linda (8/5): It was quite enjoyable set in an area that was very interesting to explore with lots of nearby National Trust properties - Location, Staff in the restaurant, Dog friendly room Our room had not been fully prepared before we arrived. There was no hand soap for the wash basins or the bath. This was provided at our request by the second evening. There was only one bathrobe and no shower cap for use in the overhead shower.
We were unable to use the T.V. because the remote did not work. We did report this but it remained unusable throughout our stay.
- Marie-France (10/5): We will come back for sure, that was amazing. - Amazing location, absolutely charming and quiet property. Good restaurant, excellent service, classic rooms are very spacious and very comfortable. Everything was absolutely perfect, moreover with a very reasonable price that included an amazing breakfast. Nothing! Everything was perfect.
- Kent (10/5): Best short break away this year by far - What a Gem of a find . A very quiet peaceful area . Room was absolutely superb The Staff were all brilliant The chefs food was amazing I can’t personally fault anything it was excellent . We had the extra option of a hot tub If you can get it take it was excellent Absolutely nothing could not fault anything for us on this stay would highly recommend 👍
- John (7/5): - Large, comfortable room No food on Monday. Very little food in the area (for many miles) on a Monday either. Not good for a four star country house hotel with a large restaurant and well-known chef.
- Debbie (8/5): -
- Kimberley (4/5): Disappointed - Breakfast fine
Service poor I booked and paid for a hot tub room, but the heating in that room was not working, so we had to be moved late at night. The alternative room did not include the private hot tub we paid for, and the outdoor hot tub we were told to use was cold and covered in leaves, so it was unusable. We were left freezing and without the main feature we booked the stay for. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. Empty restaurant, no atmosphere. Dogs in the restaurant so little point dressing up for dinner. A massive disappointment
- Sam (10/5): - Fantastic room, friendly staff, beautiful place, amazing breakfast
- Robert (8/5): Was disappointed having checked out the menus and read the reviews saying the food was excellent to find that for our th - Lovely location But slightly remote
- Nicola (8/5): Some shortcomings but even so, excellent value for money. - Attractive setting and grounds and welcoming adjacent restaurant, doubling as a reception check in. Large bed and good bathroom. Best full English breakfast i’ve ever had, in any hotel, anywhere. Vegetarian full English also excellent. Friendly staff but perhaps not enough of them. In context, very good value for money. Rooms (in the grange building) were rather gloomy and decor a bit tired. Although there is a small reception desk in the old grange, it is unmanned and gives the place a rather neglected impression. As such the building (unlocked front door) and rooms didn’t feel very secure. The guest sitting room (although lovely to have) had uncleared coffee cups etc all day and without a lit fire felt sad and unwelcoming. Communication with hotel prior to arrival very poor with no response to two messages sent - nor any confirmation from hotel itself of the actual booking. Shower gel went unreplenished for entire stay. Overall, the place feels in need of some tlc and a few adjustments would make a big difference.

- Reeves (6/5): Okay....perhaps wouldn't rush back - Breakfast was good, chose not to eat there in the evening as only wanted a snack and the menu didn't accommodate that, as it only offered larger main meals. Requested a room with a bath, told the only option was a £50 room upgrade, which in a virtually empty hotel seem crazy.
