Guest Reviews
- alia (10/5): Will be back! - My friend and I stayed here for one evening. We chose this location because it was close to the airport but still had the feeling of being outside of a busy area. We were greeted by the owner who was very kind and helpful when we were looking for places to eat! The sleeping mats were more comfortable than expected! The space was super clean and the bathroom had anything you would need, if you forgot anything. There was a grocery store close by and a few restaurants! Overall this was a very relaxing and great stay! Will be back!

- Mayer (10/5): - Very nice Ryokan. Large rooms. Clean. Quiet. Very kind owners. Very good price-quality.
- Yvonne (10/5): -
- Serena (10/5): It was overall a great way to end our trip in Japan in a small town and lovely Ryokan. - Meiko was friendly. Convenient stores and restaurants within walking distance. Pretty easy to get to via bus from the airport. Had a great night sleep there.
- Mukhabbat (10/5): A wonderful place with wonderful hosts. Highly recommended. We'll be back again. - A wonderful place with wonderful hosts. There are so many beautiful sights and supermarkets nearby. I highly recommend stopping here before your flight from Narita. You can finish shopping for souvenirs and other things. There are excellent supermarkets and pharmacies without the tourist crowds. And the atmosphere of a Japanese village is simply touching. A quiet, cozy place.
- Ritz QLD (8/5): A country stay to freshen up your holiday. - The property owners spoke little english however we were able to make out what they were saying and with longer sentences the host used google translate. The hosts were super friendly and we loved the traditional style. The beds were traditional shikibuton. We were recommended to hire bikes and eat at a local restaurant which we did and we enjoyed. The country offered cooler, fresher air. I would totally stay again.
- David (10/5): - This ryokan is an authentic, Japanese cultural experience. No fuss, caring hosts make you welcome beyond requirements and yet you have privacy within the old, magnificent building by the rice fields. Conveniently located 10 walk from the bus stop. 20 mins from Narita airport. Tako Town is a country town - great for walking or cycling and with magnificent temples. Excellent local restaurant. Hydrangeas line the river, which must be magnificent when in bloom I'll be back. I loved everything about this place. Good if you like a firm mattress. Simple, authentic country chalm.

- Oliver (10/5): -
- David (10/5): - Wonderful welcoming hosts, always ready to help and checking to make sure you're comfortable. The house itself is beautiful and clean and the area is a nice one to explore and there's a kind of community center nearby where you can rent a bike cheaply. There are also small tubs in the bath if you want to soak after showering. A bit cold and the sound insulation is poor but this is a usual thing for traditional houses in Japan.
- Natalie (10/5): - Lovely place, hostess so thoughtful and generous. We wish we could have stayed longer! N/a
- GeoJef (10/5): Earm amazing hospitality. Comfortable, clean, quiet. - I enjoyed the warm, amazing hospitality, from owners/staff: Mieko and Michiko.
I was looking for a supermarket and Mieko offered to give me a lift.
In the morning I enjoyed coffee, a japanese snack/sweet.
Mieko gave a beautiful gift as souvenir from Japan.
The room was big, the tatami comfortable, clean bathroom, beautiful house and very quiet for a great night of sleep.
- Matthias (10/5): Excellent experience. - The Owners are very kind and show you around the building immediately. You get a Map of Tako-town and you will be greeted very warmly.
On my third day the owner told me to come with her and she showed me Tako's beautiful temples/shrines.
She always asked if everything was okay and if I needed something i should tell her.
She has a warm smile and it was really hard for me to check out. I will definitely return. -
- SHINJI (7/5): -
- ALVIN GERARD (8/5): - It is peaceful. The neighborhood is very quiet. I got bitten by a bedbug at the back of my neck. Suffered for couple of days.
- Tim (10/5): - Perfect in every way. The hosts are so incredibly friendly, and Tako town is really lovely to explore
- Purnendu (10/5): True Japanese Hospitality - Amazing property
Amazing people
Very nice and very good people who received us with lot of love and humility .
They also came to see us off and it was very heart touching .
As a token of appreciation they also gave us a calendar for 2026 . It was a memorable stay . Everything was great .
- Emiri (8/5): -
- Jack (8/5): - The staff were available late in the evening, and they were quite nice.
- Ye (9/5): - The location is convenient and the traditional room is cozy. The hostess is warm-hearted and told me a lot travel tips around the town. Some other guests may be a little noisy.
- Shristi (10/5): - Very welcoming host
- Jennie Young (10/5): - It was beautiful, peaceful and the hosts were delightful.
- Divina (10/5): - Great experience staying in a traditional Japanese home. Far from the city but if you would like the quiet and calm atmosphere, it's a good place.
The owner had given me a warm welcome. I was given a token as I left and was able to wear the traditional dress for photo memories. I was dropped off by the beautiful grandma to the bus waiting area near their place because I had a huge luggage. The bus is every hour so you have to know the time schedule.
- Schmit (10/5): -
- Lucas (9/5): -
- Jack (10/5): Look at the section about what we liked! :) - We loved how welcoming the staff were to us, especially the hostess Mieko and Kai who helped translate for us. They were very enthusiastic for us to participate in traditional activities such as making onigiri and crafting of talismans that they gifted us; they also demonstrated kindness and thoughtfulness that let us feel less like guests and more like family. We loved how authentically traditional the ryokan was and the town of Tako itself is traveller friendly with lots of temples and natural landscapes to explore. It was an excellent end to our Japan wide trip, away from the busy and loud city life; we’ll definitely be returning and will recommend it to our friends. Even after weeks after our return home, we still think fondly of our time at the Masugataya Ryokan, thank you all for your generosity and hospitality! We wish we had more time to explore and enjoy the area.
- Torsten (8/5): Very easily reachable from Narita, if you want to avoid arriving late in Tokyo. The town itself is somewhat sleepy, but -

- Renee (10/5): As our last stop in our Japan stay, Masugataya Ryokan was beyond perfect. We are very grateful. - The hosts are very attentive, kind and helpful. Our room was beautiful and perfect for our stay. There is nothing we would change from our stay and we will be staying with them again as soon as we get the chance.
- Aldo (10/5): -
- Owen (9/5): -
- Laureen (10/5): - I only stayed one night and got a bit unlucky with the weather but because of that I was able to experience some exceptional local kindness.
The hotel is in the middle of Tako, with access to a few eateries and sightseeing spots, all within walking distance. It's a small town but well worth exploring.
You will be greeted by the owner who has prepared English brochures and maps for the area. Though they themselves do not speak much English, the forms and informations are all in English and you will definitely be able to communicate.
(because I speak Japanese fluently I was however quite fortunate to not have to resort to hands and feet for talking, so please keep this in mind for this review.)
The communal facilities are clean, lockable and easily accessible. The room was plenty spacious, though please be advised that if you bring heavy luggage and are situated on the second floor you will need to carry your luggage quite a ways, from the main building and up the stairs, this was not the case for me but for another customer who checked in after me.
I was on the ground floor, particularly enjoyed the screen sliding doors and the tatami flooring.
The futon was already laid out when I came and was quite comfortable to sleep on.
Aside from that I was overwhelmingly surprised by the owner's kindness and passion for kimono. I was fortunate enough to try on quite a few and experience something very unique. I learned a great many things about the history of the garments to their use and appeal.
Thanks to the loving couple hosting the inn I was able to enjoy my day despite the approaching typhoon and arrived at the airport safe and dry.
It's just a bit out of the way, close to the airport but not at all noisy so I recommend staying here for anyone interested in really learning about Japanese culture. The owners are very passionate about what they do and they care greatly about their town, and the customers wellbeing, you will not be disappointed.
- Anneleen (10/5): - It was wonderful, the people are so nice, and taught us a lot about Japanese culture. It was the best way to start our trip to Japan.
- Hai Tian Michael (9/5): -
- Yegang (10/5): We had a very nice time for staying here. When we check out and leave, we have received very nice gifts from the owner, - The Ryokan owner is very kind, we feel like staying in home. The room is clean and quiet. The bathroom is very comfortable .

- rodica gabriela (10/5): - Prima volta in Giappone.
- Pullyn (8/5): Very thoughtful host - The host was very kind.
- Miriam (10/5): Memorable and peaceful start to our Japan trip - Our stay was perfect! Mieko-san and her husband were incredibly kind and welcoming. Mieko-san even hosted a small workshop where we made souvenirs together and she let me try on some of her beautiful kimonos.
They were eager to share their knowledge of Japanese culture, especially unique aspects of life in Tako-machi. The ryokan itself is cozy and makes you feel at home. It was clean, comfortable, and full of character.
We would come back to this ryokan for the owners alone, but the town also has its charm - letting us experience authentic japanese everyday life on the country side. Our stay in Tako-machi and Masugataya Ryokan was truly unforgettable<3 Nothing:)
- David (10/5): Exceptional -

- Elizabeth (10/5): The highlight of my trip to Japan! - It’s a beautiful and peaceful ryokan- perfect for resting and relaxing. All the people I met in Tako were extremely kind, friendly, and charming. The host was lovely and I really enjoyed the time I spent with her as she shared her love of Japan, the culture, and the crafts. I loved my stay, would highly recommend it to others, and plan to go back again in the future! Everything was perfect!
- Darion (10/5): Excellent. Really enjoyed it - Excellent hosts - amazing traditions and interaction with the guests to ‘bring them Japan’. Very traditional Ryokan overlooking rice fields.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - Large, clean rooms, quiet location, surrounded by nature and temples. Although it’s not directly in Narita, it’s a great alternative. Much quieter and still everything you need is available. You can easily take a bus directly to Narita or the airport.
The rooms are in traditional Japanese style, and the owners are incredibly friendly. I felt right at home! Thank you so much.
- Lopez (10/5): Exceptional -
- Avner (7/5): Good -
- Maya (10/5): Perfect stay in a beautifully maintained Ryokan - Truly one of most special experiences of my life. I am so incredibly grateful to the version of me who decided to make this reservation here, and even more grateful for the wonderful warmth, kindness, and hospitality shown by the hosts. My stay here will be a cherished memory for as long as I live.
I cannot emphasize enough how perfect everything was: so clean, the futons was so comfortable, down comforters, quiet, so warm and homely.
The hosts have open hearts and imbue the space with so much love you - you can’t escape it.
The bath facilities were such a pleasure after a long day as well.
I truly look forward to coming back! Nothing applicable to me. Perfect stay.
- Vivienne (10/5): This place may look ordinary on the internet but the experience and host make it 5 star :) - We arrived very late but the host Miko made us feel welcome from the time we arrived till the time we left. She went out of her way and made our stay a warm welcome to holiday in Japan. I would highly recommend this place and its nice and close to Narita airport only 30 minutes away. A nice place to unwind after your holiday in Japan. A great place to sleep in a Ryokon and experience a traditional Japanese home. Nothing cant fault this place.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Aaron (10/5): Exceptional - the hospitality was top
Mieco and her husband are the best
my three daughters fall in love with them
- Roland (9/5): Wonderful experience - This was my second visit at the Masugataya Ryokan and just like last year, I was very pleased with the accommodations. The staff has been exceptionally friendly and everybody did their best to make my 3-week vacation as comfortable as possible. I did not have breakfast included in my booking, so the only thing I have a question about is the fact, that I ended up paying a much higher price this March for a two-week stay than last November (almost twice as much). I do intend to include this Ryokan again in my future travel plans that take me to Japan.
Thank you again for a wonderful experience.
Roland
- Norma (10/5): Exceptional -
- Caitlin (10/5): Great! - Wonderful stay, the hosts were very kind! Wasn’t far from the airport and everything is very accessible in Tako. Very good and we would stay here again!
- Kevin (9/5): Perfect stop-over for Narita airport - Peaceful location with lovely Japanese style rooms and within walking distance of shops
Great spot close to Narita - we were worried about noise from the planes but not a problem at all.
Hosts were so lovely, gentle, kind and even gave us a present! Best experience ever. Walls between rooms were a little thin
- Alex (10/5): Magical and comforting - Mieko-San was so hospitable and nurturing. Her attention to detail and incredible generosity made us feel so incredibly lucky and was the best end to our trip. Mieko immersed us in Japanese cultural practices and made an effort to communicate with us and make sure we were always comfortable, fed and happy. The gifts she gave us I will keep forever! Beautiful room with fresh tatami mats and a lovely energy. So greatful. Thank you!
- Ax (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jen (10/5): Wonderful ryokan near the airport - Wonderful traditional ryokan not too far from the airport. The room smelt amazing! The owners were lovely and very understanding when I arrived very late due to train delays. The husband also kindly took me to the airport for a reasonable price. Early morning flight!
- Huvig (8/5): Very good - Friendly No fridge
- Jo (9/5): Wonderful start to our Japanese experience - Authentic Japanese experience in a quiet little village. Hostess was so helpful. While she didn't speak English, she did have a really useful electronic translator that worked well. She had lots of suggestions/recommendations for us. We enjoyed Japanese breakfast each morning. Highly recommend .
- Chauncey (10/5): The idyllic county side life depicted and adored in drama and anime. - Arriving.
Staying.
These are the types of places that allow you to capture the feeling of living in said country without living in said country. The best part is all the time spent between arrival and departure. Leaving.
I regret not allocating more time towards my stay.
- Marie (10/5): Exceptional - I LOVED IT THERE! We selected the accomodation mainly as it was closer to the airport, but I wish we would arrive a bit earlier and explore it more. Amazing place with very traditional feeling, the hosts were wonderful and made sure we had everything. The place is very clean and comfortable, we went to have a dinner to local restaurant which was also excellent with super lovely staff. If I will be going to Japan again, it will be deffinatly on my list of places to visit again! Very recommended.
- Roland (10/5): Excellent choice of traditional Japanese "Bed & Breakfast". - I spent 2 weeks at this wonderful traditional Ryokan, not far from Narita airport. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed my short holiday at this cozy little Inn and the quaint town of Tako. Everything I needed was within walking distance, and the transportation options to Narita town and to the airport (by public bus) were super convenient. I promised the family who ran the Ryokan to return to their facility early in the coming Spring and I intend to make this my "base camp" for any future excursions to explore this beautiful Country. I highly recommend this little Inn to anyone who travels to Japan via Narita airport ; weather for business or pleasure.
Thank you again very much for their generous hospitality.

- Sergeichuk (10/5): Just to note that the place is 100+ yo. Not that I dislike it, but just keep it in mind. There won’t be brand new facili - It was amazing! Easily our best stay in Japan. Mieko san is a wonderful host (and person!)
- Mayza (10/5): Amazing experience! - This is my 2nd time staying at this Beautiful Ryokan. Must see to experience and appreciate the Japanese Culture. Mr. Yoshida and his wife are just like Family, you will be treated well. I will always stay at this Ryokan because there are not many left to enjoy and experience the ancient Japanese way of living.
- Bernard (10/5): Authentic stay, close to the airport, but in a quiet area - Very authentic place in a quiet location 30' away from Narita Airport.
Loved the 'old style Japan' feel of the place.
- Patrick (9/5): Superb -
- Wu (9/5): Superb - It’s quiet but convenient
- Jonathan (8/5): Very good - Very traditional, staff were lovely
