From the moment I arrived, it was clear that the owner genuinely care about their guests' comfort and happiness. The property itself was clean, beautifully maintained, and had all the little touches that make a place feel like home. What truly set this stay apart, though, was the hospitality. The owners went above and beyond in every way – offering local recommendations, checking in to ensure everything was perfect! It’s rare to find people so genuinely kind, positive and dedicated to making your stay memorable. I left feeling incredibly grateful and would return in a heartbeat. Highly recommended for anyone looking for not just a place to stay, but a truly exceptional experience, meeting people from all over the world and making amazing memories! I liked EVERYTHING! The hostel and the hospitality and kindness of the owners exceeded my expectations.

• Glenn (6/5): Nice common area, friendly host, but missing it in multiple areas - I liked the separate kitchen area, although it's very basic. And the friendly host. A lot of small things just makes it less pleasant as it should be. The bathroom has no shower curtain, making a wet mess. The shower head doesn't have a proper mounting point and is leaking. I slept on the most wobbly bunk bed I ever experienced, The mattresses aren't that comfortable. They advertise with extra long >2m beds, but they are just 2m. Yes it's a cheap place, but I have experienced a whole lot better for the same money.

• Ingrid (10/5): Helpful staff and everything you need from a hostel! - This hostel was perfect as a base for hiking and activities. The owners were so helpful, and went above and beyond. They allowed me to hold my bags there whilst I did some overnight hikes and shower on my return.
• Debra (9/5): Feels like home and is very comfortable. - Great location and very clean. The family that runs it are friendly and super helpful with information about activities in the area. The kitchen area is a separate little building and is very social. There are two rooms that are up two flights of stairs, the second flight has a low ceiling and is difficult to walk up and down. Rooms on the ground level or first floor won’t have an issue.

• Rosanna (8/5): Cozy, welcoming, did the job. - I liked the interior, it was very warm and felt like a log cabin. I stayed in a room by myself as there were no other guests at the time. Bathroom was clean and shower worked great. The kitchen is a great space in a separate room. Cooking facilities are good. Very minimalist place and close to the supermarket and bus stop. No lockers, however as I was the only person I was able to lock the room with my valuables in it.

• Natasha (10/5): Loved my stay at Highlander, would stay again. - Highlander felt like a home away from home. The room was small but had heating which was much appreciated. The kitchen space had a great communal area to meet other hikers and plan out trips. The owner helped us with hiking advice and transport to the start of the trails. After receiving a nasty/threatening email from the other hostel in town when my plans changed, I was so happy I ended up staying here instead 😊 Nothing, it was great.
• Kimberley (10/5): Exceptional - The owner was very kind and gave lots of information about possible activities (hikes) in the neighbourhood. He offers (paid) transport to starting points if necessary. The hostel itself is very cosy, clean and well equipped, only a 5 minute walk from the bus station and 20 minutes from the lake by foot. His mother is the sweetest, always greeting you and trying her best to communicate. I definitely recommend this hostel!

• Bouwe (5/5): Great atmostphere among guests, disappointing facilities - Atmosphere in the guest house was great, but mainly due to the guests. Location is also great, close to restaurants, hikes, and busstation. Nice hangout area. Facilities were below standard, bad cleaning, doors that didn't lock properly, nothing closed with keys. Beds were old and kinda harsh with the springs, toilet paper was missing often.

• Elise (10/5): Great hostel, would stay again - Great hostel. It was easy to chat with other hikers and get their advice on hikes to do the next day. The hostel owner organised transport for a group of us to do the trek to Bobotov Kuk. This was great as it was one of the hikes I wanted to do. He also gave me advice on bus transportation to Kotor. The hostel was in a good location being right in the center and a 40 minute walk to the black lake entrance. The heating in the room was really good after hiking all day. Nothing!

• Cornelius (8/5): Very good - Staff is very helpful and kind. The facility is cleaned daily from top to bottom so kitchen and bathrooms are always so very clean. The bunk beds are very comfortable and fitted with sheath, pillow and blankets. The kitchen didn't have some of the essentials to cook. I had to buy almost everything I needed if not some things left from other stayers. But had 2 big fridges and all the pans and pots and oven you will need.
• Markus (9/5): Good hostel with great guests and common area - I very much enjoyed my stay at Hostel Highlander. Located quite centrally in Zabljak, you could Start many hikes from the hostel in the morning. I especially liked the common area with kitchen, as most guests would sit down there in the evening, making it easy to socialise, hear from their past hikes and plan the next days with new hiking buddies. The small dorms were nice and the beds comfy.

• Ross (10/5): Great place to meet other hikers - A very social hostel which is a perfect place to stay when visiting Durmitor. The hosts are very welcoming and the place is clean and tidy. In the evenings everyone in the hostel gathers in the kitchen to share stories of the days hiking so it’s a great place for solo travellers to meet other people. One of the downstairs showers needs a shower curtain as the water can get everywhere.

• Anke (9/5): Go here if you want to meet fellow travelers - Wow, the owners of this place are so incredibly lovely! They really managed to create a great place with a very cool vibe. Every evening everyone meets in the kitchen and talks about what to do the next day. The host sometimes joins and suggests hikes you can do.

I don’t believe it’s appropriate for the cat to be in that room whilst others are cooking and cleaning for sanitary reasons. The cat is friendly but annoying. Broken shower head holder on top floor is broken, no holder on middle floor. Broken toilet seat on top floor bathroom.

• Brigid (9/5): Superb - comfortable, liked that the kitchen was separate from the main house which kept the noise down in the evening, the owner was available for most needs and extended offers to drive guests to trailheads and even their next destination. Went out of his way to help guests feel comfortable. only improvement would be to restock the bathrooms and kitchens with hygiene supplies. Soap wasn’t provided in the shared dorm bathrooms and toilet paper ran low a few times. kitchen needed more dish soap and cleaning towels / new sponges.
• Sabrina (9/5): Superb - Pretty social hostel with a nice kitchen area. Staff was friendly and explained everything. Room was small but ok. Due to the size surprisingly didn't got cold. But they also gave me an extra blanket. Not far from the center. Bathroom was big and clean. Just the bed were really noisy and instable but still slept well.
