Guest Reviews
- Alexandra (10/5): It was such a beautiful experience to be here - So clean and nice and the food was so good
- Mihiro (10/5): -
- Jennifer (9/5): Great hospitality, delicious kaiseki breakfast and dinner, facilities are adequate though could be improved - Calm serene scenery Not enough community toilets
- RACHAEL (8/5): Truly traditional Japanese Ryokan, attached to a temple, the peace was wonderful. - The breakfast is traditional Japanese, we tried everything, not really to our taste, but the host was very accomodating and provided us alternative choices. The bathroom and toilets are all shared. I prefer private. The toilet was basic and small (also a 'hole in the floor' option as well as western.

- Barbara (10/5): Great value for traditional ryokan experience. - Unique experience in a traditional ryokan. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Onsen was reservable for time slot for room. Staff were so helpful. We paid extra for sake tasting and amazing matcha parfaits. Onsen was too hot to sit in for long and we visited in March and common areas like halls were very cold but room was warm and cozy.
- Abigail (10/5): Incredible food. Peaceful stay. - THE FOOD!! Oh my goodness. Stay here for the food! An absolutely incredible feast which allowed me to try lots of local food and also eat vegetables which was much appreciated at that point of my Japan trip only eating meat and carbs!
The staff were all so sweet and kind.
Also you can order drinks including alcohol and they'll bring it to you in the dining room or in your own room which was appreciated.
Really peaceful beautiful location. Easy by train from Hakata.
Highly recommend. It was a bit tricky to get around by foot but it wasn't a problem.
- Charles (9/5): - Staff, onsen, and food were all excellent. The area is quite beautiful and the next door temple is very interesting. Our room was the only room without a lock.
- dongxiao (10/5): one of the best - unique experience, excellent food and sake, friendly host, quiet place
- Natalia (10/5): -

- Belma (9/5): Ryokan with wonderful meals. - Wonderful and helpful staff, exquisite meals (truly exceptional food and presentation), traditional ryokan experience that didn’t feel touristy. We booked the most expensive room (the largest one) however when we arrived a partition was put in to make it smaller for the two of us. It helped to keep the room warm but it lacked the facilities of the cheaper rooms (sink and raised seating area). Additionally the door was see through and the light is kept on in the hallway all night. It felt we paid more for less.

- Jan (10/5): - I loved my stay here. The owners were lovely, the food was delicious, the room was beautiful and nature was close by. Would definitely go again.
- Kai (10/5): Beautiful location, amazing food and private bath makes this place a hidden gem to stay at in Fukuoka. - Location is great, a short walk from the station. The food was incredible, and I didn’t expect the bath to be private (you write your name on a timetable to reserve it for 30 mins). Perfect for people who want to have a soak in a large hot bath, but are uncomfortable bathing with strangers.
Also 1 train stop away from the Nanzoin temple, a pleasant morning walk. The frequent passing train was a little loud, the toilets were a little dated.
- Grace (10/5): - Staff was really kind and sweet. The dinner and breakfast were prepared with extra care and attention to details. Room was spacious for a solo traveler, clean, and the futon was comfortable. No issue with the shared bath. Location was very quiet and peaceful. It really felt like a gateway from all the city life and noise. Though you do hear the passing trains in the distance, but it didn't run at nighttime so it was no problem. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend to anyone looking for something different.
- arlene (10/5): Great experience in a Japanese Ryokan with a super friendly staff - I was with friends and we wanted an authentic experience in a Ryokan and Temple. We were really pleased with our stay. We love the friendliness of the staff, who always accomodated our request with a friendly smile. They even brought us by the shuttle to Nanzoin temple for such a cheap price. The Kaiseki dinner was superb with organic vegetables and fresh seafood! Our room was huge even if we were 4 people in the room. I would highly recommend this place for couples or groups, who want a peaceful and relaxing experience away from everyday life. Coffee was not included in the breakfast set and we had to pay extra. This is only a small suggestion since more foreigners like coffee.
- Karen (9/5): Superb -
- Beverly (8/5): Great experience staying near one of Sasaguri’s temples - Fabulous meals and friendly owners. I also liked my room, it’s simple but comfortable. I was able to experience traditional Japanese stay at a peaceful serene place. The toilet.. there are only two western type (but it’s old style) and during my stay, the one near my room is always in use. But i knew from the get go that bath and toilets are shared so it all depends on one’s comfort level.
- Richter (10/5): Exceptional -
- Halina (8/5): Great place! - The food, the service were excellent! For some reason I thought it had an onsen, but the conditions of the showers for washing before entering a small bath place were quite questionable. We didn't know we could walk up the mountain to se the huge blue Buddha but we run out of time staying for 1 night only. Next time we would know better what to expect.
- Elaine (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely wonderful. The traditional facilities were all that I had hoped for. The food was delicious and exquisitely presented. The owners were so kind and accommodating with my poor Japanese. Temple prayers and a meditative divinity tracing experience made my whole stay perfect.
- Minsang (9/5): Amazing place with great people. You have to try the food there, it doesn’t disappoint. Would love to go again and visit - Amazing staff, warm and friendly.
Food alone is worth the stay. Local dishes with exceptional detail and taste.
Quiet and comfortable.
Clean facilities. Can get a little cold inside during the winters
- Karen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mo (10/5): Traditional Ryokan inside a Temple. Absolutely charming! - We loved everything! The food was traditional Kaiseki dinner. Fresh fruit, vegetables and filling. We loved the traditional old wooden building architect and wooden smell. Being able to wake up and explore the temple ground was one of a kind experience. Easy to get to by foot and a small carry on.
- Roxana (10/5): Very good food, on temple area and kind owners. A hidden gem! - Very good food! Great surrounding on a Temple ground. Nice owners who showed us arround. Nice onsen. You can start the pelgrimsroute (by foot or car) here. Ask for the stemp and calligraphy mark when you leave. A hidden gem and very affordable for the area and the quality of the food. A opportunity to get a closer look at Japanese culture. Please go you won’t be disappointed.
- Jo (10/5): Peaceful getaway - This gorgeous ryokan is perfect for your next getaway trip. My husband and I stumbled across this hidden gem, and it certainly did not disappoint. The beautiful family that runs the ryokan were ever so kind, tending to our every need. We were served beautifully made meals for both breakfast and dinner (locally sourced and made with seasonal produce). We immersed ourselves in the wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. We couldn't have been any happier with our stay.
Please note: the family does not speak a lot of English. However, they use a translation card to help both parties understand each other.
Also, if you have any significant food allergies (especially to seasonal ingredients), please let them know in advance! If you do forget, they will ask about allergies when you first arrive. N/A
- Zi (8/5): Very good - The staff is very considerate, and breakfast is delicious. The whole environment make me feel peace.
- James (7/5): Unique but I would probably not stay here again but I am glad I stayed one night. Staff was great! - It was unique but not comfortable. Bathrooms were on another floor and you had to use them at certain times. Toilets were down the hall. It was a different experience and I would do it again just for the uniqueness. Probably would not stay more than one night. The location wasn’t great either. It was unique but not comfortable. Bathrooms were on another floor and you had to use them at certain times. Toilets were down the hall. It was a different experience and I would do it again just for the uniqueness. Probably would not stay more than one night. The location wasn’t great either.
- Marie (9/5): Superb - Wonderful host who went above and beyond to make our stay memorable, including guiding us to the best spot to see fire flies, which was magical.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mehdi (10/5): Exceptional - The host is really kind, I recommend
- Michal (10/5): Exceptional - Ryokan located in an exceptionally charming place. While there, you could feel the true atmosphere of Japan. Great and friendly hosts. The onsen is small but completely sufficient. Delicious breakfast!. nd
- Masaru (8/5): A peaceful Showa-Era ryokan tucked away on a mountainside in Sasaguri - Our reservation at Dainichiya Ryokan included dinner and breakfast for two, making our stay a superb value.
The all-female staff was very welcoming and sweet. One member of the staff was quite apologetic to us, regarding Dainichiya's old fashioned Showa-era building and accommodations. I told her that for us, that was the whole point and charm of Dainichiya!
The dinner was very generous and filling. Breakfast the next morning was more of the same. Delicious and healthy, with many servings of vegetables. Although the bathroom facilities were shared, we had no problems or long waits to use the large bath.
Dainichiya Ryokan is located adjacent to Akashi-ji temple in the small town of Sasaguri and is also conveniently close to Nanzo-in, a much larger temple known for its huge bronze statue of a reclining Buddha. Akashi-ji Temple and Nanzo-in are both associated with the Sasaguri 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
We enjoyed exploring the grounds outside of the modest, yet beautiful Akashi-ji temple in the morning. After I had a nice conversation with the gardener, I got into the rental car with my wife for the short 0:30 drive to Fukuoka Airport, feeling very happy and rested with our short but pleasant one-night stay at Dainichiya Ryokan. Dainichiya Ryokan embodies all of the qualities of a typical old-fashioned Japanese Showa-Era ryokan. It's great to be able to stay in places like Dainichiya, which have survived the test of time and are still welcoming guests today.
- Jakub (10/5): Exceptional - This ryokan is truly exceptional. We stayed for four days and visited various places around: the city of porcelain Arita, Fukuoka, Nanzoin (the largest bronze statue of Buddha), ... The connection is perfect, just 20 minutes by JR train from Fukuoka Hakata station.
The scenery around is nice: hills, big dam, temple, and a well-kept garden. The staff is friendly and creates a welcoming atmosphere. Breakfast and dinner were traditional and very well served in handmade porcelain bowls. We were in Japan for three weeks in various hotels. This accommodation and food was the best we had. Great experience.
- Sebastian (10/5): Great way to experience Japanese culture and fabulous stay. - This is a special magical place on the country side, it is also a Buddhist temple ran by a family. The host Yuki Hito is also a Buddhist monk. They are such wonderful people the staff and you can feel the true Japanese authentic culture and lifestyle. The food was amazing and it is a great place to doze off into nature and reflect. Honestly I had an excellent experience.
- Berengere (10/5): Exceptional - Family spirit. Very welcoming.food was amazing
- Sally (10/5): Wonderful - First time staying at a ryokan and we were not disappointed! Very beautiful environment with the shrine next to it and the staff was very helpful. Also close to the train station. Absolutely 10/10 experience
- Leaichi (10/5): Unique location and warm staff! - Very unique location in a temple, and very helpful staff. They very nivela propose to drive me to the nearest subway station in the morning.
- Steffen (10/5): Cozy traditional ryokan, great value! - A beautiful traditional ryokan which is part of a temple. Super friendly staff and amazing breakfast. The bathroom facilities are old but everything is very clean. A traditional tatami room with comfortable futons is prepared for you while you are at dinner.
- Jules (10/5): What a wonderful ryokan to use as a home base while exploring Sasaguri! - We liked everything about this wonderful traditional ryokan.
Located just twenty minutes by train east of Fukuoka, it is nestled in a valley surrounded by forested mountains with cool clean air and nature.
It is kept in perfect condition by its friendly and welcoming proprietors.
Her food is amazing. You should take her dinners too because they are beautifully crafted from seasonal ingredients mostly grown in her garden.
The bath is super clean and wonderful at the end of a hiking day.
This is a true find, with gourmet meals, all at a bargain price. Highly recommended Nothing not to like.
