Guest Reviews
- Andre (10/5): - Nice traditional hotel with outward onsen, very old lady that served the restaurant
- Alysha (10/5): - This stay was a highlight of our Japan trip. The lady who runs the Ryokan is very sweet and welcoming, despite us not speaking any Japanese. The ryokan itself is very sweet and clean, and the rooms are large and comfortable. The best part was the beautiful indoor and outdoor onsen open 24 hours. The Japanese breakfast was also exceptional. I would recommend this to anyone wanting an authentic Ryokan experience in Japan, and will be returning! Nothing, our stay was excellent.
- Sirisha (10/5): Amazing in the middle of mountains - Amazing food and the outdoor pool was lovely.. the water from the springs are in a temperature perfect for us and the overall setting in the middle of forest is surreal.. the food was amazing I tasted the best strawberry sorbet ever! So glad I booked this! Nothing much.
- Simon (10/5): - Mrs kinoshita is a lovely old lady that runs the place single handed. Her cooking was the best of our time in Japan. Ask for the room with toilet and sink. It was massive.
The outdoor onsen was always free and private.
Bus stop is a few minutes walk away. Perfect location for exploring caves, waterfalls and the cable car. That we couldn't stay longer.
- Hwee Kien (10/5): One of our favourites - Delicious local breakfast.
Friendly staff.
Quiet environment.
Easy parking.
Onsen was interesting: functions as shower room. Nothing.

- Pip (9/5): Lovely place to stay if you're visiting Kamikochi. - Run by a very nice old lady. Amazing food, peaceful. Bus stop is nearby. Note: cash only, no ATMs at all in this area.
- Wilawan (9/5): - A traditional style Japenese Ryokan running by old couple which is very kind and hospitality. It is clean and comfortable. The food is also very delicious. The place and facility is a little old.
- HUA XIE (8/5): -

- Fay (10/5): A lovely stay at a traditional Japanese guesthouse with relaxing onsens and delicious breakfast. - The host was very kind, the facilities were very clean and the breakfast was delicious!

- Roy (10/5): - Charming inn with indoor and outdoor bath. Great breakfast and spacious rooms.
- Vianna (10/5): Will definitely stay again. Thank you very much! - Everything Nothing
- Vianna (10/5): Such great value. Comparable to ryokans I’ve stayed at 4 times the price. Will definitely stay again. Thank you very muc - Everything was excellent! Food was fantastic. Host was the best. 2 min walk from bus stop. The water in the outdoor onsen was boiling hot
- Jia (10/5): Rare hidden gem with old world charm and handcrafted goodness - Rare hidden gem with old world charm and everything home made goodness. Ran by a hard-working old couple, they are beyond kind(offered to drive us to the ropeway) and were skillful at their craft and the homemade meals were delicious. The experience felt very authentic, memorable, and wholesome. The place was cleaner and quieter than I expected. The indoor onsen felt very private. We had an unforgettable stay. It felt like what we were living in a perfectly preserved time capsule of older Japan. A bit remote and inconvenient to reach without a car(buses infrequent).
- Sarah (6/5): Not bad but I wish it’s like ryokan that I imagine - Dinner No tea inside the room , onsen are not warm enough bathing soap and shampoo only for one person at a time
- Sam (10/5): What a wonderful little hotel. The couple that run it work so hard making their nest little place such a lovely stay. Th -
- Bhushan (10/5): Perfect for relaxing, exploring nature and hiking in surrounding mountains. - The property is perfect for relaxing, located in beautiful natural surroundings. Breakfast and dinners are superb, every day offering something new and exciting. Onsens are great! Nothing specific to complain. Please be aware that the location is somewhat remote and buses are not very frequent, but that's expected at such a location, close to untouched natural beauty.

- Kevin (10/5): A perfect place to unwind and feel interconnected with Kamikochi - This is a great ryokan run by a couple! The food was the definite highlight of our trip with all our meals being absolutely amazing! Being out in Kamikochi, you'll feel much closer to nature than any location in Tokyo. The baths were very nice and the hosts were very accommodating as we needed to stay a few hours after check out in the shared area which was allowed without hesitation. Everything met our expectations! For those who may be pickier, all the facilities are in a shared area. Some rooms have personal bathrooms but if you don't choose such a room, it can get crowded in the mornings. Due to everything being in a shared area, your experiences may be driven by other guests in the area. We had a very large and rowdy group with us the first night and the change in atmosphere was evident after they left on the second night and were replaced by a more respectful group.
- Min Xin (Charlotte) (8/5): traditional Japanese ryokan experience - Please note this is a cash-only hotel. The property is old, but charming in its own traditional way. The onsen water is very hot yet relaxing, and the open-air bath is mixed gender. The food is delicious, the owners are kind and helpful, though English communication is limited. At night, you can enjoy a beautiful starry sky. only cold shower
- Andreas (10/5): -

- Limor (10/5): - The Onsen and the food were incredible
- Mo Yin Frances (8/5):

- Gunn (10/5): Wonderful stay in a traditional Japanese guesthouse. Amazing food, beautiful gardens and onsen, a highlight of our trip. -
- Steffan (9/5): Superb - Very chill place to stay, the food was amazing and the onsens were very nice, especially the outdoor one in the night!
- Kirsten (10/5): Beautiful home stay in the forest. Best dinner we had in Japan! - Stunning mountain area. The onsen was incredible! You are really surrounded by forest. The meals we had were the best food we ate in the country. Real home cooking perfection. The onsen was a delight even in summer. Loved everything:) The bedding could have been a bit nicer but it was all good!
- Nierop (10/5): Exceptional and touching experience - One of our favourite stays in Japan - we extended an extra night. Mrs Kinoshita takes great care of her guests and is a remarkable cook. A lot of love and energy goes into the meals she prepares. Onsen (indoor and outdoor) was one of the most relaxing during our time in Japan. The pension is cosy and feels like home. Beds were extremely comfortable, we slept very well. A must if you’re seeking something of an authentic experience. We couldn’t really fault anything.
- Santanu (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shira (10/5): Exceptional - Incredibly quiet, we slept very well. The food was wonderful and mama was wonderful
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rolf (9/5): Amazing food and wonderful silence - The food was AWESOME! We had a lot of Kaiseki dinners on our trip through Japan but this was one of the best. It is plentiful and the Hida beef is splendid. Our landlady even served a homemade ice sorbet for desert. Breakfast was also really delicious. One shouldn't miss this opportunity!
There's an onsen which is filled 24/7 directly from the source so it's always hot. There's one on the outside and another one on the inside.
We got there when spring was yet to come, so there wasn't a lot in bloom yet - but we assume that the gardens and the surroundings must be splendid throughout the year. Also it's really close to the Kamikōchi valley which is a definite bonus.
And the silence.... Magnificent!
All in all we enjoyed this stay a lot. This is not so much about not liking it but about preference: there's no possibility to shower inside. The onsen is the place to go in order to freshen up. Also there's a shared space for brushing teeth and getting ready in the eve and morning.
We assumed the house is a little older, so there's no ensuite bathrooms.
My guess is that this is not for everybody. If we had stayed longer maybe we would have wished to have more privacy. For one night it was alright. So it wasn't like a negative to us.
- Jan (10/5): Our favorite stay - This was our number one favorite stay in Japan! It is a very traditional guesthouse with a lot of charm, run by a sweet older couple. It is a small operation in a very small town: compared to modern hotels, many things such as dinner and breakfast schedules are more rigid. Please consider this when booking!
The old lady who runs the customer-facing part of the guesthouse is very welcoming and accommodating, but also straightforward, which was fantastic from our Finnish perspective. She can use a translation app, gestures and a couple of English words for communication with foreign guests. We could speak some Japanese which made things a lot smoother. I would recommend learning some key phrases in Japanese for this stay!
Some reviews criticize the cleanliness of the place, but let's be real here: the establishment is an older wooden house with sliding doors in close proximity to nature. Obviously you can find some cobwebs in the rafters if you look for them. The place is kept in very clean condition where it matters, and that includes guest rooms and dining areas.
The set dinner and breakfast were the best food we ate during our trip. Simply fantastic.
The hot spring baths were great, but also very hot 😄 Which shouldn't come as a surprise. The public, non-reserved baths are located indoors in a detached bathhouse building. There are separate indoor baths for men and women. The private outdoor bath must be reserved beforehand, after check-in. During our stay there were few other guests, so we were often free to use the private bath at will.
If you want to travel here by bus, be ready to study the Nouhi bus timetables carefully. Some buses stop very close to the guesthouse, while some stop a 15min uphill walk away. Pulling a lot of luggage up a mountainside would not be a good time! We used the Yamato Takkyuubin luggage courier service both when arriving and when leaving.
Payment is expected in cash.
- Lesław (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent dinner and breakfast prepared by the host (a must-have) (book the dinner in advance).. On site natural Onsen - a must have, especially after dark.. None
- Luke (8/5): Amazing stay at a traditional onsen. - Amazing stay at a traditional ryokan. The food and outdoor onsen were fantastic and the lovely couple who own the place were a joy to watch and complimented the whole experience. None.
- Amy (8/5): Very good - Exceptional food, and lovely onsens and gardens. The room was very comfortable with a pretty outlook. When our arrival was delayed into a rainy night, the owners picked us up from the bus stop, which was very kind. A small detail, but a kettle in the room, or way to get hot water and cups, would be fabulous.
- Emily (9/5): Incredible onsens, delicious dishes and relaxing nights sleeps. - The onsens were incredible and every breakfast I looked forward to. I thought that I t was a really homely stay. It gave a sense of a family retreat and the bed was really comfortable. The onsens were next level and the indoor one, with the shower, was very hot but you could easily get used to it. I thought it could do with a dust, the picture frames were covered and the wooden beams too. Also, there was a bit on limescale in the toilet, which wasn’t very inviting. Overall it was a brilliant stay.
- Jules (10/5): Exceptional - Fabulous dinner included hida beef. Onsen in and out fed by a natural hot spring. Outside especially tranquil. Good size bedroom and comfortable bed.
- Adrian (9/5): Superb - The house is amazing, with a really relaxing mood.
The location is stunning, in the middle of nature.
The home made food was probably one of the best we had in Japan.
The onsen is beautiful. Nothing. Everything was perfect
- Sivan (3/5): not value for money at all- over priced for what you get - Facility is old, the room was quite old, didn't smell fresh at all. We came just for one night and left very early in the morning. The cost for this room (shower was outside the facility) is too overpriced
- Ghorai (8/5): It was a good stay for the price we paid. - We loved the breakfast and dinner, it was cooked by the grandmother, it was extremely delicious. It was a great way to experience traditional Japanese home cooked food. We wished if there were a Kettle or other way to get hot water in the room for morning coffee or tea.
- Manu (9/5): Wonderful stay in a wonderful location - We had booked one room shared with our teenage nephew. We were the only guests, and the owners offered him a second private room for free so we each had some privacy! I've never stayed anywhere so generous!
The meals we were served were delicious, and the onsen were wonderful, particularly the outdoor open-air bath. Nothing, this place met and exceeded our expectation! The price was a little on the high side, but the hospitality we received really justified the cost.
- Gwynneth (8/5): It is an authentic inn with history that we enjoyed very much! - This is an authentic Japanese inn with a fabulous dinner and breakfast. The outdoor onsen and surrounding area is peaceful. Communication a little tough for English speaking tourists but we managed with translation apps and we felt welcomed! The dining room was quite cold but maybe that was because it was the end of November and the heater just didn't reach in there. As we were arriving by bus, we found the location not too convenient but on the other hand, that's what made it a peaceful place to visit.
- Daniel (9/5): Lovely old pension! - The owners are the sweetest old couple that try their very best in making your stay pleasant and making the best food ever! Onsen outside and inside are beautiful. It's a special place and has a bit of an old and semi-faded luxurious feeling, in the best way possible. We loved it here and hope the owners will be able to keep it up for a long time. Can't think of anything.
- Daniela (6/5): Pleasant - A very traditional place with an onsen and a good breakfast.
There is also the possibility to pre-order dinner at the venue. No shower available - the only option to clean is in the onsen.
The property is old and a bit unkempt, with a smell of mold/musk inside.
No shop/restaurants near the property. Buses operate very rarely.
- Lim (9/5): Great food, great host - Food was amazing and the host provided an extra room for us as there was availability at the lodge. 24h shared shower facilities at the onsen. Facilities abit old (communal massage chair had some power issue), but in some way it did enhance the charm of the place.
- Andrea (8/5): Very good -
- Joseph (7/5): Different - The couple that ran the place were I think past it. It was a real effort to communicate with them. Overall it wasn't a bad experience. The hot bath was very good and relaxing Communication was hard and the breakfast so so.
- Richard (10/5): Superb food and onsen. Loved it - Dinner and breakfast are stupendously good! Amazing!!
The outdoor onsen is also wonderful. If The Shining had been reshot in 1970s Japan, this is where they might have filmed it. But hey, it’s still a 10 for the food and onsen.
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional - This is such a hidden gem. This was by far one of my favorite stays in all of japan. Be sure to get the meal package. There are no restaurants in the area and the buses are infrequent. The meals was another highlight of our Japan trip. Prepared by the proprietress, both dinner and breakfast were amazing! There are 3 onsens, one outdoor that is mixed gendered, one indoor, single gendered and a foot bath. The beds are very comfortable and homey. It definitely felt like staying at grandmas house. Be sure to look at the bus schedules the night before to plan your trip, the bus comes once an hour in either direction.
- Kirk (10/5): Execptional - Great location if your wanting to hike in the alps, or Kamikochi area
Mrs Kinoshita can cook, great food.
Fantastic Onsen
Host doesnt speak english but there was no issue with communication .
- Kraisate (10/5): Exceptional - It’s the hidden gem. The onsen there is so beautiful with homemade breakfast. I really recommend this place.
- Manuel (10/5): Relaxing onsen guesthouse with traditional feeling - Mitsue Kinoshita is an elderly lady and manages everything! She uses a tablet to translate everything in your native language. Everything was uncomplicated and gave off the feeling of staying at your japanese grandma in her traditional japanese house with her beautifukly maintaines garden amd ourdoor earea.
The dinner (in yukata) was an amazing variation with hida beef as the main star. You grill it yourself on a little charcoal grill.
Finally, the onsen. Absolutely amazing! Indoor and outdoor, open 24h (because it is a hot spring^^). She even has a onsen foot bath on the terrace. Of note, the toilets are shared and the bathroom are the indoor and ourdoor onsen. No WiFi, but this is also ok sometimes. Kind of enhances the atmosphere.
- Deanna (8/5): Unforgettable authentic cultural experience. - A very traditional pension deep in the Forrest, at the base of Kamikochi National Park. Our stay was an incredible cultural experience, as the pension is run by an elderly Japanese couple who do not speak English. The “half board” includes both breakfast and dinner each day, which were traditional Japanese meals and differed somewhat each day. There are traditional onsens (indoor & outdoor) that you can freely access (this is your only form of shower/ cleaning). Great location and very easy to access the National park. You will definitely need to hire a car to arrive/ leave here and enjoy day outings. The property itself was a little unkept and there was a smell of mould/ musk inside the property. The rooms were very spacious, though we kept the windows open and had the fan blowing through the room for our stay to increase air flow (this was very manageable). It was challenging to only use onsen for cleaning, as there is no shower available. The food is strictly traditional food, which can be challenging for those unaccustomed to eating Japanese food daily.
- Gaelle (8/5): Very good -
- Benoît (8/5): An incredible Ryokan to discover. - The quality of the diner (5/5 - hight gastronomic), the Onsen, the quality of the hospitality by the two old elder , the environment of this Ryokan. The heat in the small room (summer time)
- Taylor (10/5): Wonderful place to stay, I recommend paying extra for the food. CASH ONLY. - The food was delicious, the hosts are very sweet. Room was big, beds were comfortable. CASH ONLY. This was completely our own fault, but it was cash only and we fell 700 yen short of the bill. It didn't say "cash only" anywhere on booking.com, so I am warning you now. The owner drove me to the nearest town to get money from an ATM (which was very kind) but it was the weekend and the only foreign friendly ATM was at the post office, which was closed. We ended up paying partially in US dollars. We felt so badly, and were very embarrassed, but the hosts were so sweet about the whole thing.
- Ida (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing couple who runs the place. They don’t speak english, but we had no problems getting by with body language and an online translator. Both indoor and outdoor onsen and right by the bus station! Easy to purchase dinner if it’s not included in your booking.
- Elsa (10/5): Exceptional - We had a great stay in this little ryokan run by a friendly old lady who goes out of her way to make travellers feel welcome. It's an old house with an outdoor hot spring (we had the place to ourselves!). In the evening you can have dinner in the house (various options). The breakfast was excellent. I highly recommend staying here if you are looking for an authentic experience in the area. You might need a car if you want to reach the ryokan easily.
- Kan (10/5): Pleasant - The owners are superb. We can feel their devotes and well-welcomed minds. Language is not a problem. The place is very nice and cozy. Both dinner and breakfast are very good. Be reminded that only cash is accepted.
- Luke (10/5): Exceptional - An absolute gem hidden a bus way from Hirayu Onsen. There is an outdoor onsen and two private onsens on-site. The owners put on a delicious breakfast and were kind enough to cater for my vegetarian diet. We even got a room upgrade. Thank you for your hospitality.
Bus stop is a 4 minute walk away. A second bus stop is a 20 minute walk down the hill. A small village with a shop and a couple of restaurants are 30 minute walk. Just be aware that you need a bus to get to Hirayu Onsen.
- Dimitrios (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nakash (10/5): Exceptional - Traditional pension with private onsan and wonderful dinner.
Near Kamikochi
- Samascha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tanja (9/5): Hot spring onsen and amazing food - Loved the indoor and outdoor onsen. Book half board because the food is amazing. Different each day and served with care. We have struggled to get anything like it for the price elsewhere. (Also nothing nearby if using bus transport). Owners were very attentive and offered a lift down the mountain on the last day. Our fault but it is best part of an hour away by bus from Takayama. That said, we stayed 3 nights and the bus discount ticket was very useful.
- Muhammad (8/5): Very good -
- Roman (10/5): Exceptional - Great Hot springs, great food, great service, clan, great views and location It was a little expensive
- Rian (10/5): Exceptional - The breakfast was delicioys, and the indoor onsen was amazing. The outdoor onsen needs better maintainance from the falling leaves.
- Susan (10/5): Exceptional -
