Guest Reviews
- Jack (10/5): -
- Milena (9/5): - Very clean. The beds were very comfortable. Shepard just across the road. There could be a little more pans and pots in the kitchen.
- Pauline (10/5): Un séjour merveilleux - Cottage merveilleux. Calme, dépaysant. Super hôtes ! Rien
- Sonja (9/5): Incredible peace, beautiful location, lovely owners - I contacted the owners via Social media. They responded quickly, communication was great and they offered me a discount plus, upon discussing circumstances, some extras.
The price felt reasonable at discounted level.
The cottage itself was easy to find, it's only a few miles outside of Dumfries but once you get there, it feels very remote.
The approach road is a bit bumpy but this is the countryside charm. It is also very quiet and is only a few minutes' drive from the bigger Dumfries roads.
You are surrounded by sheep, fields and open views. The location is simply stunning and if you want peace - you will find at an exceptional level here. The quietness, green views, no car noise, no light polution, just fresh air smells will provide your soul with much needed peace if you come from a busier neighbourhood.
The internal space has been modernised to a decent level, it was quite clean and had no lingering smells (I am incredibly sensitive to smells and this property had an exceptional lack of them.).
The accommodation consists of three large bedrooms, cosy lounge, modern kitchen, shower room and small conservatory. The garden is a fabulous size, mostly laid to lawn on two levels, and fully enclosed so safe and secure for children and smaller dogs (the fence is about 150cm so jumpers may be able to escape).
We all (three humans and two dogs) thoroughly enjoyed the garden. We were incredibly lucky with the weather so managed to spend a good few hours outside.
There is plenty of parking for several cars on the gravel drive on the side of the cottage.
The beds were surprisingly comfy, bedding and towels very clean and fresh. The kitchen was quite modern, featured a ceramic hob, small fridge with freezer, kettle and other bits you may need. We didn't cook. The cottage water is from their own source, it has a distinct taste and smell and there are warnings regarding Legionella in the owner provided booklets.

- Lina Karoo (10/5): Great place, we are very pleased, I recommend! - Great place. Large rooms, well-equipped kitchen. Very clean, cozy. Wonderful, quiet area
- Chris (9/5): We enjoyed our few days at this cottage. Nice quiet location and a lovely cosy place to stay. -
- Louise (9/5): Great weekend stay - Beautiful cottage in a great location, it had everything we needed for a weekend stay and we really appreciated the welcome pack after a long drive.
- Jennifer (10/5): Lovely stay in a gorgeous cottage - Everything!
The views were stunning, the cottage charming, the weather was rubbish but that’s Scotland .
The cottage was well equipped and the box of toys and selection of books was much appreciated by our toddler.
We took a walk up the road towards the farm and there was loads to see without going too close to the farmyard. We met old Bob the retired sheep dog who came toddling down for a pat. Andrew offered our wee boy a shot of the quad bike but turns out our boy just likes to admire from afar.
Overall it’s perfect for a family get away with bonus points if you have a farm daft child Nothing at all
- Carolyn (10/5): - Great accommodation couldn't fault any of it was excellent
- Mantas (10/5): -
- Julie (10/5): Lovely few days in a very comfortable cottage. - Very cosy & comfortable in a beautiful location for visiting nearby beaches and towns. Nothing.
- Guayarmina (10/5): Excellent stay and beautiful place - Clean, comfortable, and peaceful place, which is what we needed. Spacious and very well looked after
- O'connell (9/5): - Great cottage, everything you need. Comfortable clean and specious Nothing
- Kelly (10/5): Perfect, would 100% stay again - The property was extremely comfortable, spotlessly clean and in a perfect location for what we needed.
- Nazia (9/5): -
- Iain (10/5): - The location was fantastic, 15 mins from Dumfries and 15mins to castle Douglas. Quiet, relaxing and very clean. Loved the back garden as did the dog. The kids loved the fact that they could play safely in the garden and that we had wildlife visit it most evenings (toads, got to love them!).
Would definitely recommend staying here if you wish to explore Dumfries and Galloway.
We hope to be back soon to explore more. There was nothing to dislike.
- Rhea (10/5): - Lovely cottage, lots of space and big garden to enjoy the sunshine. Really enjoyed our stay here, thank you!
- Claire (10/5): Spacious, spotlessly clean cottage with beautiful views. - We were in the area visiting family, and we were looking for a property that could fit us all in. This fitted the bill perfectly. We loved the quiet location and the beautiful views. The cottage had lots of space and was spotlessly clean. It is also suitable if you have a dog. We will be back...... There was nothing we did not like about this property.
- Kevin (10/5): A wonderful weekend - we'll be back! - In a superb location, the advance communication was perfect, we had two phone numbers in case of problems (of which there were none). The property is very well laid out, spotlessly clean, with a small conservatory and a huge enclosed garden, which our dog loved. The beds and sofas were very comfortable, and the kitchen was well-equipped. We were visiting for a family wedding, but immediately decided we would come back for a week's holiday!
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maggie (10/5): Home from home - A gorgeous few days with 3 generations of family. Such a beautiful spot - every window has another stunning view. The cottage was clean, spacious and really comfortable. The garden offered a safe space for the children to play and they pottered in and out while we cooked in the well equipped kitchen.
We were so well looked after and such a friendly welcome with treats and milk on arrival. We'd definitely rebook and highly recommend. Maggie Forest was a great day out locally as was Ernespie Farm plus a lovely meal at the Laurie Arms. The only mild niggle was the position of the fridge - it was low down and in an awkward positiin but did the job of keeping our things cool. That's really nitpicking though!
- Emma (7/5): Good -
- Cédric (10/5): A wonderful place to stay and discover the area. - Everything was just perfect. Lots of space, very comfy, and a wonderful scenery. Nothing
- David (10/5): Exceptional -

- Karl (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely cottage set in a peaceful location. Central for visiting the surrounding areas. Great hosts who couldn't have been more helpful. Look forward to staying here again.
- Terry (9/5): great rural retreat - location was great, very quiet rural setting
- Gillian (10/5): Beautiful cottage in a lovely location - peaceful setting with amazing views, large garden which caught the sun all day long. Choice of outdoor seating plus a conservatory. Catching up with a friend so only 2 of us but well equipped for 6 people. Spacious well equipped cottage beautifully decorated, the beds were really comfortable. The cottage is in a great area, it's easy to drive to the coast, Rockcliffe is less than half an hour away. Lots of off road parking, dog friendly (mine had a great time).
Lovely friendly host who had provided milk, tea and coffee. The lounge was comfy and relaxing to sit in. I would definitely recommend and hope to stay again, very easy to get to from either Stranraer or Dumfries. Nothing, everything was great.
- Alan (10/5): Beautiful setting so quite and peaceful, very friendly and caring hosts. would certainly recommend -
- Benyon (10/5): The best cottage for a family weekend away! - Everything about our stay at Barnbackle cottage was fantastic! And perfect for a family stay. The cottage itself is really clean and comfortable and equipped with everything we needed for the weekend (or longer, which it will be next time!), and the views all around are stunning!
Janice, the owner, and her whole family were so friendly and welcoming and they went totally "above and beyond" on several occasions over the weekend to make sure we all had a great time! She give our grandsons a tour of the farm, which they loved, and even gave us a lift when we struggled to get a taxi! (Note - booking taxis in advance is definitely the way to go! They can be a bit pricey too, because the cottage is a ways outside of Dumfries).
I can't rate this whole weekend highly enough! We'll definitely be coming back!! 😃
- Deana (10/5): Enjoyable stay! - Fab property. Very clean and was nice to have tea, coffee and milk on arrival also chocolate bars for the kids :)
Good location to explore as everything is a short drive away.
- Geert (10/5): Excellent holiday cottage - Good information about the cottage and location.
Spacious accommodation.
Very well equipped - anything you could need is present.
Nicely decorated and furnished.
Fabulous views.
All of the above allowed us to have a very comfortable stay. Nothing at all.
- Jane (10/5): Perfect - Absolutely everything , beautiful beyond words, can’t wait to return , already re booked , stunning location beautiful cottage and so tranquil, perfect views from everyone window , Janice the owner was so lovely and helpful, cannot recommend this place enough
- James (10/5): Barnbackle Cottage, a gem of a place. - Barnbackle Cottage was lovely. A cosy, clean and comfortable place for us to stay. Not too far from shops either in Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas or Dumfries.
Beds were very comfy and rooms were very spacious. Kitchen was a good size with all the amenities you would need - cooker, hob, microwave, washer and dishwasher. The living room was a good size, plenty of comfortable seating. The bathroom was a good size too, with a good shower with good water pressure. Really can't fault the place. The rear garden was both secure for dogs and spacious. The front if the property had adequate parking for our three cars - possibly a couple more too! Janice and Andrew have a gem of a place and we would highly recommend staying here. Absolutely fantastic.
Janice and Andrew were great hosts too, always on hand if we needed anything. Loved the complimentary shortbread! That our break was over and we had to leave!
