- Julia Wilton (10/5): Amazing traditional experience - The smart Japanese design which makes clever use of every space. The communal eating space with tea tray. The delightful private garden. The bath with view of garden, the washing machine, the sleeping spaces. If you're used to soft western beds, or have back/hip issues, the futons could be tricky, but fun to try. Bus stop right outside, or easy taxi into centre. Absolutely spot-on traditional accommodation. Nothing, it was perfect.

- Suzana (10/5): True Kyoto old house style experience - I liked how it looks and I liked that we had a cleaner coming every few days. I liked everything

- Tom (10/5): Fantastic traditional Japanese home in a great location. Awesome bath with view of garden! - Traditional Japanese home Bigger room could be double bed or option to make up as double
- CHUNYING (10/5): 地理位置很優秀 - 標準的日式小屋
環境乾淨舒適 無

- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yulin (5/5): Disappointing and overpriced - The bath that looked over the garden. But that is all. The property is well worn and needs maintenance. The photos do not show this.
Its on a busy street and I could not sleep due to the traffic noise. There is a bar next door and voices can be heard at night.
There is a washer but no dryer so it takes a long time to air dry clothes. There is nowhere to hang clothes.
The sink for washing your face and brushing your teeth is in the kitchen.
It is overpriced.
There are very few restaurants nearby. It is far from the train station. It was difficult to get a taxi.
- Doh-kyeong (10/5): Perfect! - Very cozy, calm & peaceful place. Just as I imagined.
- Melissa (10/5): Amazing authentic ryokan with the best amenities. - Amazing location, comfortable beds, authentic breakfast delivered every morning. Washer and dryer was a huge plus. If you’re looking for an authentic ryokan, definitely stay here! None

- Lucy (9/5): Great home to relax with family with beautiful athethics. Thankyou. - Rented the property for the traditional aspect. Meet expectations. Lovely tea set and accessories with quality tea provided and instructions on how to prepare. Enjoyed reading the books provided about the history, architecture of the homes and the current support the homes are generating for their preservation. Enjoyed the books on art too and the various ornaments and drawings within the home. Felt tastefully done, icing on the top would have been fresh flowers in the vase. Apprecitaed the supplied kiminos, quality soaps and washer/dryer. All very practical and well considered for a comftable stay.
Also found the host very quick and informative in replying to my questions via email, thank-you. Would have loved for her to stay to have shared some tea and a conversation before she left, potentially the language barrier and considered cultural differences had an effect. But all in all we love kyoto and the town house. It was a pleasureable treat! Unfortunatly, through no fault of the house the road noise was loud within the bedroom facing the road, made sleeping a tad difficult. The host had provided earplugs to help eliviate the noise.
Felt the house needed some attention. ie, maintance of bathroom door (seemed the water had affected it), floor boards seemed weathered and may benifit from a polish. In the overall stay, these things did not significantly affect our stay - easily overlooked for the privilage of the stay :-)
- Paul (9/5): A fantastic Kyoto experience - Great ambience, felt very authentic. Good space. Fantastic location near public transport. Great washing machine!! It was on a busy road, it was noisy, but we got used to it. It would have been really helpful if they had left a list of recommended restaurants etc…
- Edwards (10/5): Exceptional -
- Huishan (8/5): Good experience - The house is beautiful and located in a great area. During check-in, the staff gave us a detailed tour, explaining all the features and appliances. It was a unique experience immersing ourselves in the traditional Japanese lifestyle. However, the cleanliness could be improved as we noticed cobwebs on the ceilings throughout the house, especially the living room and the living room closet.
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional! - The property was a quaint Japanese Ryokan and was very traditional with a modern touch Nothing - it was amazing!
- Michelle (9/5): Superb -
- Daphne (8/5): Very good - Traditional house Location is a bit far from center
- Lovato (7/5): Great location. Could use modern upgrades for storage and appliances. - Central location. Near transportation. Very clean and comfortable beds. Great shower and bath area. Not alot of space to store belongings. Little to no closet space. Washing machine and appliances older and small/slow.
- Gwongjen (8/5): Very good -
- Samuel (9/5): Amazing stay in Kyoto - This was a fantastic experience staying in a traditional ryokan. It was very cosy and peaceful with the garden overlooked from the dining room and bathroom It was a little noisy due to the road, but not too much of an issue
- Ioanna (8/5): Very good - The breakfast was ok. Although since it was traditional Japanese, I needed explanation on what I was tasting. I believe that an explanatory leaflet would be great! There was some noise from the road.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Iris (10/5): Exceptional stay in Kyoto. Close to buses and subway line - Everything was wonderful. Loved having the living room to relax during the day and the washer/dryer.
- Meleana (10/5): We had a lovely stay here, we just loved the character of the house. Very efficient checking in process and we were able - Authentic character
- Anh (10/5): The highlight of our Kyoto trip - Beautiful machiya house with great amenities and fantastic location. We love the”zen” vibe that the property brings. It was a super comfortable stay (we didn’t want to leave!). The place is rich in culture but also very modern when it comes to facilities (underfloor heating, kitchen, bathroom etc.). We absolutely love the bathtub with a view to the garden.
The Kuraya team is very attentive, responsive and so thoughtful. They even prepared a lovely surprise for my son’s birthday.
The bus stop is right in front of the property. It’s very easy to get to various sightseeing places, especially Nijo Castle and Arashiyama. It’s within 3’ walk to a great udon restaurant (Kasugai) and a pretty popular bakery (Maruki).
We will only stay here every time we come to Kyoto!
- Christopher (10/5): Cool historical house that is maintained very well. - The property was very clean and had a good washer/dryer. The shower/tub was very nice. The heated floors were great. Right next to bus stop. The futons could be more comfortable. They were really thin. Definitely could use minimum two pillows per guest. Please add more pillows. AC could be better.

- Bryan (8/5): Good mix of old and new - I liked the feel and atmosphere of the house. It had the old architecture and feel while also having modern conveniences. The owners were very helpful with accommodating our needs and helping us having a very good Kaiseki meal. A little out of the way location wise (need to walk a around 5-10 min to the nearest train stop). Not many major landmarks or tourist spots around.
- Yuan (10/5): It’s a happy journey -
- Thaveesak (8/5): Very good -
- Youri (9/5): Wonderful traditional home in the middle of Kyoto. Don’t miss out. - Superb traditional house in a great location at Kyoto. What more would you want? We also discovered a great little bakery not far from there which made this even better than it was.
The rooms on the second floor were rather big as well as the beds.
Bathroom and living room were really superb. Towels were even refreshed after two days I believe which was very appreciated.
With the outside temperature being really high the aircooling was working beautifully and was just the cherry on the top of an already beautiful cake.
We didn’t interact hugely with the owners but they were very friendly and the explanation and reactivity to our messages on booking were very appreciated.
Also the digital key was great in case of our group splitting up and not having to worry about who has the key or where it’s stored etc. It just adds to the overall good points.
Last but not least, it’s not far from a bus stop(s) which can get you almost anywhere in the city that is worth your while. Nothing that I can think of.
