• annick_drey (10/5): A lovely place to stay for anyone planning a safari in Yala - We only stayed one night at Kataragama Homestay before our safari in Yala, but we really enjoyed our stay. The room was pleasant, the bed comfortable, and the small terrace surrounded by greenery made the place feel peaceful and relaxing. We booked our safari through their provider in Block 1 since Block 5 was flooded, and we were not disappointed at all. Visiting in May meant there were fewer tourists, which made the experience even better. We were even lucky enough to spot a leopard!

Nous avons été très bien accueilli par les hôtes, attentifs et attentionnés, dans leur havre de paix niché dans une nature verdoyante. Le logement est conforme aux photos, aménagé avec goût, d’une propreté impeccable et le petit coin terrasse est très agréable. Le lit est grand et très confortable. Les hôtes nous ont organisé un safari à Yala National Park, tout était parfait, et ils se sont également chargé de nous trouver un chauffeur pour notre étape suivante ce qui était très appréciable ! Le petit déjeuner était délicieux, nous nous sommes régalés. Un sans faute, je reviendrais avec grand plaisir si je dois à nouveau séjourner dans la région.

• Fernanda (9/5): - I had a wonderful stay here! The location is peaceful and features a beautiful garden. The rooms are very nice and clean. While the property isn't located right in the village center, it is perfectly situated—just a short walk away, or a quick ride using the bicycles you can conveniently borrow right on site. I also recommend booking a safari directly through the homestay. I did this and had a great experience; the guide was friendly, experienced, and made the whole trip memorable. Nothing! Everything was great and I had a perfectly lovely stay.

• Lucy (10/5): Comfortable and elegant Homestay - We loved our stay here and were sad to leave! The two guest rooms have been recently renovated so they were very clean and elegantly designed inside and out. Nice furniture and good air conditioning. The surrounding gardens were beautiful, full of fruit trees attracting a range of birds. We even had a monitor lizard stroll past us on the terrace! Our hosts were warm and friendly hosts and the Homestay was only a short walk or cycle from the town centre and sacred precinct. All in all an excellent experience and superb value for money.

The room is more spacious than it appears in picture. The room has a mosquito net and a vaporizer. The price they charge is reasonable. If you plan to enter yala national park using the back gate, I recommend staying at this homestay. The bathroom window lets in bugs but this is the same design everywhere in Sri Lanka.

• Harry (10/5): Great base to explore Yala and Kataragama - Lovely and new building. 1 of 2 units. We really enjoyed our stay here. The room is a good size, and perfectly clean. The AC is effective, and the shower room is good. Outside, there is a hammock and chairs to relax. The family are able to manage organising a safari in Yala. We also decided to stay beyond our safari and exploring Kataragama is absolutely worth spending an extra day for. The family provide bikes which make exploring the town easy as it is not far by bike (5 mins) Cannot fault it.

Wir haben auch die Safari über die Unterkunft gebucht. Die Klimaanlage ist etwas laut und im Bad war ein komischer Geruch, aber das ist meckern auf hohem Niveau ;)

Das Bett ist sehr bequem und hat ein Mückennetz, es gibt ausreichend Ablagemöglichkeiten und einen Kühlschrank sowie Wasserkocher. Die große Terrasse verfügt über verschiedene Sitzmöglichkeiten und eine Hängematte, von der sich aus Vögel und Affen beobachten lassen. Der Host hat uns sehr freundlich empfangen und auf Anfrage vorab eine Safari in den Yala- Nationalpark organisiert. Dafür ist das Homestay der ideale Ausgangspunkt, weil man über den nördlichen weniger frequentierten Eingang in den Nationalpark fährt. Wir waren für eine Nacht da und haben eine Morgensafari gemacht.

This was one of our favourite stays in Sri Lanka, the room was modern, clean, had nice hot showers and in a perfect location. They allowed us to use the bikes for free so we could ride into town for dinner, we recommend the Wild Edge restaurant. The hosts were lovely we were greeted with traction our arrival. They organised a safari for us and it was the best experience we’ve had so far! I would 100% recommend people to stay here! nothing :)

Сразу же брали у них сафари. Ездили утром, в джипе были только мы с мужем, водитель, его маленький сын и в парке к нам присоединился гид, который помогал нам находить животных и рассказывал интересные факты. Нам очень всё понравилось, самые искренние рекомендации 🫶

Notre chambre était vraiment adorable, impeccablement propre, avec un grand lit équipé d’une moustiquaire, la climatisation et un ventilateur. Il y avait même un frigo, ce qui est très appréciable. Nous avons également réservé le safari du matin par leur intermédiaire, et tout était parfaitement organisé. Nous avons eu un guide génial et, sans doute aussi un peu de chance, car nous avons pu observer un magnifique léopard, des éléphants, des buffles, un paon faisant la roue, des biches, des cerfs… ainsi qu’une multitude d’oiseaux. Une expérience absolument fabuleuse que nous recommandons vivement.

The staff was truly hospitable and helpful, and took care of organizing our entire safari in Yala National Park. We didn't sleep very well because unfortunately the air conditioning, even if present, didn't work and the room was very hot.

• Pietro (7/5): - Il posto è bello e accogliente, la famiglia che ospita è gentile e simpatica. La camera è bella, soprattutto per quel che costa paragonato ad altri posti in Sri Lanka. Non fate assolutamente il safari con loro. Noi abbiamo prenotato il Safari mattiniero (half day) con una guida con orario 5:30-12:00. La guida è il ragazzo che lavora presso la struttura e non è del tutto idoneo al ruolo di guida turistica e sopratutto ci hanno fatto uscire dal parco Yala alle 10:30, ossia 1:30h prima di quanto preventivato. Si sono giustificati con una scusa banale di errata comunicazione con il driver ma non è possibile rientrare nel parco una volta usciti. Ci hanno offerto uno sconto minimo per il costo totale della struttura + safari ma comunque non è stata per niente una bella esperienza. Alloggiate qui ma non fate il safari con loro

• Alba (7/5): Estancia aceptable - Está cerca de Kataragama para poder ir andando. A unos 15 minutos. La atención nos dejó un poco que desear, es cierto que al llegar nos ofrecieron un té pero después no tuvimos más contacto con la anfitriona, a pesar de ser un homestay. Para nosotros la cama aunque fuese grande nos resultó incómoda. Aunque tenía mosquitera había muchos bichos en la habitación y salimos llenos de picaduras. La habitación está equipada con aire acondicionado lo que hace la estancia mucho más agradable. Teníamos dos noches reservadas pero nos resultó algo incómodo todo y nos fuimos al día siguiente. Al marcharnos antes de tiempo no salió a preguntar qué sucedía, nos atendió alguien de su familia que nos cobró las dos noches. No pudimos desayunar allí y a pesar de tener los desayunos incluidos tampoco preguntaron nada, pero si que lo cobraron.

• Forsyth (7/5): A night on the outskirts of Tissamaharama🤟 - I was offered tea upon my arrival by a very friendly and welcoming lady, whom I presume was managing the rooms, and an elderly aunty!! The accommodation is VERY basic, no frills like a tiled bathroom, etc. but it was spotlessly clean, and the bed, white linen, pillows, and room were comfortable and spacious. There was a small fridge, fan and air conditioner - what a bonus!! 🙏🏻💥Due to the rain, coupled with the hot and humid conditions, there were lots of mosquitoes, so I needed the fan, mosquito net, and aircon to keep the mozzies at bay. There was a lovely large veranda (with a beautiful hammock) that opened onto a green but muddy garden due to the recent rain! I enjoyed sitting on the veranda and relaxed in the afternoon, while I waited for my room to be made up (my room had been given to another guest who had booked in just before me🙈😳) The bathroom was just cement finishes with, no tiles. It had a large walk-in shower, hand basin, and toilet, with a mirror and basin light. No soap or shampoo was provided. Luckily, I had packed travel shower gel and shampoo, so I was sorted 🙏🏻 I left the property at 5 am. for my Yala safari, so NO breakfast, tea, or coffee were offered. For the price paid, I could not complain, and I had a decent night's rest in the air-conditioned room.👍🌸 It was a little too rustic for my liking. I do like to feel a little spoilt even when staying in a home stay! 😃The shower floor was extremely slippery, so I suggest a rubber shower mat to prevent guests from slipping in the shower. Possibly add a small "travel" bar of soap for guests to use! The property is located about 22 kms outside of Tissamaharama, so it was quite a distance to travel into town for dinner and back again. As it was so far out of town, my safari driver could not enter Yala through the main gate so we used a secondary gate and I had to pay more for him to collect and drop me off. Something to bare in mind when planning a safari from this venue.

• Karen (9/5): Great accommodation and town teeming with wildlife. - Cool and quirky accommodation, we loved the style. We were met with a welcome and tea by the kind host which was appreciated. The room, bed and bathroom were all spacious. No hot water but we've got used to tepid showers which are fine. The breakfast was lovely too! We stopped in Kataragama as we were heading to Udawalawe the next day, the town was an unexpected surprise. We visited one of the temples and the town is teeming with wildlife. Fabulous! I'd definitely come again if we visit Sri Lanka. Thank you.
• Lauren (9/5): Superb - We loved our short time at Kataragama Homestay, the hosts and their children were very sweet and welcoming and we felt well looked after there. The accomodation itself is great, with a nice spacious bed, clean shower, and a beautiful patio surrounded by plants. The breakfast in the morning was also very tasty. We left one night early because the safari we had booked was sadly cancelled due to the rain, but I wish we could have stayed for longer. An absolutely ideal homestay!

Beautiful garden with spacious room. The Grandmother made me some different food to try with each breakfast, very tasty. Nice quiet location, easy walk into town and bus station. Make sure to bring adequate mosquito protection for when sat outside.

Good communications throughout and family friendly and helpful. Quiet and peaceful, a little way from the holy site but easily walkable, plenty of tuctucs around if needed. Great value for money. Couldn't get any hot water from the shower but didn't mind too much as it was hot so don't know if it could have been fixed

The lady Karunawathi is very sweet. I was so happy I could use their bicycle. I went all over Kataragama, probably I did more than 50km by bike! For me it's the best way of discovering a place. The guesthouse is quite close to the road; the road is not very busy but still there was this motor noise. I love silence so much. But it's a common problem all over Sri Lanka: you really have to search for quietness.

• Dominic (9/5): Superb - - good stay in Katharagama, basically a family home with a nice garden -the room is air-insulated from outside, which is quite rare among hotels in SL. No need to run the AC continuously as it keeps cool all night -lovely breakfast in the garden area - there is a mosquito bed net, but with some mosquitoes inside, the net should be always close to avoid this issue.

• Simon (10/5): Fantastic value for money in a green oasis. - A beautiful, slightly hidden gem in Kataragama. The town is in walking distance. The lovely family welcomed me with tea and snacks and brought me into the super clean and fancy room including fan and A/C, as well as a comfortable bed. The bathroom is super big and clean as well. I got a proper breakfast including tea again.
• Antonia (8/5): Very good - Lovely breakfast, beautiful room with a very comfy bed. We slept very well! Hosts were kind and sweet. Unfortunately our safari that was booked through the homestay was quite late and this was frustrating. But the host was very apologetic and took some money off, which was very gracious.
• Sofia (10/5): Exceptional - The Perfect home stay, a wonderful and loving family. We spent two nights at this calming place. The host made us feel safe and welcomed, a lovely experience.
