Guest Reviews
- Tithi Mukherjee (10/5): Must stay - Loved the homestay so much extended by a few more nights. The family is adorable, there is a small op shop in front for your immediate needs. The host Paulus is amazing. Quiet location and great views of the rice paddy fields. Nothing.

Bon esmorzar (pancakes enormes!)
- Joffre (10/5): Little gem - Whether you stay in the room in the front or the penthouse at the back , you’ll have an amazing stay! The family is such a joy to spend time with and don’t hesitate to reach for Paulus, he is a proud torajan man that will take you on a tour and give you insights from the every place.
- Simon (1/5): - Just don't

- Ronald (10/5): - Within walking distance from town centre.
Paulus and Erni are great hosts who can give you lots of information about touristic places and how to go there. If possible Paulus can be your guide, otherwise he can arrange one for you.
Both will also provide a nice breakfast of your choice with fruit and coffee.
Rooms are spacious and clean.
Motorbikes are for rental.

- Margarita (10/5): Amazing hospitality in a rustic house amoungst rice fields - I really enjoyed my stay. I felt at home in this place and with the Host's family. What I liked the most is how flexible , responsive, supportive and easy going the hosts were. They allowed me to use the kitchen and fridge, gave me lifts to and from the bus station with my luggage, recommended things to do and took me to see local highlights, lent me waterproof clothing and pillow for the motorbike, and even did my laundry..I was able to negotiate the prices for sightseeing tours which were affordable for me - I am grateful for this.. The accomodation is good too - a very decent one in its class/price bracket. Fairly spacious rooms which have the view of the rice fields. Each room has its own un-suite bathroom (as typical for this type of accommodation no hot water, but the host kindly allowed me to use the shower downstairs which had hot water). It is a traditional countryside house so the walls are wooden/thin but somehow the host family and guests all respect the quiet hours so I was able to sleep well. It is a short (around 10 mins ) walk from the city but that is actually great - as I have no idea how would anyone want to stay in that city, that city is really noisy and full of traffic. Thank God this accommodation is a bit out of the way and you can get some sleep. I hope if I ever return to Tana Toraja I will visit again.
- Sina (10/5): They are doing God's work - Everything was great. God bless their families' souls
I felt so comfortable with the huge room and delicious breakfasts every morning. Maybe a bit far from city center but close to other attractions so its not really a minus.
- Sanne (10/5): Exceptional - Great hosts, great accommodation, great breakfast!
- Lorella (6/5): Pleasant -
- Julie (7/5): Semi stay - Good location, scooter rent possible, good banana pancakes Scooter rent is more expensive compared to others
A lot of noise during the night
The guide, who was a friend of the owner, is more expensive then other guys. No space for talking about it. We did not feel comfortable.
No warm shower.
- J.marc (6/5): The outstanding owners make you forget the shortcomings of Purabarang Homestay - The owners are very friendly and helpful Noisy due to a nearby karaoke by nighttime and a church service early morning
A bit out of town
Basic accommodation
- Craig (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent breakfast. Fruit, fresh juice and pancake/omelette made fresh.
10 mins walk from the town.
Owner was able to arrange tours for funerals and rent a scooter for us. Nothing.
- Luca (9/5): Feel at home - Friendly, very hosting, close to the center but in the middle of the rice field, perfect. Room very big.
- Martin (10/5): A great place to stay offering excellent value. I would highly recommend it! - I loved the location with amazing views from the balcony of the property. Paulus and his wife were both extremely helpful with any requests such as organising trips around Toraja and event drove me to the bus station on my return. Breakfast was delicious also!
I found it a great opportunity also to meet other guests travelling around Sulawesi.
- Akash (10/5): Beautiful Village Beautiful Family Great Experience - Location is just awesome, you get the full vibe of a hilly village and the main city is just at walkable distance. But the main highlight is the family, they are so hardworking nd humble. Everything is Perfect
- Marie (8/5): We will come back happily in this guest house to discover more about the toraya region - The family welcoming us was really nice, everyone was really kind and ready to help us for anything. Paolus was an amazing guide, he told us a lot about Toraya region, traditions, ceremonies and beliefs. His wife food was one of the best we had during our time in Sulawesi, specially her breakfast pancakes. The house is surrounded by rice fields so there were a lot of noises during the night: frogs, dogs, bikes and the restaurant near by was organising karakoes every night until late, so we had not slept so well.
- Reggy (10/5): Good place close to the centrum. - Very kind owner. Nice room good bed. We liked the type of house like a wooden house. Good place close to the centrum. Nothing.
- Camille (10/5): The best place to stay in Tana Toraja - We had an amazing 4-days stay at Purabarang. The room is big and clean, with a private bathroom with hot shower, and a nice terrace above the paddy fields. Breakfast was delicious everyday. But mostly, Paulus and his family made us feel at home. Paulus guided us to a funeral ceremony and a day tour in some villages. He speaks very well English so you can learn many things on the Toraja country. He also helped us book transportation and homestay for our next destination. We could rent him scooter to visit the region. We highly recommend this homestay!!
- Ffion (10/5): Exceptional - We had such a nice stay at Purabarang, the owners are so lovely and make an effort to make you feel welcomed even when we turned up at 4am. The house is in a beaten location backing onto rice fields and we had a gorgeous view from our room. On top of all this it was so cheap and the breakfast was delicious cooked by paulus’ wife. Paulus is also a tour guide and took us to see one of the traditional funeral which was an amazing experience. We definitely recommend staying here especially if you want to learn more about the ancient traditions of people in Tana Toraja.
- Jan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Witter (9/5): Wonderful experience in Toraja - do go - The house is well sited, on the edge of the town but with beautiful views. We really enjoyed staying with the family and had excellent guided tours with the host, who is very knowledgeable. They really take care of guests. There is very loud singing early in the morning from a city church - not the family's fault but not great for sleep at 5am!
- Matic (10/5): Exceptional - Honest and friendly people, easy-going, helpful (earplugs, mosquito net- although not needed, hot shower, transport - everything was arranged). We felt comfortable to express our wishes or doubts about planning every following day according to how we felt and what was possible to see in the area. The family helped us with all the practicalities. Wonderful 🙏Terima kasih, Paulus!
- Ivona (10/5): Amazing experience, we will be back soon! 🌸 -
- Jenny (9/5): Superb - Paulus and his family were the perfect hosts. Paulus arranged tours of all the main sites and was an excellent guide. The breakfast pancakes were amazing. An airy large room with views out ovet the rice fields yet only a short walk into town. Excellent value for money. Nothing, everything was excellent.
- Daniel (9/5): Superb - great owner, they care about everything
provided bus ticket
provided motorbike
help us with every question
completely recommended
- Léa (10/5): Exceptional - Paulus and Ernie were absolutely great hosts, Paulus do guided tours or arrange guided tours for you, and Ernie cooks delicious breakfasts. The surroundings are beautiful and peaceful, the bedding was great as well The shower wasn't working very well, but I could take showers downstairs so it didn't really bother me
- Astari (9/5): Place to Stay in Toraja - Location is perfect !
15 minute walking from Bintang Timur Pool Bus. 20 minutes driving to Kete Ketsu and Londa.
We can rent motorbike also, just pay IDR 125,000 day
Pak Paulus and his wife treat us very well. Btw we love the breakfast!! Fried Rice 👌🏼.
Will stay here again for sure!! nothing
- Miha (10/5): Exceptional - I would suggest everybody travelling to Toraja to spend few days here! Everything here was so perfect that I even do not know where to start. Owner of the homestay was one of the most helpful man I have ever met. He helped us with the transport to Toraja, to rent a scooter and most importantly, he was our guide and showed us some really awsome ceremonies in Toraja. Also his wife can make the best pancakes for the breakfast. We only stayed there for 4 nights but we could easily spend here more then 10 nights, as we felt really welcomed and Toraja is really unique place, where every day is new advanture. The best place that I have visited during my trip to Indonesia!
- Tatjana (9/5): Warmly welcomed by Paulus and Ernie. - Great location in walking distance to the centre of Rantepao, in the middle of rice fields (nice walks through the neighbourhood recommended). Spacious room and lovely hosts.
- Christopher (9/5): Very nice and warmly welcomed, recommendable :) - Nice rooms, owner very helpful and friendly. Staying one more night spontanously was not a problem. Centrally located. We could also rent a scooter and that worked pretty well.
We arrived with a night bus and they even let us in at 6am in the morning, provided us some tea and coffee and we could use our room. Thats exceptional :) Very loud. In the morning, approx. 1000 roosters crowing, it is incredible. Additionally, the church (as everywhere in Sulawesi) makes a lot of noise.
The owner organized a guide for us which unfortunately we can absolutely not recommend. His english was not good, he had no plan what exactly he wants to do with us, gave us only little information and could not answer some of our questions, drove forever with us with scooter around the area and got lost. Absolutely no value for money. Later, we saw hin in a café harassing other female tourists.
- Suriyati (10/5): Exceptional -
- Dominique (10/5): A beautiful place -
- Mark (9/5): Superb - Lovely host family. Paulus (host) did take us to a Torajan funeral as a guide. Also he arranged a rental motorbike/moped for us. His wife Ernie makes the best banana pancakes for breakfast!!
- Mar (10/5): 100% recommend it. Like being at home 👌🏼 - Pablo and his wife were an amazing hosts. They made us feel like being at home. 100% recommend it. He is also guide and took us to the ceremonies of the funeral. Also took us with his motorbike to the bus station.. He really was so nice! Karaoke at night a bit noisy.
I would change the breakfast or give other options
- Elena (10/5): Highly recommended! - Super hosts—picked us up from the bus stop early in the morning, organized a tour guide and motorbike rental for us, delicious banana pancakes for breakfast, laundry service, found us bus tickets and brought our luggage to the bus station for us after checkout. Highly recommended! No hot water in the room, but they let us use the hot shower downstairs (better than most places, just worth noting!). If you’re a light sleeper bring ear plugs, because there’s loud karaoke nearby every night, and then the mosque and the church start playing loud music around 4am until maybe 5-5:30.
- Max (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed 4 nigths at Purabarang homestay and we really enjoyed our time there! The house is located beautifully next to rice fields and mountains but is still really close to central rantepao. Paulus and Ernie and their family are incredibly friendly, helpful and speak english very well. Paulus helped us with everything, like renting a scooter and organizing a visit to a traditional funeral ceremony in Toraja. He is a great guide, super accomodating and he for example even was so kind to drop us off at the busstation on our last day. We were really cared for, the food was delicious and we absolutely recommend Purabarang homestay!
