Guest Reviews
- Linsen (10/5): We had the most amazing stay. Shino made us feel so at home, and gave great advice for our hike. - Shino made us the most amazingly delicious breakfast - a traditional Japanese one, that left us well prepared for our second day of hiking the Kumano Kodo.
- Silvia (8/5): - Very comfortable and very cute cottage in a lovely location. Gorgeous view of the river valley. Quiet, clean, well appointed. I would have been happy to stay longer! As is common in Japan, it was a little cramped for the taller members of our party.
- James (9/5): Nice place, great food but best to be on time - The location is fine, a little out of the centre of Chikatsuyu. Meals provided - dinner, lunch and breakfast - were all excellent. The room is spacious and well appointed, being newly fitted out. The bathroom ceiling height is a little low for me (1.91m/6'3") and I couldn't stand up straight. Shino is a busy lady and she seemed displeased that we didn't walk the 24km from Hongu quickly enough to meet her before 6pm. She also expressed a concern that I might not pay for my meals, which I found surprising.
- Bonny (8/5): A comfortable, relaxing and spacious home - I loved the easy walk through the village. It was spacious, with a wonderful soaking tub and a nice view from the living room. The breakfast at the cafe was delicious. The bus stop was right in front of the cafe.
- Fecher (10/5): Very great stay, I can’t wait to be back - Shino was a great hostess. She had a lot of insight into the area that was real helpful. The cottage itself was amazing; both spacious and very well decorated and comfortable. I would go back again in a heartbeat! Nothing, everything was perfect
- SHU WEN (10/5):

- Jackie (10/5): Nice big quiet place after a day of hiking. - Nice big quiet place. Hostess was extremely friendly and made sure to explain everything to us. We opted for dinner at reservation time and it was brought to us. It was delicious! It was a little bit of a walk to get there from main town and luckily a local elderly gentleman who knew the place guided us. Other than that, all was good.

- Yimeng (10/5): Cozy and relaxing - Comfortable after a tiring day and the hostess was really nice, who prepared the delicious dinner boxes for us. We would choose the same cottage next time here. Nothing
- Yun Jia (10/5): - Great location, very comfortable to stay in.
The host makes very yummy and beautiful vegetarian meals and can also make a lunch box for the day. Only down side is the bathroom area get very cold at night
- Martijn (5/5): Not worth the price point - Comfortable, traditional Japanese house. Had everything you need for the night. Nice location. Food was great quality. Felt very overpriced for what was offered and the service provided. One bedroom has no heater in the night so got very cold.
Service felt very rushed and inflexible.
No handwash and out of date milk for the coffee. Overall not worth the price point.

- James (10/5): - Conveniently located in Chikatsuyu and near a bus stop, we had a great time staying at the cottage while
hiking the Kumano Kodō. Shino-san was a great host and in addition to dinner at the house and breakfast at her nearby cafe, we ordered a tasty bento lunch from her to take on the trail.

- Kelsey (10/5): - We were very pleased with our stay at kumanoyasai cottage. Shino was a wonderful host, spoke fantastic English, and provided tasty and hot meals. We highly recommend.
- Gabriela (10/5): - Absolutely loved our stay! I was hiking with a group of five friends and we stayed here the first night of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage. Shio was an amazing host and the house itself was wonderful. Very warm with heating and a hot table (amazing!)!
Upon request and additional payment, dinner, lunch and breakfast were provided. The meals were absolutely delicious and catered to pescatarian. Shio also helped us book a bus ticket as we took a bus the next day for the first 5km of the hike. Such a fantastic and helpful host, we loved staying here! Thank you! 😊
- Lauren (7/5): Cozy and spacious cottage on Kumano Kodo with amazing host - We stayed here while walking the Kumano Kodo. The cottage is both very spacious and cosy with lots of thoughtful amenities to make your stay comfortable. It is set within nature, yet easy walking distance to food/the supermarket. The host, Shino, is the best we have had on our trip. She was extremely communicative and responsive, organised our luggage transfer, and even made lovely recommendations like to go outside and look at the stars. It may be worth having a clothes horse in the living room as we found the dehumidifier didn’t dry our clothes overnight. Otherwise, everything is perfect.
- David (10/5): Incredible, cozy cottage in a small village with super kind owner! - Shino is suuuuch a great person. She took care of us right from the beginnung, advised us on our tour planning, made dinner, breakfast and lunch boxes. The cottage is incredible, huge, much larger than on the pictures and soo comfortable. Wonderful nights sleep and the heated blanket was amazing. Thanks for everything! Maybe a Little cold at night, but with heated blankets no problem.
- KAI (10/5): I had a wonderful stay here! The room is spacious and fully equipped with everything you might need. The host, Shino, is - I had a wonderful stay here! The room is spacious and fully equipped with everything you might need. The host, Shino, is extremely kind and caring — she even asked about my travel plans for the next day and helped me reserve the local bus through her phone. Her English is excellent, and communication was effortless. The breakfast she personally prepares is absolutely delicious and made with great care. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area! No
- Derek (9/5): Great location and host - Comfortable cottage at a great location. Very helpful host that helps with the logistics
- David (10/5): Lovely cottage in great location with a fun, interesting and informative host - Shino has created a charming and cute cottage that is very convenient as a stopover on the kumano kodo. It is tastefully decorated with retro furniture and cool sliding doors.
Shino supplied us with a very tasty evening meal and breakfast and also a great bento box for the next day hiking. When we arrived we grabbed a well earned home made muffin and coffee which were delicious It was all good

- Ricardo (10/5): - The Cottage is just near the restaurants, bakery and supermarket. It has amazing views of the rice fields and mountains. The typical japanese style livingroom is really cozy. There are a lot of mosquitos everywhere in the village (it is normal if you are sorrounded by nature). Fortunately, the place was equipped with mosquito nets.
- Just Jen (8/5): Beautifully furnished & comfortable cottage - Beautifully furnished cottage 10 minute walk from Chikatsuyu. Comfortable beds and couch with air conditioning throughout. Bonus, fast washing machine for our smelly hiking clothes, fresh & dry for the next day. Beautiful sunset colours looking over rice fields and the river towards the hills. Host incredibly friendly. We ordered all the meals (extra cost) from Shino and they were delicious! Breakfast at her café in town included a hot bagel. Price was very high compared to other accommodation on the Kumano Kodo trail. No wifi in the house. Slightly out of town (10 minute walk)
- Wenlan (10/5): - Clean, comfortable and with nice views. Convenient position in Chikatsuyu-oji, 10 min walk from bus station and 4 min walk from grocery store. The owner is super nice and share lots of information for traveling. Dinner box is delicate and abundant. There are washing machine and full kitchen. Really enjoy the stay and waking up in birds’ singing in the morning.

- R J Brouwer (10/5): Great place to spend the night and dinner + breakfast as part of the Kumano Kodo. - Spacious house, really clean, not far from the village. The dinner was perfect, served in bento boxes what was super after hiking the Kumano Kodo for a full day. Next morning we had breakfast in the cafe that the owner runs, right next to the bus stop. Both breakfast and location were perfect. Nothing.
- Nisha (8/5): - The whole cottage was amazing, clean and comfortable. I would stay an additional night if I had the time. Absolutely beautiful and peaceful. I would recommend directly letting the host know if you want it do not want dinner.
- Katherine (8/5): Nice quiet stay with comfortable beds and delicious food! - The home is located in a very rural town with a view of the rice paddies. It was very quiet and comfortable. Our host, Shino, provided us with a delicious bento box for dinner. Shino had us meet at her cafe for breakfast and then gave us lunch boxes for the next leg of our journey. Overall a very nice experience. nothing
- Ruta (10/5): Exceptional - This cottage is in a really wonderful and picturesque spot, you can watch the sunset from the terrace in the house. The house is very comfortable and beautifully decorated. The owner was very kind and welcoming. We ordered vegan dinner, breakfast and lunch boxes as it was a stop on Kumano Kodo hike. The food was great although does need to be ordered in advance. This was one of our favourite places we stayed in Japan.
- Tulitha (9/5): A lovely cottage refuge after a strenuous hike - As a solo traveller I did float around in the accommodation a little bit, but I could definitely imagine staying here with a group. It would be perfect!
Shino was a perfect hostess and tour guide all in one. The bento box for dinner, breakfast and lunch box were perfect for me. Tea, coffee and milk is provided.
After an exhausting hike she really took care of me.
- Ralf (10/5): Great one-day stay on the Kumano Kodo trail. - Host prepated a lovely dinner for us.
Very roomy and very comfortable main beds (2).
- Mie (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed one night in connection with hiking the Kumano-Kodo trail. The house was both large and cozy and equipped with everything we needed. Shino is such a kind and helpful host. We also requested breakfast, lunch and dinner, and everything was delicious.
Overall a wonderful experience, and we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
- Samantha (10/5): Great stay! - Cute cottage, very comfortable and well equipped! Perfect location to rest after our Kumano kodo walk. Shino was very friendly, prompt in her replies and made sure everything was in place during check in.
- Juan (10/5): Perfect stay for the Kumano Kodo trail. Thank you to our host Shino. - Confortable, authentic , spotless. Shino is a wonderful host who takes care of all the details. She is always responsive and helped us find our way in the Kumano Kodo trail. Also her cooking is amazing, make sure you include her meals.
- Bipin (10/5): Her thoughtfulness is touchingly evident. 🙏🏾 - Thank you Shino! The dinner box was epic. Also the help with travel from Kii-tanabe.
- Deborah (10/5): Take things slow and appreciate the local economy and hospitality... - We were 3 adult family members who were walking the Kumano Kodo trail backwards. The accommodations were lovely sitting on the porch overlooking the valley at dusk and particularly enjoyed the hail storm of the century as Shino delivered our dinner. We also loved experiencing breakfast at her cafe the next morning.
- Darlene (10/5): We LOVED this place!!!!! - Beautiful village, wonderful views of river and mountains. Spacious home with comfortable beds and window nooks to relax and enjoy the views. Close to the trails for hiking and great local food! Grocery store, bakery, gift shop. Very friendly community!
- Hai (10/5): Exceptional - enjoyed reading through your architectural tips! We are also incredibly grateful for the delicious meals you prepared—we were well fed and well cared for. It has been a pleasure meeting you, and we look forward to seeing you again!
- Lubos (10/5): Exceptional - The property owner is very helpful and friendly. Good communication before the arrival. She arranged dinner and breakfast (both delicious). Also arranged luggage transport to the next destination. It all went smoothly and effortlessly.
It is possible to do laundry in the cottage. This might be handy after hiking at Kumano Kodo for couple of days.
- Zhe (10/5): Only apologies we need to send is to break the heater and guest does need to follow the host on instruction (we were bit - Everything’s perfect, just everyone wished we can stay one more night! And the best of the best is the food and devotion we find with the host lady! Nothing
- Lyndree (10/5): Comfortable and luxurious experience while enjoying the peace, quiet, and serenity of a moutain village. - Beautiful cottage. Clean. Impressive interiors. Amazing view of the village. Comfortable. Warm. Complete with all the amenities. Communication with the owner is fast and smooth. Lovely meals. None.
