Guest Reviews
- Andrea (5/5): Wouldn’t book a holiday home again but would stay at the hotel. - Hotel staff was amazing and helpful. I loved that all hotel amenities were available even when booking the holiday home. Home overall was not clean. Showers had mold and curtains were covered in dirt and grime. Extremely dusty and spiders were everywhere. WiFi didn’t work through my stay and was never fixed. Washing machine was molded and the bathrooms smelled like sewage. A/c didn’t work well but was only provided with one fan on one room. The home also didn’t include as many beds as the description and pictures show. Distance from holiday home and hotel was long and had really steep hills with no transportation provided making it a bit difficult. Landscaping around the home looked awful as it was tremendously overgrown and looked abandoned from first glance.
- Amanda (4/5): - There was still washing in the washing machine and dryer from the last stay.
- Harjodh (10/5): Loved my stay -

- Krystin (10/5): Super chill, friendly people and the best beach views! - I had a lovely, tranquil and fun time! The views were gorgeous all-around. The place feels cozy and welcoming with kind staff and friendly vibes. I went to the onsen at a nearby hotel, which was exactly what I needed! A great spot to relax and enjoy Shimoda. Will be back
- Inês (3/5): - Lack of communication.
No room keys.
Did not answer to my request of an extra bed or any message.
The place need some serious maintenance - the garden is completely abandoned.
- Sian (10/5): Very peaceful and relaxing! - I really enjoyed my stay here. The room was clean and comfortable, and the view of the ocean and Ebisu Island was beautiful. The wood deck was a perfect place to relax, and I also liked having the option to enjoy the nearby onsen and BBQ. The location feels peaceful and private, but still has everything you need close by. A very relaxing and memorable stay — I’d be happy to come back.
- Martin (10/5): This guesthouse is a hidden gem in a remote location, peaceful and surrounded by nature. The detache - This guesthouse is a hidden gem in a remote location, peaceful and surrounded by nature. The detached ocean view camping style room was a highlight, letting me fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up to a stunning sea view. Right in front of the guesthouse there is a small island, and you can even swim directly in the ocean which was such a rare and unforgettable experience.
The guesthouse itself is simple and cozy, and the nearby hotel provides access to excellent facilities including an onsen and BBQ. Being able to relax in the hot spring after a swim and enjoy a BBQ dinner made the stay complete.
The remote setting, the unique ocean view room, the chance to swim in front of the island, and the nearby hotel’s facilities all come together to make this a true 10 out of 10 experience. I would happily return.

- Holly (6/5): - Being close to the Ebisu Island and only a few minutes drive from Shimoda was perfect. The room was as advertised. They have a nice selection of boardgames to olay too. The parking being on a very steep hill and the narrow pathway to the accomodation was not easy. It would help a lot if they pruned the overgrown plants.
There is no aircon in the kitchen dining area which made it almost unusable except for early breakfast in the Summer heat. We were also unable to use the washing mashine advertised because it was always filled with Guesthouse laundry sheets. Under the bunkbeds were dirty (my child dropped something) and there were sharp plastic catches from un finished curtain rails that we bumped our heads on often.
- Xiaokang (9/5): -
- Riana (6/5): Beautiful with quirks - The location was so beautiful, little swimming spot down below. The staff were very nice, and the AC worked well to cool down our place. Overall we really enjoyed staying outside of Shimoda, but make sure you rent a car, it’s not walking friendly, even with the bus. Liked the option of using the hostel kitchen and showers, and hanging at the hotel onsen. Kind of the best of both worlds without paying the high room fees at the hotel. Wifi didn’t work the entire stay. Needed go to the hotel to do research for our trip. With there being no washroom nearby, that became a challenge. We ended up using the public bathroom at the bottom of the hill sometimes, the hotel bathroom to brush our teeth, and the hostel up the hill + 5 min steep walk. This needs to be clearly stated with clear instructions. Also the check in, no one seemed clear about who we were when we originally arrived at the hotel. Then the check in was rushed, not making sure things were in place like wifi. The communication between staff was challenged, found best luck through booking app but it takes a couple hours for them to respond Having a kettle in there and some small dishes or cups would be nice since it’s a trek to get anything. Also would be nice to have hooks outside in the entrance to hang towels and such to dry. I left my towel at the hostel to dry in the hostel, it was gone when I came back. I think tried to ask for one at the hotel and they wanted to charge me. There were bugs in the bed crawling. And the door doesn’t lock to our room / space. The place has great potential but lots that could improve.
- Saori (5/5): It was okay but it’s a bit expensive regarding what they offer - Cheap and facility is okay The room have very thin wall, I can hear the voice from the next room
- Maria (9/5): Overall it’s good! Propery is clean and complete with everything you need… staff is cool and speaks english so we were a - I like it because it’s clean.. it’s complete.. they also provide towels.. shampoo..etc.. they also have washing machine and dryer so you ca basically wash your dirty clothes… the staff speaks english too which is good😊. There is also a small island near the property where you can have a nice walk in the morning or late afternoon. 😊 there are some board games too. Nothing in particular.. maybe just the parking is a bit far from the property.. you have to walk uphill from the parking which is a bit tiring specially when you have heavy luggages. And they don’t have tv in the room…it’s okay though but it’s also nice if we can watch movie while relaxing on the bed after a day at the beach. 😊
- Yin (7/5): Good -
- Yin (8/5): Very good -
- Genelyn (9/5): It's a really good stay, good location,I like the place so cozy - I like everything! It's really good The toilet is at the main house
- Clinton (8/5): Very out of the way. No private bathroom as mentioned in the description. Toilets and showers are shared - The host was very nice and friendly. Communication was good. It was very clean. It was a long way away from anything. Restaurants, convenience store were all a good 10 min drive. Also the description on Booking.com said it had a private bathroom. It does not. It’s a shared bathroom with the host, the dorm room and the house next door which they also rent.
- Sajal (9/5): Superb -
- Sagar (8/5): Very good -
- Yan (10/5): A very welcoming environment that allow us to enjoy the tranquility of the area - I like the home design and the communal spaces! Nothing.
- Maithilee (3/5): Inconvenient location and service needs improvement - The rooftop terrace. Izu is beautiful but finding this remote property and accessing it with no clear instructions on Parking is a challenge. Even post parking your car, walking to the property is a long winded very narrow uphill back route. It’s a sweet guesthouse, but paper thin walls so even with a private room you can hear the guests in the next room. No amenities, no toothbrush, towels were arranged late, and no food coffee available. We received very little explanation of the guesthouse itself, in a very clumsy way. We had to go to the nearby Hiromi Spa for a bath, and for a good meal. It appeared to be the only option. Can’t complain for the price, but there is truly room for so much more improvement.
- Sha (10/5): pleasant stay and comfortable bed time with some cool conversations - properly maintaine it waa good for the money
- Maria (10/5): Cozy quiet and clean house ❤️ - The house is very cozy and clean. The view is great (you can see beautiful sunsets from the terrace) and it is a good place to relax. The manager (Mika) is awesome, she is all good vibes and tries hard you to be comfortable. The location is good (nice spots around and chill, quiet) if you have a car or a bike, while it can be tricky and less convenient if you depend on the bus (many options during the morning but not that many in the afternoon and none on the evening or night).
- Nikesh (9/5): Superb -
- Ketan (9/5): Superb -
- Michelle (8/5): Pleasant stay, and host. Just a lil inconvenient due to the facilities location, parking, - It’s a beautiful room with a nice view of the ocean. Room looks neat. Comfortable bed to sleep on. Glad there was a fridge in the room. The inconvenience:
1. Room is on the 2nd floor. Not really a big deal really.
2. Not having facilities like toilet, bathroom, kitchen right at the accommodation or right next to it. Have to walk around the neighbour’s house to get to the facilities.
3. Room cleanliness is ok. Not superb but ok.
- Melissa (8/5): Stunning views, great comfort, and remote. - The comfort of coming and going as we pleased, and great views of the ocean. Everything was clean, and AC worked very well. Shared bathrooms were clean.
We were able to get a few rides to and from the train stations, but taxis were hard to get from the guesthouse due to taxi shortage. There is a bus stop 10 min walking from the guesthouse, but do keep in mind that it comes only a few times a day. The guesthouse is hard to access without a car.
- Lam-po-tang (10/5): Thank you for the wonderful stay - a beach lover's dream - An extremely well-equipped and friendly guesthouse with nearby parking available. Beautiful location with a beach only minutes away on foot, and easy to access nearby beaches and towns with a car. Comfortable, clean and private with wonderful beds, great showers and kitchen space. Check-in and check-out were smooth and easy. We'd love to stay again and highly recommend NorthStar Guesthouse for anyone wanting to stay in Shimoda.
- Daniel (10/5): Amazing guesthouse for a stay in the Shimoda area - Amazing guesthouse for a stay in the Shimoda area. The hosts are great and very helpful, bedroom was very cosy and nice, as were the facilities including kitchen and bathrooms in the property. Highly recommend, the guesthouse is also located in a really nice and relaxed area right next to Ebisu Island. N/A
