Guest Reviews
- Alexey (10/5): -
- Julien (10/5): - Great experience. Amazing staff.
Comfortable and beautiful.
I strongly recommend.
- olivia (9/5): good place to stay and relax! - The whole decoration is really warm and comfortable. The hot water in the roof was considerate as it was relaxing to have a warm bath during trip.
- Lisa (10/5): One of the best hotel experiences we have had in 30+ years of traveling the world. - Nanaka Ota-san and his staff took incredibly good care of us. They were thoughtful and helpful with every aspect of our stay in Kyoto. The breakfasts were delicious. The decor was elegant and serene. The bed was incredibly comfortable. We loved having hojicha (roasted green tea) delivered to our room in the late afternoon, before dinner, following a day of sight-seeing or work. And an open-air bath in the evening before bed was supremely relaxing. Even the ceramics throughout the hotel were beautiful. One morning at breakfast I casually commented how much I admired the handmade ceramic tea cups (because I am learning to be a potter) and by the afternoon I had the name of the artist and the gallery where she showed her work. This is just one example of how Nanaka Ota-san and his staff consistently went beyond the expected to think about our comfort and enjoyment. Nothing.
- Valorie (10/5): - The staff members were so polite and eager to help us with absolutely everything. They made our stay so special. Helped us with dinner reservation and transport. The hotel itself is lovely and beautifully decorated. The rooms are comfortable and the rooftop terrace was such a grrat place to hang out. But again, the staff really made it terrific.

Everything was well designed with great attention to detail. Being in the hotel was a treat. can’t think of anything
- Yash (10/5): - Excellent room, location and everything else. Most of all, each member of the staff was extremely helpful and went out of their way to assist us. Will definitely be back.
- Alice (10/5): - I don’t know where to begin, the staff was incredibly helpful and attentive, the breakfast- the freshest and most tasteful food, location is top notch. I would recommend to anyone Nothing

- Po Yi (10/5): -
- Yerzhan (9/5): Warm, open, and great hotel personnel - Almost everything It was too cold in the bathroom, mainly because of the chilly weather in Kyoto during the period of stay

- Jeffrey (10/5): Modern Japanese Hotel with Traditional Vibe, Great Location and Exceptional Staff. - Booked this luxury 'micro' hotel to help celebrate my wife's 50th birthday in Japan. Originally planned for two nights, our overvall experience was so above expectations we cancelled the other hotel in Osaka and enjoyed a total of five nights at Higashiyama Shikikaboku.
Higashiyama Shikikaboku is a hidden treasure in what seems like an endless sea of hotels in Kyoto. It really depends on what you are looking for. In our case, the staff set the bar high at this hotel. With advance request, they helped welcome us with a stunning floral arrangement in our room the first night - and provided an extraordinary surprise for a few of our remaining night which was truly above and beyond what we could have asked for. So be prepared for the staff to go out of their way to ensure guests feel welcomed and supported each day whether it's directions, food recommendations or just friendly unhurried conversation.
The open air onsen on the near the top floor provided a private but satisfying opportunity to end our long day of walking in Kyoto. Floor above that is a roof top patio with 360 degree view to catch the sunset with a cocktail in hand.
We will definitely be coming here on our next trip to Japan! Thank you Higashiyama Shikikaboku for help making our stay in Kyoto amazing.

- Chloe (10/5): Greatly recommend, we hope to stay again - The staff was exceptional, incredibly attentive and helpful. The location was perfect, close to the subway and walking distance to so much. The facilities (room) and baths were clean, well equipped, and incredibly comfortable. Nothing
- Jen (10/5): - The staff here is so lovely! They will go above and beyond to make sure your stay is absolutely perfect.

- zeynep (10/5): Best stay in Japan - Loved Absolutely everything, definitely the best hotel i’ve stayed at in Japan, from staff to room to facilities to authenticity to culture to service everything was top tier and exceptional, if anything i will be back to Kyoto to stay here again. Nothing

- Brina (10/5): Perfect blend of luxury and traditional Japanese accommodations - This was a very special hotel with an incredibly welcoming staff. It offered a perfect blend of luxury and traditional Japanese accommodations. We loved the comfortable rooms, the great location, the bento-style breakfasts, and the outdoor onsen on the top floor. The concierge was extremely helpful in setting up some dinner reservations and arranging a great half day private tour of Kyoto. Absolutely perfection. We liked everything.
- Paul (9/5): A great boutique hotel in Kyoto - Modern and aesthetic. Expensive

- Jordan (10/5): A perfect blend of luxury, warmth and unforgettable hospitality—Higashiyama Shikikaboku is our favorite place in Kyoto! - Higashiyama Shikikaboku is truly a gem in Kyoto. This was our second stay, and if we could come back annually, we absolutely would. The property is gorgeous—a boutique hotel with high-end finishes, thoughtful amenities and a luxurious vibe.
What sets this hotel apart is the staff. Their hospitality is exceptional, and they consistently go out of their way to ensure guests feel welcomed and cared for. During my husband’s birthday trip, they provided wonderful recommendations for restaurants and experiences and even surprised Patrick with special touches that made the day unforgettable.
The open-air bath is incredible—perfect after exploring Kyoto and its neighboring sights. Transportation is effortless as well, with both the subway and a bus stop located right outside the door. We also love the delicious and healthy breakfast!
Our room was spacious, beautifully designed and equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The combination of impeccable staff, ideal location and true luxury keeps us returning to Higashiyama Shikikaboku. We can’t wait for the day we get to come back for our third visit. We love everything - it is our favorite place in Kyoto!
- Ineke (10/5): A small luxury hideaway close to Kyoto’s highlights - The people made this place. They have such a genuine friendliness and wish to take good care of you, which goes further than most other hotels. Nothing
- sofia (10/5): Adoramos - Localização , ambiente e pormenores
- ariyatanaporn (10/5): - This is one of the best hotel we’ve been , the staffs are super nice and the bed is extremely cozy :) we also love the open air bathtub specially it is perfect at this time of the year thank you so much we had a really great stay ✨❤️

- FEDOR (10/5): - Wonderful staff that helped us in drastical situation, and provided such help and level of hospitality that can be seen only in Japan
Beds in hotel is so good that is quite a challenge to get from it morning:) And location is perfect for Kyoto trip when you come there for your first times
- Pierre (8/5): - Extremely pleasant staff - really here to help and doing their best 24/7 Very nice and minimalist property so very small with limited common areas. Location is perfect and the breakfast super tasty (local vegetables)

- penelope (10/5): -
- Carlotta (10/5): Consigliato, camera molto bella. Staff gentilissimo - Staff eccezionale, hotel con arredo molto curato nei dettagli. Camera spaziosa e pulitissima. Ottima posizione Wi-Fi non perfettamente funzionante in alcuni punti della camera
- John (10/5): Wonderful! - The most hospitable hotel I've ever visited, with beautiful facilities and excellent amenities
The rooftop baths are wonderful; we used them every night!
- Isabelle (10/5): -
- Michael (10/5): Our stay was absolutely lovely from start to finish. - The staff hospitality was wonderful, they were kind and attentive. The breakfast service was terrific with lovely variety and very well prepared. It would be nice to have a lighted cosmetic mirror as the lighting in the bathrooms is a bit challenging. And the design of the rooms doesn't allow one to put clothing away in drawers, so also challenging for a long stay.
- Joanna (10/5): Perfect in every way! - Our welcome was exceptional. The staff came out into the street to greet us. We had a lovely welcome tea and checked in. The room was lovely and the design elements are very well thought out. The bedding is exceptionally comfortable and made me fall asleep instantly. I would like to mention specially the director and the front desk staff who were extremely helpful for a personal matter and who facilitated my task. The staff is extremely warm and to be honest even though I stayed a single night it felt like being « home ». Thank you 🙏🏼

- Matt (9/5): -
- YI-CHING (10/5): - スタッフの対応が良い。清潔感あり。 特に無し。
- Rosemary (10/5): Welcoming and relaxing - Beautiful hotel, wonderful staff and luxuriously soft beds. I arrived early in the morning and the staff happily stored my suitcase so I could go sightseeing. When I returned my suitcase was already in my room, check in was smooth and I felt very welcome. My room was beautiful, although it overlooked the road, I could not hear a sound. Supersoft room pyjamas, socks and flipflops were provided. The rooftop bath was incredible, I used it in the evening, after a day of hiking. Also a great location if you are taking the metro, a very short walk and easy with a suitcase. nothing
- Alberto (7/5): Nice but too expensive - Clean and nice Hotel Nice but too expensive
- Claudio (10/5): Un piccolo paradiso - Hotel di estremo fascino, personale molto gentile e disponibile Tutto bello, nessun neo.
- Savage (10/5): - Perfect hotel. The hotel itself is located near the main temple complex of Kyoto and close to all the restraunts and other touristy things. The staff are incredibly friendly and always greet you with a smile when leaving or coming back. The room was incredible with a good size bath and a nice zen garden on the balcony. It even comes with a mini fridge full of complementary drinks which is restocked when your room is cleaned. Only negative is how they only rate themselves as a 3 star hotel on google. Definetly fitting of a 4-5 star rating
- Dejan (9/5): -
- Suzanne (10/5): Exceptional experience. If you want the perfect hotel in Kyoto, this is it. - Fantastic experience. Everything was exceptional and the staff outstanding. Warm, friendly and professional. Flawless. Everything was perfect.
- Tan (8/5): Very good - Excellent service and attention.
Good dining recommendations. Nil
- Tammy (10/5): Wonderful staff, great location, impeccable design and so clean -
- Morten (10/5): Fantastic location, interior, service and comfert. Very comfy beds, but most of all - the staff and - Fantastic location, interior, service and comfert. Very comfy beds, but most of all - the staff and the team was amazing. Very helpful and nice. It's a small hotel, so you really feel "seen" by the staff. Could not have asked for more.
- Danny (10/5): An amazing hotel in a great location in Kyoto with incredible staff! - Clean, amazing staff, great location, a unique experience. Salad for breakfast but that is only cause of personal preference.
- Shelley (10/5): Higashiyama Shikikaboku delivered an impeccable blend of traditional Japanese hospitality and modern comfort that exceed - The staff at Higashiyama Shikikaboku were absolutely exceptional - their attentiveness and genuine kindness made our stay truly memorable. Every morning we looked forward to the delicious breakfasts, and we were so grateful that they could accommodate our specific dietary requirements without any fuss. What impressed us most was how thoughtfully every detail was curated, from the warm welcome during check-in to the carefully selected amenities in our room, the evening drinks service, and especially the serene open-air bath experience. The traditional architecture and peaceful atmosphere in the Higashiyama district created the perfect authentic Kyoto experience. Honestly, it's difficult to find any significant faults. If anything, we wished our three-night stay could have been longer to fully savor this exceptional experience.
- Yen (10/5): Comfortable luxury - From start to finish, everything was perfect. By far the best room and property I’ve stayed in Japan. The staff were amazingly kind (shout out to Nana!) and we loved everything! Nothing!
- Nelly (9/5): Superb -
- Luis (10/5): Just AMAZING - We had an amazing stay at this hotel. The staff members were extremely amazing and they made our trip perhaps the best trip ever. Please send our extreme gratification to the staff members. Beautiful hotel and amazing food as well. There wasn’t a single thing I didn’t like
- Katherine (9/5): Boutique hotel that aims to please mixture of Japanese and western comforts beautiful aesthetic. - The location and staff helpfulness- also the open air onsen was wonderful. Three rooms but no usable drawers ok for a couple of nights but wouldn’t be comfortable for longer stay
- Loredana (9/5): Superb -

- Rick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ignacio (9/5): Superb -
- Dallas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Victor (7/5): Nice 3 star hotel in a convenient location - The location of this hotel is absolutely perfect! It is right next to an underground station and it's walking distance from Gion and a bunch of other temples. On top of that it's situated in really nice area. That makes it great for exploring around and shopping for gifts.
The hotel has a very Japanese feel, which contributes to the overall positive cultural experience in Kyoto.
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. In booking.com this hotel is listed as 5 star, and it's priced as such, but if you cross check tripadvisor and Google, you can find out its actually 3 star! For a 3 star hotel it's amazing, for 5 star, it doesn't really match expectations in terms of amenities, size and services.
The biggest issue we had is that beds were not comfortable, after 5 nights there both me and my partner had back ache.
Other than that, the room is really small, we barely fit ourselves and our luggage.
- Panagiotis (8/5): Very good -
- Jurrien (10/5): By far the best hotel I have ever stayed in. It deserves 6 or 7 stars! - This is by far the best city hotel I have ever stayed in in my life, and that means a lot since I’m an airline Pilot/Captain since 2010.
Interior design - the hotel has a beautiful tranquil traditional Japanese style interior with the dining/breakfast area on the ground floor and the reception area on the first floor. The check-in process is private and unique with welcome drinks, hot towels and even a handwritten welcome note in the room including your name.
The room is beautiful with similar styling, comfortable beds and a tatami room to eat/drink/relax. The bathroom is fully equipped with high end finishes and all amenities your can think of, plus the always enjoyable Japanese toilet!
On the top floor of the hotel is the semi outdoor Spa/Onsen area, where you can enjoy 45 mins of quality time with views of Kyoto’s Gion district.
Staff and service - the hotel staff and their hospitality was of the highest level I have ever experienced. They were extremely helpful throughout the entire stay. From gathering dining options in Kyoto and arranging reservations, to assisting with tickets for Osaka’s Nintendo World, to advising on things to do throughout the area, how to get there and get the best experiences! Every evening/night when we arrived back from a day out, the staff asked at what time we would want our breakfast to be served the next morning so they could prepare it accordingly! They set a standard that every hotel around the world should take notes from!
The breakfast was served fresh every morning by the chef, consisting of a mixed variety of healthy fresh vegetables, salmon or chicken, boiled eggs, fresh juice, a selection of bread and Japanese tea.
The location is perfect next to Kyoto’s Gion district with all sightseeing and dining at walking distance. There’s multiple subway stations at walking distance and a bike rental shop nearby. The breakfast was almost perfect but could be a little bit less focused on vegetables, with more bread/pastries/oatmeal (carbs) options.
- Zhirong (10/5): Perfect hotel and top service - Everything is so perfect! The spotless room and rooftop spa are amazing
- Saeed (10/5): A perfect hotel for the perfect Kyoto experience - Everything was perfect here and they were extremely thoughtful and helpful Nothing it was perfect
- Hamad (8/5): Very good -
- Colette (10/5): Ideal for a short stay in Kyoto, home from home. - Perfect location and exceptional staff and service. I liked everything
- Salih (7/5): Good -
- Alec (9/5): Superb -
- Rosie (8/5): Lovely place but given main road noise and cost I wouldn’t stay again personally - It’s a beautiful property with great private semi outdoor bath, all high end fittings and amenities, lovely tea and coffee supplied. It’s on a busy main road and room fronted onto road with bare cement balcony…noisy at night. Staff extremely helpful and attentive but perhaps a bit too much so?? Some seemed newer and a bit nervous…no one told us about the bar and it never seemed open…
- Elif (10/5): Exceptional - The staff were amazing! Thank you so much for a kind reception. The breakfast was exactly what we needed after not feeling so great after being in Japan for a week or so. Very grateful for my stay here I wish we booked it for the majority of our Kyoto stay as we chose to stay in two different areas.
- Emma (10/5): Lovely Ryokan-style boutique hotel. - The baths were sublime after a day of sightseeing. The most comfortable beds I’ve ever slept on in a hotel! The staff was extremely helpful and courteous.
It’s located a few steps from the subway. And The Green Door coffee around the corner was a great way to start the day. N/a
- Kristy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yuan (7/5): Good -
- Makoto (8/5): Great place, definitively stay again - Location and Staff The room was bit small and the switch for the toilet was awkward.
