Guest Reviews
- Sorina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shaun (8/5): Clean, comfortable, surprisingly quiet, and very central. - This location looks a bit drab and congested. But actually it's a friendly neighbourhood which just happens to be squashed in between the hills of this bustling town. Easily accessible, and only a few hundred metres from the old town; with it's expensive boutiques and eateries. A little further down the slope are the fort, the port and the seaside. Without paying a fortune you couldn't wish to be closer to all the best features of San Remo.
Google gave me a bit of a bum steer, so I lugged my bags through the busy, narrow cobblestoned alleys of the old town: down a hill and then back up. But there's a much easier, level route from both the bus and train stations, which takes you through a road tunnel on Via Francia, and pops out right near the apartment.
Arriving from the west, it was also much easier (and way more scenic) to catch a local bus from Ventimiglia Station; just across the border from France. The bus depot is a bit closer to the apartment, and the train station has a kilometre long tunnel from the ticket office to the platforms!
The central produce market is a few doors down from the apartment, and has a bewildering array of hand made smallgoods etc. Plus a great weekly clothes market outside.
The most beautiful of San Remo's many churches can just be glimpsed (and heard) from the bathroom window. Not that you'll spend all day looking from there, but it is crucial for getting your bearings, before hiking up that hill to see the church and it's fabulous view. Stairs begin from the old town just opposite the apartment, and wind ever upwards. A perfect spot to start if you are sight-seeing, because you can get a good idea of the rest of the town's layout below.
Something fairly unique to this area is that the original railway track follows the shore for a couple of dozen kilometres. Not an issue for me, but this place has some giant wardrobes. Some could be sublet!
I can't imagine any visitor getting full use of them, and the massive dresser in the dining room would be better used for space to put a couch. Otherwise there is no real living room. With the possibility of 4 guests, that would be a much better arrangement.
