Guest Reviews
- Paul (1/5): DO NOT BOOK THIS PROPERTY!! - Nothing - it was a dump. Do not stay here. BE WARNED - do not book this property as it is not as advertised. Although it has an amazing view, it is a terrible property. It is advertised as a two-bedroom house, but is a dirty run-down one-bedroom shack in a very isolated location. Firstly it is incredibly difficult to find, and then if you do find it you then have the pleasure of a two minute trek through the jungle on a broken path that goes up and down a hill (impossible for suitcases) and then you get to an absolute dump of a property. It is dirty and smelly and very old and unclean. The property was so bad that we didn’t even stay there as my family felt unsafe and the property was so disgusting. I can’t imagine someone trying to find it late at night and have to walk though a dark jungle with there suitcases. We cancelled our booking and the host declined the refund and Booking.com haven’t been very helpful either in getting our money back
- Anna (1/5): THE WORST PLACE. DONT GO HERE!!!!!! - We ended up leaving the accommodation due to safety and sanity concerns. The place was very dirty (with dead spiders, dust, etc.), which we could have tolerated, but the front door couldn’t lock, and when we tried to contact the host, she didn’t respond. We received a message at 3 a.m., but it didn’t address the issue with the lock. It was extremely unsafe to sleep in an isolated place without a secure door.
The property is so high up and accessible only via narrow paths that you can’t bring your suitcases. We received a message the night before from our host telling us to leave our suitcases in our car, but we were traveling by train and were already in the area when we got this information. It’s also a strenuous uphill hike to the house.
The kitchen stove didn’t work, and using the microwave or other appliances caused the electricity to cut out in the entire house. There were no bedsheets, only dirty towels with stains. There was no air conditioning in the bedroom, so we had to sleep on mattresses in the living room. Additionally, there was no hot water.
The communication with the host was the worst part. She responded with “my house is not a hotel” and refused to offer a refund for even a single night. She didn’t offer to fix the lock or address any other issues. We have stayed in dirty hostels around the world, and this was still the worst experience. We were very disappointed as we had been looking forward to experiencing beautiful Shimoda. This experience ruined our trip, and we had to return to Tokyo. It was an unfortunate trip, made even worse by the very rude host. :(
- Laura (7/5): Good for family time, away from main facilities. - Great view. Space for family. Traditional features. Private. Hard to find ( google maps sent us to wrong place) I think the owner tried to explain this, but it was in Japanese with some kanji I couldn’t read. Was hard to get to with our luggage, had to go up a slope or lots of steps, then along a slippery, rocky, thin path with steps. We could manage but would be hard for some people, and our suitcase wheels got ruined. There were 2 TVs but neither were usable. Some windows had no coverings so the light woke us up very early.
- Craig (8/5): Sazanami Review - The view is spectacular of Shimoda bay. The house was clean and comfortable. The stay was absolutely fun, beautiful and we would stay there again for sure 👍 It was windy and a couple of windows rattled all night which wasn't giving us a good sleep ❗
We got eaten by mosquitoes so please fix where they were coming from 🙏
A recommendation could added about not being close to a supermarket so shopping first might be a good idea, especially if you don't have a car like us.
- Amit (10/5): Highly recommended - It is a great house to stay, but it was a little bit tough to find out the location. Highly recommended for group stay.
