Guest Reviews
- Charles (10/5): -
- Phil (8/5): - The observatory
- Elaine (8/5): Enjoyable stay, lovely location, comfortable bedroom. - Room was 1st class, lovely bathroom. Location was perfect for travelling to other areas. Being asked every morning what time we would be down for breakfast and were we having dinner and if so, what time. As this was a chill out vacation, we don't like getting up for a specific time nor ensuring we are back at the hotel to have an early dinner.
- Denise (8/5): -
- Kelly (10/5): Allways the best service - A1 as allways N/a
- Ken (10/5): Brilliant and will definitely return but to stay longer - Breakfast and dinner excellent all made with locally sourced high quality products.
Staff all excellent in particular one of the staff who unfortunately didn’t get her name but has a little girl who is 5. Friendly efficient a real asset. Nothing
- Laura (10/5): - Accessible room with walk in shower. Room was lovely and cosy. Lovely garden. Many choices for breakfast and the dinner menu was fantastic. We really enjoyed our food. Nothing
- Rhoda (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The views on our walk were spectacular. The staff were so friendly and helpful. Definitely - Large room and bathroom. A separate little ‘cottage’ ideal for taking the dog. A dog welcome pack and towel provided. Very clean and accessible. Steps and ramp to the room.
Lovely walks around the area and central for visiting attractions. Nothing
- Tracey (7/5): Lovely stay - Friendliness of staff and eco ethos. Car park awkward to get out on motorbike
- William (9/5): A lovely stay in beautiful countryside. - We had a lovely stay in one of the lodges at Battlesteads. All the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and made us and our dog feel welcome. The food (breakfast and dinner) was excellent and several real ales are available on draft. There are lots of nice walks in the surrounding countryside and an excellent walking guide leaflet is available. The lodge we stayed in was massively overheated when we arrived, probably because a previous guest had turned the heating way up and the space is so well insulated it took a day to cool down to a comfortable temperature -- but not the fault of the hotel!
- Keith (10/5): - Great location for travelling around Northumberland
- Lucy (10/5): Fabulous. Thank you 😊 - Lovely breakfast. Lovely staff. Great space to sit outside. Great location. Nothing i can think of.
- Bentley (9/5): Excellent place to stay, brilliant food. We also did the Dark Sky Observatory which was fantastic. - Breakfast and dinner was excellent, food was very good, staff were really friendly. Very cosy and welcoming place to stay.
- Sophie (7/5): -
- Linda (6/5): Disappointing 😞 - We stayed here some years ago, it was amazing and thats why we returned, lots has changed since our first visit and sadly not for the better The bedroom was incredibly hot, struggled to sleep
Mattress very uncomfortable
Menu in the restaurant was limited and some things were already unavailable even at 7.30pm
The food was average
We had to ask if we could have some sugar 3 times at breakfast
There was dog poo on the grass in the garden area
- Deborah (7/5): Would have enjoyed it better if staff were more friendly - The hotel was very nice, gardens could be tidier The hotel and lodges were okay, dining area had no character
- John (9/5): -
- Rhys (9/5): Nice hotel in a beautiful location - Fabulous location. Clean comfortable room. Easy to park. Friendly staff More vegetarian options
Parmesan is not vegetarian
- Barbara (8/5): Friendly hotel in brilliant dark skies location - Fantastic dark sky location, friendly sraff, commitment to sustainability and environment. Nice selection of beers and great to have the observatory. Nothing really
- Lynne (10/5): -
- Anthony (9/5): - Everything Road noise from traffic outside the bedroom window
- Ann (8/5): Very pleasant overnight stop - Clean good evening meal near nice walks along the Tyne. Good garden
- susan (8/5): - We have been several times very pleasant place Food not up to its previous standard
- Hannah (9/5): - Bed was very comfy and room was clean, there was a dinner for our dog in the room. Dinner for us was delicious. Bar area cosy and very dog friendly. Would stay again
- roger (10/5): Superb in every Way. - Superb stay in every way. The room was huge with an enormous bathroom with jacuzzi bath a v large shower. Lots of space and great little extras like tray for shoes, coat hooks, home made cookies with complimentary coffee & teas and selection of fruit in fridge. outdoor wash point for dogs, boots etc and safe cycle storage. Evening meal was excellent and staff couldn't have done more. highly recommend. Nothing.
- Claudia (9/5): Nice country inn - Very nice country inn with added accommodation of various types, including a terrace of five chalets. These were great: very spacious rooms and bathrooms, well equipped, very warm, comfy extra large bed, plenty of seating, and a desk. The inn serves food, dinners were of very high quality. Staff were fantastic.
There is a little observatory in the garden, with a 14" Schmidt-Cassegrain Meade, and guests can book to be shown the basics of the night sky.
There are many nice walks in the area as well as good cycling on rural lanes if one doesn't mind plenty of hills. Slightly on the expensive side for what it is.
- Dicker (4/5): Shame about the food, won't return. - The breakfast was poor. Greek yoghurt , it was not and there eggs royale was covered with mock hollandaise sauce, which wase fowl. Clearly scrimping on quality of food. The above.
- Ross (10/5): - Food was amazing
- michael (10/5): We will be back again - Everything Everything
- Thomas (9/5): -
- Paul (8/5): Great value with super location for exploring - Location, staff and overall value Nothing
- Whittam (8/5): - Good breakfast
- Henry (10/5): - The frienfliness of the steff N/A
- Lesa (7/5): - Beautiful building at the edge of a small village.
Family room had a large double bed and to armchair beds. Suitable for teenagers.
Good facilities in the room, special extras of a fruit bowl, homemade biscuits on the tea try. Room 9 felt like from the minute we arrived to leaving sounded like we had a washing machine on spin the full the full time. It was so loud it never let up!!
- Rowbotham (8/5): Excellent value for money. The lodge was beautiful and big - Lovely spacious accommodation The generator outside the bedroom was extremely loud
- Giorgia (8/5): -
- ashish (10/5): -

- Jackson (9/5): - Spotlessly clean, lovely big family room and very comfy bed.
Cozy pub friendly staff. Receptionist on arrival not the most welcoming.
- Martin (10/5): Highly recommended - would definitely stay again - Lovely room, well stocked fridge, great bathroom, excellent breakfasts and evening meals. Lovely staff and location. Nothing much - Some of the carpets in the hallways were a little tired.

- Anthony (9/5): -
- DAVID (9/5): -
- DAVID (9/5): -
- Darron (8/5): Really lovely night away with comfortable room in lovely village location with excellent food - Breakfast and dinner were lovely. Room comfortable with some nice little extras e.g the jar of biscuits and some dark towels for those of us who wear make up.
Comfortable bed Would have preferred some decent French wines on the wine list but that’s entirely a personal preference.
- Ray (10/5): -
- Knox (7/5): -
- Amanda (9/5): Lovely friendly atmosphere, fantastic food and comfortable rooms. - Comfortable room, fabulous evening meal and superb breakfast. Staff were friendly and efficient. We had never taken our dog with us to a hotel before and found the hotel & staff to be very dog friendly which made our stay so much easier than anticipated. We would definitely love to stay here again. Nothing

- John (10/5): Overall I really enjoyed my stay and would stay there again if the opportunity arose. - The staff were all really helpful and friendly. I was impressed by the many environment-friendly features of the hotel. The food (I had two breakfasts and one evening meal) was excellent. My only slight criticism was the room decor - it was showing it's age a little, for example with some of the wallpaper starting to peel.
- Allan (10/5): -
- Martin (10/5): lovely stay in a great family room. - Delicious breakfast. Very hard working staff. Lovely location. Well organised
- Lorraine (10/5): -
- PAUL (10/5): OVERALL EXCELLENT - AMPLE PARKING FOR RECOVERY TRUCK - HOTEL WAS VERY CLEAN AND WELL PRESENTED - THE EVENING MEAL IN RESTAURANT WAS WELL PRESENTED AND TASTED AMAZING : ) STAFF WERE POLITE AND FREIENDLY - BED WAS SUPER COMFY. THEY DIDNT START SERVING BREAKFAST UNTIL 7.30 AM WHICH WAS NOT GOOD FOR ME AS I HAD A LONG DRIVE AHEAD UP TO SCOTLAND AND NEEDED TO BE ON THE ROAD BY 6,30
- Gillian (7/5): We had a lovely stay and visited Alnwick castle and also the seaside town Amble. - Food was excellent both at breakfast and dinner. The staff were friendly but hard to find on occasions.
Bar was often unstaffed and on a couple of occasions we waited quite a while for someone to turn up to serve us. The village of Wark is quite isolated there is a pub, a shop and a coffee shop that closes at 3.30. When we arrived mid afternoon all we could get to eat was coffee and cake as the cafe was closing and there were no staff around in the restaurant.
- Hayley (10/5): - Quiet, comfortable, and in a great location.
Really likes the garden
- Fiona (6/5): - Breakfast
- Adam (9/5): -
- Rebecca (10/5): Really happy to come, look forward to coming again. - The ethos of sustainability, clever ideas well done.
- Rebecca (6/5): -
- john derek (10/5): - Everything was lovely as usual ,Lovely room great food,Friendly staff.Very dog friendly.
- David (9/5): An excellent hotel, perfect for stargazing in the Northumberland Dark Skies - The hotel was perfect for our visit to the dark sky observatory, which was a two minute walk from our room.
The room was warm, clean and comfortable.
There was on site parking, which was great.
I was impressed by the large solar array that helped to provide sustainable electricity to the observatory and hotel.
All of the staff were amazingly helpful
We ate at the restaurant both nights and also had the breakfast. Both of which were fantastic. The only minor comment I have is there was an unpleasant smell in the en suite bathroom.
- Jacqueline (9/5): great place to stay -
- Edward (8/5): -
- Sally (8/5): -
- Rachel (9/5): A lovely getaway within a quiet village - The property was beautiful and full of character. Bar and restaurant area were lovely. Room was also really lovely! Comfy bed, great shower! Food was delicious. Staff were very friendly and overall our stay was great. Next time I would love to book onto an event at the observatory!
- Lee (8/5): Lovely overnight stay- will stay again - The room and the bathroom were spot on no issues whatsoever very clean, and it had everything that was needed, check in staff were very friendly as well as the staff at the bar, evening meal was excellent! Breakfast was lukewarm and mediocre
- James (10/5): Excellent place - great restaurant and staff - Hidden gem - should have booked and stayed for longer. Excellent restaurant specifically. None
- Amy (10/5): Our 5th time saying, says it all. Some of the best food we have ever had. - Everything. Room, food, staff all exceptional N/A
- Federico Riccardo (10/5): Hotel sul Vallo di Adriano - Hotel accogliente. Parcheggio gratuito. Camera spaziosa. Ottima colazione e buon ristorante. Il bagno è un po' antiquato ma funzionale
- Brett (10/5): Amazing - Room was amazing. Upgraded to a lodge and the room was huge, nice and warm too Nothing
- Dan (9/5): Great for a getaway with a difference - Very friendly and attentive staff. Great menu and a stunning location for stargazing. Tea tray in room was very good and lived the homemade complimentary biscuits The bathroom was a little bit dated I felt. Didn't like the shower curtain set up.
- Terry (10/5): Enjoying a pint of beer in the bar in front of a roaring fire - super - Fabulously friendly and relaxed
- Daniel (10/5): Northumberland Stopover - Very spacious lodge. Nice little touches such as leaving out hot chocolate mugs with biscuits for the kids. Fresh fruit, milk and water in the fridge.
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Karen (10/5): A really enjoyable stay - The property was in a beautiful location and the room / food / staff/ facilities were excellent
- Sarah (9/5): - All the little touches, enormous comfortable room and bathroom, lovely food in the pub Nothing
- Ann (9/5): A welcoming Hotel with lovely staff and facilities. - Very friendly reception, bar and waiting staff. Visiting for a Dark Skies event and decided to stay overnight. The evening meal in the restaurant was superb as was the breakfast. Our room was very comfortable with a lovely selection of beverages and fruit. Would definitely stay again even if visiting the area. Car parking was on site and very handy to have. Nothing
- LORRAINE (9/5): Northumberland Observatory Experience - We stayed in one of the lodges which was very large and very nice. Massive bathroom. We also did the observatory experience which was on site and really informative. Food was very good too. Initially we were in a room in the actual pub which I did not like. Very small room and not worth the money. Luckily though they were able to move us.
- stuart (8/5): -
- Lynn (10/5): We love staying here - it feels homely and warm. - Very comfortable welcoming hotel. Excellent food for dinner and breakfast Nothing
- Karen (8/5): - Very friendly staff and very dog friendly facilities. Nice touches in the room (dog treats/fruit etc). A bath is a lovely option to have rather than just a shower. I like the fact thst there are dvds to borrow too. Good choice at breakfast and lovely food with a good chef and kitchen team. Great value for money. Very comfy room and this is our 2nd stay. We will definitely be back. Being in Room 11 it is very close to the main road and although not a busy road, cars can pass at speed and noisily!
- Mel (8/5): Great food - Lovely food, friendly staff.
- Garry (9/5): Good hotel, helpful staff - Lovely hotel with nice restaurant
Friendly staff Nothing
- B3APS (8/5): - I'm unable to rate the breakfast, as I needed to leave so early, but they provided me witha breakfast "goodie bag".
