- Fabrizio (9/5): Viaggio Giovane Coppia - La struttura è bellissima.
- Zehra (10/5): - The garden, the onsen inside and outside was just a dream...the staff was super kind and helpfy. I forgot my backpack at shinkansen, the gentleman at the reception called the trainline for me and the following day l just got my bag back. Couldn't ask for more. The smoking room doesn't have a proper ventilation and the smell just spreads around. That was the only negative thing l could say.

- Yi (10/5): A dreamy holiday in the 1300 year old Japanese onsen Ryokan - It’s the traditional Japanese onsen Ryokan that we love. The 400 year old trees, the garden and the stones are all reminiscent of the onsen when it was first opened 1300 years ago. N/A

- Lisa (8/5): A delightful slice of traditional Japanese hospitality - A lovely, relaxing slice of history. We were looked after really well. The staff are lovely and very happy to help us. We had a private onsen which was divine. We really enjoyed the break from the hustle and bustle of busier areas in Japan. The breakfast was a little bit too traditional for our palate but it was served beautifully and really lovely experience.

- James (10/5): - Staff were very courteous and helpful. Shuttle bus made access convenient. Very impressed with onsen facilities. The history associated with this accommodation is fascinating. Great value for money. Nothing.
- Timothy Mason (8/5): Great place to stay which is full of history - Great Onsen. Lovely Garden. Local restaurants in the town.
- Marie-helene (9/5): -
- Colby (9/5): Great stay, just pricey. -
- Erik (10/5): Historically fascinating and a much quieter onsen hotel than other popular destinations - Room was great, we were surprised at the quality of the food on some nights, there was a lot to offer. The whole hotel has so much history is fascinating. The onsen baths were really good and when I went it was very quiet, much better than the busy ones in the cities. Would absolutely go back.

- Maria Vittoria (9/5): Bellissimo - Struttura storica, incantevole e accogliente. Vasche molto belle, servizio e personale meravigliosi.

- Snorre (9/5): - Sehr schöne traditionelle Einrichtung im ganzen Hotel.
sehr exotisches Essen.

- Young (10/5): Amazing experience at a ryokan with such rich history. - Amazing experience with rich history. Exceptional views of the interior garden. Enjoyed the onsen, especially the outdoor onsen. Food was excellent, and the Staff were friendly and courteous. We very much enjoyed our stay. Only issue was that it was difficult to get to the property with public transportation. Most likely need a taxi to get to and from the station.
- John (9/5): An exceptional place to stay, beautiful, peaceful, and authentic - a superb traditional hotel.
The garden~ koi ponds, mossy banks, ancient trees, huge dragonflies- was exceptional.
Quiet, peaceful, fascinating. Repairs to the building (late 2025) meant scaffolding around parts of the beautiful building.
and the repairs closed the kitchen facilities.
But those were necessary and understandable.

- Marius (10/5): -
- Amy (9/5): Traditional onsen, lovely landscaping and staff - Lovely onsen and central garden, very pleasant spacious room, good kaiseki dinner, super friendly staff, useful shuttle to Kagaonsen station. 10am checkout made us rush breakfast; building is huge and felt a bit under used when we were there, which is sad.
- Roy (8/5): Very good -
- Dawn (7/5): Peaceful gardens, outdoor onsen is wonderful with the cold plunge a bonus! Love the history of Hoshi - Beautiful and peaceful outdoor onsen with indoor onsen and cold plunge. Beautiful gardens with wonderful birds and very friendly staff at this historical ryokan. We enjoyed the included dinner and breakfast and the futons are very comfortable. Easy shuttle pickup at the train station with large shopping facility with food next to pickup location. The ryokan does show some signs of wear but this did not impact our visit at all. The dining area feels more like a banquet hall but we enjoyed the dinner and breakfast.
- Dms (6/5): Pleasant -
- Michael (9/5): Superb -
- Gaia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (7/5): Good stay at houshi - Pros: historical significance, beautiful decor in the common areas of the ryokan. Staff was hospitable. Large rooms. Cons: a relatively big ryokan so the onsen can get crowded (although we were there during off peak season). Dining area was in a partition in a big hall, quite austere. Breakfast was good, though had better at other ryokans. The room did not have any bath amenities other than toothbrushes, not even towels to dry your hands with. Got a set of bath and hand towels to use at the onsen.
Additional note: when you book on Booking.com, make sure you select the option that states half board with breakfast if you want dinner and breakfast. I had thought all ryokans with onsens come with dinner, and made the mistake of selecting only breakfast so missed the dinner.
- Charlotte (10/5): Wonderful traditional Japanese inn - Lovely staff, great facilities, beautiful garden, in-house onsen Could do with a fresh coat of paint
- Ingrid (8/5): Very good -
- Julia (10/5): A magical stay - Beautiful garden and toasty hot bath! The bar was closed
- Justin (9/5): One of a kind stay; an historic piece of Japan itself - What an experience! So glad we went. Great service, amazing osen, incredible meals, beautiful grounds. Next time we'll do 2 nights instead of just one.
Also–very close to a special Buddhist temple, also as old as Hoshi (1,300 years) dedicated to Guan Yin/Kanon, called Natadera Temple.
Overall very special. Some aspects of the Ryokan felt a bit outdated, such as the hallway carpeting. Not 'traditional' or 'historic' the way so much of the space feels, but 'ready to be replaced'.
The area that Hoshi is located in feels a bit of a hodge-podge...some of it feels really industrial, which clashes with the traditional feel of Hoshi.
- Owen (8/5): Very good -
- Richard (10/5): Exceptional - ambiance heating was difficult to control in room
- Lukas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yu-chu (10/5): It was a comfortable stay with 6 star breakfast. The hotel is surrounded by a Japanese garden. It worths taking a Taxi f - Well preserved traditional hot-spring hotel. The breakfast is individually served, 6 star with a server standby. Good service. Beautiful garden around the hotel. N/A
- Rhys (3/5): Worth visiting but I wouldn’t stay again. - Beautiful gardens and very kind staff. I recently stayed at Hōshi Ryokan, and while the staff were incredibly friendly and genuinely tried to be helpful, the room quality was far below expectations, especially given the high cost. The water pressure in the shower was nearly non-existent, and the hot water situation was baffling—the bidet actually had warmer water than the bathroom taps. It felt almost as if this setup was intentional, pushing guests toward either a public bath (which some may find uncomfortable) or an overpriced private bath at 3,650 yen.
To make matters worse, the air conditioning was switched from cooling to heating during our stay, with no way to adjust it back. This left the room uncomfortably warm, and opening the windows only invited in mosquitoes, making it nearly impossible to get a good night’s sleep.
While the hospitality was wonderful, the room experience was disappointing at best and, frankly, felt close to a scam. If you’re considering staying here, I would recommend booking elsewhere and just visiting Hōshi Ryokan during the day, as the gardens and onsen are open to visitors and are worth experiencing without the high cost and inconvenience of an overnight stay.
- Robert (8/5): Very enjoyable and loved the Onsen - Nice location for walks into the country side and beautiful shrine It’s getting a bit old but that’s also part of the charm
- Alexander (7/5): Good - The onsen was amazing such a great experience. The room was huge and it was our first experience in a Japanese style hotel and it was great. The staff were really nice but it was difficult because we only spoke a very small amount of Japanese. if you eat fish, the traditional Japanese dinner was amazing! The hotel is relatively worn and a bit grubby in places. I am vegetarian and unfortunately they could not accommodate me even when we asked months in advance. My partner had the dinner which was great but no options for vegetarians so I only ate rice as there were no restaurants open nearby.
- Patrick (9/5): Fantastic staff, great traditional atmosphere, beautiful garden. - Traditional Japanese Atmosphere
- Stephen (10/5): Excellent cost-value: a very lovely place!!! - Away from normal bustling city life; secluded and yet, located in an area with easily accessible train stations (ie awazu - free shuttle bus service and komatsu). Only 15-20 mins walk to Japan Motorcars Museum. The daily onsen in the afternoon from day-trip was a welcoming time to relax and soothe the tired body. The daily private kaiseki breakfast and dinner took away our worries for food (our first experience to have an in-room maidservant to guide and serve us through the various courses of Kaiseki). Very lovely and top-notched for the price and qualities received. None
- Tania (9/5): Superb - Runa-chan, the Onsen The bar was closed..:(
- Geri (8/5): Overall we enjoyed our stay. - Breakfast was very good and wait staff very friendly. Room was clean and spacious. I asked if my daughter who lives in Komatsu could come visit in my room but not stay over and was told she was not allowed to visit. It was disappointing.
- Alicia (10/5): Exceptional - This was the highlight of our 3.5 week trip! The entire place is beautiful , the staff are fantastic and went out of their way to make us feel welcome and comfortable, and the food was just amazing! Cannot recommend enough ! Nothing. The whole place is amazing !
- Giovanni (8/5): Very good - The onsen and history was great! The size and value was good as well. From the drivers taking our picture at the end and waiting for us at the start. How helpful and kind the staff was, and the nice lady who made us a traditional Japanese breakfast! It was dirty In our room we could see cobwebs on the ceilings and other places. Last the AC was out and my brother and his friend found it difficult to sleep due to that
- Kwan (8/5): Comfortable and tranquil state. - Onsen No food
- Alexandra (8/5): Very good -
- Nirun (9/5): Superb -
- Maik (10/5): Exceptional -
- Khafu (9/5): Impressive - I liked the size of the room and the staff were very professional
I liked the Onsen
I liked the decor There was no way of buying dinner on site, they appeared to have a dining hall and kitchen. They did offer us some off site restaurants. We chose Miyazono which was a 5 min walk and it was very good.
- Edna (7/5): I was extremely happy with our stay - The onsen was wonderful, the dinner exceptional but the room was not tidy enough
We were missing some towels, the bathroom was too small and the floor too cold - I didn’t like that the bathroom sink only has cold water
- Franz (8/5): Exceptional service 😊 -
- Karina (5/5): Passable -
- Benjamin (10/5): Exceptional - Very helpful and friendly staff. Large comfy rooms. Very nice breakfast
- Jack (9/5): Superb -
- Michael (8/5): Very good -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Yuk (8/5): the reputation is more than what it is - Beautiful garden
amazing food (but a bit too much)
beautiful views from the room
lovely staff onsen was not as spectacular as thought
pricey for the relatively old facilities
- Kateryna (10/5): Exceptional - I was amazed by this hotel! It was not just staying at the next hotel. It was the whole experience starting from checking in, with baths, futons, tea and food! I loved it! Our room and public baths were quite clean, but sometimes in the halls you could see where they missed the a spot. I understand that it is a big building, but it was just an impression
- Noema (9/5): Superb -
- Shpetim (8/5): Very good -
- Rudolf (6/5): Pleasant - Staff friendly We could not drink coffee in the dinner/breakfast room...
