Guest Reviews
- Julienne Katrina (10/5): Awesome! - We loved the experience. Everything was really convenient- from the shuttle service from the station and back, then to the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. The food was likewise awesome. The rooms were really spacious. They were also very accommodating to my request to store my breast milk in their freezer. I dont have any bad experience with our stay. Our stay was truly awesome. Kudos to the hotel.
- Quinn (5/5): -
- Cheng Chieh (10/5): 位置極佳,九湯巡禮方便 - 很讚 稍微小貴,但符合他的品質
- Chun-Wei (9/5): For those who wish to experience Shibu Onsen - Fantastic location, especially for people who wish to visit and stamp the public onsens. The private outdoor onsen room was excellent with good amenities, on a clear night you can see many stars. The hotel is an enigma. The premium private onsen room was really high quality. However, basic tatami room much less so, and clearly of much lower value than the price difference indicated. For the dining the dishes were generous but a bit on the salty side. If you book probably would recommend the premium rooms for a better overall value.

- Meagan (10/5): The best hotel we’ve ever stayed not just Japan but globally. - This might be the most incredible hotel we’re ever stayed at. The staff were stunningly attentive, helpful, polite, and hospitable. The facilities—reception, elevator, dining rooms, guest room, private Onsen—were stunning. The location was amazing. The yukata, the slippers, the music. Every detail was stunning. Nothing. We loved every single thing.
- Cathy (10/5): - Amazing, comfortable, welcoming Nothing
- Lucie (10/5): Incredible - We absolutely loved our stay. The ryokan was beautiful, traditional but very modern, clean, food was divine and staff were great.
The food served was an art and super delicious, served in a private dining room.
We were looked after by Matsu throughout our stay and she was incredible - thank you Matsu for making our stay so fantastic!
Our room was spacious, very clean, and nothing was trouble.
We were provided with the yukata robes, geta sandals, baskets and towels and wooden key for our 9 bath experience. The whole town was magical, walking around cobblestone streets hearing the clicking of the getas was just so cool. We
also loved the private bath at the hotel which included hot spring bath, sauna, cold bath, relaxation area and other amenities.
Considering the food and services we think it was also an exceptional value. We would have easily paid the same amount as the room rate just for the dinner in the cities!
Thank you Sakaeya and Matsu! Loved everything
- Matthias (10/5): - Exceptional!
- Maria-Luiza (9/5): - The breakfast, the facilities, the staff, the onsen. There was nothing we did not like.

- John (10/5): Excellent stay! - The dinner, service and room were amazing! highly recommend. Nothing! This hotel was amazing!
- Caitlin (10/5): - The kaiseki meals were gorgeous and delicious. So happy to have that experience. Being able to go to all the onsens was also a really cool experience. The staff was very nice and accommodating.
- Sanjay (10/5): - Hotel was very clean, the room we booked had private onsen and all the facilities were amazing. Included breakfast and dinner was top notch, we really enjoyed the hospitality and presentation. A special shout out to Hinate who was absolutely amazing, very friendly and made us feel very welcome at the private meal ceremonies, so thank you Hinate for showing us everything great about Shinshu. Location was also perfect to go to all 9 onsens, overall we had an absolute blast. Nothing that we didn't like, everything was great! We'd love to go back!
- Hsin-Ying (9/5): Relaxing stay with really nice dinner. - The staff was friendly. Dinner was exceptional. Onsen slightly smaller than imagined and there was not much view.
- Buchan (10/5): -
- Mui Lee (9/5): Great place to unwind! A wonderful onsen experience. - The property has its own onsen. The outdoor onsen is the best, beautiful with bamboo trees. For private onsen an extra charge is applicable. Food was excellent. Service was always bubbly and full of smiles. Great place to relax. Would have liked to have some proper towels in the bedrooms.
- Laura Lee (10/5): Staying at Sakaeya Ryokan was the best experience in Shibu Onsen! - The property is immaculate, organized, and warm. Likewise, the staff were super friendly and accommodating. The rooms were roomy, warm, and comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised by the 8 course kaiseki dinner that were served individually and was too beautiful to devour. The taste was so delicious! You have to try this unique experience! WOW! I love that they shuttle you to/from the station and transport you to Jigokudani Monkey Park because it’s hard to find a taxi service there. Staying here offers you the key to the Shibu Onsens but the one on property is the cleanest! Everything was perfect & I can’t wait to return!!! None, everything was perfect!!!
- Vicky (9/5): Quaint onsen town and unique experience - The room was very big, the onsen was nice and the staff was very attentive and helpful. No private shower in the big room, requires you to be comfortable with using the public onsen shower.
- Jeanette (10/5): Wonderful relaxing stay - Comfortable, well resourced and clean. Excellent service. Fantastic location. Had English Channels and Netflix. Comfortable beds and choice of pillows. Nice and quiet even though right in the middle of Shibu Onsen. Fairly expensive and shuttle to the monkey park not included - but was available. They helpfully allowed luggage to be held after check out to allow for a final monkey park visit though. So a very easy stay if you didn’t mind the extra cost.

- Courtney (10/5): An incredible experience with exceptional staff, delicious food, and beautiful onsen facilities, both public and private - Staff was amazing and super helpful. We dined at the restaurant on site and the food was amazing - we were never able to finish our meals. The access to the onsens (Japanese hot springs) was amazing. They also had private onsens available if you're worried about using the public ones. The overall experience was absolutely beautiful. If you rented a car you could drive to ski hills. We had 9 people and had to take large taxi. Taxi’s are expensive. The hotel arranged every transport for us they were very helpful and super competent.
- Paul157893 (10/5): - Amazing staff, beautiful location, excellent facilities.
- Madeva (10/5): -
- Yong Joo (7/5): -
- sophie (9/5): j ai beaucoup aimé .belle esperience -
- Cath (10/5): Fantastic property. Highly recommended for a traditional ryokan stay - The traditional rooms and the onsen were wonderful. The staff were exceptional and very helpful. They made such an effort with language translation. Check in/out was easy. The property also communicated well via booking.com. The complimentary lounges with tea coffee and other drinks were useful.
Great location for the snow monkeys. Nothing.
Eating options for large groups outside the hotel were limited.
- Gal (9/5): Amazing experience! - Great authentic Japanease experience. Food was great, the onsen is amazing, and the area and tiny little town are very nice to explore. Extra charge for vegetarian meals is a bit unfair (although I was informed in advance), considering most of the vegetarian dishes were simple veggies and tufo. Plus, no wine/beer/sake is included in dinners manu. For this price and level, I would expect it to be part of the deal.
- Sebastian (10/5): Maravillosa - Todo. La atención del personal Nada
- Grimes (10/5): Incredible stay with lovely staff, room, food, and location. - Loved the facility, the very friendly staff who were incredibly accommodating with our stay. They provided shuttle services to and from the station as well as the snow monkey park. We also had an incredible kaiseki dinner and breakfast served with amazing hospitality and care. None
- Jose Maria (10/5): - La onda, la habitacion estilo japones con los tatamis y que dentro del hotel hay un olsen increible Nada
- カイ (10/5): -
- Juanita (6/5): The food was great. The hotel ok. The onsen’s pretty good. - Good food experience. Enjoyed a range of traditional dishes. So overpriced, beyond reasonable expectations. The tourist industry here in old town Shibu Onsen has had a huge impact on the cost of reasonable accommodation in general. Perhaps don’t book earlier and wait for the accomodation to come back down the week before heading here.
- Carlisle (10/5): -
- yuki (9/5): -
- Kira (10/5): Great location in Shibu onsen for public bath hopping. Very comfortable rooms, amazing breakfast and helpful staff. - Great location and very helpful staff.
- Phillip (10/5): -
- Stefanos (10/5): Most memorable stay ever - Everything, food, private onsen, service, location
- Beatrice (10/5): - Excellent dinner and breakfast. Nice Onsen facilities
- Barbara (10/5): -
- Jenny (10/5): Amazing - Amazing. Really loved the outdoor pool. Nothing
- Siobhan (10/5): -
- Chiara (8/5): - the food, the position for the monkeys I’ve seen more traditional ryokan, but the service is kind and the room very clean
- Ivan (9/5): Отличный комфортный рекан - Отличное место
Вкусный ужин
Достаточно свежий и стильный ремонт
Зимой тепло и в номерах, и в коридорах
Общий онсэн хороший
- edward (10/5): - The staff was able to communicate in English. Service and amenities were top-notch. Meals at the accommodation are a must. Can't wait to return to Nagano and stay at Sakaeya.
- Betty (10/5): Beautiful, traditional Japanese hotel with exceptional service. - This place is special. I took my family to see the Shibu Onsen, village based on Spirited Away movie. It is such a quaint, cute and historical little town. This hotel is your traditional Japanese ryokan. It was pretty inside and out. The staff was exceptional! The Onsen was so clean and pretty. I was sad I couldn’t stay longer.
- Yong (10/5): It was an unforgettable memory for our family ! - Everything was perfect , the room, external Onsen, the meals, the staff and the public onsens. It was a great experience for our family. We have to leave . I wish we booked more nights.
- Ryuta (9/5): -
- van Uden (10/5): -
- Daphni (10/5): - The food was amazing and served beautifully Staff were lovely and helpful
- Nicole (10/5): -
- Sheridan (9/5): We loved our stay at Sakaeya. The area had a wonderful atmosphere and the hotel and staff were lovely - The staff at the property were very attentive and helpful. The accommodations and Onsen in the hotel were not excessively hot and were well maintained. I would recommend full board as the hotel food was exceptional and we had some difficulty with getting access to local restaurants due to limited seating and opening times, with some restaurants not accepting children in the area.
- Dep (10/5): -
- Sherman (10/5): - Staff was very attentive and went the extra mile to make our stay enjoyable!
- alexandre (10/5): -
- Mel Horb (10/5): Such a wonderful place! - We loved this place soo much! The Food is superb and unbelievable good, the Staff is lovely and very attentive, the Onsen in our room was one of the best we ever tried , the room was soo pretty...we could go on and on. And this wasn't our first experience in an Ryokan, we stayed in several Ryokans around Japan in some years now, with similiar settings, so I guess we can compare. But, never the less, since we struggle with speaking and understanding Japanese, we are really nervous before each stay in a Ryokan - but here, we felt comfortable the second we got inside, and the Staff speaks perfect english.
We loved our diningroom we had the entire stay for every meal, we loved the amenities, their Misopudding is very delicious, we were able to watch a snowmonkey from the window in our room...ah, we would come back in a heartbeat to this place!
- Candy (10/5): -
- Arthur (10/5): Great hotel, staff, food and onsen. - Nice and clean hotel. Enjoyed the great onsen and food. The staff was outstanding and very friendly. The price was a little on the high side but may have been do to the holidays. Expected more things to do around the hotel but it was located on a quaint street with many onsens.
- Ida (10/5): -
- Juying (10/5): -
- Gabriele (9/5): Super. Cibo ottimo e servizio eccezionale. - Colazione abbondante e davvero gustosa. Servizio shuttle efficiente.
- Theresa (10/5): Overall, it was one of the best onsen hotel that I have stayed in and worth the cost. - The breakfast and dinner were delicious and table setting were very Japanese. The onsen was spacious, clean and well kept with fresh spring water. I visited 4 of the external onsets and it was a good experience as they were very very traditional. I had a family room for 4 of us and the size was comfortable and spacious, with a bathroom and shower attached. Yukatas and towels were in constant supply and easy to request for, which is helpful. Staff at the reception, bell boy and restaurant were super friendly and helpful, and speak English. My family and I felt very welcome during our stay there. I was locked out of the hotel onsen one of the mornings as some tourist with kids locked the door from inside (seems that they wanted the privacy to themselves which obviously is not the right action). I approached the reception and their key didn’t work to open the onsen door. I have to bang really loud and finally a 5 year old boy opened the door. The hotel probably should deactivate any locking from inside and only able to lock from outside. There were coffee and tea available outside the onsen level but no snacks. Would be great if there could be some crackers or nuts as the hotel is in a remote location. Drivers should target to reach the hotel before night fall as the roads are challenging in the dark to drive.
- Roberta (9/5): Amazing stay - Beautiful experience, great location near the monkey park. Ryokan SPA/public bath well kept, very clean and relaxing. Spaciuos room. Food is outstanding. Nice and professional staff. Nothing, all was excellent.
- Otto (10/5): - Traditional and amazing experience
- dr (10/5): Fabuleux - La gentillesse et l'onsen.
Le diner et pdj exquis. Rien
- Hazel (10/5): - Everything about Sakaeya was magical. From the kind staff to the luxury rooms and the kaiseki feast of dreams, I want to go back again. None!
- Anita (10/5): - Warm and welcoming
- Taylor (10/5): 10/10 - Everything was amazing -- staff, room, food, setting
- Henry (10/5): -

- Kim (10/5): Amazing ryokan stay at Shibu onsen - Having the private onsen bath was a highlight of this room. The dinner was exquisite with fresh seafood and could cater for different diets. Breakfast was another feast, had trouble finishing all the food!
This place has access key to the 9 Shibu onsen, so was a lot of fun going around in yukatas and trying them out. And the ryokan has their own public baths for guests as well.
Communication with staff beforehand was quick and helpfu and so attentive during our stay. They helped arrange shuttle to snow monkey park and back to Yudanaka train station for a fee.
4 adults, 2 on twin beds and 2 on futon beds and several drinks provided in mini fridge. Very luxurious ryokan stay and were lucky to get the first snow near the end of Nov! We would stay longer if we could afford it!
- Niccolò (10/5): -
- Caroline (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience - EVERYTHING. This was for us such a unique, attentive, heartwarming experience! The staff attention to detail and to guest well-being is unpaired, I genuinely felt welcome and taken care of. The propriety is beautiful, modern yet with a classic feel, has everything you need and more! Everything was perfect, I can’t honestly fault a single thing.
- Галина (9/5): - Our room with open air bath was very convinient and fantastic for relax! For our understanding snow monkeys tours (even for reasonble price) must be part of a stay. Transfer there and back and a guide. This will increase the interest for your ryokan
- Marie (8/5): Fint, genuint, trevligt.
- Hana (10/5): - The hotel is in a great location, every corner is decorated with great attention to detail, the food is beautifully served and very tasty, the staff is very pleasant and very helpful. There was nothing bad, everything was excellent.
- Marc (10/5): -
- Raheed (10/5): - The staff were so incredibly polite and friendly. The food was incredible and the room was beautiful located in a Ryokan with several onsens in town. Would gladly go back.
- Michele (10/5): Best stay ever! - The staff were so incredibly friendly. It was the most delightful stay of our trip!
- Thibault (10/5): - Luxueux, spacieux, le personnel allie déférence, professionnalisme et efficacité. Merci Sakaeya
- Jonas (9/5): - Great and super friendly service, very good food and overall nice accommodation if you look for a Roykan stay Could offer free shuttles outside the currently limited amount of times given the price you pay per night
- Lisa (10/5): Fabulous onsen hotel in the heart of Shibu Onsen. - Gorgeous property with an excellent location in the heart of the 9 public bathhouses. The hotel onsen were very nice and if you get a room that has the private onsen, well that was just so memorable and fantastic. The dinner and breakfast meals were over the top amazing. Easy access to Snow Monkey park (we walked) and also bus ride up to Shiga Kogen for autumn leaves. Such a great stay!! All was great!
- Natpaka (10/5): -
- Skepasts (10/5): Very well run, top level establishment. - The amenities and service were outstanding. All staff went out of their way to help. We had dinner and breadfast at the hotel. Food was superb. It was not inexpensive but you definately got what you paid for.
- ryo (10/5): -
- Richard (10/5): We would go back in a heartbeat. - The staff looked after us really well and the food was fantastic. The room amenities were exceptionally good and we couldn’t want for anymore.
- Cathy (8/5): A highly desirable ryokan with a traditional Japanese experience for guests. - The meals were fantastic! I was not expecting such a fancy presentation and such delicious flavor. We were treated like royalty. There was a room set up for watercolor paintings. The Onsen and public shower room were lovely.
